Buffalo Bills at Los Angeles Chargers: Team connections

Player who’ve played for both the #Bills and #Chargers:

The Buffalo Bills will visit the Los Angeles Chargers for a matchup on Saturday evening in Week 16.

It’s a brand new NFL weekend with plenty on the line for both teams. But for some on the Bills (8-6) and Chargers (5-9) there is a bit more at stake than others.

That’s because multiple players or coaches for both sides are going to be playing against their former teams. That can create a little bit of extra motivation for them heading into Saturday… as expected.

With that, here’s a quick list of connections the two teams have with one another ahead of the upcoming matchup at So-Fi Stadium:

Chargers’ Raheem Layne out for season with torn ACL

The Chargers lost a key special teamer for the remainder of the season.

Chargers safety Raheem Layne suffered a torn ACL in the loss to the Cowboys on Monday night, head coach Brandon Staley confirmed.

“Raheem is one of our top special teams players,” Staley said. “This is a tough moment for him, but he’ll be back. He’s proven himself in two years that he can play in the league.”

Layne went down with the injury in the third quarter on a punt play and never returned to the game.

Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana last year, Layne appeared in 11 games with one start, which came in Week 4 against the Raiders. He posted seven tackles.

While he did not play much defense, Layne was a core special teamer.

Chargers’ positions of need ahead of trade deadline

Here are the positions the Chargers could look to upgrade before the deadline.

October 31 is inching closer, which means the NFL trade deadline is near.

Following their bye, the Chargers will embark on a 13-game stretch, meaning they will need all the reinforcements they can get to bolster position groups that are a little thin or in case someone goes down.

With that said, let’s look at a few positions that Los Angeles could look to upgrade within the next couple of weeks.

Chargers make roster moves ahead of Week 3 vs. Vikings

Chargers OL Zack Bailey was signed to the active roster.

The Chargers made some roster moves ahead of their matchup with the Vikings.

Los Angeles signed offensive lineman Zack Bailey to the active roster. In correspondence, they waived undrafted rookie AJ Finley.

Additionally, L.A. promoted safety Dean Marlowe from the practice squad to the active roster.

Bailey, a preseason standout, appeared in one game for the Chargers last season. He played just four snaps. Bailey has the versatility to play tackle and guard.

Marlowe played in Week 2 against the Titans, posting 21 snaps on special teams.

Chargers sign two more players to the practice squad

The Chargers added a veteran safety and tight end.

The Chargers signed safety Dean Marlowe and tight end Nick Vannett to the practice squad on Thursday.

After the additions of wide receiver Alex Erickson, Marlowe and Vannett, there are two vacant spots on the practice squad.

Marlowe spent the second half of the 2022 season with the Bills after being traded by the Falcons. He became a full-time starter after Damar Hamlin’s horrifying injury.

Before that, Marlowe had three stints with the Bills from 2018-2020. He also played a season for the Lions in 2021.

Marlowe started his NFL career with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent out of James Madison University in 2015, where he played under Brandon Staley, the defensive coordinator and secondary coach.

Across seven seasons, Marlowe has 119 tackles, seven passes defended, two interceptions and a pair of tackles for loss.

Vannett, 30, spent last season with the Saints and Giants, playing nine games with three starts. He totaled six catches for 55 yards.

He also has played for the Seahawks, Steelers and Broncos.

A third-round pick by Seattle in 2016, Vannett has 90 receptions for 874 yards and six touchdowns in his career.

Bills re-sign Dean Marlowe, add UFDA Joel Wilson

Dean Marlowe is back and the #Bills add another UDFA:

The Buffalo Bills have brought their offseason roster to the maximum number of 90 players on the first day of 2023 OTAs.

The team announced on Monday that veteran safety Dean Marlowe was re-signed by the team, but the Bills added another undrafted rookie free agent as well: tight end Joel Wilson.

Marlowe, 30, has spent part of four years of his career in Buffalo. Originally joining the team in 2018, Marlowe departed in 2021 to find an opportunity for more playing time.

Last season Marlowe returned to Buffalo to backup the Bills’ starting tandem of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer once again as the team traded for him. Marlowe was with the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons during his time away from the team.

Marlowe made four total appearances in 2022.

Wilson is a 6-foot-4 tight end that played at Central Michigan. When Buffalo originally announced their UDFA additions after the 2023 NFL draft, Wilson was not among them. Post-draft, the Bills have now signed eight undrafted players.

Wilson originally did sign with another team after the draft in the New Orleans Saints. At the time, he did not pass his physical and was let go according to Saints Wire.

With the team using a first-round pick on Dalton Kincaid at the draft, Wilson will have an uphill battle to a final roster spot. However, there’s a chance he could earn a practice squad place.

In 34 games at Central Michigan, Wilson had 82 catches for 874 yards and 12 touchdowns.

3 Bills free agents we are surprised haven’t re-signed yet

3 #Bills free agents we are surprised haven’t re-signed yet (but keep their names in mind, post-draft):

A large amount of the players that were on the 2022 Buffalo Bills roster that became free agents after last season have already figured out their future.

Some notable players, such as linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, have departed. Others, like safety Jordan Poyer, re-signed in Buffalo.

But there are still some that remain available and a few we’re surprised to see still there. Here are three such Bills free agents:

Bills’ Dean Marlowe make surprise admission about pick vs. Dolphins

#Bills’ Dean Marlowe make surprise admission about pick vs. #Dolphins (via @bradleygelber):

While the Bills didn’t play their best game on Sunday, they did enough to escape the Wild Card round with a 34-31 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

The fact the team is moving on in the playoffs, is thanks in large part to a strong performance from the Buffalo defense.

Despite facing a third-string rookie quarterback in Skylar Thompson, the Bills still had to contend with the likes of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle at wide receiver… a nightmare for any secondary.

The Bills found a way to keep them both out of the end zone.

“Ya, that was huge,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott said during his postgame press conference. “I think they had one, maybe two [explosive plays]? So just overall good job by the secondary to keep them in check the best we could. You know they’re really good, really fast.”

One of the highlights of the game on defense came from a rather unlikely source: Veteran safety Dean Marlowe.

With injuries to the Bills secondary including Micah Hyde and notably Damar Hamlin, Buffalo has been forced to reach further down the bench.

Marlowe, who played for the Bills for several seasons before signing with the Detroit Lions last year, was brought back to the team earlier this season at the trade deadline.

The Bills gave up a seventh-round draft pick for the safety who was with the Atlanta Falcons at the time.

With a seven-point lead in the first quarter, Marlowe made a play on the ball. He came up with an interception which lead to a Bills touchdown on the ensuing drive:

But evidently luck was on Marlowe’s side.

“Schematically, I wasn’t in the right position, to be honest,” Marlowe told the media after the game. “I knew I messed up, but I can only try to make the best out of the situation and think my instincts kinda kicked in to get back where I needed to be. You know, I quickly seen him throw the ball and I just put my hands up and grabbed it.”

Marlowe was asked what sort of reception he got from coaches and teammates after making his way back to the sideline.

“Man, they just say, ‘you see ball, you get ball,'” Marlow said laughing. “I’m living right, gotta be living right. Just for me to be schematically not in the right position but for me to kinda have a panic mode and get back and make a play, you know hey, if you’re not in the right position you better make a play. You better make it and I made it.”

While we are use to seeing Bills quarterback Josh Allen and his offensive teammates grab the headlines, Marlowe said that isn’t the case inside the Bills’ locker room.

“It starts during the week, man,” Marlowe continued. “We make sure we play as one heartbeat and when things go wrong… we say in the defensive room that our team is lead by our defense. Any team that has a strong defense, gives themselves a chance to win a ballgame. So, we just told each other we’ve got to get as many takeaways as possible and you know we did a good job.”

The Bills will need that continued stellar play from this defense if they hope to advance further on throughout the playoffs. Next up, Buffalo hosts the Cincinnati Bengals.
