Oregon State Beavers College Football Preview 2021: Offense

For a seven game season and a 2-5 record, Oregon State’s offense had its moments. Its ground game rumbled all over Oregon, it was terrifically balanced over the last two losses to Stanford and Arizona State, and to be harsh about it, most of the issues were on the other side of the ball.

The O, though, wasn’t great at keeping the chains moving, the passing game wasn’t efficient enough and there weren’t enough downfield plays, and it was a bit too reliant on RB Jermar Jefferson, who’s now trying to be a Detroit Lion. So now …

The ground game has options at tailback, but Jefferson was outstanding over the last three seasons. Deshaun Fenwick is a 6-2, 226-pound blaster who comes in from South Carolina and should be a factor right out of the gate. Combine him with 208-pound junior BJ Baylor – who ran for 124 yards and a score last season – and the backs should be okay as long as the front five can continue to be solid.

The Beavers got a good year out of the line that led the way for close to 200 rushing yards per game and finished 13th in the nation in fewest tackles for loss. All five starters are expected to be back around All-Pac-12 center Nathan Eldridge and Second Team All-Pac-12 left tackle Joshua Gray.

Tristan Gebbia led the team with 824 passing yards and three touchdowns with three picks in just four games before suffering a hamstring injury. It’s still his gig to lose, but he doesn’t add anything to the ground game and he’s going to have to battle to hold off a few other options.

Chance Nolan stepped in and threw a team-high six touchdown passes and can run a bit, but on the way is Sam Noyer – Colorado’s starting quarterback and leading passer last season. The Second Team All-Pac-12 performer has got the experience, the running ability, and the 6-4, 220-pound size to make a big push.

Leading receiver Trevon Bradford returns after catching 24 passes for 239 yards and a score, but they grabs didn’t really go anywhere – he averaged under ten yards per catch.

TE Teagan Quitoriano is a good receiver, and junior Tyjon Lindsey – the top deep threat – and second-year freshman Zeriah Beason are back after tying for the team lead with three touchdown passes.

Oregon State Football Schedule Analysis: The Beavers need to learn how to do this whole non-conference thing – the easy games are supposed to be first to use as a warm-up.

They start at Purdue, then get Hawaii, then Idaho, but the date against the Vandals can be used as a break before starting the Pac-12 season at USC.

It’s a brutal conference slate – missing Arizona and UCLA from the South hurts – with four road games in the first six with the home dates against Washington and Utah not sweetening the deal. To make matters even worse, the Oregon game is in Eugene.

Pac-12 Conference Teams Missed: Arizona, UCLA

Notre Dame Football: Irish shut out from AP Preseason All-American Team

The AP announced their preseason All-American teams on Tuesday. See who made the first and second teams since no Notre Dame players did.

In a busy week for the Associated Press before college football kicks off in a few short weeks, the Preseason All-American Team was announced on Tuesday with no Notre Dame players being named to the squad.

The team is composed of players from teams who will both be playing and not being playing this fall.

11 players on the AP’s first-team and an additional 12 on the second team won’t see action this season which speaks to the volume of talent that won’t be viewed on college football fields this fall.

Will Colorado State be ready for this Oregon State team?

The Colorado State Rams head to Corvallis in week two of the 2020 season to take on the Oregon State Beavers. Head coach Steve Addazio will look to set the tone for the 2020 season in the second straight Pac-12 match up for the Rams. The game is currently scheduled to take place Saturday, September 12th. No time or TV schedule has been set yet.

Location: Corvallis, OR

Mascot: Beavers

Conference: Pac-12

2019 Record: 5–7 (4-5 SEC)

Head Coach: Jonathan Smith (Overall 7-17) is heading into his third season as the Beavers head coach. Smith is coaching at his alma mater. He was a QB for the Beavers from 1998-2001. Smith earned MVP honors of the Fiesta Bowl in 2000; a season in which the Beavers finished fourth in the rankings.

Smith improved his record at OSU from 2-10 in 2018 to 5-7 last year. This year the Beavers are expected to be in the mix for a middle of the table spot in the Pac-12 North as the predictions are a bit mixed for everyone after Oregon. The Beavers will be looking to stake their claim as a team to watch out for.

Series: This will be the teams fourth meeting (2-1 CSU). The Rams are on a two game winning streak and last time out the Rams opened up Canvas Stadium with an emphatic 58-27 victory in 2017.

2019 Oregon State Season Review:

The Beavers had an ok 2019 season. Outside of two ugly losses to Oklahoma State and Utah, Oregon State was in most of its games. Three of their seven losses were by a field goal or less. And the Beavers seemed to get better as the season went on.

The Beavers offense was lead by Jake Luton. The senior quarterback finished the season completing 62% of his passes for 2714 yards, 28 touchdowns, and three interceptions. His favorite targets were Isaiah Hodgins (86 receptions, 1171 yards, and 13 tds) and Noah Togiai (44 receptions, 406 yards, and three tds). The offense performed well and finished ranked 35th in the SP+.

Unfortunately the defense let this Oregon State team down. The defense finished ranked 93rd in SP+. The defense kept them in some games but didn’t show up when it mattered. Opponents converted 21 of 27 fourth down opportunities and converted 44% of their third down opportunities. Five teams were able to convert 50% or more their third down attempts against the Beavers in 2019.

Obviously, no one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Oregon State Beavers Offense 3 Things To Know

The Beaver offense had its moments. It scored 35 or more six times as the team came up with the most points since 2013. However, all three of the top skill guys are done.

QB Jake Luton is now a Jacksonville Jaguars, top receiver Isaiah Hodgins is a Buffalo Bill, and leading rusher Artavis Pierce is done. There are good replacement – there aren’t any issues with the skill parts.

The O line is a different story with three starters gone –  the loss of left tackle Blake Brandel is the biggest issue. The pass protection was fine, the running game was decent, and the line was good enough to get by. Now it’ll need some reworking.

Jermar Jefferson was the star of the 2018 offense, but the junior running back who tore off 1,380 yards and 12 scores the year before was held to 685 yards and eight scores. He was able to push past his ankle injury enough to run for over 100 yards three times. He’s back along with junior BJ Baylor and junior Calvin Tyler in a deep group.

Is Tristan Gebbia ready to take over the quarterback gig? He saw a little bit of time in four games, completing 63% of his passes for 347 yards and two scores with a pick. The former Nebraska Cornhusker will be in for a fight with five other options getting a shot.

Hodgins is gone along with No. 2 target Timmy Hernandez. Junior Champ Flemings was second on the team with 32 catches averaging over 14 yards per grab. Florida State transfer Tre’Shaun Harrison and Washington transfer Trey Lowe need to bring instant help.

Is Georgia football in the lead for 4-star TE Brock Bowers?

Georgia football appears to be trending for 4-star TE Brock Bowers.

Two weeks ago, Brock Bowers, a four-star tight end in the class of 2021, released his top eight schools.

From Napa, California, he included only one SEC school in his most recent cut, Georgia.

Bowers’ full list is Cal, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, UCLA and Washington.

At 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, Bowers is rated as the nation’s No. 2 tight end and No. 53 prospect overall.

Kirby Smart brought in Florida State graduate transfer Tre’ McKitty to help soften the blow of losing tight ends Charlie Woerner and Eli Wolf from last season’s squad. Georgia also signed 5-star tight end Darnell Washington in the 2020 class.

But looking ahead at the 2021 class, Georgia appears to be trending for Bowers. Per 247Sports’ Crystal Ball, Georgia is trending for Bowers, with all six of the votes going in favor of the Bulldogs.

Georgia offered Bowers back in September of 2019. He and his family took a trip to Athens in January for an unofficial visit.

From 247Sports’ scouting report on Bowers:

Boasts elite level athleticism, clocking a 4.5 40 as a sophomore and a 40-inch vertical. Has the speed to burn a linebacker and separate from a defensive back. Tracks the ball well, uses good body control and his hands to make his catches and routinely finds the soft spot in a defense. Plus blocker who can seal off the edge but used best as a pass-catcher. Projects as multi-year Power 5 starter and projects as second round pick.

Georgia football makes top-eight for nation’s No. 2 TE — Only SEC school on list

Georgia football is the only SEC school to make the top eight for the nation’s No. 2 tight end Brock Bowers from California.

On Sunday, Brock Bowers, a 4-star tight end in the class of 2021, released his top-eight schools.

Bowers hails from Napa, California and included only one SEC school in his most recent cut, The University of Georgia.

Bowers’ full list is as follows:

Cal, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, UCLA and Washington.

At 6-3 and 225 pounds, Bowers is rated as the nation’s No. 2 tight end and No. 52 prospect overall.
