PFF: Bills finish in bottom half of final offensive line rankings

PFF: #Bills finish in bottom half of final offensive line rankings:

The Buffalo Bills did not see their offensive line have the best of years in 2022. Pro Football Focus reflected that.

Week-by-week during the regular season, PFF ranked each NFL team’s offensive lines, head-to-head. The football analytics outlet placed Buffalo in the bottom half of the league in their final rankings.

According to PFF, the Bills ended up having the 23rd best offensive line in the NFL last season. Not the best finish, and it’s not the best look considering the year prior. Buffalo dropped two spots from their final rating at No. 21 at the end of the 2021 season.

While PFF’s rankings are subjective, they do fit the eye test. Throughout the season, Buffalo’s offensive line never really took off. Consistency in the trenches for the Bills has been an issue throughout the tenues of general manger Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott.

Per PFF’s analytics, Dion Dawkins was the Bills’ top player on the O-line.

Here’s how PFF graded all of Buffalo’s qualifying offensive lineman in 2022 (positional ranking):

  • OT Spencer Brown: 53.4 (76th)
  • OT Dion Dawkins: 73.8 (24th)
  • OT David Quessenberry: 59.3 (69th)
  • OG Rodger Saffold 44.0 (74th)
  • OG Ryan Bates: 61.5 (41st)
  • OG Greg Van Roten: (52nd)
  • C Mitch Morse: 61.0 (24th)

While PFF wasn’t a huge fan, the Bills did have three of their linemen end up in the Pro Bowl: Dawkins, Saffold, and Morse.

3 more Bills players added to 2023 Pro Bowl roster

3 more #Bills players added to 2023 Pro Bowl roster:

With the Kansas City Chiefs advancing to the Super Bowl where they’ll take on the Philadelphia Eagles, their players that made the 2023 Pro Bowl now must be replaced.

In doing that, the NFL announced on Monday that three players from the Buffalo Bills were tabbed to join the Pro Bowl. That brings the team’s total to eight Pro Bowlers this season.

Houston Texans free agency: Player to consider from each NFL divisional playoff team

The Houston Texans should take a look at these upcoming free agents from the 2022 NFL divisional round.

The NFL divisional playoffs are here.

The last time the Houston Texans were in the divisional round was 2019, and that is about all the detail that Clutch City sports fans want with regards to that fact.

As the Texans add to their roster in 2023, they will need to look to free agency, not just to fill holes, but to find players who can make an impact.

Not every team in the divisional round will have an impact player about to hit free agency; some will have hold-the-fort guys. Even so, their addition to the roster is helpful.

Here is an upcoming free agent per team in the divisional round the Texans should consider in March. All salary cap figures are via Spotrac.

14 free agents the Colts should watch during wild-card playoffs

Here are 14 pending free agents the Colts should watch during wild-card weekend.

The Indianapolis Colts will be watching the playoffs unfold from their couch this offseason, and it begins Saturday with the start of the wild-card games.

While the Colts won’t be leading the NFL in salary-cap space like we’ve been used to seeing, they should be a bit more active than they have been in the past.

We shouldn’t expect general manager Chris Ballard to completely change his ways regarding free agency, but it’s reasonable to believe he may be a bit more aggressive when it comes to adding depth, especially to the offensive line.

We’re taking the list of unrestricted free agents, according to Spotrac, for the teams playing in the wild-card games. So there won’t be any Kansas City Chiefs or Philadelphia Eagles players on this list. We’ll save that for next week.

As wild-card weekend gets underway, here are 14 pending free agents the Colts should keep an eye on:

Rodger Saffold makes it clear: He wants to stay with Bills in Buffalo

Rodger Saffold makes it clear: He wants to stay with #Bills in Buffalo:

Rodger Saffold is not being shy: He wants to re-sign with the Buffalo Bills this offseason.

Saffold originally signed a one-year deal with the team this past offseason.

Over the weekend during the Bills’ “mini-bye week” after playing on Thursday, Saffold took some time to jump on his social media account on Twitter.

There, Saffold put his thoughts into the world: He wants to be re-signed by the Bills (9-3) this spring:

Saffold did tag the wrong Brandon Beane in his tweet, but the general manager of the Bills will have certainly heard about the message by now.

Saffold, now 34, could still have at least another year in the tank. Plus, the Bills do seem to like what he brings to the table. He has consistently started at left guard throughout the season.

Also as consistent is Pro Football Focus. The football analytics outlet has named Saffold as the weak link on the Buffalo offensive line throughout their weekly rankings.

Even so, the eye test sees a steady player on an O-line that has been inconsistent at other spots this year. The Bills might be smart to start discussions with Saffold sooner rather than later.

Baldy’s breakdowns: Rodger Saffold makes the O-line better ‘everywhere he goes’

Baldy’s breakdowns: Rodger Saffold makes the O-line better ‘everywhere he goes’

NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger knows a thing or two about offensive linemen in the NFL. It was his job before the one he currently has.

While breaking down the film from the Bills’ 24-10 win against the Patriots in Week 13, there was one man in the trenches that stood out above the rest to him: Rodger Saffold.

“This Rodger Saffold, everywhere he goes, he makes the offensive line better,” Baldinger said.

On one specific occasion, Baldinger touted Saffold’s efforts on a rushing play by Bills running back James Cook.
