Watch: Pierre Desir with the Pick-Six for the New York Jets

Pierre Desir picked off Brett Rypien of the Broncos and took it back 35 yards for a Jets touchdown.

Pierre Desir was made to look bad by Jerry Jeudy of the Denver Broncos in the first half on a 48-yard TD play. The Jets’ DB bounced back with two interceptions of Brett Rypien, the second a Pick-Six.

Check it out as No. 35 in black returns the pass of the former Boise State star 35 yards for a touchdown that brought the Jets within 27-25 in the fourth quarter.

Of course, the two-point conversion failed.

Instant Analysis: Sam Darnold’s blunders prove costly in Jets’ loss to Colts

Jets Wire breaks down New York’s Week 3 loss to the Colts.

Football is all about capitalizing on opportunities. No matter how talented your team is or how hard they play, missed opportunities usually result in a loss.

The Jets learned that lesson firsthand against the Colts in Week 3, as a pair of Sam Darnold interceptions proved costly in a 36-7 loss to Indianapolis. New York lost its first drive to a pick-six and Darnold cost the Jets points again later in the first half with an interception in the end zone. The second half featured much of the same, as Darnold tossed another pick-six, effectively burying any chance of a comeback.

Give the Jets credit. They played tough and hung around a lot longer than they did against the 49ers last weekend. For this team, being competitive beyond the first 13 seconds of a game can be considered progress. Maybe they can parlay that into a complete game against the Broncos on Thursday Night Football in Week 4.

Game Balls

WR Braxton Berrios: Berrios hauled in four passes for 64 yards and a first-quarter touchdown reception. The Miami product has done a fine job for New York since entering the starting lineup in Week 2.

Quick Thoughts

-Another week of struggles for Gregg Williams’ defense, which was supposed to be the strength of the Jets in 2020. Instead, they have been exploited both on the ground and through the air.

-The Jets need Mekhi Becton to be okay. He has been one of the lone bright spots on New York’s offense so far this season and has the makings of a future star at left tackle. Gang Green cannot afford to have him miss any time.

-Obviously, it did not give the Jets any momentum, but a great job by Sam Darnold to bounce back and march the Jets down the field for six after throwing a pick-six to begin the game. It’s unfortunate that he could not overcome the turnover bug and take advantage of that strong second drive.

-Darnold’s at his best when he uses his legs to extend plays and stretch out the defense. It’s not ideal when he is forced out of the pocket before he has time to go through his initial reads, but at least he has a skill set that allows him to make something out of nothing when he has to.

-Do the Jets have something in Berrios? That could be the case. He has displayed a knack for getting open the last couple of weeks.

-Henry Anderson’s string of underwhelming play finally caught up to him, as he was benched to start the game. Frankly, it’s about time. The Stanford product has simply not produced.

-Week 3 marked the first time the Jets did not trail after the first quarter in 2020. You could call that baby steps for New York.

-The Pierre Desir experiment has been an utter disaster so far. From getting benched in his Jets debut to constantly getting beat and flagged in key moments, he has gotten off to a rough start in the Big Apple.

Sam Darnold, Jamison Crowder among Jets’ Studs & Duds in brutal loss to Bills

Jets Wire takes a look at the New York Jets studs and duds from the team’s 27-17 season-opening loss at the hands of the Bills.

For Adam Gase and the New York Jets, Sunday’s season opener was a failure on every level.

The Jets came out flat and underprepared and were weighed down by an unimaginative and underperforming offense. Meanwhile, the defense looked soft and anemic. The same issues that plagued the Jets last season were on full display in the team’s 27-17 loss at the hands of the Bills. Even with the Jets losing two starters to injuries — Le’Veon Bell and Blake Cashman — the worst takeaway from Sunday’s performance was how baldy Sam Darold played. The clock is ticking for both Gase and Darnold and neither did themselves any favors Sunday.

With that said, let’s take a look at Gang Green’s studs and duds from its season-opening loss.

Dud: HC Adam Gase

Adam Gase had an opportunity to turn over a new leaf in his team’s season opener.

Instead, the Jets were embarrassed, out-coached, outplayed and outsmarted in every possible way. Watching the Bills put up 27 points with Buffalo’s offensive coordinator Brian Daboll utilizing his available talent to the best of their abilities made the loss even more frustrating for Jets fans.

The Jets have a healthy Sam Darnold, a revamped offensive line, a motivated Le’Veon Bell and an underutilized weapon in Chris Herndon, and yet the offense looked reminiscent to the one Luke Falk ran in 2019.

That falls on the lap of Gase, who is running out of time and excuses. His team didn’t look ready to play football Sunday and it doesn’t get any easier from here on out.

4 Jets who could see more snaps on defense in 2020

Which Jets defenders are poised for more playing time in 2020?

Gregg Williams proved in 2019 that he can make something out of nothing. He turned around a defense devoid of top-tier talent and turned the Jets into a top-seven unit.

Joe Douglas didn’t make too many changes on defense and instead re-signed some of the Jets’ best players from last season to team-friendly deals. He traded Jamal Adams, though, and lost C.J. Mosley after the linebacker opted out of the season, but for the most part, the defense will be very similar. This means a lot of players from last year’s squad will need to step up in 2020 to earn their keep on the team – from the defensive line to the linebackers to the secondary.

With that in mind, here are four candidates for a snap increase in 2020.

(Chris Pedota-NorthJersey.com)

DE Quinnen Williams

Williams is poised for a breakout season after a disappointing rookie year in which he played in less than 50 percent of the Jets’ defensive snaps. He missed some time with an ankle injury, but still only finished with 28 combined tackles, 2.5 sacks and six quarterback hits after the Jets took him No. 3 overall in the 2019 draft. Williams took his poor season to heart, though, changed his diet and slimmed down to 297 pounds – six pounds lighter than last year.

There is a lot of room for improvement with Williams, but he proved he can play at a high level at times in 2019. He played in over 60 percent of the Jets’ snaps in eight of the 13 games he played in last year and that number should certainly increase as he continues to learn Gregg Williams’ defense.

Jets Injury Report: Jeff Smith hurts shoulder, Greg Van Roten limited on Saturday

Jets Injury report from practice on Aug. 29.

The Jets got even thinner at wide receiver on Saturday, as Jeff Smith left practice with a shoulder injury.

Smith injured his shoulder diving for a pass in 7-on-7 drills and promptly left the field with a trainer. He is set to undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. If Smith is forced out of action for an extended period of time, he will be the latest Jets wideout forced to the sideline. Both Breshad Perriman (knee) and Denzel Mims (hamstring) missed practice and it remains to be seen when they will return.

Prior to his injury, Smith had been taking reps with New York’s first-team offense and was having a solid training camp. Undrafted free agent George Campbell stepped into his spot on Saturday and impressed with a touchdown reception from David Fales and a contested first down catch going up against Quincy Wilson.

Pierre Desir (hamstring), Tarell Basham (ankle) and Jabari Zuniga (quad) also missed practice. Rookie Bryce Hall, who was recently activated from the COVID-19 reserve list, did not practice and was placed on the active/non-football injury list as he works his way back from a gruesome ankle injury suffered in his senior year at Virginia.

Greg Van Roten practiced, but was limited due to an oblique injury suffered in practice on Wednesday. Brian Poole was also limited as he returns from dehydration, working exclusively on special teams. James Burgess returned after missing time because of a back injury.

Jets DB coach jokingly calls cornerback room ‘a bunch of outcasts’

New York Jets DBs coach Dennard Wilson has jokingly referred to his cornerbacks as ‘outcasts,” but it’s a rallying cry for an underdog unit.

There aren’t a lot of well-known names in the Jets cornerback room, but that’s what the unit prides itself on. In fact, New York’s defensive backs coach, Dennard Wilson, jokingly refers to his group as “a bunch of outcasts,” he said earlier this week.

Even if Wilson is technically joking or using that as a motivational tool, his message rings true. Rather than going down the path of paying a premium for a No. 1 cornerback, which has significantly hindered New York in the past, Joe Douglas elected to put together a group of rotational cornerbacks who provide depth for Gang Green.

New York’s cornerback room starts with Pierre Desir, who is already on his fifth team and was a cap casualty after flaming out in Indianapolis. Quincy Wilson, who had become an afterthought with the Colts, was just thrilled to be given an opportunity to prove himself. Like Desir and Wilson, Nate Hairston is another cornerback who fell down Indianapolis’ depth chart. He found himself shipped away for a Day 3 pick last year.

As for Brian Poole, his free agent market never took off, even after he was one of the best nickel corners in the NFL in 2019. Players like Bless Austin and Bryce Hall dealt with lower-body injuries during their senior seasons of collegiate play and subsequently were Day 3 picks.

Then there’s Arthur Maulet. He bounced around between Indianapolis and New Orleans before going back and forth between New York’s active roster and practice squad.

These aren’t names that jump off the page, but they’re certainly ones that embody the culture that Wilson has tried to bring into the cornerback room. These are players that other teams have given up, but the Jets are hoping a group with a collective chip on its shoulder can improve what was a weak position in 2019. Last year, a makeshift unit had to make up for the failures of Trumaine Johnson and Darryl Roberts.

Even without a lockdown No. 1 cornerback, New York is entering another season in Gregg Williams’ system, one that adapts to the strengths of its players. While Douglas may have constructed a positional group of relative no-names, they’re each coming in with something to prove.

Jets injury report: Breshad Perriman sits out practice with knee injury

Breshad Perriman was held out of Sunday’s practice due to a knee injury.

Add Breshad Perriman to the list of injured Jets wide receivers.

Perriman sat out of Sunday’s practice due to a knee injury. His knee swelled up a bit on Saturday, but the injury is not considered serious and the expectation is that he’ll be back on Monday.

RT Chuma Edoga didn’t finish practice, as he suffered a calf injury. Edoga is in a battle at right tackle with George Fant. Meanwhile, LB Patrick Onwuasor had tests done on his knee that revealed no torn ligaments. He’ll be out for an extended period of time.

WR Denzel Mims (hamstring), CB Brian Poole (dehydration), CB Pierre Desir (hamstring) LB James Burgess (back), Corbin Kaufusi (hamstring), RB Josh Adams (hamstring), S Mathias Farley (hamstring), OL Connor McDermott (knee), DL John Franklin Myers (groin) and DE Jabari Zuniga (quad) were all held out of practice once again. Poole had an extreme reaction to dehydration due to an undisclosed condition.

LB Avery Williamson said he felt good in his return to practice after being out for about a year with a torn ACL.

Jets injury report: Patrick Onwuasor among 3 new injuries

Patrick Onwuasor, Josh Adams and John Franklin Myers all suffered new injuries for the Jets.

The New York Jets announced three new injuries on Saturday.

Patrick Onwuasor (knee), Josh Adams (hamstring) and John Franklin Myers (groin) were all forced to leave practice early. Onwuasor hurt himself chasing down TE Ross Travis. He was able to walk off the field under his own power.

Denzel Mims (hamstring), Pierre Desir (hamstring), Brian Poole (dehydration), James Burgess (back) and Jabari Zuniga (quad) were all held out of practice again. The Jets are hoping Mims can start individual drills in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Jets are not rushing Poole back, as he is still dealing with dehydration issues. He had a similar problem last summer as well.

Avery Williamson (knee), Ryan Griffin (ankle) and Daniel Brown (NFI list) were all activated and participated in individual drills for the first time this training camp.

Jets injury report: Connor McDermott week-to-week with knee injury

Connor McDermott is week-to-week with a knee injury.

The Jets lucked out with an injury to one of their backup offensive lineman.

Connor McDermott had an MRI on his knee on Wednesday and is listed as week-to-week. McDermott left Tuesday’s practice after hurting his knee, but the injury is not as serious as initially feared.

As for Thursday’s practice, Mathias Farley (hamstring) and Jordan Willis (knee) both left practice early. It is unknown how severe both injuries are to Farley and Willis.

Denzel Mims (hamstring), Pierre Desir (hamstring), Brian Poole (dehydration), James Burgess Jr. (back) and Jabari Zuniga (quad) all didn’t practice on Thursday as well.

Jets WR Vyncint Smith out 5-8 weeks with core muscle injury

Vyncint Smith will be out for the next 5-8 weeks with a core muscle injury.

The New York Jets will be without one of their key wide receivers for the next month.

According to multiple reports, Vyncint Smith will miss 5-8 weeks with a core muscle injury. His muscle essentially ripped away from the bone, per The Athletic’s Connor Hughes. Smith will have surgery on Tuesday.

Smith’s injury is a significant blow to the Jets’ receiving corps. He was expected to see a lot of opportunities this season with the Jets being so thin at the position. In 2019, Smith recorded 17 catches for 225 yards in 13 games. He also had 52 rushing yards to go along with a touchdown on the ground.

The Jets signed Chris Hogan to a deal on Sunday, so he’ll likely take Smith’s spot on the depth chart for the time being. New York could potentially look to sign another veteran wide receiver to bring in some more experience at the position.

As for the rest of the Jets’ injuries, James Burgess tweaked his back in individual drills. Blake Cashman got first-team reps. Denzel Mims (hamstring), Pierre Desir (hamstring), Brian Poole (dehydration), Jabari Zuniga (quad), Cameron Clark (shoulder) and Bronson Kaufusi (hamstring) all have yet to practice for Gang Green.
