Which former Gators are playing in Super Bowl LVIII?

For the 22nd year in a row, a former Florida Gator will play in the Super Bowl, and two could make history with back-to-back rings.

Now that we know which teams are playing in Super Bowl LVIII, we know which former Florida Gators will be a part of the big game.

Several former Gators have played in (and won) Super Bowls. In fact, this is the 22nd Super Bowl in a row to feature a player who spent his college years in Gainesville. Legendary Dallas Cowboys running back Emmit Smith and linebacker Godfrey Myles both won back-to-back Super Bowls in the early ’90s.

This year, five Gators are a part of the two organizations playing for the Lombardi trophy. Let’s take a look at each of them.

Former Gators safety among UDFAs most likely to make an NFL roster

This former Gator might be one of the best among the UDFAs next season.

Florida football had 10 former players eligible for the 2023 NFL draft, in which six ex-Gators were selected. Among that handful of UF alumni, six were selected in the seven rounds of the draft, leaving four as undrafted free agents.

One of the members of the Orange and Blue who did not hear his name called at the end of April was safety [autotag]Trey Dean III[/autotag], who signed a contract with the New York Jets following the festivities as an undrafted free agent. Now, according to Fannation’s recent article covering the UDFAs who are most likely to make an NFL roster, the five-year letterman made the cut for the green team in the Big Apple.

Dean was a five-year producer at an SEC school and the versatile safety may be the quintessential diamond in the rough at a position of need. The Jets did not re-sign FS Lamarcus Joyner, vacating a spot in the room. The 6’2″ Dean, who can play both safety roles, carried a sixth-round grade, but went undrafted likely due to a 4.75-second 40-yard dash time. Despite the disappointing 40, Dean impressed in other areas of the pre draft testing process. He topped all safeties at the Combine in the 225-pound bench press (25 reps) after snagging an interception during the East West Shrine Bowl game.

Dean won the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl Defensive MVP award but saw his draft stock take a hit as a result of his 40-yard dash time during the NFL scouting combine. His 4.75-second performance ranked last out of 18 safety prospects participating in the event.

Despite being a few steps slow on the track, Dean proved his mettle his by leading the safeties with 25 reps on the 225-pound bench press. Apparently, the Jets apparently saw something to work with in his talents and signed him to a rookie deal that features $100,000 in guaranteed money — including a $10,000 signing bonus.

Former Michigan safety transferring to Florida

Billy Napier wanted to add another defensive back to the roster through the spring transfer portal, and he’s found his man in former Michigan safety RJ Moten.

The Florida Gators earned a commitment from Michigan transfer safety [autotag]RJ Moten[/autotag] on Tuesday, one day after his official visit.

Moten is a Florida legacy. His dad, Ron Moten Sr., played for the Gators from 1982-1986 and was drafted in the sixth round by the Philadephia Eagles. The junior Moten joins the Orange and Blue with two years of eligibility left.

A former four-star recruit, Moten signed with the Michigan Wolverines in 2020 and appeared in one game on special teams as a freshman before redshirting.

His second year in Ann Arbor was more eventful. Moten played in all 14 of the Wolverines’ games and started five of them. As a junior in 2022, he started 10 games at safety, but eventually lost the job to Makari Page. With younger talent also improving and forcing competition, Moten’s best career move was to hit the transfer portal after spring practices.

Now, Moten will join a safety room that is losing two starters from a season ago in Florida. [autotag]Trey Dean III[/autotag] and [autotag]Rashad Torrence II[/autotag] both signed undrafted free-agent contracts with NFL teams and Moten offers a veteran replacement to either of those two. He could also wind up playing the STAR position, which was left vacant when [autotag]Tre’Vez Johnson[/autotag] transferred out.

Sophomores [autotag]Kamari Wilson[/autotag] and [autotag]Miguel Mitchell[/autotag] are expected to play significant roles in Florida’s secondary, and senior [autotag]Jadarrius Perkins[/autotag] might be the only other lock for playing time as an expected starter.

New York Jets sign S Trey Dean III as UDFA

Trey Dean III might not have heard his name called during the draft, but he quickly signed a free-agent deal with the New York Jets to start his pro career.

The New York Jets are taking a chance on longtime Florida safety [autotag]Trey Dean III[/autotag] as an undrafted free agent signing.

Dean’s five years with the Gators featured plenty of ups and downs, but he leaves the program with 259 total tackles (141 solo), 24 pass deflections, 13.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, four interceptions and a forced fumble.

During UF’s pro day, Dean explained that he’d been dealing with labral hip tears that would require surgery. Plenty of teams still met with Dean leading up to the draft, but it looks like no one was willing to risk a pick on a player with healthy concerns heading into the offseason.

It might take some development to turn Dean into an NFL-caliber player, but he’s a dynamic defensive back that hits hard and tackles better than most fans give him credit for.

Dean is the second Gator to sign as an undrafted free agent following [autotag]Richard Gouraige[/autotag] to the Bills. Six former Florida football players heard their names called during the draft.

The Indianapolis Colts selected quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] with the fourth overall pick. Defensive lineman [autotag]Gervon Dexter Sr[/autotag]. (Chicago) and Torrence came off the board in the second round. Linebackers [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag] (Jacksonville) and [autotag]Amari Burney[/autotag] (Las Vegas) went in the fourth and sixth rounds, respectively.

Where Florida players stand on ESPN Mel Kiper’s final Big Board

It’s draft season and plenty of former Gators are hoping to hear their names called. Here’s where ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. ranks them just days before the big event.

The 2023 NFL draft is almost ready to begin, and that means draft analysts are locking in their final projections and Big Boards ahead of the big day. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. is one of the most well-known analysts in the country and he published his final list on Tuesday.

Quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] leads the bunch at No. 7 overall, followed by offensive guard [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] at No. 61 and defensive tackle [autotag]Gervon Dexter Sr[/autotag]. at No. 103 overall. Richardson is ranked fourth among quarterbacks in the draft class, Torrence is ranked third among guards and Dexter is the No. 10 defensive tackle.

Kiper’s takes on Florida’s top prospects are interesting. Richardson has been projected to go as high as No. 1 overall, but Kiper sees his stock falling ever so slightly. Torrence has been considered the top guard in the draft for a while, so seeing him at No. 3 is also peculiar.

“Richardson is still very raw,” Kiper wrote. “His mechanics and footwork need a lot of work. He has accuracy issues on shorter throws that should be easier. And yet, the arm strength and the dual-threat ability are so intriguing that a team near the end of Round 1 absolutely could take him and let him develop.”

Plenty of other Gators made the positional rankings.

On offense, wide receiver [autotag]Justin Shorter[/autotag] is No. 43 in his position group, and  [autotag]Richard Gouraige[/autotag] is the 23rd-best offensive tackle. Defensively, linebackers [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag] and [autotag]Amari Burney[/autotag] come in at Nos. 15 and 25, respectively.

Former Gator [autotag]Brenton Cox Jr[/autotag]. was dismissed from he team but is still ranked No. 18 among outside linebackers. Finally, [autotag]Trey Dean III[/autotag] and [autotag]Rashad Torrence II[/autotag] are ranked Nos. 27 and 28, respectively, among safeties by Kiper.

Patriots pull off three trades in final seven-round 2023 mock draft

Things get wild for the Patriots in this final 2023 NFL mock draft.

As NFL draft week creeps in, it’s time for one last mock draft before the first team is on the clock.

The Patriots currently hold the 14th overall pick, and with rumors circulating on who they want, if they’ll trade up or down, or what position their leaning, it may ease some minds with one last mock draft.

In this mock draft, we’ll be going where I think the Patriots will go with their picks, but it is not a recommendation on what I think they should do. I just recently completed my draft kit with the top 10 at each position and a top-50 big board. So that’ll give you a sense of how I truly view this prospect class.

All weekend long, stay tuned to Patriots Wire for draft coverage, the undrafted free agent tracker and more. For now, let’s get into the seven-round mock draft.

The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar: Greg’s 2023 NFL Draft All-Underrated Team

In this week’s episode of “The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell,” Greg names his favorite underrated prospects in the 2023 NFL draft.

Every week, in “The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire talks with Greg Cosell of NFL Films and ESPN’s NFL Matchup about the intricacies of the game. With the 2023 draft just around the corner, Greg gets into six of his favorite underrated players in this draft class — guys who won’t be taken in the first round, and maybe not even in the second round, but Greg just enjoyed watching their tape, and he believes them to have impact potential at the next level.

In addition, Greg and Doug get into concepts about the draft, and current positional value, that are highly relevant to the NFL today.

Here are Greg’s All-Underrated players:

  • Tank Bigsby, RB, Auburn
  • Eric Gray, RB, Oklahoma
  • Xavier Hutchinson, WR, Iowa State
  • Riley Moss, CB, Iowa
  • Jartavius Martin, DB, Illinois
  • Trey Dean III, S, Florida

Patriots’ full 7-round 2023 mock draft 7.0

Multiple trades and even a surprise first-round pick highlights this seven-round mock draft for the Patriots.

The 2023 NFL draft is two weeks away, and it’s hard to contain the excitement, fear, anxiety or any other feelings that come up when trying to manifest a good draft for such an unpredictable team like the New England Patriots.

New England still holds the No. 14 overall pick, but in this “what they would do” mock draft, that changes with a big first-round trade. Who knows? Maybe the same is the case when the time actually comes for the Patriots to turn in their first player card on April 27.

Let’s get into this full 7-round mock draft.

Patriots’ full 7-round 2023 mock draft 6.0

A full seven-round 2023 NFL mock draft for the Patriots after free agency.

The first wave of the NFL free agency period has come and gone, and the New England Patriots have seemingly dialed down the activity of moves. So it’s a perfect time for another mock draft.

As with the previous mock drafts, we have shifted to a what the Patriots will do, rather than what we would do approach. For anyone that has followed the team over the years, they typically have some surprises in store when the draft board goes live.

It’ll be fun to see how the real thing goes down in April. Until then, here is our latest seven-round 2023 NFL mock draft for the Patriots.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 40, Florida DB Trey Dean III

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Florida defensive back Trey Dean III.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL draft.

Trey Dean III is as versatile as they come. The Florida defensive back played all over the secondary during his five years playing in the Swamp.

That versatility is a big reason why the Florida defensive back checks in at No. 40 in the Unpacking Future Packers countdown.

During his first year on campus, Dean picked off one pass and broke up seven more. In 2019, Dean recorded 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and one interception. In 2020, Dean recorded one sack and one interception. During the 2021 season, Dean recorded 88 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, and eight pass deflections. This past season, Dean recorded 81 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and four pass deflections.

“Dean had a solid season in an otherwise forgettable defensive corps for Florida,” Adam Dubbin, the editor of GatorsWire.com said. “While his play wasn’t brilliant, he was one of the more consistent players on his side of the line of scrimmage. At times he would make big plays, but at others, mental lapses and lack of field awareness caused some problems.”

Dean may be one of the most versatile defensive backs in the 2023 NFL Draft. During his time as a Gator, Dean played on the boundary (699 snaps), in the slot (616 snaps), and at safety (678 snaps). Dean also played in the box. He’s a player that’s capable of wearing multiple hats for a defensive coordinator.

“While Dean has played at all of the positions in the defensive backfield at some point, the role of safety seems to fit him the best,” Dubbin said. “But much of that has to do with the coaching staff’s philosophy. He has the physical size and length to go toe-to-toe with a tight end or a slot receiver as well as on the outside at corner which should benefit him at the next level.”

Dean is a long safety. That length helps him choke passing lanes. While he didn’t run fast, he has adequate range and showed the ability to run with wide receivers downfield.

“Dean’s ability to react to throws with little wasted motion, his strong man-coverage ability in the slot, and his length make it difficult to get the ball past him,” Dubbin said.

Dean may not be the fastest guy on the football field. Having said that, a player doesn’t log 2,975 snaps for the Florida Gators by being a poor athlete. Dean plays faster than his 40-time. Part of the reason why he plays so fast is his high football IQ.

“Along with his athletic build, Dean is a smart young man,” Dubbin said. “He is a five-time SEC Honor Roll member and already graduated with a degree in Education Sciences back in 2021. That intellect will be very helpful when it comes to learning pro ball playbooks.”

With his build and strength, Dean has flashes of being a menace against the run. He’s more than willing to stick his nose in against the run. Due to his length, he has a large tackle radius.

However, the missed tackles will be an issue. Over the past two seasons, Dean missed 28 tackles.

“Dean’s missed tackles is probably his Achilles heel and too many times we have seen him on the ground while the opponent keeps going,” Dubbin said. “Given his size and strength (he had the most bench press reps at the NFL combine among safeties), he should be able to fix that with the right coaching.”

Dean finished his career at Florida with 386 snaps on special teams. That experience on special teams could help the versatile defensive back make an immediate impact during his rookie season.

“It is not far-fetched to think that Dean could contribute on special teams from day one, but his missed tackles issue will be a significant hindrance in that role,” Dubbin said. “He definitely sees playing time on special teams long before he gets snaps on defense.”

Fit with the Packers

The Packers need to make improvements at the safety position. With his versatility, Joe Barry could line up in the slot, on the boundary, or at safety. On top of all that, Dean could make an immediate impact on special teams.

“Dean has a good athletic build with nice long arms, traits that you simply cannot teach,” Dubbin said. “Additionally, his solid man-cover ability and intellect make him an intriguing option in the later rounds who at worst would make a solid addition to the practice squad.”

All that versatility is nice. However, the missed tackles piled up and he clocked a 4.75 40-time at the NFL Scouting Combine. Those two things could keep him off Green Bay’s board.

“The biggest concern is that he’s a bit on the slow side, finishing at the bottom in the 40-meter and 10-second split at the combine,” Dubbin said. “Still, he has enough going for him that he could be a sleeper in the NFL with some tinkering.”

Dean is a day-three pick. The Packers currently hold two picks in the fifth round and four picks in the seventh round.

With his versatility, length, and special teams experience, Dean could be a target for the Packers with one of those picks as they look to bolster their depth in the secondary while adding a player with plenty of special teams experience.
