Georgia sack leader Robert Beal returns to UGA

UGA OLB Robert Beal, the team leader in sacks, is BACK…

Georgia outside linebacker Robert Beal Jr. has elected to forgo the NFL draft and return to Athens for his super senior season.

The 2021 leader in sacks (6.5) was an integral part of Georgia’s national title run after taking over for star EDGE Adam Anderson after his arrest.

The Duluth, Ga., native is a former five-star recruit out of Peachtree Ridge High School who has played behind some NFL pros in his time in Athens.

In 2022, Beal will be joined on the other side of the defense by Nolan Smith, who also elected to return to Athens. The pair helps solidify a defense that will be losing multiple starters to this year’s NFL draft.

Robert Beal, Linebacker (No. 33):

Class: Junior

Height: 6-4

Weight: 244 pounds

Hometown: Norcross, Georgia

High School: Peachtree Ridge High School

Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Robert Beal removed his name from the NCAA transfer portal earlier this offseason. Beal came to Georgia as a talented four-star recruit. He has the potential to provide pressure off the edge.

Beal played in only four games last season. Beal played much more as a freshman in 2019, when he played in 11 of 14 games and recording a sack.

Beal will compete with Adam Anderson, Nolan Smith, Jermaine Johnson, Rian Davis, Trezmen Marshall, and more for playing time at outside linebacker. Perhaps the easiest area for Georgia’s elite defense to improve is in pass rush. UGA finished 60th in the country with 31.0 sacks last season.

Projected 2020 Georgia football depth chart: Linebackers

We project what Georgia’s line-backing core will look like in 2020 after a record breaking year for the Bulldogs defense in 2019.

The 2019 Georgia defense might have been the best in program history. The Bulldogs finished the season ranked No. 1 in scoring defense, No. 3 in total defense and only allowed two rushing touchdowns all year.

The Georgia defense in 2020 will look a little different, mainly because of the departures of safety J.R. Reed and linebacker Tae Crowder to the NFL. However, Georgia returns a majority of starters from the record-setting unit in 2019, led by coach Kirby Smart and one of the most experienced linebackers in the SEC, Monty Rice.

Here is our projection of what the linebacker depth chart will look like in the Fall:

Report: Georgia LB, a former 4-star, enters NCAA transfer portal

Per a report, Georgia football LB, a former 4-star, has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Georgia added its third athlete and first scholarship player in the NCAA’s student-athlete transfer portal.

According to Matt Zenitz of AL.com, sophomore outside linebacker Robert Beal added his name to the portal.

Beal can be recruited by other programs and take official visits to other campuses. According to NCAA rules, he can return to Georgia. Conversely, the Dawgs can revoke his scholarship at this time.

Beal’s playing time in 2019 was greatly reduced by the stellar play of junior redshirt freshman Azeez Ojulari, junior Walter Grant, sophomore Adam Anderson, and true freshman Nolan Smith. After playing in 11 of 14 games as redshirt freshman, Beal only played in four games this past season.

Coming out of Peachtree Ridge High (Suwanee, Ga), Beal was ranked as the No. 11 overall prospect in Georgia, the nation’s  No. 107 overall prospect and the No. 8 weak-side defensive end in the 2017 class.

On Wednesday, Georgia saw two reserve players enter the portal as well in WR Josh Moran and RB Prather Hudson, who are both set to graduate on Friday.

Georgia Bulldogs outside linebacker Robert Beal is entering the transfer portal. Beal played in five games and recorded eight tackles on the season. Beal hails from Norcross, Georgia. His transfer status was updated today:

Beal is a talented player and his loss is a big-hit for Georgia’s defensive depth in the future. Beal’s transfer shouldn’t come as a surprise. He played much more during his freshman season, when he recorded 15 tackles and a sack. Beal’s decreased playing time is likely connected to his off-season arrest.
