Bengals waive DE Tarrell Basham

A roster move for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals made a noteworthy roster move before the team’s preseason finale, waiving defensive end Tarrell Basham.

That’s a pretty big name for the Bengals given he was a free-agent acquisition this offseason. But an injury on the first day of camp derailed his chance at making the final roster.

Basham was one of the top players we listed who were the best to possibly miss the final 53-man roster. But that was based on the arrival of first-rounder Myles Murphy and some unexpected names such as Raymond Johnson III having fantastic summers at one of the deepest positions on the team.

The move makes the final 53-man outlook slightly clearer, with Johnson and names like Jeff Gunter still sleepers to make it.

Bengals DE Tarell Basham floated as cut candidate

Is Tarell Basham a Bengals cut candidate to know?

The Cincinnati Bengals have some rather tough decisions to make along the defensive line at the upcoming cut-down day.

There’s especially a logjam at defensive end, where Trey Hendrickson, Sam Hubbard, Joseph Ossai and Cam Sample are the top five. Though off to a slow start, first-rounder Myles Murphy is there, too.

That would at least partially explain why Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox made Tarell Basham the pick as the likeliest notable Bengals cut:

The 29-year-old has played for four teams in six seasons, and aside from a three-year stint with the New York Jets, he’s never played more than 19 games with a franchise.

The Cincinnati Bengals have given Basham his latest chance, but he may find it to be short-lived. A leg injury suffered early in camp has prevented him from showing Cincinnati anything during the preseason.

There are other problems for Basham, too. Former late-round pick Jeff Gunter continues to look good as he heads into his second season. Plus, a roster longshot like Raymond Johnson has looked really good, too.

Given the injury factor, maybe Basham sticks on the roster through other means, but he’s quickly becoming one of the names to watch before cuts.

A 2023 profile for Bengals DE Tarell Basham.

The Cincinnati Bengals brought on defensive end Tarell Basham in free agency this offseason, a move that remained relatively quiet behind headline items such as Orlando Brown Jr.’s arrival.

Still, pass-rush was a major need and Basham has a proven career as depth in this area. Here’s a look at his profile as we continue counting down to the season opener.

Experience: 7 years (Round 3, 2017)

Age: 29

College: Ohio University

2022 PFF Grade: 73.7

Numbers to Know: 11 sacks, five forced fumbles, 35 QB hits over 82 games with 18 starts.

Resume and Outlook: The Bengals dipped into the Ohio University well with Basham for good reason. He’s played for a handful of different teams and never played more than 64 percent of the snaps for a defense. But he’s got experience all over the field, making him an interesting chess piece of sorts for coordinator Lou Anarumo. Jimmy Burrow, who coached him with the Bobcats, has spoken highly of what he brings to the table. A final roster spot isn’t necessarily a guarantee, but he should make it and boost the pass-rushing depth.

Tarell Basham’s Bengals contract details emerge

Another strong value signing for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals dipped into the local well in free agency with Ohio University product Tarell Basham to bolster the pass-rush of the defensive line.

And while it took a while, we now know contract details surrounding the deal. According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston, Basham’s contract is a $1.08 million salary with a few bonuses looped into incentives such as playing time.

It’s yet another nice, value contract for the Bengals similar to the deals given to cornerback Sidney Jones, tight end Irv Smith Jr. and offensive tackle Cody Ford.

Like Jones, Smith and Ford, Basham’s arrival won’t stop the team from addressing the position in free agency. But he’s going to have a shot to fit into the program and excel within the Bengals’ schemes and stick.

Outside of Orlando Brown Jr. and the deal for safety Nick Scott, this sort of smaller deal was the expectation for the Bengals going into this offseason.

Jimmy Burrow details what Bengals get in former Bobcats standout Tarell Basham

Tarell Basham played under Jimmy Burrow at Ohio University.

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t have to look far for opinions on new defensive lineman Tarell Basham.

Basham, after all, played at Ohio University under a guy by the name of Jimmy Burrow.

Before he was drafted by the Colts in 2017, Basham was a key pass-rusher for the Bobcats defense, then overseen by Jimmy, father of Joe Burrow.

In the days after the signing, Jimmy dished on what Lou Anarumo and Co. will get with their new defender.

“He can stand up and drop. I compare it to the way Sam Hubbard sometimes stands up,” Jimmy Burrow said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “They drop him and rush him, When he first came out, some people thought he could be a linebacker. But in the NFL, he’s a defensive end one way or the other. He can really run and has a good feel for the game. He’s long and very athletic. He can really rush the passer. It’s a really good fit whether it’s giving those guys a breather or putting speed on the field.”

It’s no wonder the Bengals struck a deal with Basham, who has been more than thrilled about going back to Ohio and joining Burrow and Co. for a run. He’s a fit based on what they want in the locker room and on the field as a rotational rusher to boost the defense before the draft.

Bengals sign ex-Titans OLB Tarell Basham

Former Titans OLB Tarell Basham is signing with the Bengals.

Former Tennessee Titans outside linebacker Tarell Basham has found a new home with the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency.

The news comes from Basham’s agent, Kenny Zuckerman, who did not reveal the length or financial terms of the contract. The Bengals will be the fifth team Basham takes a snap for if he makes the roster and plays.

Basham spent parts of the 2022 campaign with the Dallas Cowboys and Titans, who signed him out of sheer desperation due to injuries after he was waived by the Cowboys in late November.

The former third-round pick appeared in five games for Tennessee and tallied four assisted tackles (one for loss) and a QB hit. He failed to record a single stat in two games with Dallas.

Tennessee addressed their need for EDGE help with the signing of Arden Key, but it’s conceivable the Titans could add another at some point in the 2023 NFL draft.

Best reactions after Bengals sign DL Tarell Basham in free agency

Notable reactions to the latest Bengals move in free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals made a small splash on Friday before the calendar turns to April by signing defensive lineman Tarell Basham.

It’s a homecoming for Basham, who played for Ohio University before becoming a third-round pick in 2017.

For the Bengals, it’s a chance at beefing up the rotational pass-rush along the defensive line and adding even more versatility to Lou Anarumo’s scheme — all before the draft, where they could do more of the same.

Here are some of the best reactions to the signing for the Bengals, starting with the confirmation from his reps about a deal right at the top.

Instant analysis after Bengals sign DL Tarell Basham in free agency

Quick takeaways from Cincinnati’s latest move in free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals were unlikely to leave the defensive line unaddressed going into the upcoming draft.

That idea proved true on Friday with the team quietly signing former Ohio University standout Tarell Basham.

Basham was a third-round pick in 2017 by the Indianapolis Colts. He was waived in October 2018 and claimed by the New York Jets, then signed by the Dallas Cowboys in March of 2021, then waived late in 2022, where he signed with the Tennessee Titans.

Along the way, Basham has played all over the field, drumming up 11 sacks and five forced fumbles. A brief glance at the sheet shows he’s never played more than 64 percent of the snaps for a defense so far and has lined up on the ends of the line, inside and even at linebacker.

That’s exactly what the Bengals want, of course. Versatility and experience are a theme of Lou Anarumo’s scheme, so expect to hear plenty about how Basham will line up all over the defense in a rotational role.

At this stage of free agency, it’s surely a cost-effective move, too, meaning little risk but a potentially high reward.

As an added bonus to what looks like a nice value, Basham’s arrival won’t cause the Bengals to avoid adding to the pass-rush via the draft. There’s a good chance he can provide great competition for the likes of Jeff Gunter in camp, too.

As a whole, Basham isn’t the biggest splash for the Bengals by any means, but he’s a meaningful one as yet another addition capable of flourishing within Anarumo’s scheme.
