WATCH: Ricardo Hallman’s 95-yard pick six seals win for Wisconsin

Ricardo Hallman’s pick six defines Wisconsin’s win over Rutgers

Wisconsin defeated Rutgers 24-13 yesterday to improve to 4-1 and 2-0 in Big Ten play.

If you don’t have a Peacock subscription and weren’t able to watch the game, the Badgers dominated for much of the contest yet generally struggled to finish drives.

The Badgers led 10-0 nearing halftime facing a Rutgers 2nd-and-goal from the Wisconsin six-yard line. Their lead should’ve been much larger, though a Braelon Allen red zone fumble was keeping the Scarlet Knights in the game.

That, until Gavin Wimsatt telegraphed a pass to the flat which Wisconsin cornerback Ricardo Hallman intercepted and took to the house.

Here’s the game-changing play, with a terrific alternate angle from field level:

Wisconsin turns to a season-defining contest at home against former Badger QB Deacon Hill and the 5-1 Iowa Hawkeyes.

Badgers fans react to spectacular pick-six

Hallman takes one back for a TD

After what was a relatively quiet first half for the Badgers, the Camp Randall crowd was sent into a frenzy when cornerback Ricardo Hallman picked off Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt with 20 seconds to go in the first half, returning the ball 95 yards for a touchdown. The score gave Wisconsin a 17-0 lead going into halftime.

It was Hallman’s third interception in the last game and a half after he picked off Purdue quarterback Hudson Card twice in Wisconsin’s 38-17 win two weeks ago. He’s now up to four interceptions this season.

Badger Countdown: Cornerback returns as number two in 2023

Is Ricardo Hallman set for big season?

The 2023 college football season is here and the Badgers are now two days from their opener against Buffalo on Sept. 2 at Camp Randall. Cornerback Ricardo Hallman is back in number 2 this season and is stepping into a larger role on Wisconsin’s defense.

Hallman appeared in 10 games last season recording nine tackles, an interception and three pass deflections. With Jay Shaw and Cedrick Dort Jr. moving on after 2022, Hallman will be more widely used in his third campaign in Madison.

New defensive coordinator Mike Tressel has brought his 3-3-5 defense over from Cincinnati and it’s a scheme that excels in providing disguised looks to the opponent’s offense, which could lead to a productive year for Hallman and the secondary.

The Big Ten has some intriguing potential breakout stars #GoBucks #B1G

The Big Ten conference is full of potential breakout stars and no doubt a few will make themselves household names this season. We wanted to highlight the top five players that should become stars by the end of the season.

However, the challenge is that if you are reading this, you are likely already well-versed in regard to the talent throughout the Big Ten so some of these names will be obvious. Stay with us though, because nationally folks may not be aware.

We wanted to provide a few names that didn’t see a ton of action last season or players that showed flashes of All-American ability. This should be a solid mix of that as well as both offensive and defensive players, so let’s jump into the top breakout candidates in the Big Ten for 2023.

The Badger football team came together to participate in Braelon Allen’s second-annual charity softball game this past week, posting a behind the scenes video.

Players like wide receiver Chimere Dike, running back Chez Mellusi and cornerback Ricardo Hallman were amongst those who participated alongside Allen. The contest took place in Allen’s hometown of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin and the funds raised supported the Boys and Girls Club, amongst other things.

The team is entering their first full campaign with Luke Fickell at head coach and the buzz from the fans hasn’t been this high in a really long time, maybe ever. Wisconsin opens their 2023 season at Camp Randall versus Buffalo on Sept. 2.

Badgers PFF grades: Top 5 defensive players from week 3 win over New Mexico State

Here’s a look at the top 5 highest graded defensive players from Wisconsin’s 66-7 victory over New Mexico State, according to Pro Football Focus:

Head coach Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin Badgers (2-1) took care of business at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday afternoon, beating the visiting New Mexico State Aggies 66-7 in a game that was never close.

The Badgers’ defense, led by Jim Leonhard, only allowed seven points (which came in garbage time), 242 yards of offense, and wound up forcing three turnovers.

The defense dismantled the Aggies two quarterback system from the jump, ending eight of New Mexico States’ 15 possessions in three and outs.

The Badgers, currently unranked, finished conference play on a high note and will now prepare for a grueling Big Ten slate that begins with a road test against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Twitter reacts to Wisconsin CB Ricardo Hallman’s one-handed interception

Some of the best Twitter reactions to Wisconsin CB Ricardo Hallman’s one-handed interception:

After a successful early drive on offense against the New Mexico State Aggies, the Wisconsin Badgers made a phenomenal stop on defense with an outstanding one-handed interception from redshirt freshman cornerback Ricardo Hallman.

Hallman made the play along the sideline by running the route ahead of Aggies WR Kordell Davis while creating separation to make the fantastic one-handed grab. The Badgers are asserting their dominance early over 0-3 New Mexico State, as the Badgers have been able to score on the ground and shut down the Aggies’ offense.

It is great to see the Badgers rebounding on both sides of the ball after an upset loss to the Washington State Cougars last week.

Badgers rebuilt secondary no longer a position group of weakness

Badgers rebuilt CB room has a chance to be really, really good this fall:

Entering the college football offseason, the Badgers top ranked defense was set to lose starting cornerbacks Faion Hicks and Caesar Williams, both of whom had been multi-year starters for UW. Couple that with starting nickel corner Dean Engram switching to the offensive side of the ball, and the nation’s top ranked defense has some serious holes to fill in their secondary.

Thankfully, Paul Chryst and company saw this glaring need on the roster, and took to the transfer portal to fix it. Wisconsin brought in Justin Clark (Toledo), Jay Shaw (UCLA), and Cedrick Dort Jr. (Kentucky), all of whom have considerable experience at the collegiate level to help rebuild an otherwise inexperienced secondary.

Not to mention, there have been several instances of in-house options taking the next step in their development and working their way up the depth chart. Senior CB Alexander Smith has the most experience of any returning player, and appears set to sit to begin fall camp as the team’s CB1 after a strong showing in the spring. Red-shirt freshman Ricardo Hallman also appears ready to push for meaningful snaps on the outside despite the influx of experience added to the roster.

These additions through the transfer portal helped patch up a gaping hole on the roster that allows Wisconsin to maintain their level of excellence on the field now, while allowing younger players like Al Ashford, Auman Williams, Max Lofy, and Avyonne Jones to continue developing until they’re ready for larger roles of their own in the future.

At their core, Wisconsin will continue to be a recruit and develop program. However, the transfer portal also allows for teams like UW to pursue stopgap options that prevent their younger players from being thrust into roles they’re not ready for. It’s a win-win for UW, and an overall masterful use of the transfer portal.

What was once viewed as a position group of weakness, is now viewed as a strength for the Badgers as they move past spring ball and into summer workouts.

Entering fall camp, Wisconsin’s projected starters at CB are expected to be Alexander Smith and Jay Shaw on the outside, with Toledo transfer Justin Clark starting at the nickel corner.

Twitter reaction from four-star safety Braelon Allen’s commitment

Four-star 2022 safety Braelon Allen became the first member of the Badgers’ class of 2022 last night as he announced that he was “staying home” and committing to play for the Wisconsin Badgers.

The Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin native is the No. 166-ranked recruit in his class, No. 6 at his position and the No. 4 recruit from the state of Wisconsin.

Here’s what Badger players, coaches and recruits had to say on Twitter after Allen announced his commitment.

First, the introduction of the new class of 2022 hashtag by many of the program’s top recruiters.

Next, recruits and underclassmen expressed their excitement to play with the future Badger.

Finally, a tweet that warrants speculation as four-star class of 2022 defensive end Isaac Hamm–the No. 12 recruit at his position and the No. 3 recruit from the state of Wisconsin–chimed in on the news.

Earlier today Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin Badgers added the first cornerback to their class of 2021 in three-star recruit Ricardo Hallman.

The addition of Hallman now gives the Badgers 15 commits in their 2021 class, one which still has sights on landing Nolan Rucci, Terrance Ferguson, Skyler Bell and others.

Before today’s news the class was ranked No. 13 in the nation and No. 3 in the Big Ten.

After Hallman announced his commitment? The class jumped two spots to No. 11 in the nation and stayed No. 3 in the conference.

The Badgers have not had a top-20 class since the beginning of the internet recruiting ranking era, let alone top-10.

If Chryst and company are able to land Rucci, Ferguson and Bell? This class could push well inside the top 10 and cement itself as the best class in program history.
