Fred Van Vleet did Sam Cassell’s NSFW celebration in front of him and it was so fun

WOW I can’t believe he did that.

It’s early in the NBA season. Very early. But still, the Raptors have found themselves at 7-6 and are in the East’s playoff picture after so many people counted them out in the offseason.

A big part of that is Fred VanVleet. Dude is playing like an absolute All-Star this season. He’s been making big plays for the Raptors all year. He did it again on Thursday night against the 76ers,

He dropped 32 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds to go along with one big 3-pointer he hit in the fourth quarter to essentially seal the game for the Raptors and give them the win.

And to throw a little cherry on top, he pulled out Sam Cassell’s infamous NSFW celebration after hitting his big shot.

The best part? He did it in front of Sam Cassell, who is an assistant coach for the 76ers.

MAN. That’s so fun. This is how you pay your respects to the big homies. Absolutely love to see it. Deep down, Cassell probably did, too.

This was awesome.

Out-of-rotation players who could become trade candidates

We are more than three weeks into the NBA regular season and most teams have settled on their rotations. Some aren’t fully healthy and will have tinkering to do when key players return, but some others have some rotation players that are not playing.

Here are some players consistently getting DNP-CDs despite being healthy who could become candidates for a trade.

The Blazers’ Gary Trent Jr. trade created some wild and eerie coincidences with his father

Like father, like son.

Gary Trent Jr. was traded from the Trail Blazers to the Raptors on NBA Trade Deadline day for Norman Powell.

Normally, that wouldn’t mean very much. It’d be considered your normal, run-of-the-mill NBA trade deadline trade. But this one created one of the weirdest fun facts that you’ll ever see.

Gary Trent Jr. played for the Trail Blazers just like his dad, Gary Trent, did. He will also play for the Raptors just like his dad did, too.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Oh, wow. He’s really following in his father’s footsteps. That’s pretty wild, but it’s not that weird. We’ve definitely seen weirder.

And you would be right…if that’s where the fun fact ended. Apparently, just like his father, Trent was traded to the Raptors in this third season. And, to make it even more specific, he was traded after 41 games…just like his dad.

It’s sort of eerie!

You can check their basketball reference pages. It’s true. They were both traded 41 games into their third season from the same team to the same team.

Talk about like father like son. Sheesh.

The winners (Magic) and losers (Raptors) of the 2021 NBA trade deadline

Let’s break it all down.

We didn’t get the biggest of blockbusters on Thursday as the NBA trade deadline hit at 3 p.m. ET — Kyle Lowry is still a Toronto Raptor.

But we got plenty of deals to go over and talk about. And that’s where this list comes in: a look at the winners and losers of the 2021 trade deadline.

Our Charles Curtis and Mike Sykes break it all down, from the trade that didn’t happen to the good deals that did to the fanbase that must be SO pumped after unexpectedly making the biggest move of the day.

Let’s jump into it and discuss:

Watch: Owl sends hawk tumbling with mid-flight ‘super kick’

A filmmaker has captured rare footage showing a short-eared owl attacking a northern harrier from behind and clobbering the hawk with a perfectly executed front kick.

A filmmaker has captured rare footage showing a short-eared owl ambushing a northern harrier and clobbering the hawk with a perfectly executed front kick.

Freddy Moyano was afield late Tuesday in East Wisconsin when the owl pursued the harrier and delivered what Moyano described as a “super-kick,” sending the harrier briefly tumbling.

The video, artistically edited to include sound effects and color enhancement, illustrates the intense territorial rivalry between raptors in rural woodlands, especially during nesting season when competition for food is heightened.

Moyano, a voiceover artist who publishes weekly videos featuring Wisconsin wildlife, told For The Win Outdoors that most confrontations do not involve physical contact and that he was not sure he had captured such a “rare moment” until he reviewed his footage.

“I was 100-plus feet out,” he explained. “I saw a couple of clashes in the air but I couldn’t tell on the spot until I came home two hours later and I reviewed it. And man, that was like, what the heck? The foot of that owl is there [on the harrier] and the whole deal.”

His footage shows the clash several times, the harrier being chased, and the owl later resting atop a perch.

“I’ve been following these owls for months and there’s quite a rivalry,” Moyano said. “They compete for rodents. You see a lot of owls grabbing them in their talons and flying with them.

“And then I’ve seen harriers trying to snatch the rodents in the air from the owls, and that’s more common. It’s just rivalry over the food. But the impact like that… that’s hugely uncommon.”

Moyano was so impressed that he created an artistic rendering of the clash (posted above), which he says “sums up the video.”

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, short-eared owls prey mostly on small mammals such as mice and voles, but will attack larger mammals and even fairly large birds, such as gulls, terns, and rails.

The medium-sized owls are extremely agile and they’re active day and night during the breeding season.

Northern harriers, distinctive hawks with broad wings and long tails, typically fly low over open areas and will often hover for extended periods when they sense prey opportunities.

According to the Cornell Lab, northern harriers rely heavily on hearing to  help them locate prey. Prey items are similar to those of owls, although in some areas harriers prey almost exclusively on voles.

The NBA’s new ‘Earned’ jerseys, ranked from best to worst

Some of these are pretty good.

The NBA’s “Earned” jerseys are back again. They make these every year for the 16 teams that make the playoffs and they’re always released in the second half of the season.

They came back again on Wednesday. The NBA just released their latest “Earned” jersey offerings and they aren’t too bad. Some of them definitely miss the mark, of course, but you’ll always have your misses.

But there are also some definite hits within this new group of jerseys. There are also probably more than a few teams in this crop that should think about making their earned jerseys their regular ones because they’re that good.

Here’s a quick look.

You know what’s next. It’s time to rank them from best to worst.

‘Wait for it!’ Watch as osprey pulls giant fish from inlet

A Florida wildlife photographer on Monday captured footage of an osprey diving talons-first into Florida’s Sebastian Inlet and flying off with a fish nearly its size.

A Florida wildlife photographer on Monday captured footage of an osprey diving talons-first into Florida’s Sebastian Inlet and flying off with a fish nearly its size.

Mark Smith told For The Win Outdoors that the osprey nabbed its meal, an Atlantic menhaden, at Sebastian Inlet State Park, and carried the fish 300 yards to a nearby perch.

While the footage is dramatic, and the fish a heavy lift, Smith said this is not a rare sight at this time of year.

“The birds were in a feeding frenzy and I have dozens of clips like this,” Smith said.

In fact, the photographer added, he has seen ospreys catch much larger fish, and early last month he captured footage of an osprey flying off with three fish in its talons, ultimately dropping one.

“Oh what’s that? There is a two fish limit? Well let me leave one right here for later,” Smith tweeted.

Ospreys, which prey almost exclusively on fish, will often spend hours consuming their meals, usually from high perches such as branches, cliff faces, and even the tops of power poles and light posts.

Report: Golden State Warriors showing interest in signing veteran center Marc Gasol

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Golden State Warriors are one of the teams showing interest in former Raptors center Marc Gasol.

After reportedly signing former Boston Celtics guard Brad Wanamaker to a one-year contract, the Golden State Warriors have shifted their plans to the frontcourt market in free agency.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Warriors are showing interest in veteran big man Marc Gasol. However, the Warriors will have competition to bring the former Defensive Player of the Year. The Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors have also shown interest in signing Gasol.

Via @wojespn on Twitter:

Gasol spent the last season and a half playing with the Raptors, averaging 8.1 points on 44.2% shooting from the field with 6.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest. During his 70 game stint in Toronto, the three-time All-Star shot 40.0% from beyond the arc on 2.9 attempts per game.

During Toronto’s run in the Orlando Bubble, Gasol tallied seven points on 46.5% shooting with 5.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists in eight games. The 6-foot-11 center struggled in Toronto’s postseason campaign. Over 11 playoff tilts at Disney World, Gasol registered six points on 39.1% shooting from the field.

Against the Golden State Warriors in the 2019 NBA Finals, Gasol started all six games, registering 12 points on 44.7% shooting from the field with 7.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.

With an impressive resume that includes an NBA championship and a spot on the All-NBA First Team, the 35-year-old could be a competent mentor to help oversee the development of Golden State’s recent No. 2 overall draft pick. At only 19-years-old, James Wiseman could learn from a veteran like Gasol.

Along with being able to knock down an open 3-pointer and the ability to defend the rim, Gasol could provide a level of veteran stability to Golden State’s frontcourt with Wiseman, Marquese Chriss and Kevon Looney.
