Cowboys address remaining needs in 2022 Day 3 mock draft

What needs do the Cowboys still need to fill and what kind of haul would help fill them. @CDPiglet has a mock draft to help guide things.

The Cowboys had three major needs for the 2022 draft and they believe they filled them with the first three picks afforded them. Tyler Smith will fill the hole at left guard vacated by Connor Williams. Edge rusher Sam Williams was a player the Cowboys organization loved, and they were not gonna risk losing him waiting for pick 88. Wideout Jalen Tolbert was the second player in contention for the pick at 56, and he lasted until the third round. An easy choice for Dallas.

With the self-inflicted holes at edge and WR filled in Day 2 of the draft, and the offensive line cover at pick 24, the question is what other needs are needed to be filled in Day 3. Dalton Schultz on a franchise tag, plus with how the Cowboys handle the cap, it makes tight end the biggest need on the team. Dallas also needs a starting one technique, linebacker depth, and running back is a sneaky need due to Tony Pollard being on a one-year deal and Ezekiel Elliott having an out in his contract at the end of the season.

Here’s a mock draft to see how Dallas can go about rounding out their draft haul.

Lions Day 2 mock draft: Time to build the defense

Lions Day 2 mock draft: Time to build the defense with an updated mock draft from Max Gerber

After finding playmakers for both sides of the ball on the first night of the draft, the Detroit Lions head into the second day with two more draft picks and plenty of high-level options still on the board.

The Lions currently have one pick in each of the two rounds for Day 2 of the draft. General manager Brad Holmes traded away their original second and third-round selections to move up and acquire Jameson Williams in the first round, but received back the 46th overall pick. The Lions will also draft at pick 97 in the third round.

Now that they have made their aggressive moves in the first round, it’s time for them to stay put with the draft capital they have and start patching up the remaining holes in the roster.

Here’s how their next two picks should play out:

Round 2, pick 46: LB Chad Muma, Wyoming

The Detroit Lions have not invested heavily in off-ball linebackers in recent years, and have struck out on the few early picks they’ve had at that position such as Jahlani Tavai and Jarrad Davis.

If Muma were to join the Lions, he could carve out a role nicely as he’d be not only the fasted inside linebacker rostered, but quite possibly their best in coverage as well. Detroit did draft Derrick Barnes last year and recently re-signed veterans Alex Anzalone and Shaun Dion Hamilton, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement at the inside linebacker position.

Muma would likely be used as a reserve for the first few games while he adjusts to the pro level of play, but he could easily find himself as a full-time starter by his second season.

Round 3, pick 97: S Kerby Joseph, Illinois

Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

With yet another defensive pick, it shouldn’t be surpassing that the Lions would opt for some extra help at safety.

Detroit recently extended free safety Tracy Walker and inked one of this offseason’s top free agents in DeShon Elliott, but there’s still more of a need at the position than many might think.

Aaron Glenn’s defense utilizes many three-safety looks as well as some nickel and dime subpackages, meaning Detroit needs to make sure they have at least one more capable safety on the roster other than Walker and Elliott.

The Lions front office has already shown some interest in Joseph as well, seeing that they brought him in for a top-30 visit not too long before the draft.

Joseph could easily play that extra safety role for Detroit while waiting in the wings for when Elliott’s one-year deal expires to take over the starting gig.

2022 NFL mock draft: Updated projections for 2nd, 3rd rounds

After a wild first round, check out this updated mock draft for Day 2 of the 2022 NFL draft

After a wild first round that was stuffed with twists and turns, trades and surprises, the 2022 NFL draft now moves on to Day 2, where the best teams can still find superstar players and key contributors.

There’s plenty of promising talent still left on the board after Thursday night’s top 32 picks, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see more movement at the top of Friday night’s action.

Here’s an updated look at how the second and third rounds of this year’s draft could play out:

Mock Draft consensus: Who is favored to go 2nd overall to the Lions?

Searching through 100 random mock drafts, which player is favored to go 2nd overall to the Detroit Lions in the 2022 NFL Draft?

The day has finally arrived! Finally, after all the months of tape analysis and interviews, teams are about to embark on injecting youth into their roster by adding some of these young men in hopes of turning their franchise around or getting over the hump through the 2022 NFL Draft.

With all of the speculation and possible team fits, mock drafts have been coming by the boatload, with analysts and experts trying to do their best to figure out which team might do what with the draft looming ever so closer.

Tapping into 100 random mock drafts from the NFL Mock Draft database, we analyzed the players everyone believes to be selected at the 2nd overall spot for the Detroit Lions, and below is the breakdown of those mock drafts.

Aidan Hutchinson – 73
Kayvon Thibodeaux – 17
Travon Walker – 6
Malik Willis – 1
Ahmad Gardner – 1
Derek Stingley Jr – 1
Jermaine Johnson – 1

As you can see, this one was not even close, with local Michigan product Aidan Hutchinson being the runaway favorite amongst analysts to be the Lions pick when they are on the clock. He fits everything the Lions look for in a player and will instantly become a leader on defense as a cornerstone franchise player.

Due to the amount of smoke and fire surrounding Travon Walker possibly being the favorite to be the first selection in the draft, Hutchinson has been dropping to the Lions. Most wouldn’t put up a fight, all things considering.

Kayvon Thibodeaux takes second place, with 17 mock drafts going in his favor. To say the Lions are enamored by him is an understatement after Detroit sent multiple team personnel to watch his Pro Day. Even to a point in an interview, Thibodeaux mentioned he has been in constant communication with Dan Campbell and joked around that he has him on speed dial.

As mentioned, Walker has seen his draft stock rise, and most expect to hear his name first, but if the Jaguars pass, the Lions could take a shot. Walker has been a player many individuals have kept their eyes on due to his freakish athleticism and high motor. He might need some refinement, but he is a player you bet on with the uncoachable traits he processes.

Honestly, I was expecting to see Malik Willis’ name more in these mock drafts, but the heat has died down on the front, with most having the Lions taking a quarterback later in the draft. Sauce Garder and Derek Stingley Jr will surely upgrade the cornerback room, but the Lions have several other holes that need plugging and maybe a luxury pick. Jermaine Johnson is another edge rusher who could hear his name called due to his production, but the second pick maybe to high considering the players available.

Mock drafts are fun critical thinking exercises that bring out numerous scenarios, but anything could happen with this draft being all over the place. So it’ll be interesting to see how everything plays out within the next few days.
