Kansas vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys aren’t playing all that bad lately.

They came up with a strong performance in a win over Oklahoma and destroyed West Virginia a few days ago. Yeah, they’re losing way too much, but again, they’re not all that awful.

They’re shooting well, they’re strong defensively at coming up with big plays – lots of steals and lots of blocks – and they’re getting to the free throw line.

Kansas might be fantastic, but it’s beatable with a hot shooting game.

Oklahoma State has to move the ball around better than it did in the first meeting – 74-63 loss back in early January – and it has to get to the rim. Kansas is 2-3 against teams that hit 50% or better from the field, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Kansas Will Win

That’s one heavy lift for Oklahoma State.

It’s not a bad shooting team overall, and it can generate a few points in transition, but it’s not a high-powered offensive power and it only hit 50% or better from the field three times.

The Cowboys don’t do much of anything from the outside, and for all the big defensive plays they make, they turn the ball over way, way too much.

Kansas won the first time around with relative ease even though it wasn’t its normal self from the field. It’s one of the best shooting teams in the country both inside and out, and it should be able to blow past the Cowboys – as basic as this sounds – by hitting more shots.

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky is the only team to get Kansas in Allen Field house, and that only happened before it dominated on the boards and was dominant from the field.

Be shocked if the Jayhawks aren’t far sharper this time around against Oklahoma State, and be shocked if they aren’t at least a +10 in rebounding margin.

Kansas vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Can the Kansas offense that was so good and so sharp against Oklahoma – relatively speaking to Kansas – show up in Stillwater?

For all of the team’s problems, the O has had its moments with a big day against Duke, a 410-yard day against Coastal Carolina, and last week’s solid performance in the battle with the Sooners.

It was a terrifically-called day from the coaching staff, letting QB Jason Bean roll out in a rhythm and find his guys in space – easier said than done – as he completed a season-high 74% of his passes for 246 yards and a score, averaging close to 11 yards per throw.

The Jayhawk offense was great, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Kansas lost by 12.

That was about as perfect a game as Kansas could’ve played and it still lost by double-digits. The defense is still last in the nation in third down stops, it’s the third-worst in the nation in pass efficiency D, and now it has to deal with an Oklahoma State team that’s brilliant at maintaining control in game after game.

The Cowboys might not be all that explosive compared to past versions, but the goal is to not screw up, score when there’s a chance, and rely on the tremendous defense to dominate.

Great at getting into the backfield, tremendous on third downs, and allowing just 307 yards per game, the OSU defense should be able to lock down against the KU running attack and apply plenty of pressure on Bean.

What’s Going To Happen

Last week was fun, but Kansas is about to deal with a team that’s going to bring the energy and focus from the start.

Oklahoma State’s defense will own the game – be surprised if the Jayhawks get to 75 rushing yards.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

After getting blasted the first two times against the Jayhawks, what can the Cowboys bring to change things up?

On a four-game winning streak, OSU has cranked up the defense, was able to  get past a rocky night from the outside to get by Iowa State in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament, and it survived in a 72-71 win.

The D is only allowing 66 points per game doing a great job at holding down teams from three. It should be able to keep Kansas from bombing away from the outside, and it’s decent enough at forcing takeaways to generate a few easy points.

Kansas isn’t great from the outside, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Kansas Will Win

Good luck locking down the Kansas inside presence.

It’s ninth in the nation from the field even though it doesn’t do too much from three. Having a dominant force in Udoka Azubuike helps, but every main part on this O can shoot.

The D does its part, too, doing a great job of locking down most teams from the outside while leading the Big 12 on overall defense. Oklahoma State’s only chance is to be red hot from three, but it wasn’t bad from the outside in the first two meetings and it was still blown out.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is going to come out and make a huge statement. It’s already playing like the no-brainer No. 1 team in the country, and it’s about to take out Oklahoma State with a big early run to take control. It won’t coast in the second half, but it won’t be threatened in the final five minutes.

Kansas (24-3) vs. Oklahoma State (14-13) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks are dominating from the field – it helps when Udoka Azubuike is hanging around the rim and making 11-of-13 like he did in the win over Baylor – with the O hitting 40% or better in every game this year but one.

That one game? Oklahoma State – and Kansas won 65-50 despite making 39% of its shots.

OSU can rebound, but it doesn’t score enough and it can’t hit well enough from the outside to stay alive if the Jayhawk inside scoring is working. The KU offense might be great, but the defense is what’s taking over, holding teams to just 61 points per game.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The defense is good enough to keep this from getting out of hand.

OSU would like to keep this a bit of a grind – it doesn’t shoot well enough or get enough easy points to keep up if KU gets going – doing a good enough job on the defensive boards to keep the Jayhawks from getting too many of the backbreaking offensive rebounds it needs to dominate.

Somehow make this a low-scoring battle deep into the second half, and turn this into a free throw contest. Kansas only hits 66% from the line.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas will be too good and too tough on the inside for the Cowboys.

It won’t be a total wipeout, but Oklahoma State just doesn’t shoot well enough, and now it’s going against an elite defense that’s been able to step it up a few notches.

Kansas (3-6) vs. Oklahoma State (6-3) Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Is this the week the offense starts to work again?

The Jayhawks have had two weeks off to get ready after getting popped by Kansas State, but before the 38-10 loss, the O rolled in the win over Texas Tech and in the 50-48 near-miss against Texas.

It starts with getting back QB Carter Stanley, who left the K-State game with an injury after throwing two picks. The time off was enough to get him close to right again, and that means the passing game should go off.

He threw for 310 yards and four scores against Texas, and hit Texas Tech for 415 yards and three touchdowns. Now he and the Jayhawk offense get to bomb away against a porous Oklahoma State secondary.

The Cowboys give up over 275 yards per game and can get hammered by the big plays. Baylor and Texas each went off, and now – assuming Stanley’s knee really is 100% – it’s about to get hit for 300 yards. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

It’s not like the Kansas defense is stopping anyone.

The Jayhawk defensive front is getting hammered by everyone’s running game. West Virginia is the only team in the last seven games to not hit the 200-yard mark, and it ran for 192 yards and three scores.

Last week? Kansas State got 342 yards and five scores, with QB Skylar Thompson running for 127 yards and the running backs combining to crank out yards at will.

Oklahoma State will get its big day from Chuba Hubbard.

The nation’s leading rusher keeps on ripping off massive days, getting over the 1,600 yard mark with a 223-yard, two-touchdown day two weeks ago against TCU. Just 396 yards away from a 2,000-yard season he’s a mortal lock to get lop off at least 200 of that this week.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

With star receiver Tylan Wallace out for the year, the Oklahoma State offense will keep on going, but the passing game won’t be quite as dangerous. That’s where Hubbard comes in.

If you want to think really crazy … he’s just good enough and dangerous enough to flirt with hitting the 400-yard mark against this D.

No, he’s not going to do that, but the Cowboys will run wild, the Jayhawks will throw at will, and these two are about to put on one of the best shows of the weekend.

OSU will have just enough offense to survive at home, but it’s going to be in for a four quarter fight.
