The NFL Scouting Combine has come and gone, and many people are excited for the NFL offseason with free agency and the 2024 NFL draft right around the corner.

In New England, fans are itching to see the offensive talent the new regime will target. These are exciting times, but it’s also worth prefacing: The NFL combine is not a way to evaluate talent, but it is a way to finalize your draft board.

My 2024 draft kit is coming soon, and I utilized specific combine drills to finalize some matchups where the margins are smaller.

I think 10-yard split, 3-cone and other drills are more important than the 40-yard dash, vertical, long jump and bench press. Those specific drills will showcase what actually happens in a game, as opposed to the latter which happens in rare situations.

In the NFL, short area quickness, explosiveness and change of direction are valuable for evaluations. As I finalize my kit, It’s time we head into the true mock draft realm.

This time of the year is typically when I switch my mock drafts to what I think the Patriots will do, as opposed to what I want them to do. However, without any knowledge of what this regime will be doing in their first year, I am making these selections based on reports out there, who the team has been interviewing and who is on the roster currently.

Without further ado, let’s get right into the latest seven-round mock draft.

Things get wild for the Patriots in this final 2023 NFL mock draft.

As NFL draft week creeps in, it’s time for one last mock draft before the first team is on the clock.

The Patriots currently hold the 14th overall pick, and with rumors circulating on who they want, if they’ll trade up or down, or what position their leaning, it may ease some minds with one last mock draft.

In this mock draft, we’ll be going where I think the Patriots will go with their picks, but it is not a recommendation on what I think they should do. I just recently completed my draft kit with the top 10 at each position and a top-50 big board. So that’ll give you a sense of how I truly view this prospect class.

With the NFL Scouting Combine in the rearview, it’s time to check back in with the our latest, seven-round mock draft.

The Patriots have utilized an approach to find more explosive athletes in the draft, as they added Cole Strange, Tyquan Thornton, and Pierre Strong Jr.,  who all scored over a 8.5 RAS (relative athletic score) in 2022. Marcus Jones, although explosive, did not have an RAS score as he did not participate during the combine.

In this mock draft, like the others, we will be focusing on what the Patriots will likely do, rather than what I would do.

Twitter users predict Patriots to draft Georgia football QB Jake Fromm

Twitter users predict that New England Patriots draft former Georgia football QB Jake Fromm now that Tom Brady is exploring NFL Free Agency.

With Tom Brady’s announcement that he is leaving the Patriots and exploring NFL Free Agency, that left football fans wondering who will be the next quarterback in New England.

With the dominos starting to fall, Patriot-style quarterbacks are not widely available in this year’s free agency, so I’d expect New England to take a quarterback in this draft. It’s just a matter of whether or not to take an immediate starter early in the draft, or wait it out a little and get a guy who can be groomed for the future – like a Fromm.

If the Patriots do opt to go with Fromm later in the draft (they hold the No. 23, No. 87, No. 98 and No. 100 picks), it would make perfect sense.

For starters, Belichick loves Georgia players, a fact that he’s alluded to multiple times. He likes the way that Kirby Smart runs his program and prepares players for the league both mentally and physically.

We’ve seen that with his recent draft picks of Sony Michel and Isaiah Wynn, plus Mark Richt guys David Andrews and Malcolm Mitchell a few years earlier.

But there is one glaring issue — Simply put, Fromm was not very good last season. However, as inconsistent as his arm was in 2019, his mindset and preparation never wavered. Also, the play calling was horrendous…and I’m sure Belichick knows that.

Fromm really is the perfect fit for a Belichick offense, though. A drama-free, hard working leader who puts the team above anything else.

Following the news of Brady’s departure, Twitter users quickly went to the app to predict that Fromm winds in New England.

The excitement over the prediction varies, however.

 

Will Patriots target Georgia football QB Jake Fromm in NFL Draft?

With Tom Brady leaving the New England Patriots, could Bill Belichick target Georgia football QB Jake Fromm in the 2020 NFL Draft?

After a 20 year career with the New England Patriots, legendary quarterback Tom Brady announced that he would be leaving the team that he won six Super Bowl rings with.

I don’t need to tell you this, but that leaves an obvious hole at quarterback in New England.

With that being said, could the Patriots look to former Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm in the NFL Draft?

They have the No. 23 pick in the 2020 draft, one that they likely will not be using on Fromm, who is viewed as a third round prospect in April’s draft.

But the Pats also hold the 87th overall pick, and that’s where things could get interesting if Bill Belichick wants Fromm on his team.

Whether or not he’ll be available that late into the draft is hard to tell. I’ve seen him go anywhere from the second to fifth round. But if New England wants Fromm badly enough, it will do what it takes to get the Warner Robins native.

But that also raised the question –  does Belichick even want Fromm? Based off what we have seen in the past, I’ll go ahead and guess that he’d be thrilled to have a guy like Fromm in his quarterback room.

If you add Fromm to that offense, one that no longer includes Mitchell, that would be a Georgia fan’s dream.

Former Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who the Pats used a fourth-round pick on in 2019, is currently sitting atop the depth chart now that Brady is gone. I have not seen Stidham throw an NFL pass yet, but I can tell you right now, he’s not the long-term answer in New England.

7 Georgia Bulldogs taken in CBSSports’ full NFL mock draft

CBS Sports released a full NFL mock draft that included 7 Georgia football players being taken.

Most NFL mock drafts that we’ve seen over the past couple of months have had 2-3 Georgia football players going in the first round.

However, in CBS Sports’ most recent 7-round mock draft, the outlet has just one Dawg taken in the first round, and that’s left tackle Andrew Thomas.

Analyst Chris Trapasso projects the New York Jets to take Thomas with the No. 11 overall pick in the NFL Draft, which is currently scheduled for April 23 in Las Vegas.

On Thomas, Trapasso wrote:

Jets GM Joe Douglas knows how vital an offensive line is after his time in Philadelphia. Thomas was outstanding the two seasons at Georgia and has length for days.

Trapasso has Thomas ranked as the 15th overall player in the draft class and 4th ranked offensive tackle.

In total, Trapasso has seven Georgia players going in the draft.

Notre Dame Pair Featured in USA TODAY Mock Draft

The other Golden Domer that Middlehurst-Schwartz had going in round one would be headed to one of the few franchises still playing football this January.

As college football has concluded for 2019 and the NFL has just three more games of consequence we slowly start to turn to the annual blending of the two, the NFL Draft.

Next weekend will be the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama and coaches and scouts will get a chance to see the stars of tomorrow up close for a week.

With that in mind it is officially Mock Draft Season.

Perhaps the excitement in the air isn’t quite as rich as when the holidays hit in December but for football fans and followers it’s an interesting time to watch stocks rise and fall NFL bound players.

With that in mind the USA TODAY released their latest NFL Mock Draft on Thursday and a pair of key 2019 Notre Dame players made their way to the first round.

Here is who Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz has going and where he has them headed in April’s draft:

23. Patriots — Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame: While New England’s future with Tom Brady remains unclear, perhaps it’s time for Bill Belichick and Co. to focus on a different glaring issue. As the draft’s top talent at tight end, Kmet might help fill the Rob Gronkowski-sized hole in this offense.

Ah, the natural fit. If you’re a tight end you want to go to Notre Dame because they turn out more talent than anyone else at the position. Meanwhile if you’re in the NFL it’s hard to find many places better to play than New England where so much of their offensive success over the last two decades has been built on great tight ends. This would be a dream scenario for Kmet.

The other Golden Domer that Middlehurst-Schwartz had going in round one would be headed to one of the few franchises still playing football this January.

29. Titans — Julian Okwara, DE/OLB, Notre Dame: Mike Vrabel has thrown an assortment of players into the pass-rushing mix, yet none have proven consistent threats. Tennessee can ramp up its efforts on this front by grabbing Okwara, who’s still learning the finer points of his position but has a tantalizing athletic profile.

Will Okwara end being a first round pick? It depends you ask, read or follow as he is seemingly very much on the bubble there. After what they’ve done the last two weekends and really since the middle of the regular season Okwara would be walking into a place to likely to compete for something big again.
