CHECK IT OUT: Best pics from Badgers 24-13 win over Rutgers

Badgers start season 2-0 in Big Ten

The Badgers football team hosted Rutgers at Camp Randall for a conference matchup on Saturday in Madison, defeating the Scarlet Knights 24-13. Wisconsin got out to a 10-0 lead and Rutgers was threatening to score prior to the largest defensive play of the year for the Badgers.

While the Scarlet Knights were inside the 10 yard-line, Badgers cornerback Ricardo Hallman stepped in front of a pass from Gavin Wimsatt with less than 20 seconds left, returning it all the back for a 95-yard touchdown.

After taking a 17-0 lead into halftime, Wisconsin was able to play conservatively in the second half and take home a 24-13 victory and improve to 2-0 in Big Ten play.

Here are some of the best pictures from the game:

Badgers fans react to spectacular pick-six

Hallman takes one back for a TD

After what was a relatively quiet first half for the Badgers, the Camp Randall crowd was sent into a frenzy when cornerback Ricardo Hallman picked off Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt with 20 seconds to go in the first half, returning the ball 95 yards for a touchdown. The score gave Wisconsin a 17-0 lead going into halftime.

It was Hallman’s third interception in the last game and a half after he picked off Purdue quarterback Hudson Card twice in Wisconsin’s 38-17 win two weeks ago. He’s now up to four interceptions this season.

Can the Badgers improve to 5-0 all-time versus Rutgers?

The Badgers football team (3-1) will take on Rutgers (4-1) at home on Saturday at 11AM. The two programs have faced each other four times throughout their football history, all of which have come since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014.

Wisconsin is 4-0 all-time versus the Scarlet Knights, outscoring their opponent a rather impressive 168-30 over those contests.

The last time the Badgers faced Rutgers was in 2021, a game which they won 52-3 on the road.

Badgers wide receiver in top 30 in the nation in YPC

Dike in nation’s top 30 WRs

The Badgers were off this weekend after beating Purdue 38-17 to improve to 3-1 last weekend, but wide receiver Chimere Dike entered Week 5 in the top 30 in the nation in yards per catch.

Through Wisconsin’s first four games, Dike has reeled in 11 catches for 228 yards, which is 20.73 yards per catch. That number puts him at the 29th highest average reception in the country.

Dike hasn’t quite had his first breakout game of the 2023 campaign yet with his season-high four catches and 75 receiving yards coming in Week 2 versus Washington State while his only touchdown was Week 1 versus Buffalo.

He’ll look to tally his first 100-yard contest next Saturday (Oct. 7) versus Rutgers at Camp Randall at 11AM on Peacock.

Wisconsin vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

The Badgers bounced back nicely after the strange home loss to Rutgers a few weeks ago.

They didn’t do anything well defensively in the first meeting – it was the lone defeat in the last six games – but bounced back to hold down Indiana, Michigan, and Minnesota and are now tied with Purdue for the Big Ten lead.

The three point shooting isn’t good, but the points are there on the inside. This is still the best team in America when it comes to giving the ball away – it doesn’t do it – and on the other side, Rutgers turned back into …

Rutgers.

The team went on a brilliant four game roll, but the defense didn’t do a thing in loss to Purdue, and it couldn’t rebound anything in the loss to a Michigan team that got beaten up by Wisconsin the game before.

But …

Why Rutgers Will Win

Rutgers is back home.

The fight continues to be there and the defense hasn’t been totally miserable, but this is still the worst team in the Big Ten at making the three there isn’t steady scoring punch, and the defensive rebounds aren’t enough of a factor.

However, like all teams, it’s different and stronger in its familiar surroundings, and it shows. The shooting is night-and-day better, there are more threes, and the team is 13-2 in Jersey’s Mikes and 3-9 when it’s not.

And …

What’s Going To Happen

How did Rutgers do it the first time around?

It made 51% of its shots, was even better from three, and Wisconsin was dead-cold from three. It was the best job done by the Scarlet Knight D from three since the win over Michigan on January 4th, and that’s not happening again.

The Badgers don’t need the three to win, but they’ll get a few more than they did the first time and continue to be great on the inside.

Rutgers will still get this done at home with a great performance by the defense in the finals two minutes, and Wisconsin will miss too many free throws.

Wisconsin vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Break up the Scarlet Knights.

All of a sudden, they’re making a nice push with two straight strong wins over Michigan State and Ohio State thanks to red hot shooting from the field and clutch play helped by a ton of assists.

Wisconsin is Wisconsin. It’s not going to throw 85 points on the board and unlike Rutgers, it’s not going to come up with a ton of assists and it’s been struggling to consistently shoot well.

Yeah, it went pillar to post in the win at Michigan State, but it’s struggling to get the threes going, it’s not taking the ball away, and it’s going to have a tough time inside against a Rutgers defense that’s coming up with a whole lot of blocks.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Those big wins by Rutgers were at home – it’s a different team in Piscataway.

Wisconsin isn’t a rock in Madison – it lost in mid-November to Providence and didn’t hold up a few weeks ago against Michigan State – but it should keep up the momentum after the great performance in East Lansing.

No, it’s not shooting well from three, but it’s doing a fantastic job at defending from the outside.

No, it’s not rebounding well enough, but it’s been able to control games in the run of four wins in the last five games.

Yeah, Rutgers has been able to hit better than 50% from the field in the last two games, but only two teams – Michigan State and Illinois – have been able to do that against Wisconsin. Rutgers just isn’t strong enough from three to shoot its way out of a jam, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Wisconsin find any consistency?

It beat Penn State, but couldn’t score. It was great against Michigan State in one of its best performances of the season, but it couldn’t do anything to slow down Illinois last week.

Rutgers can puff its chest out with the way it’s playing, but the Badgers will shoot well, it’ll be fine from three – the RU D is giving up a ton from the outside – and it’ll overcome a sloppy first half with a sharp second half.

Wisconsin vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Rutgers has no downfield passing game.

The offense isn’t great, but it isn’t completely miserable. For what the team does – rely on defense, force mistakes, run the clock – getting to 350 yards isn’t all that bad … against most defenses.

You beat the Wisconsin D by hanging around, and then hitting the open deep shots that are always available 2-to-4 times a game against this bunch. Rutgers is averaging under ten yards per completion – among the fewest in the country – and hasn’t hit 160 yards passing in either of the last two games.

The Badger defense has been a brick wall – allowing fewer than 270 yards of total offense to everyone but Penn State and Michigan – and dominating against the run.

Georgia has the best defense in college football, but Wisconsin leads the nation against the run.

The Rutgers offense isn’t going to move, so …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Rutgers Will Win

Rutgers has to hang around … hang around … hang around …

And hope the takeaways will be there to pull this off.

Ohio State and Michigan State were able to run well against the Scarlet Knights, but that’s been about it – they should be able to hold up well early. If Wisconsin gets to over 24 points, forget it. If it’s held to around 17 and has to press, the mistakes will come.

The Badger offense has been able to finally stop giving the ball away in bunches – it was ultra-careful with the ball against an Iowa team that lives on taking it away – but it has turned it over two or more times five times in eight games.

Rutgers has the ability to take the ball away in bunches …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Sort of.

Rutgers has ten takeaways on the season, but they all came in three games. The offense isn’t going to make big mistakes, but it’s also not going to convert on the big chances it will have to take.

Wisconsin should be able to deliver the knockout punch right away with two good scoring drives, but the struggles in the red zone are for real.

The Badger O only scores touchdowns 50% of the time when getting inside the 20. When it gets two or more, it wins – 5-0 – when it gets fewer, it’s 0-3.

Rutgers has a terrific red zone defense, but …
