Baylor vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

The Bears are great at getting on the offensive boards. Usually teams get lots to rebounds on the offensive glass because they miss, but the Bears are doing just fine from the field, too.

They just have to be consistent.

Oklahoma State doesn’t do anything from the outside, and it’s having consistency problems inside, too.

It’s not getting to the free throw line on a regular basis, it doesn’t take or make enough threes. There are times when the Cowboys go through painful lulls when the shots just aren’t falling inside or out.

The Bears are still rebounding just fine – but not quite the same – without Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua, the backcourt is able to force enough mistakes to matter, and the ball movement continues to be among the best in the Big 12.

However …

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys were able to get Baylor on the road the first time around, and now they get the game in Stillwater.

It was a stunning end to a rough 2-6 run, hitting close to 45% from the field and doing a great job defensively in the 61-54 win. That wasn’t just a rare loss for Baylor, it was a rare road win for Oklahoma State.

The team is far better in Gallagher-Iba, but beyond that, it needs to simply be better from the field.

It’s been struggling way too much to get past 45% – forget about the shooting from three – but the defense has been solid, there are a whole lot of blocked shots and steals, and the team should be able to match what Baylor brings with its aggressive backcourt. And …

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor will run out of gas on the road.

It’ll be good at getting on the move and the defense will keep Oklahoma State from doing anything great, but again, this is a different Cowboy team when it’s not away from home.

It’s not going to be anything pretty, but at this point in a rough year, Oklahoma State will happily take the tough victory.

Kansas vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys aren’t playing all that bad lately.

They came up with a strong performance in a win over Oklahoma and destroyed West Virginia a few days ago. Yeah, they’re losing way too much, but again, they’re not all that awful.

They’re shooting well, they’re strong defensively at coming up with big plays – lots of steals and lots of blocks – and they’re getting to the free throw line.

Kansas might be fantastic, but it’s beatable with a hot shooting game.

Oklahoma State has to move the ball around better than it did in the first meeting – 74-63 loss back in early January – and it has to get to the rim. Kansas is 2-3 against teams that hit 50% or better from the field, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Kansas Will Win

That’s one heavy lift for Oklahoma State.

It’s not a bad shooting team overall, and it can generate a few points in transition, but it’s not a high-powered offensive power and it only hit 50% or better from the field three times.

The Cowboys don’t do much of anything from the outside, and for all the big defensive plays they make, they turn the ball over way, way too much.

Kansas won the first time around with relative ease even though it wasn’t its normal self from the field. It’s one of the best shooting teams in the country both inside and out, and it should be able to blow past the Cowboys – as basic as this sounds – by hitting more shots.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky is the only team to get Kansas in Allen Field house, and that only happened before it dominated on the boards and was dominant from the field.

Be shocked if the Jayhawks aren’t far sharper this time around against Oklahoma State, and be shocked if they aren’t at least a +10 in rebounding margin.

Iowa State vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

So how does Iowa State pull up from its nosedive?

The threes have to start falling.

They’re not getting a lick of luck lately from the outside, they’re not getting to the free throw line, and they’re struggling to come up with enough easy points off of turnovers to make up for the problems on the outside.

Oklahoma State doesn’t make its free throws on a consistent enough basis, it’s the worst team in the Big 12 from three, and it’s awful on the free throw line.

However …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State’s defense makes up for the offense.

It generates a whole lot of mistakes and makes plays on the move, the D generates a ton of blocks, and the aggressive style comes through on the offensive boards with enough second chance points to matter.

How bad has Iowa State been from the outside? Against the solid Texas Tech and TCU defenses it hit 8-of-52 from three and is way too inconsistent overall.

The Oklahoma State pressure should be enough to keep that going. Big 12 opponents are hitting way under 40% from three.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State just isn’t showing well enough, and Oklahoma State isn’t the team to go against if you’re struggling from the field.

The Cowboys might not be winning a ton, but the D has been good through the rough 4-7 run.

There won’t be anything pretty about this game, but it’ll be a tight throughout and close late. Oklahoma State will get the late defensive stop to survive.

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 79-75 loss against Oklahoma State in Stillwater

Three immediate takeaways from Oklahoma’s 79-75 loss to Oklahoma State on Monday night in Stillwater.

No. 16 Oklahoma had a quick turnaround after Saturday’s loss to rival Oklahoma State as they got back to the floor to see those same Cowboys again just over 48 hours later.

The first matchup was an overtime epic that will be remembered for a very long time, and while the rematch wasn’t quite to that level – it certainly was another thriller that provided plenty of drama.

While the Sooners did some really good things, and limited Cade Cunningham far better than the first game, it was still not enough with the Cowboys winning in Stillwater to sweep the season series.

The loss is Oklahoma’s third in a row and pins them at 14-8 on the season and looking for answers. Here are three immediate takeaways from the game:

Hello, Brady Manek

Brady Manek has had a disappointing year, there really isn’t any way around it. He has had flashes of the guy we are used to seeing in recent years, but for the most part that consistent three-point shot has really alluded him and kept him from having the impact he is capable of having.

Monday provided some shades of the Manek of old as he came out firing from deep and was simply huge for the Sooners in this game. His first half was especially vital as really the only consistent scoring option through the first 20 minutes of action.

He kept things rolling through the second half as well finishing things with 20 points on the evening, although did miss a key shot late that would have tied the game.

If Manek can build on this and play his best ball in the most important games the rest of the way, that is a gigantic plus for Lon Kruger’s squad.

When, where, how to watch Oklahoma basketball take on Oklahoma State

Everything you need to know before Oklahoma takes on Oklahoma State Monday night in Stillwater.

The Oklahoma Sooners (14-7, 9-6) are set to get right back to action on Monday night against Bedlam rival Oklahoma State (16-6, 9-6) in a rematch of their overtime epic on Saturday afternoon in Norman.

It doesn’t happen often in college basketball that two teams face one another in back-to-back games, let alone in-state rivals at a pivotal point in the season. If the Sooners want to find a way to make up for their loss in the first meeting, they will have to find a way to slow down Cowboys’ star Cade Cunningham.

On Saturday, Cunningham exploded for 40 points and was seemingly unstoppable down the home stretch of regulation and in the overtime period. Without much time to to find a way to keep him at bay, Lon Kruger and company will need to do just that this time around to try and get the road win.

What has been an incredible season for Oklahoma has hit its biggest rough patch at a pivotal time in the final days of the regular season. The Sooners have just two more games, including this one, to get things back on track before the Big 12 Tournament and selection Sunday.

For what is quite possibly the biggest game of Oklahoma’s season, here is everything you need to know:

Postgame wrap-up and quotes from Oklahoma’s 94-90 overtime loss to Oklahoma State in Norman

Postgame wrap-up from Oklahoma’s 94-90 overtime loss to Oklahoma State featuring postgame quotes from Lon Kruger and De’Vion Harmon.

The No. 7 Oklahoma Sooners were back at the Lloyd Noble Center for the first time in three weeks on Saturday as they welcomed in Bedlam rival Oklahoma State to Norman. The game will likely be remembered for some time as a classic in this rivalry, but with the Sooners on the losing end of things 94-90 in an overtime thriller.

“Heck of a ballgame, I thought,” head coach Lon Kruger said after the game. “Big time battle for 45 minutes, I guess. I thought guys on both teams competed like crazy, worked hard. We just couldn’t quite get it back over the hump. Again, it was a good battle. It was what games like that are supposed to be.”

The story of the game will easily be looked at as the historic outing of Cowboys’ freshman Cade Cunningham who exploded for 40 points and was absolutely dominant down the stretch and in the overtime period of his first Bedlam game. The future NBA lottery pick was unstoppable late and was an obvious huge piece to the road upset for Oklahoma State.

“He was terrific, obviously with a stat line like that.” Kruger said of Cunningham. “I thought our guys made him work for them (the 40 points). To his credit, I thought he made some big time shots, made some tough shots. Good players are capable of doing that, and he did.”

Oklahoma attempted to match Cunningham’s offensive heroics with the reliable duo of Austin Reaves and De’Vion Harmon who both turned in solid performances of their own on Saturday afternoon. Harmon was especially good, scoring an efficient 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting.

“I thought he was terrific, I thought he did a really good job,” Kruger said of Harmon. “He made shots, he got downhill, defensively he was good. De’Vion has had a lot of good ballgames for us and I thought he had a very good one tonight.”

“I just want to win,” Harmon said postgame. “And we didn’t do that. Yeah, I played a really good game but we didn’t win. And W’s are all that matter.”

The unique aspect, of course, of this year’s Bedlam series is the fact that these two teams will get the opportunity to run it back against each other just over 48 hours from now in Stillwater after that game was postponed back from earlier in the season. This gives the Sooners a great chance to wipe away this tough loss quickly and get things back on track.

“Of course we love it,” Harmon said about getting the chance to play the Cowboys again just two days later. “I know I love it. I’m a big time competitor, I want to compete. I know my teammates love it. Like I said, we’re going to be ready.

We just got to find a way to win, that’s all that matters.”

It is still likely too early to declare this is as a late season tailspin for the Sooners, but it certainly has to be somewhat concerning to drop two consecutive games as a favorite. The team will have two more big games in the coming week to try and get things back on track heading into the Big 12 Tournament.

Quite arguably now the biggest game of Oklahoma’s season to date, Bedlam round two is set for Monday night in Stillwater at 8:00 p.m. CT.

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 94-90 overtime loss against Oklahoma State in Norman

Three immediate takeaways from Oklahoma’s 94-90 overtime loss against Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon in Norman.

No. 7 Oklahoma was back at the Lloyd Noble Center on Saturday for the first time in three weeks to host in-state rival Oklahoma State in the first of two consecutive matchups between the two over a three-day span.

It was a tremendous game that went back and forth all the way down to the wire, even needing five more minutes to decide a winner. But, in the end, Cade Cunningham and the Cowboys were the better team outlasting the Sooners 94-90.

De’Vion Harmon and Austin Reaves were both very solid for Lon Kruger’s group, scoring 23 and 22 points respectively and making several key plays down the stretch to keep the team hanging in despite Cunningham’s barrage of shot-making and incredible playmaking.

The loss dips Oklahoma to 14-7 on the year and looking for answers with not a lot of time to find them. Here are three immediate takeaways to this Bedlam classic in Norman:

Couldn’t stop Cade Cunningham

An obvious big story coming into the game was how Oklahoma planned to deal with potential future No. 1 overall NBA draft pick Cade Cunningham. At first, the Sooners elected to start Jalen Hill in place of Elijah Harkless, which didn’t exactly go well with the Cowboys scoring 20 points in the first eight minutes and change with Cunningham settling in quickly.

Once Harkless entered the game, the defense for Oklahoma picked up significantly, with Cunningham slowing down and Oklahoma State generally not having it come nearly as easy on the offensive end. But, that would only last for so long.

Down the stretch and in the overtime period, Cunningham flat took over this game and showed everyone why the hype around him is so large. He was absolutely tremendous scoring 40 points that his team really needed to get the road upset.

It really feels like the game boiled down largely to the simple fact of the Sooners not having any answers for him late, and now they have just over 48 hours to figure out how to adjust to dealing with him again on Monday.

Bedlam basketball set for Saturday postponed due to COVID-19 issues at Oklahoma State

Saturday night’s Bedlam basketball game has been postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test at Oklahoma State.

The highly-anticipated first edition of Bedlam basketball in 2021 will have to wait a little bit longer.

Oklahoma’s game with Oklahoma State that was set for Saturday night in Stillwater has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Cowboys’ program.

https://twitter.com/jacobunruh/status/1350143906017648640?s=20

The Sooners previously had issues of their own earlier in the season that forced them to miss their first few games of the year, now they are on the other side of the coin. While the team surely wants to play and nobody wants anyone to have to deal with the virus, the game postponement does provide a small break to Oklahoma who was likely going to play this game once again without starter Brady Manek.

The Sooners now turn their attention to a home matchup with Kansas State next Tuesday night – potentially with Manek back in the starting lineup.

[vertical-gallery id=23042]

Oklahoma’s Jalen Hill will be back for Bedlam, Brady Manek still out

Oklahoma’s Jalen Hill will be returning to action for Saturday’s Bedlam matchup, but Brady Manek will still be inactive.

Oklahoma’s Brady Manek and Jalen Hill have both been out due to COVID-19 protocols the last two games against Kansas and TCU. A key starter and a key bench piece, Manek and Hill are two guys the Sooners have certainly been missing despite the team playing well in their absence.

Now, ahead of Bedlam on Saturday in Stillwater, head coach Lon Kruger said on Thursday that Hill would be making his return this weekend – but that Manek would still more than likely be out.

Oklahoma has employed a smaller lineup with Elijah Harkless in Manek’s starting spot since he has been on the shelf, and the expectation is that will remain the same for Saturday’s matchup with Oklahoma State. Hill, meanwhile, will be reintroduced to the fold and will provide a welcomed boost off the bench.

A good rebounder with the ability to put the ball in the basket, Hill coming back will be helpful to a team trying to get a tough road win. It is unclear at this time how much longer Manek will be out, but it will extend for at least another game.

What Oklahoma State’s punishment means for the rest of the Big 12

OSU’s basketball program was rocked on Friday, receiving their punishment for NCAA violations. Here is what it means for the Big 12’s season.

Oklahoma State’s basketball program was rocked by the NCAA on Friday, receiving their punishment for violations uncovered by an FBI investigation. A former associate head coach of the Cowboys accepted nearly $22,000 to influence recruits’ college decisions.

Here is the official punishment from the NCAA:

  • Three years of probation.
  • A 2020-21 postseason ban for the men’s basketball team.
  • A $10,000 fine plus 1% of the men’s basketball program budget (self-imposed by the university).
  • A reduction of men’s basketball scholarships by a total of three during the 2020-21 through 2022-23 academic years.

Going into the 2020-2021 season, Oklahoma State seemed as if they had a solid chance of making the NCAA Tournament under head coach Mike Boynton. Now, with a postseason ban, their absence from the postseason will extend to four consecutive years.

Most of the reason the Cowboys were pegged to have success was incoming freshman Cade Cunningham. A point guard from Arlington, Texas, Cunningham was the top overall recruit on 247Sports’ composite. He signed his national letter of intent with Oklahoma State in November 2019.

Now, the possibility of Cunningham leaving the program could be a strong one now that the Cowboys cannot compete in the NCAA Tournament. Jeff Goodman of Stadium reported Cunningham had an offer from the same NBA G-League team which was after Greg Brown. After initially denying the offer, Cunningham would re-explore his options.

Another school possibly in trouble with the NCAA is Kansas. Bill Self’s program was apart of the same FBI investigation as Oklahoma State, but are expected to have harsher penalties.

The Cowboys only committed one violation and still received a postseason ban. For the Jayhawks, they have committed five different violations. While nothing has been reported or announced by the NCAA, if staying consistent, Kansas’ probation and possible postseason ban could prove to be one of the worst the sport has ever seen.

So what does all of this mean for the Big 12 assuming Kansas’ possible punishments does not affect the 2020-2021 season?

As a whole, the conference was looking for a bounce-back season after a disappointing 2019-2020 campaign.

Baylor and Kansas were two of the top three teams in the country last season and were expected to be 1-seeds in the NCAA Tournament had it not be canceled due to the coronavirus.

Past those two squads, the rest of the conference was a fringe tournament team or out completely. Middle tier teams such as Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, and West Virginia were inconsistent throughout the year.

Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and TCU all finished with losing records in the Big 12.

Now, the top six of the conference seems as if they have a great shot of making the NCAA Tournament in 2020-2021.

Baylor and Kansas will remain loaded, with both teams expected to keep a majority of their starting lineup from last season.

Yes, the Jayhawks will lose both Devon Dotson and Udoka Azubuike, but they will be replaced with five-star point guard Bryce Thompson and big man David McCormick.

The middle tier of the conference is where the boost is really expected. West Virginia and Texas Tech are preseason top 25 once again but should be able to maintain the success throughout the year with Bob Huggins and Chris Beard at their respective schools.

Texas is also dubbed as a top 25 team going into the season, as Shaka Smart returns 100% of his production from last season, while also adding five-star recruit Greg Brown.

Despite losing first-team All-Big 12 Kristian Doolittle, all five of Oklahoma’s starters were apart of the program last season. Brady Manek can really shoot the ball, finishing fourth in three-pointers made last season in the Big 12.

Even without Oklahoma State, six Big 12 teams are still expected to make the NCAA Tournament in 2021. If Cunningham stays in the program, the Cowboys will still be a threat to steal wins away from tournament hopeful teams and possibly destroy resumes.

After a 2019-2020 season where there was a real chance only three teams made the NCAA Tournament, the Big 12 has the opportunity to establish itself as the top conference in the country in 2020-2021.
