Packers sign 2016 third-round pick Bronson Kaufusi to futures deal

The Packers signed Bronson Kaufusi, now a tight end, to a reserve/future contract.

The Green Bay Packers added a 2016 third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens to the offseason roster with a futures deal.

The team signed tight end Bronson Kaufusi, who came into the NFL as a defensive lineman, to a reserve/future contract.

The 70th overall pick in 2016, Kaufusi has played in nine NFL games, tallying eight tackles and a half sack. He started making the transition from the defensive line to tight end during training camp with the New York Jets this summer.

Kaufusi’s career on defense never took off after breaking his ankle and missing his rookie season. He played in three games with the Ravens in 2017 and later played in six games with the Jets between the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Kaufusi is 29. He tallied 26.5 sacks during his four-year career at BYU.

The Packers list Kaufusi at 6-6 and 270 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.87 seconds and finished the three-cone drill in 7.03 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The Packers previously signed wide receiver Chris Blair, safety Innis Gaines and linebacker Ray Wilborn to futures deals last week.

Jets WR Vyncint Smith out 5-8 weeks with core muscle injury

Vyncint Smith will be out for the next 5-8 weeks with a core muscle injury.

The New York Jets will be without one of their key wide receivers for the next month.

According to multiple reports, Vyncint Smith will miss 5-8 weeks with a core muscle injury. His muscle essentially ripped away from the bone, per The Athletic’s Connor Hughes. Smith will have surgery on Tuesday.

Smith’s injury is a significant blow to the Jets’ receiving corps. He was expected to see a lot of opportunities this season with the Jets being so thin at the position. In 2019, Smith recorded 17 catches for 225 yards in 13 games. He also had 52 rushing yards to go along with a touchdown on the ground.

The Jets signed Chris Hogan to a deal on Sunday, so he’ll likely take Smith’s spot on the depth chart for the time being. New York could potentially look to sign another veteran wide receiver to bring in some more experience at the position.

As for the rest of the Jets’ injuries, James Burgess tweaked his back in individual drills. Blake Cashman got first-team reps. Denzel Mims (hamstring), Pierre Desir (hamstring), Brian Poole (dehydration), Jabari Zuniga (quad), Cameron Clark (shoulder) and Bronson Kaufusi (hamstring) all have yet to practice for Gang Green.

Jets injury report: Vyncint Smith latest WR to miss practice

Vyncint Smith’s core injury leaves the Jets very thin at wide receiver.

The Jets’ wide receivers group is getting thinner by the day.

Vyncint Smith became the second Jets receiver to go down with an injury as he missed Sunday’s practice with a core issue. Smith will see a specialist on Monday.

Denzel Mims missed his second straight day of practice with a hamstring injury. Adam Gase gave no update on a timetable for his return. With two injured receivers, the Jets signed free agent Chris Hogan. He won’t be able to practice for a few days until he goes through all the COVID-19 protocols, though.

Elsewhere, Cameron Clark is week to week as he deals with a shoulder injury. Brian Poole sat out of Sunday’s practice due to dehydration.

Pierre Desir also missed his second day of practice because of a hamstring injury. The injury isn’t considered serious, though. Bronson Kaufusi (hamstring) and Jabari Zuniga (quad) missed a second consecutive day of practice as well.

Jets injury report: Denzel Mims, Frank Gore, Pierre Desir miss practice with hamstrings

Denzel Mims, Frank Gore and two other Jets players missed practice due to hamstring injuries.

The Jets are one practice in and they’re already dealing with injuries.

New York completed its first official practice of training camp with no pads on Friday, but without a few key players. Denzel Mims, Frank Gore, Pierre Desir and Bronson Kaufusi all missed practice with hamstring injuries. Rookie Jabari Zuniga sat out of practice due to a quad injury.

Adam Gase said Mims took an awkward step while running routes on air a couple of days ago. Gase added that it’s not ideal for Mims, a rookie, to miss practice due to injury considering there were no OTAs or minicamp this offseason. Gase mentioned that the Jets could bring in a veteran wide receiver if Mims is out for an extended period of time.

Vyncint Smith got reps as the No. 3 wide receiver in place of Mims.

As for Gore, Gase said he tweaked his hamstring last week and the Jets sat him out of practice as a precaution. Gore has been doing some group work, though.

Jets’ Kaufusi bothers help their mayor mom in social distancing video

Jets’ Bronson and Corbi Kaufusi use their six-foot frames to help their mom, Michelle, show the citizens of Provo what social distancing is.

Social distancing is crucial in stopping the spread of the coronavirus and ensuring the NFL season starts on time. The idea is that everyone should keep at least six feet between each other to curb the human-to-human transmission of the virus.

But six feet is hard to visualize, sometimes, so the mayor of Provo, Utah, Michelle Kaufusi enlisted her NFL sons – Jets defensive linemen Bronson and Corbin Kaufusi – to give her citizens a visual representation of an appropriate social distance. Mayor Kaufusi urged everyone to stay at least a “Kaufusi” away from one another when leaving the house.

As you can see below, the Kaufsui brothers are actually a lot taller than six feet. Bronson is 6-foot-6 and Corbin is 6-foot-9. That extra length, though, helps reinforce the notion of how to keep yourself and others safe during this pandemic.

The Kaufusi family has deep ties to Provo. Michelle was born and raised in the city before becoming mayor in 2017 and her husband, Steve Kaufusi, is a former Philadephia Eagles defensive lineman who went to and coached the Brigham Young football team. Michelle, Bronson, Corbin and their third brother, Devin, all attended BYU as well.

Both Bronson and Corbin played on a crowded Jets’ defensive line and didn’t see much action in 2019. Bronson played in only three games, in which he recorded half a sack and three tackles. Corbin played on the practice squad this past season and signed a  reserve/future contract in December.
