Officials didn’t help, but Sixers played into their own demise in Game 2

The officials didn’t help the situation, but the Philadelphia 76ers played into their own demise in the Game 2 loss to the New York Knicks.

NEW YORK — The Philadelphia 76ers had it. They had Game 2 against the New York Knicks in their grasp.

Tyrese Maxey hit a 3 with 1:09 left to put Philadelphia up four. The Sixers then produced a stop, and Kyle Lowry made a free-throw to put Philadelphia up five with 47.3 seconds to go.

Then, chaos.

Jalen Brunson made a side-step triple that hit the front of the rim and bounced into the air before dropping to pull New York within two, 101-99.

The Sixers then had trouble getting the ball in. Nick Nurse claimed he called timeout and the officials didn’t grant him one. It also appeared Maxey was fouled by Brunson on the inbounds pass. He didn’t get a call.

Maxey lost the ball in the corner. New York’s Josh Hart picked it up and found Donte DiVincenzo wide-open on the wing. He missed the 3-point attempt, but Isaiah Hartenstein grabbed the offensive rebound and the ball found DiVincenzo for a 3 to give the Knicks a 102-101 lead with 13.0 seconds left on their way to a 104-101 win.

Two separate things can be true:

  • The officials messed up and didn’t help the situation. Philadelphia has every right to file that grievance with the league.
  • If the Sixers had just grabbed a rebound off the DiVincenzo miss, they would have won the game and rendered everything else pointless.

Afterward, Joel Embiid ripped the officials and guaranteed the Sixers would win this series against the Knicks. The sentiment is great. Philadelphia should want its leader to speak like this. However, the Sixers played into their own demise.

A big factor was once again rebounding. Philadelphia did a great job of rebounding overall compared to Game 1, but it came down to Hartenstein crashing and grabbing the critical rebound. That led to the DiVincenzo go-ahead 3. If the Sixers grab that rebound, then they win the game.

The Sixers are not out of this series. At all. They’re down 2-0, but they have two huge games at home that they have to win. Philadelphia has been right there in both games 1 and 2.

The excuses and blaming the officiating have to stop. The Sixers had their chance in Game 2. Even with the chaotic possession, DiVincenzo missed that initial triple. The Sixers needed to grab that rebound and that would have won the game.

Pistons fall to Celtics, tie the Sixers for consecutive NBA loss record

The Detroit Pistons fall to the Boston Celtics to tie the Philadelphia 76ers for the longest losing skid in NBA history at 28.

The Philadelphia 76ers are no longer alone.

During The Process era, the Sixers dropped 28 consecutive games starting at the end of the 2014-15 season and into the beginning of the 2015-16 season. Philadelphia dropped its final 10 games of the 2014-15 season and then started the 2015-16 season on an 18-game losing skid.

It stood as the longest losing streak in U.S. professional sports history.

Now, the Detroit Pistons have joined them.

The Pistons dropped their 28th consecutive game on Thursday: a 128-122 overtime road loss to the Boston Celtics. Detroit led by as many as 21 before the Celtics stormed back to force overtime and win.

Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 31 points and Jaden Ivey had 22 for the Pistons.

The Pistons take on the Toronto Raptors at home on Saturday. That will be their next opportunity to end the streak. If they fall again, the Sixers will no longer have a record that nobody wants.

Pistons fall to Nets, tie Sixers for longest losing streak in history

The Detroit Pistons fall to the Brooklyn Nets and tie the 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers for the longest losing streak in NBA history.

The 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers have more company.

The Detroit Pistons fell to the host Brooklyn Nets, 125-103, on Saturday night. Their 26th loss in a row ties the Sixers and 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers for the longest losing streak in a single season.

The 2013-14 Sixers, who were at the beginning of The Process years, lost 26 in a row from Jan. 31, 2014 through March 27, 2014.

The difference between these Pistons and those Sixers and Cavs teams: Detroit is trying to win. The effort has been there, but the Pistons have not been able to overcome the obstacles in their way.

The Sixers hold the record for most losses in a row overall: 28, a streak that spanned the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.

The Pistons next two games are against the Nets at home on Tuesday and the Boston Celtics on the road on Dec. 28.

Sixers release first look at new 2023-24 City Edition jerseys

The Philadelphia 76ers have released the first images of their new City Edition jerseys

Every year, NBA teams release an updated version of their City Edition jersey. For the 2023-24 season, the Philadelphia 76ers will have a new jersey design that pays homage to Reading Terminal Market, Philadelphia’s famous indoor farmers’ market. The Sixers will likely wear their City Edition jersey once or twice during the season.

Generally, these releases are limited editions. With the design changing yearly, fans have to quickly acquire their memorabilia before they’re removed from shelves and become collectibles that are only available on the resale market. The Sixers’ new design follows a recent theme of “The City of Brotherly Love.”

The Sixers will enter the new season with numerous questions hanging over their heads. However, there is continuity within the roster and an exceptionally gifted head coach, Nick Nurse. With potential pitfalls ahead, the Sixers will need to embody the brotherly love that is on their jersey.

You can get your first look at the new City Edition uniform in the embedded tweet above.

Celtics eliminate Hawks in Game 6, sets up semifinals matchup with Sixers

The Boston Celtics have eliminated the Atlanta Hawks to set up a semifinals matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers finally know their Round 2 opponent. After sweeping the Brooklyn Nets on April 22, they had been waiting around in limbo to get an opponent for the Eastern Conference semifinals.

After squandering an opportunity at home in Game 5, the Boston Celtics responded and eliminated the Atlanta Hawks 128-120 on Thursday in Game 6. Boston received big games from the Jays as Jaylen Brown had 32 points and five rebounds while Jayson Tatum added 30 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists.

The Celtics will now advance to face the Sixers in Round 2 with Game 1 of this series set for Monday at the TD Garden in Boston. The Sixers will have their hands full with this talented Celtics team, but the time off should be very beneficial for them.

Of course, the status of Joel Embiid will be a big talking point over the next couple of days heading into this series. Coach Doc Rivers revealed on Thursday that the big fella was visiting with the doctors so an update on him should be released soon.
