Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 41

Today’s installment focuses on the 10 players who wore No. 41 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 10 players who wore No. 41 over the years as of Sep. 2023.

On this day: Heinsohn hired as coach; Embry traded for; Douglas born

On this day, the Boston Celtics hired former player Tommy Heinsohn as coach, traded for Wayne Embry, and Sherman Douglas was born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise hired their former star forward Tommy Heinsohn as head coach. A product of Holy Cross, Heinsohn had been drafted by the Celtics as a player in 1956, the Union City, New Jersey native would play nine seasons for the team, winning titles in eight of them among many other honors.

Heinsohn retired from playing in 1965 to do play-by-play announcing (he would again after coaching) and would be hired as coach four seasons later. He would lead the Celtics to an NBA-best 68-14 record in the 1972-73 season, garnering Coach of the Year honors.

He would win titles as a coach with Boston in 1974 and 1976 and was fired from the job after a disappointing 1977-78 season.

Atlanta’s Bogdan Βοgdanovic on former Celtics Kemba Walker, Juancho Hernangomez joining EuroLeague teams

The Atlanta Hawks wing spoke at length about the trend in a recent interview with Eurohoops.

With former Boston Celtics Kemba Walker, Juancho Hernangomez, Tacko Fall and Mfiondu Kabengele electing to take their talents overseas in recent weeks, the opportunities for former Boston players who can’t find the right spot in the NBA anymore have increasingly come into focus.

And it is not just Celtics fans taking note of the phenomena. Atlanta Hawks wing Bogdan Βοgdanovic spoke at length about the trend in a recent interview with Eurohoops. The Hawks star spoke about Walker joining Monaco and Bo Cruz’s move to Greece’s Panathinaikos, which he frames as a testament to the competitiveness of the EuroLeague in recent years.

New HoopsHype analysis grades NBA Celtics alumni play in the 2022 EuroBasket

The Boston Celtics had a number of alumni currently signed to other NBA teams participating in the 2022 European Basketball Championship.

The Boston Celtics had a number of alumni currently signed to other NBA teams participating in the 2022 European Basketball Championship (better known as the EuroBasket). They even had one of them, Toronto Raptors forward Juancho Hernagomez, play an instrumental role in helping the Spanish National Team win gold against the French National Team and three other Celtics alumni (Guerschon Yabusele, Evan Fournier, and Vincent Poirier).

Albert De Roa of HoopsHype recently put together an article grading the play of NBAers participating this year in the quadrennial competition, and a few former Boston players found themselves held in high regard.

Let’s take a look at his assessments of the ex-Celtics NBA players who took part in the EuroBasket.

Boston Celtics alum Juancho Hernangomez’ EuroBasket gold highlights

The end result of the man who played Spanish wunderkind Bo Cruz in the Netflix “Hustle” film was a real-life movie finish to the Spanish National Team’s run to get the gold in this year’s EuroBasket.

Former Boston Celtics forward Juancho Hernangomez had a solid if not extraordinary series of games in the European Basketball Championship until the EuroBasket final against France. Hernangomez, in what was easily his best outing of the quadrennial summer event, helped Spain win gold on Sunday.

The ex-Boston big man put up 27 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals with just 2 turnovers and 1 personal foul. He finished a white-hot 9-of-11 shooting from the floor — 7-of-9 from beyond the arc — in just over 26 minutes of playing time.

The end result for the man who played Spanish wunderkind Bo Cruz in the Netflix film “Hustle” was a real-life movie finish to the Spain’s run to the gold in this year’s EuroBasket.

Basketball Twitter reacts to Spain winning gold in the EuroBasket: “Bo Cruz’s sequel just wrapped filming”

Here’s how basketball Twitter reacted to Spain winning EuroBasket 2022.

Spain managed to win the gold medal in yet another EuroBasket tournament after defeating France in the Final.

Willy Hernangomez was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while fellow Spanish guard Lorenzo Brown was named in the All-Star Five.

Here’s how basketball Twitter reacted to Spain winning gold.

Despite a massive game from Dennis Schroder, Spain ousts Germany 96-91 from the EuroBasket

The Celtics alum’s EuroBasket swan song was quite impressive — but ultimately not enough.

It would be one of his best games of the 2022 European Basketball Championship for his German National Team, but Dennis Schroder’s big game would not prove to be enough to get Germany past the Spanish National Team in EuroBasket knockout play on Friday, Schroder’s squad falling 96-91.

The former Boston Celtics floor general put up 30 points, a rebound, 8 assists, and 2 steals in the loss while shooting 11-of-17 overall and 3-of-7 from 3. His fellow Celtics alum Daniel Theis added another 10 points, 3 boards, and an assist in Germany’s attempt to make the gold medal game.

That honor will fall to Spain, who will now face France for the 2022 EuroBasket title thanks in part to another Boston alum.

That would be Spanish big man Juancho Hernangomez, who chipped in 13 points, 3 rebounds, and a block off of the bench for his Spanish National Team.

Spain outlasts Finland, Lauri Markkanen with 15 points, 4 boards from Juancho Hernangomez

The Celtics alum added key offense off of the bench to keep Spain’s EuroBasket hopes alive.

Former Boston Celtics big man Juancho Hernangomez picked a great moment to have one of his better games of the European Basketball Championship. His help off the bench for Spain kept Finland at bay in a 100-90 victory during the EuroBasket quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Hernangomez put up 15 points, 4 rebounds, an assist and a steal in just over 26 minutes of playing time for Spain, which won despite 28 points and 11 boards from Finnish and Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen. Hernangomez had a solid game everywhere but from beyond the arc (hitting just 2-of-7 from 3), connecting on 5-of-11 attempts overall and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. He committed three personal fouls but no turnovers.

Spain will face Germany in Friday’s semifinals.
