An updated look at Wisconsin football’s highest NIL player valuations

Wisconsin football returns to the field for spring practice in late March.

It is then that we’ll get a first glimpse at some of the Badgers’ newcomers, including former Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, former Oklahoma running back Tawee Walker and former Arkansas linebacker Jaheim Thomas.

The spring period promises to be an active one after Wisconsin’s disappointing 7-6 campaign. Improvements are needed on both sides of the football as the program prepares to face one of the conference’s toughest schedules.

Wisconsin star cornerback to return for 2024 season

Wisconsin star cornerback to return for 2024 season

Wisconsin star cornerback Ricardo Hallman announced on ‘X’ earlier today that he will be returning to Madison for the 2024 football season.

The redshirt sophomore started all 13 games for the Badgers in 2023, recording 34 tackles, three tackles for loss, seven interceptions, one touchdown and five passes deflected.

BallySports’ Dave Heller noted that Hallman’s eight career interceptions is one away from being tied for ninth on Wisconsin’s all-time list, two away from being tied for seventh and six away from passing Scott Nelson for fifth all-time.

The standout from Florida was eligible for the NFL Draft, and obviously had the option with everyone else across the sport to enter the transfer portal. His return is big news for a Wisconsin defense that had an up-and-down 2023 campaign.

Hallman is set to lead a cornerback room that added former Toledo Ronald Delancy III in the transfer portal earlier this offseason.

Badgers safety returning for another season

Leading tackler staying in Madison for 2024

The Badgers football team is gearing up for the ReliaQuest Bowl against LSU on January 1 in Tampa, Florida, and safety Hunter Wohler announced Thursday that the bowl game will not be his final contest with Wisconsin.

The safety will be back in Madison for his senior season in 2024 to address some “unfinished business” with the Badgers. Wohler became a superstar for Wisconsin this year, recording 113 tackles (73 solo), including a sack, while also intercepting two passses and deflecting four others over the team’s 12 regular season contests.

His return in 2024 provides the Badgers with one of the more formidable pairs in the secondary, as cornerback Ricardo Hallman (six interceptions in 2023) will also be back.

Two Wisconsin Badgers make PFF’s 2023 All-Big Ten Defense

Two Wisconsin Badgers make PFF’s 2023 All-Big Ten Defense

For another trip around the sun, Wisconsin’s strength was on the defensive side of the football.

The Badgers finished the season ranked No. 28 overall in ESPN’s SP+ metric, more specifically with the No. 91 offense and No. 6 defense.

So, given the program had one player make PFF’s 2023 All-Big Ten Offense: right tackle Riley Mahlman, there had to be more to make the defensive group.

That was exactly the case. Both cornerback Ricardo Hallman and safety Hunter Wohler earned PFF 2023 All-Big Ten Defense honors.

The two players formed a secondary alongside Iowa cornerback Sebastian Castro, Minnesota safety Tyler Nubin and Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman.

Wohler led the Badgers in tackles in 2023 with 113. He also recorded 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions and four passes defended. Hallman, meanwhile, finished the year with six interceptions, 30 tackles, three tackles for loss and five passes defended.

Badgers cornerback named as an AP All-American

Rico rewarded for impressive third year in Madison

The Badgers football team wrapped up their regular season 7-5 and they’re set to take on LSU in the Reliaquest Bowl on Jan. 1, but first, cornerback Ricardo Hallman was named as an AP All-American on Monday.

Hallman earned Third-Team All-American honors by the Associated Press after he finished the year with 24 tackles and six interceptions, one of which he returned for a 95-yard touchdown, while also deflecting five passes over the team’s 12 games this season.

The cornerback’s selection to the All-American team marked the third consecutive year where a Badgers defensive player was chosen, joining Nick Herbig (third team in 2022) and Leo Chenal (second team 2021).

WATCH: Wisconsin radio analyst has his takeaways from Ohio State game

Tausch’s takeaways from Ohio State loss

The Badgers football team (5-3) lost to Ohio State (8-0) 24-10 in Week 9 at Camp Randall, battling hard against one of the best teams in the nation. Broadcast analyst Mark Tauscher, a former Badger, gave his takeaways from the game.

He highlighted Wisconsin’s ability to fight and scrap and make it a competitive game. He names cornerback Ricardo Hallman, safety Preston Zachman and linebacker Maema Njongmeta as notable defensive players, all of which were on the receiving end of a Buckeyes turnover.

Offensively, Tausch was impressed by quarterback Braedyn Locke’s ability to fire up the fans with a second-half touchdown. There are a lot of great things in the future, which starts Saturday at 11AM on the road at Indiana.

Know your foe, Wisconsin: Which Badgers could give Ohio State problems

Which Badgers are you concerned about? #GoBucks

When everyone looked at this season’s schedule, many believed this weekend’s contest between [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] and Wisconsin would have been a top-25 matchup.

That isn’t the case. The Badgers have been tripped up twice already, but it still is a very intriguing game. Former Buckeye [autotag]Luke Fickell[/autotag] inherited a Wisconsin program that didn’t quite fit his style of play, and it has shown during his first season.

Their air raid offense just does not have the personnel to run it at the moment, but that doesn’t mean Wisconsin isn’t a dangerous team. Find out below which Badgers could give Ohio State some problems on Saturday evening.

WATCH: Ricardo Hallman mic’d up on this week’s ‘(Wi)red’

The Badger cornerback was mic’d up in practice

Wisconsin continued their weekly mic’d up practice segment “(Wi)red with a timely selection to wear the microphone. The Badgers handed the mic to cornerback Ricardo Hallman, who made the play of the game last Saturday with a 95-yard pick-six interception return against Rutgers.

The interception gave Wisconsin a 17-0 lead heading into the break just as the Scarlet Knights had a chance to inch closer.

Hallman did not let us down on the microphone as this week’s fan choice for the segment. From his musical taste to live reactions to drills in practice here is a look at the Florida native’s mic’d up segment:

A Wisconsin Badger was PFF’s highest-graded cornerback from Week 6

A Wisconsin Badger was PFF’s highest-graded CB in CFB Week 6:

Wisconsin’s 24-13 Week 6 win over Rutgers came with one defining moment.

Rutgers trailed 10-0 nearing halftime and had driven the ball down to Wisconsin’s 6 yard-line. Quarterback Gavin Wimsatt dropped back and airmailed a pass out to the right flat. Wisconsin cornerback Ricardo Hallman was all over the route, intercepted the ball and took the return 95 yards for a pick-six.

The play extended Wisconsin’s lead to 17-0 entering halftime and created an insurmountable deficit for a struggling Rutgers offense.

“We watched a bunch of film on [Rutgers] and knew when they got to the red zone…they like a lot of crossing routes,” Hallman said to 97.3 The Game’s Mike Heller after the game. “So we were manned up and I saw my guy go inside, and the other guy go out. And I was like ‘oh, I can make this play.’ So I saw the chance and jumped right in front of it. And ultimately I was able to take it, I don’t know how far the runback was…I was glad to stop their momentum and give us some points before half.”

Hallman’s pick-six is one of the Badgers’ best moments of the season thus far. That play, plus the rest of his afternoon, was enough to earn Hallman a PFF grade of 89.3 — the highest of any cornerback across Week 6 of college football.

Wisconsin is back in action this Saturday with a pivotal contest against the 5-1 Iowa Hawkeyes.

Badgers start season 2-0 in Big Ten

While the Scarlet Knights were inside the 10 yard-line, Badgers cornerback Ricardo Hallman stepped in front of a pass from Gavin Wimsatt with less than 20 seconds left, returning it all the back for a 95-yard touchdown.

After taking a 17-0 lead into halftime, Wisconsin was able to play conservatively in the second half and take home a 24-13 victory and improve to 2-0 in Big Ten play.
