Nic Anderson named a freshman All-American by FWAA

The accolades keep on coming as Nic Anderson was named a freshman All-American by FWAA.

We are nearly a month since the 2023 college football season for the Oklahoma Sooners came to a close. Still, the accolades keep on coming for the Sooners.

This time, it’s for wide receiver [autotag]Nic Anderson[/autotag]. Anderson was named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team, the FWAA announced Tuesday. Anderson joins [autotag]Marvin Mims Jr.[/autotag] as the only Sooners to be recognized by the FWAA as freshman All-Americans.

Anderson finished the year with 798 yards and 10 touchdowns on 38 receptions. His 10 touchdowns were a school freshman record, and his 798 receiving yards are the second most ever by an OU freshman, falling nine yards short of [autotag]CeeDee Lamb[/autotag]’s record.

He ranked fifth nationally with his 21.0 yards per reception and he registered at least 100 receiving yards three times on the year and 90 or more receiving yards in five games.

Anderson was a touchdown machine. He scored multiple touchdowns twice this season. His coming out party was when he snagged three touchdowns on three receptions with a season-high 120 yards at [autotag]Tulsa[/autotag].

He also scored twice while gaining 105 yards on five catches against [autotag]UCF[/autotag]. His most memorable play was when he caught the game-winning touchdown against the Texas Longhorns with 15 seconds remaining.

He had 119 yards on four catches against [autotag]West Virginia[/autotag]. He made his record-setting 10th touchdown on a great catch in the [autotag]Alamo Bowl[/autotag] against [autotag]Arizona[/autotag] on a great throw by [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag].

Anderson was also named a Freshman All-American by The Athletic and was a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

2023 NFL draft: Best available prospects for Giants on Day 2

As we enter Day 2 of the 2023 NFL draft, here are some of the best available prospects for the New York Giants (who will have two picks).

The 2023 NFL draft got off to a wild and unpredictable start on Thursday night and that continued throughout Round 1.

The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen pulled off a surprise of their own, trading up to No. 24 overall to select Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks.

With one major need now out of the way, Schoen and the Giants can readjust on Friday and tackle two more needs with their pair of Day 2 picks — No. 57 overall and No. 89 overall. And don’t be surprised if they move up again.

Here’s a look at the best available prospects remaining for the Giants in Round 2 and 3.

Cowboys’ top 5 offensive prospects per position in 2023 NFL draft

Top five prospects for the Cowboys at quarterback, running back, receiver, tight end, offensive tackles, and interior offensive line. | From @cdpiglet

Unlike most recent seasons where fans wait until the middle of spring for major additions, the Dallas Cowboys are about to add to an already fruitful offseason. Not only did they bring back key guys, but they got outside help with trades for both CB Stephon Gilmore and WR Brandin Cooks.

The work during this free agency period has helped close the major holes on the team and left the draft open for multiple options. Here are the top five offensive options at each position in this draft.

Patriots pull off three trades in final seven-round 2023 mock draft

Things get wild for the Patriots in this final 2023 NFL mock draft.

As NFL draft week creeps in, it’s time for one last mock draft before the first team is on the clock.

The Patriots currently hold the 14th overall pick, and with rumors circulating on who they want, if they’ll trade up or down, or what position their leaning, it may ease some minds with one last mock draft.

In this mock draft, we’ll be going where I think the Patriots will go with their picks, but it is not a recommendation on what I think they should do. I just recently completed my draft kit with the top 10 at each position and a top-50 big board. So that’ll give you a sense of how I truly view this prospect class.

All weekend long, stay tuned to Patriots Wire for draft coverage, the undrafted free agent tracker and more. For now, let’s get into the seven-round mock draft.

Giants will host Oklahoma WR Marvin Mims Jr. for top-30 visit

The New York Giants will host Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. on one of their top-30 visits.

The New York Giants will host Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. for a top-30 visit sometime in mid-April.

Mims made the reveal in a recent interview.

Mims is the brother of former second-round draft pick Denzel Mims who was selected by the New York Jets.

The younger brother was a standout receiver for the Sooners as he has totaled 123 receptions, 2,398 receiving yards, and 20 touchdowns in three seasons. However, Mims really emerged onto the scene in his junior season where he posted 54 catches for 1,083 yards and six touchdowns.

Mims stands at 5-foot-11 and 183 pounds, so he would be a little on the smaller side for New York but would be yet another athletic speedster to add to this receiving core. He posted a 39.5” vertical leap and 4.38 40-yard dash at the NFL combine.

Many think Big Blue is one offensive skill piece away from being a dominant offense and an explosive player like Mims could do just the trick.

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: WR Marvin Mims Jr., Oklahoma

How does the undersized speedster profile in the NFL?

Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. declared for the NFL following a breakout junior campaign and is poised to be among the top five or so wideouts chosen in the 2023 NFL Draft.

He was rewarded for his efforts with first-team All-Big 12 honors by FBS coaches and was second-team selection from the Associated Press. Mims also earned second-team Academic All-Big 12 recognition.

Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 183 pounds
40 time: 4.38 seconds

Mims was a standout receiver in high school, too, setting Texas state records for career and single-season receiving yards, highlighted by a Tecmo Bowl-like stat line of 117-2,629-32 touchdowns as a senior.

Table: Marvin Mims stats (2020-22)

Year School Class G Rushing Receiving
Att Yds Avg TD Rec Yds Avg TD
*2020 Oklahoma Fr 11 37 610 16.5 9 2 17 8.5 0
*2021 Oklahoma So 13 32 705 22.0 5 1 15 15.0 0
*2022 Oklahoma Jr 13 54 1,083 20.1 6 2 3 1.5 0

*includes postseason/bowl games (stats from Sports Reference)

Pros

  • Blazing-fast strider whose speed can sneak up on a defender in a hurry — several examples of him blowing past a cornerback to create laughable separation
  • Operates primarily from the slot but can move all over the field to create mismatches
  • Special teams returner experience
  • Can be game planned into any system to attack from all three levels and offers game-breaking ability even in a limited role
  • Great body control to catch passes in traffic by contorting to find the right placement
  • Tracks ball well down the field and has quality hands in general
  • Tough to overthrow
  • Competitive spirit who is a known for a strong work ethic

[lawrence-related id=475794]

Cons

  • Limited route experience, which can make him easier to game plan against early in his development
  • Needs to incorporate a wider variety of moves to shake press coverage at the line of scrimmage
  • Lacks ideal size in jump-ball situations, despite sporting a healthy 39 1/2-inch vertical
  • Doesn’t have the kind of wiggle and agility some may expect to see from a receiver with his explosiveness

Fantasy football outlook

A really fair athletic and stature comparison is Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney. Now, due to situational reasons, Mooney hasn’t been utilized as much as a downfield much as his skills suggest, but their traits are extremely similar.

Mims, a probable Day 2 selection, doesn’t profile as a true WR1 in the pros. He should make for a strong second option and could serve as dangerous vertical threat, like Hollywood Brown. In Year 1, regardless of where he lands, Mims could have a few plays per week designed to take advantage of his raw speed. It doesn’t take much route knowledge to run a nine route or catch a screen and run like the wind.

Mims’ likeliest long-term outlook is that of a low-volume, big-play type. That will help keep him involved in most settings, but it makes for a frustrating go of it in fantasy. At best, Mims is a late-round flier in conventional fantasy drafts. He’s more suited to offer matchup-based utility in daily fantasy action.
