Calvin Ridley can solidify himself as a top 10 WR this season

Calvin Ridley is primed to climb back into the top 10 wide receiver conversation this year.

First-year Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley was a fringe top 10 receiver in his most recent full season in the NFL.

Ridley was the 11th best wide receiver and the No. 65 player in the league going into the 2021 season, according to NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2021 list as voted on by his peers. He only missed one game in 2020 and reeled in 90 passes for 1,374 yards.

However, he missed much of the following season due to injury and was suspended for the entirety of the 2022 season. His nearly two-year break from the NFL dropped him out of the conversation of the top receivers in the league.

This season, Ridley has a chance to look like his former self and remind the league why he is one of the best receivers in the game.

First, he’s playing with budding superstar Trevor Lawrence at quarterback. Ridley started his career with potential Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Matt Ryan. While Ryan was a tremendous player at his peak, earning MVP honors in 2016, Ridley caught the tail-end of Ryan’s career in Atlanta.

Ryan still put up monster numbers through the air, but the Falcons never had a winning season after drafting Ridley in 2018. This year, however, Ridley joins a Jaguars team that accomplished its first winning season since 2017, due in large part to Lawrence’s play.

Lawrence’s rookie season didn’t go as planned, and not much looked different in the early portions of last year. But he looked like a different player after Jacksonville’s Week 8 loss to the Denver Broncos on Oct. 30.

Lawrence was one of the best quarterbacks in the league after the loss. He threw for 2,273 yards, 15 touchdowns, and only two interceptions while completing nearly 70 percent of his passes for the rest of the regular season. That version of Lawrence is a player who will get the most out of Ridley.

If Lawrence reaches an MVP level of play, like many project, Ridley will have his best quarterback since maybe the 2018 version of Ryan. Perhaps even better.

Ridley will also be surrounded by playmakers, so he won’t receive all the attention from opposing defenses. In his final games in Atlanta, Ridley was clearly the best receiving threat, and defenses only had to worry about him.

Now, Ridley will play alongside Christian Kirk, who showed an ability to thrive in a No. 1 receiver role; Zay Jones, who had a stellar season as the Jags’ No. 2 option in 2022; and Evan Engram, who rose to the level of one of the top pass-catching tight ends in the league. There’s also Travis Etienne Jr.. who’s emerging as one of the best dual-threat running backs in the NFL.

Ridley isn’t likely to break into the top five wide receiver conversation, which includes the Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson, Miami Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill, Las Vegas Raiders’ Davante Adams, Buffalo Bills’ Stefon Diggs and Philadelphia Eagles’ A.J. Brown, according to NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2023 list.

However, it’s very possible he could compare to the rest of the top-10 — the Dallas Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb, Cincinnati Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase, Miami Dolphins’ Jaylen Waddle, Los Angeles Rams’ Cooper Kupp and Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Mike Evans.

Chase and Kupp have proven to be two of the top receivers in the last few years, and it’ll be a challenge for Ridley to keep up. But he could surpass or reach the level of Waddle, Lamb, and Evans, as well as Deebo Samuel and Amon-Ra St. Brown, who both finished just outside the top ten.

Samuel’s dual-threat ability is dangerous for opposing defenses, but his quarterback situation is less than ideal. St. Brown is a great security blanket, but he has a more limited array of talents than Ridley. That leaves not many players in the way of the Jaguars receiver breaking into the top 10.

Evans will start the season catching passes from Baker Mayfield and might even share the field with third-year quarterback Kyle Trask. He’ll deal with one of the worst quarterback situations in the league and is now in his age-30 season.

Waddle rounds out maybe the best receiving duo in the league, so it wouldn’t be a disappointment if Ridley didn’t reach his level. But Ridley is catching passes from a better quarterback and should be the No. 1 option, while Waddle is fighting for reps with maybe the best receiver in the league.

And Lamb has burst onto the scene as a top receiver in the league, reaching career-best heights last season. Brandin Cooks’ arrival should only help Lamb face less attention, so Ridley’s climb may stop there.

Ridley is coming off nearly two years away from the NFL and is going into his first year with Lawrence and the Jaguars. But if all goes right, he could soon be viewed as a top 10 receiver, something the team hasn’t had in decades.

NFL Top 100: 49ers lead NFL with 8 players listed on new set of rankings

Four members of the 49ers landed in the top 20 of the annual NFL Top 100 rankings, with one player in the top five. Here’s a look at where eight members of the 49ers were ranked in the 2023 NFL Top 100.

Heading into the 2023 season, the San Francisco 49ers have a loaded roster. Proof of that is the 49ers’ representation on the 2023 NFL Top 100 list. Current players from around the league vote to rank the top 100 players in the NFL from their performance from last season.

Prior to the start of a new season, NFL Network unveils the list with 10 player rankings per day. Reigning Super Bowl champ and NFL Most Valuable Player Patrick Mahomes unsurprisingly earned the top spot from the players. Although they didn’t have the No. 1 overall player on the list, the 49ers were well represented on this year’s edition of the Top 100.

The 49ers had eight players on the NFL Top 100 in 2023, including four players in the top 20 and one player in the top five. Edge rusher Nick Bosa led the 49ers on the list at No. 4, with Trent Williams, Fred Warner and George Kittle all earning spots in the top 20. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw and defensive back Talanoa Hufanga also made their debuts on the NFL Top 100.

Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, corner Charvarious Ward, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and defensive tackle Arik Armstead were all left off the list this year.

With eight players listed on the Top 100, the 49ers lead the NFL with the most players on the 2023 set of rankings.

Here’s a look at where multiple members of the 49ers were ranked on the 2023 NFL Top 100.

Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson make top 6 in NFL Top 100

Joe Burrow came in at No. 6, while Justin Jefferson ranked No. 2.

Former LSU stars [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] and [autotag]Justin Jefferson[/autotag] headlined the NFL Top 100, which is voted on by the league’s players.

Burrow came in at No. 6 after leading the Bengals on another deep playoff run in 2022, while Jefferson finished at No. 2 behind only Patrick Mahomes after leading the NFL in receiving and being named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2022.

College teammates and national champions with the Tigers in 2019, Burrow and Jefferson are joined in the top 100 by another member of that prolific offense in the former’s Cincinnati teammate, [autotag]Ja’Marr Chase[/autotag].

Chase came in at No. 39 in the NFL Top 100 countdown.

That 2019 squad has a claim as the best in college football history, and the continued NFL success of its stars has only bolstered that claim.

Chiefs take exception to Creed Humphrey’s nonappearance on ‘NFL Top 100’ list

The #Chiefs were less than thrilled that center Creed Humphrey wasn’t named to the ‘NFL Top 100’ list for the 2023 season.

Creed Humphrey has become one of the most dominant linemen in the NFL since joining the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 but was inexplicably left off the ‘NFL Top 100’ list ahead of the 2023 season.

The annual television program releases a ranking of the top 100 players in the league as voted on by their peers, and despite landing three Chiefs in the top 10, it seems that Kansas City was left wanting.

The team took its angst to Twitter on Tuesday, posting a picture of the decorated center, who looked about as disgruntled as Chiefs fans were when Humphrey was left off of the prestigious rankings.

Humphrey was a second-team All-Pro selection and a Pro Bowler in 2022 while helping Kansas City secure its second Super Bowl championship of the Patrick Mahomes era. He was Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded player at his position last season and has the tape to back up his claim to top-100 status, whether his peers agree or not.

Find out who Kansas City’s other winners were and more on today’s edition of Chiefs check-in for the morning of Tuesday, August 8:

Justin Jefferson ranks 2nd in NFL’s top 100

The peers of Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson view him highly ranking him as the second-best player in the NFL.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson is one of the best players in the league and his peers agree, ranking him the second-best player in the NFL’s top 100. Jefferson ranked only behind Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise to see Jefferson rated that highly by his peers. He was the offensive player of the year in 2022 with 128 receptions, 1,809 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also ranked 53rd in 2021 and 17th in 2022 on the NFL top 100.

You name it and Jefferson has done it. From the spectacular catch to being incredibly consistent, Jeffersons did it. He is an incredible route runner that does everything and then some.

Jefferson is a rare player and he is proving that every game. Here are some highlights that earned him the spot.

Rejoice Vikings fans, the best non-quarterback plays in purple and gold.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes takes top spot on ‘NFL Top 100’

#Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was ranked as the NFL’s best player by his peers on the “NFL Top 100” television program.

Patrick Mahomes has been nothing short of spectacular since taking over at quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018. He has won two Super Bowls, two MVPs, and singlehandedly altered the course of Chiefs history in just five seasons under center.

Mahomes, rightfully, ranked in the top spot on the annual “NFL Top 100” television program. The show surveys players around the league to determine who the best players in the NFL are, as voted on by their peers.

It should come as no surprise that the 27-year-old quarterback took first place, especially after his outstanding 2022 season. He joined teammates Chris Jones and Travis Kelce, who ranked 10th and fifth respectively, as the only Chiefs to be chosen for the prestigious list.

Though accolades like this are to be expected for a quarterback who has achieved as much as Mahomes, they serve as a reminder of the greatness that fans have had the privilege of witnessing for the last five years. Entering his sixth year as a starter Mahomes still has plenty to prove if he intends to chase Tom Brady’s legacy for the all-important “Greatest of All Time” status.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce ranks fifth on ‘NFL Top 100’

Travis Kelce joined Chris Jones in the top 10 on the “NFL Top 100” list after being ranked as the fifth-best player in the league.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been the most dominant player at his position for years, and his selection as the fifth-best player on the “NFL Top 100” television program was certainly warranted.

Kelce is among the league’s best pass catchers and has proven to be the most reliable target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes since the reigning MVP took over under center for Kansas City in 2018. The pair have two Super Bowl rings to show for their outstanding efforts and are among the NFL’s most iconic offensive duos.

The Chiefs’ offense would be far less dynamic without the decorated tight end’s talents to buoy the passing game, and any quarterback would be happy to share the field with an All-Pro security blanket like Kelce.

He joined defensive lineman Chris Jones, who placed 10th, as the only two Chiefs players to be ranked so far, though viewers have a sneaking suspicion that Mahomes will likely join his teammates at some point near the top of the list.

Here’s where Chiefs DT Chris Jones ranks on ‘NFL Top 100’ list

Take a look at where #Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones ranked on the “NFL Top 100” list for the 2023 season.

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones ranked 10th on the “NFL Top 100” list for the 2023 season. The annual television program counts down the league’s top players, as voted on by their NFL peers, who put together their rankings of the 100 best players in the league.

Kansas City did not have a single player chosen for any of the first 90 spots but finally got on the board with Jones’ selection at the 10th position. Though he was the first Chief to make the list, a certain reigning MVP, Patrick Mahomes, is expected to be ranked in the top three, and we here at Chiefs Wire are guessing that he won’t rank second or third.

Jones’ selection is certainly warranted, but his ongoing holdout from Kansas City’s training camp puts something of a damper on the excitement surrounding his place in the rankings.

Chiefs fans still haven’t seen Jones work out in St. Joseph with his teammates, and until he gets back on the field, there isn’t much to say about his outlook for the 2023 season or what an honor like this might mean for him.

Pat Surtain ranked No. 49 on NFL Top 100 list voted on by players

Pat Surtain was named the 49th best player in the NFL by his peers going into the 2023 season.

As NFL training camp season is officially underway, the Denver Broncos are gearing up under their first season with future Hall of Fame head coach Sean Payton. While Payton’s main thing is to shape the underwhelming offense, the defense, led by Pat Surtain, aims to make 2023 a banner year.

Surtain’s play on the field is continuously getting rewarded, as he has been ranked as the 49th best NFL player in the league, voted by his peers.

Surtain’s stats in 2022: 60 tackles, two interceptions, and ten pass deflections powered his way onto the list. With Payton steering a new culture for the Broncos, Surtain will have a coach that will match the intensity he helped bring to the defense with his play. Surtain will also play for a new defensive coordinator in Vance Joseph, as Joseph will look to build upon Surtain’s and the defense play. Congratulations to Surtain for landing on this list.
