Broncos sign 12 players to reserve/future contract

The Broncos signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts on Monday. They will officially join the 90-man offseason roster in March.

Following the conclusion of their 2023 season, the Denver Broncos have signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts.

Perhaps the most notable signing is that of quarterback Ben DiNucci, who spent all of the 2023 season on the practice squad and was elevated to Denver’s game-day roster three times.

With Russell Wilson expected to be released in March, DiNucci and Jarrett Stidham will be left as the Broncos’ two quarterbacks going into 2024. Denver will likely add at least one more QB, either through free agency or the draft (or both) this spring.

Players who were not on an active roster at the end of the season are eligible to sign reserve/future contracts (every player on the practice squad is eligible, for example). These players will officially join the 90-man offseason roster when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 13.

Here’s a look at the 12 players the Broncos have signed to future deals.

Broncos elevate 2 players to active roster before Chargers game

The Broncos elevated RB Tyler Badie and TE Lucas Krull from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

The Denver Broncos made two additions to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Broncos elevated running back Tyler Badie and tight end Lucas Krull from the practice squad to the game-day roster on Saturday. Badie and Krull will revert back to the practice squad on Monday.

Players on the practice squad can be elevated up to three times during the season without having to clear waivers in order to return to the practice squad. This weekend marks the third time that Krull has been elevated, so if the Broncos want him on a game-day roster later this season, the tight end will have to be officially promoted to the 53-man roster.

Krull has served as the team’s No. 3 tight end behind Adam Trautman and Chris Manhertz for two games this season. Greg Dulcich remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Badie, meanwhile, was elevated after fellow running back Samaje Perine (knee) missed Friday’s practice. Perine is listed as questionable on the injury report, but Badie’s elevation might be a sign that Perine will be inactive on Sunday.

Three running backs the Detroit Lions could sign after cut day

Three running backs the Detroit Lions could sign after cut day from Lions Wire’s Russell Brown

One of the more surprising developments from the Detroit Lions roster after cut-day in the NFL is how lopsided their roster is. There’s a plethora of names on the defense but the offense doesn’t have enough players for a second team.

Something to note for Lions fans is that it’s not uncommon for a team to do this. Most of the time, it’s because an organization has their eyes on one or two offensive players that could contribute. For Detroit, that could be the case.

When you look at how their defensive line depth chart takes shape, they could still look to move a player or two and that would open up those roster spots on offense. On the defensive line, they could still be looking to trade either one of the Okwara brothers or they could look to move a player such as Benito Jones. Having seven edge rushers and five defensive tackles is surprising for an offense that could use another playmaker out of the backfield or at wide receiver.

After the Lions announced their 53-man roster, it was surprising to see that they only had two running backs (David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs) and a fullback (Jason Cabinda) listed on the depth chart. Last year, the Lions had four running backs on the roster and that didn’t include Cabinda.

However, two of the running backs on last years roster (Craig Reynolds and Jermar Jefferson) could make it to the practice squad and if they move a defensive player, one of them could make it back to the roster.

That said, could the Lions look to add one of the running backs that were cut this week as teams across the NFL trimmed their roster from 90 players to 53 players?

That’s what I envision the Detroit Lions doing. Now the question is who could they be prepared to add at the running back position? Here’s three running back the Lions could consider adding for their 53-man roster:

Zonovan “Bam” Knight

This will be a player that will be at the top of the list for plenty of teams in the NFL. That’s why it was surprising to see the New York Jets move on from Knight without trading him but maybe their asking price was too high. Either way, the Lions could very well be interested in the talented back who went undrafted out of N.C. State in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Last season as a rookie, Knight ran for 300 yards with a touchdown and he added 13 receptions for 100 yards. At 5’10” and 209 pounds, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds and he had a 3-cone drill time of 6.95 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The Lions are familiar with Knight as they limited him to only 23 yards on 13 carries last season during their week 15 battle. Prior to that game, Knight had averaged 77 rushing yards per game for the Jets. Regardless of his stat line versus the Lions, Knight showed his ability to be an effective pass-catcher while being able to run efficiently in a zone running scheme.

The most impressive stat for Knight is that he forced a broken tackle on 34% of his rushes last year and that was number one in the NFL. During training camp, reports came out of New York that Knight excels running behind a fullback and that he looked “like the best running back in camp.”

For Detroit, this would be a home run addition for what they do offensively and how it feels like they need to add a player to their backfield.

Tyler Badie

Badie is another one-year running back from the 2022 NFL Draft that has some potential. Now that’s simply based on the type of player he was for Missouri. One concern with Badie is that he’s searching for his third team in his second year and he’s only gotten one reception for 24 yards in his career.

The hope for a team like Detroit is that they’ve shown that they can tap into a player and pull some good from them. They’ve found ways to create competition and make the players on the roster better. Maybe they can tap into his 4.45 speed and find ways to get him the football. In his four years at Missouri, he averaged 5.3 yards per carry and he had 126 receptions.

We’ll see if the Lions spin the tires on this one but adding another player to their backfield seems likely. If they miss out on Knight and potentially other running backs, they could turn towards a player such as Badie.

John Kelly

On and off the Cleveland Browns practice squad the last two years, it’s hard to pinpoint what type of player John Kelly can be. One positive when looking at him is that Brad Holmes was with the Rams when Kelly got drafted in the 6th Round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

For Kelly, he’s been a part of some rosters that already have established running backs. With the Rams, he was behind Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown. With the Browns, he was behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Coming to Detroit to back up David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs is probably less than ideal for a player that’s searching for an opportunity.

However, Detroit presents an opportunity for a third running back. Especially if that running back comes in and works hard. While Kelly isn’t a speedster with his 40-yard dash time of 4.62 seconds, he was a physical runner in college at Tennessee. He shook off tacklers on just about every run, and he showed good lateral ability when cutting in the open field.

While signing John Kelly might not be splashy, it could still be a good move for both parties. After all, Kelly is an Oak Park, Michigan native who could look for one last hurrah in his hometown.

18 recently cut players the Colts should consider adding

The Colts will have plenty of options to choose from on the waiver wire.

The Indianapolis Colts officially set the initial 53-man roster before Tuesday’s deadline, but more changes to the group are expected to come.

With over 1,000 players being waived and released in one fell swoop Tuesday afternoon, the Colts will have a strong chance to claim as many players as they want from the waiver wire.

They hold the No. 4 spot in the order and there’s no limit to how many claims they make as long as they can make the corresponding moves to satisfy the 53-player limit.

General manager Chris Ballard is typically a pretty active member of the waiver wire the day following roster cuts.

Here are a few names the Colts should consider adding either through free agency or through the waiver wire:

Broncos roster series: No. 36, RB Tyler Badie

Could second-year running back Tyler Badie make the roster as a utility running back?

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at second-year running back Tyler Badie, No. 36.

Before the Broncos: Badie, (5-8, 197 pounds) was a four-year player at the University of Missouri. In four years, Badie rushed for 2,740 yards on 513 carries in 46 games. Badie rushed for 23 touchdowns while also being a prolific pass-catcher. He caught 126 passes for 1,149 yards and 11 touchdowns. Badie was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft.

Broncos tenure: Badie was on the Ravens’ practice squad before being signed by the Denver Broncos last December. Badie appeared in one game in 2022, making an instant impact. In the 2022 season finale versus the Los Angeles Chargers, Badie’s first NFL touch was a 24-yard touchdown reception. On the catch, Badie eluded several Charger players, tiptoeing the sideline en route to a go-ahead score in the third quarter.

Chance to make the 53-man roster: 50-50. Badie survived the offseason, where the Broncos signed veteran running back Samaje Perine and have a recovering Javonte Williams in the backfield to begin training camp. Head coach Sean Payton has expressed confidence in the running back room and the talent that is there. Badie could become a situational back or a pass-catching outlet for quarterback Russell Wilson as a third-string RB in 2023.

Broncos’ updated RB depth chart after 3 cuts at the position

The Broncos cut three running backs in less than a week. Where does that leave the team’s RB depth chart? Here’s our projection.

Less than a week after they cut running backs Jacques Patrick and Tyreik McAllister, the Denver Broncos also parted ways with Damarea Crockett.

Following those three roster cuts, the Broncos are now left with just five running backs on the 90-man offseason roster: Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine, Tony Jones, Tyler Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin.

So, why was Denver OK with cutting three RBs in less than a week? One potential possibility is that the Broncos continue to feel good about Williams’ recovery from a knee injury he suffered last October.

Denver coach Sean Payton has said that he expects Williams to be ready not only for Week 1 but even for training camp. That seems hard to believe, but actions speak louder than words and Williams has been practicing (on a limited basis) at OTAs and the Broncos have been trimming down their RB room before training camp even begins.

The team’s roster moves seem like a good sign that Williams truly is trending in the right direction.

Broncos Running Back Depth Chart

Broncos’ projected running back depth chart after NFL draft

Samaje Perine might serve as a fill-in starter for the Broncos early in the season if Javonte Williams is not fully recovered by Week 1.

The Denver Broncos did not select a running back in the 2023 NFL draft, leaving the team with an interesting RB depth chart going into OTAs.

Here’s a quick projection of where Denver’s running back depth chart stands at the moment.

Projected starter: Javonte Williams is recovering from a serious knee injury that might make him a candidate to begin the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, which would rule him out for the first four games of the season. Williams is the obvious starter once healthy.

RB2/Fill-in starter: Samaje Perine proved with the Cincinnati Bengals that he’s a quality RB2 who has the ability to serve as a fill-in starter. If Williams does begin the season the PUP list, Perine will start in his place.

RB3: Tony Jones seems to be the early favorite to win the third-string running back job given his familiarity in Sean Payton’s offense. Jones started four games for the Saints in 2021, rushing 54 times for 142 yards that season. Last year, he split time between New Orleans and the Seattle Seahawks.

Competing for RB4: Damarea Crockett, Tyler Badie, Tyreik McAllister, Jaleel McLaughlin and Emanuel Wilson will likely be competing for the final active roster spot and one or two practice squad spots. Crockett has the most experience in this group. Badie made one appearance last season and McAllister has spent time on Denver’s practice squad.

McLaughlin and Wilson are expected to be among the team’s undrafted free agent signings, which are yet to be officially announced.

Unless the Broncos are comfortable with Jones potentially serving as the default RB2 if Williams is sidelined early in the season, the team could be in the market to sign a veteran free agent running back. The list of RBs still available includes Ezekiel Elliott, Leonard Fournette, Kareem Hunt and Phillip Lindsay.

What will the Broncos do at running back this offseason?

“We need to add,” Broncos GM George Paton said of the team’s running back situation.

The Denver Broncos have an interesting situation at running back as they enter the 2023 NFL offseason.

Latavius Murray, Mike Boone and Marlon Mack are all scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on March 15. There’s been talk that Murray could re-sign, but Boone and Mack seem less likely to return.

The Broncos have said they expect Javonte Williams (knee) to be ready by Week 1, but that seems very optimistic (and unrealistic). Chase Edmonds is still under contract as well, but he will likely be asked to restructure.

Tyler Badie will also return, but he’s a long shot to win anything more than the RB4 role. Damarea Crockett and Tyreik McAllister are even less likely to earn notable roles this offseason.

So with Williams’ facing an uncertain status in 2023, the Broncos need to address the running back position this spring.

“We have a long way to go,” general manager George Paton said at the NFL combine last week. “I don’t know how many backs played. I look at our depth chart and we have, like, nine running backs. We obviously had a lot of injuries there. Javonte, we feel, will be healthy, [but] we need to add. We’re high on some of the guys that are up, some of the free agents. We do have Chase Edmonds coming back. We do need to add at that position.”

Paton went on to say that this year’s running back class is deep both in free agency and in the draft, which is obviously good news for Denver. Drafting a RB would be much more cost-effective than signing one, but we wouldn’t rule anything out on the RB front.

The position will be a key area to watch this offseason.

Broncos found talent at last year’s Senior Bowl

Before joining the Broncos, TE Greg Dulcich, CB Damarri Mathis and RB Tyler Badie played in the 2022 Senior Bowl.

The Denver Broncos are back in Mobile, Alabama this week to scout prospects for the 2023 NFL draft at the Senior Bowl.

We’ve put together a list of five players the Broncos should be closely watching during Saturday’s game. It’s not an exaggeration to say Denver will likely end up drafting or signing at least one player from the 2023 Senior Bowl.

Last year, the Broncos watched UCLA tight end Greg Dulcich impress in practice and then catch a pass during the all-star game. Denver later used a third-round pick to select Dulcich in the 2022 NFL draft.

The Broncos were also impressed by Pittsburgh cornerback Damarri Mathis. After playing in the Senior Bowl, Mathis was selected by Denver in the fourth round of last year’s draft.

The Broncos also signed 2022 Senior Bowl alum Tyler Badie last year. Badie was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round last April and later signed with Denver’s active roster in December. He scored a touchdown on his first touch in his NFL debut in the team’s season finale.

Now the Broncos will be looking for the next Dulcich, Mathis and Badie. Here are the full rosters for the 2023 Senior Bowl.
