Several Saints highlighted in CBS Sports’ top 100 players of 2024

Several New Orleans Saints playmakers made the cut on CBS Sports’ list of the Top 100 Players of 2024, but they all play defense:

The long summer break between minicamp and training camp is a great opportunity to recalibrate and evaluate players around the NFL. Who is rising? Who is falling? How has the last year changed perceptions?

Here’s one good example. CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco shared his list of the Top 100 Players of 2024. There isn’t any scientific criteria or studious film work going into this list, so think of it more as a heat check from a national analyst. How did the New Orleans Saints make out?

Two Saints players were included in Prisco’s top-100 and a third was singled out as an honorable mention, but so was their former teammate Trey Hendrickson; the defensive end rocketed up to No. 33 overall after bagging nearly as many sacks (17.5) as the entire Saints defensive line combined for (22). But which Saints players were featured?

After not being listed at all last offseason, linebacker Demario Davis slotted in at No. 50 on Prisco’s list:

He is one of the leaders of their defense and one of the more underrated players in the league. He excels in both pass coverage and the run game. The only issue is his age at 35.

Davis was selected for just his second career Pro Bowl in 2023, but he earned his fifth consecutive spot on the All-Pro team. He and Bobby Wagner are the only players in the NFL to accomplish that. And Davis wasn’t alone on Prisco’s list.

While he took a small slide down the rankings after clocking in at No. 81 a year ago, safety Tyrann Mathieu was still comfortably inside the top-100. Prisco put him at No. 92:

Even at the age of 32, he continues to be a playmaker on defense. He has a knack for the ball and can do a lot of things. He can play near the line of scrimmage and also excel on the back end.

Mathieu has been a great pickup for the Saints. He’s intercepted more passes (7) than anyone else on the team since he signed his contract, and while he didn’t match his career-high 91 tackles from 2022 he was still very active and made a positive impact at every level of the field. If the Saints had a safety with more range to hang back deep, his versatility and dynamism would be even more obvious.

Additionally, cornerback Paulson Adebo was recognized as an honorable mention. He bounced back really well from a 2022 season that was full of penalties and injuries, setting new personal-bests for interceptions (4), passes defensed (18), forced fumbles (2), fumble recoveries (2), and tackles (76). He’s well on his way to stamping himself as a top-10 cornerback in this league, and it’s happening at the perfect time for him in the final year of his contract.

What’s troubling is that all three of these players line up on defense. At some point the Saints need to make more investments in their offense and ensure they can score points when the defense gets outmatched. There are some encouraging young players on that side of the ball like Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, but they can’t do it all by themselves. Let’s see if anyone steps up at training camp in a few weeks.

These 3 Chargers landed on CBS Sports’ top 100 players of 2024 list

Here’s a look at where several members of the Los Angeles Chargers landed.

CBS Sports writer Pete Prisco released his list of the top 100 players of 2024, and three Chargers made the list.

First up was quarterback Justin Herbert, who checked in at No. 41 overall.

He was limited to 13 games because of an injury last season, which saw his numbers at the lowest of his four-year career. He still remains one of the best passers in the game, but he has to start winning playoff games to truly up his reputation.

Herbert suffered a finger injury that cost him the final four games of last season. But he should return to form, even with a new scheme, which is expected to be predicated on running the ball.

Despite the new offensive approach, Herbert is one of the most prolific passers in the NFL, and I expect the coaching staff to still play to his strengths with his arm.

Next up was offensive tackle Rashawn Slater at No. 69 overall.

He is outstanding in pass protection, which is key for Justin Herbert. He does need to improve some in the run game, but that will come with Jim Harbaugh as coach.

After missing most of the 2022 season with a torn biceps, Slater returned and started all regular-season games in 2023. Upon returning to the field, he was prolific in the pass-blocking department, allowing just 38 pressures on 726 pass-block snaps.

The third representation of Los Angeles was edge defender Khalil Mack, who checked in at No. 79 overall.

After a few down seasons in terms of sack numbers, he had a career-best 17 in 2023. At 33, age is starting to be a concern, but he can still impact the passing game for the defense.

Mack set a career-high in sacks for a season with 17 and became the 43rd player in NFL history to hit the 100-sack mark. A menace off the edge, Mack not only got after the quarterback at a high level, but he was also a key contributor at defending the run.

CBS: Two Jaguars among NFL’s top 100 players of 2024

CBS: Two Jaguars among NFL’s top 100 players of 2024

CBS senior writer Pete Prisco included two Jaguars in his annual ranking of the top 100 players of the NFL on Tuesday, naming Jacksonville’s Josh Allen the league’s No. 23 overall player and No. 6 edge rusher and Trevor Lawrence as the No. 62 player and No. 10 quarterback.

Prisco’s top 100 was crafted “based on my evaluations, as well as some conversations with some league personnel,” he wrote in the article. “Mostly, though, it’s my list. So get mad at me.”

Allen took Lawrence’s former No. 23 spot on Prisco’s list this year after entering 2023 unranked.

In addition to his top 100 inclusion, Allen earned a five-year, $141.3 million contract extension from the Jaguars this offseason for the career performance he put together last year.

“[Allen] had his breakout season with 17 1/2 sacks in 2023, earning him a big contract extension from the team. He is a relentless pass rusher, who is good against the run as well. He proved to many — me included — that he can be a game-wrecker. (Last season: Not ranked)”

Allen also recorded single-season personal bests of 17 tackles for loss and 33 quarterback hits, leading to his second career Pro Bowl selection. His 45 career sacks rank second in Jaguars history, with the No. 1 mark, 55 by Tony Brackens, in sight.

While Lawrence fell almost 40 spots down this year’s list compared to last, Prisco believes the 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick is bound to bounce back in 2024 after receiving his own mega-extension from the Jaguars. Jacksonville gave Lawrence a five-year deal worth $275 million on Thursday.

The Jaguars opened the 2023 season 8-3, while Lawrence completed 67.9% of his passes for 3,004 yards with 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions in nearly 12 games, before suffering his first of three considerable injuries near the end of the year.

He went down with a high-ankle sprain in the fourth quarter of Week 13, suffered a concussion in Week 15 and sprained the A/C joint in his throwing shoulder during Week 16, forcing him out of Week 17 before returning for the season finale.

Lawrence completed 60% of his passes for 1,012 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions in the four games he played through injury.

“[Lawrence’s] 2023 season was a disappointment for a lot of reasons, including injury. He threw 21 touchdown passes and 14 picks as he pressed at times. I think he bounces back — with a hefty new contract — and has an MVP-type of season that will vault him up this list. (Last season: No. 23)”

Former Jaguars and current Miami cornerback Jalen Ramsey also made the list, ranked No. 43 overall and No. 5 at his position.

Chiefs drop to fourth place in Pete Prisco’s power rankings

CBSSports.com columnist Pete Prisco gave the #Chiefs the fourth spot in his latest NFL power rankings heading into Week 12.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football cost them the top spot in the AFC playoff standings, and knocked the team down in the power rankings of many NFL analysts heading into Week 12.

CBSSports.com columnist Pete Prisco put Kansas City in the fourth spot in his latest power rankings behind the Eagles, Detroit Lions, and Dallas Cowboys. The Chiefs were the only AFC team to appear in the top five, though the conference dominated the second tier in the sixth through tenth sports.

Kansas City wasn’t expected to rise in the rankings after their brutal defeat at the hands of Philadelphia this week, but the drop is still sure to sting for many fans who hoped a loss to the NFL’s top team wouldn’t cause a slide for the team in the eyes of the media.

The Chiefs will have their chance at redemption in Week 12 when they travel to Sin City to take on the Las Vegas Raiders.

Grading the graders: Looking back on New Orleans Saints draft expert grades

Grading the graders: Looking back on past New Orleans Saints draft expert grades from Mel Kiper Jr. and Pete Prisco

Everyone loves to throw out draft grades in the hours and days after the annual event (you can find our grades on the 2023 draft here), but how often do these experts hit the mark? To find out, we turned back the clock and went back to look at the New Orleans Saints draft grades running back to 2016, featuring takes from two of the longest-tenured draft analysts: ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco. Let’s see how they did:

Reaction to Ravens hire of OC Todd Monken overwhelmingly positive

Twitter was set ablaze with positive reactions to the Ravens’ decision to hire Todd Monken as their offensive coordinator this week

When the Baltimore Ravens settled on Todd Monken as their ideal hire for their vacant offensive coordinator position, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. From television pundits to former players, Twitter has been set ablaze with adulation for Baltimore’s decision.

The Ravens tweeted one photo that seemed to encapsulate the most important endorsements of Monken’s hire, which included praise from CBS’s Pete Prisco, as well as former Ravens in quarterback Robert Griffin III, tight end Benjamin Watson, and wide receiver Dez Bryant.

While social media reaction is hardly a guarantee of success for Baltimore in 2023, it seems that Monken’s hire has set the bar even higher for the Ravens next season as the team looks to get back into Super Bowl contention. Now, attention will shift toward the ongoing contract negotiations that the team is holding with franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson, whose presence in the team’s offense will be critical to their chances of winning a Lombardi Trophy in the near future.
