Iowa State vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

The defense continues to be fantastic, and it’s by a mile.

Iowa State leads the Big 12 in total defense allowing just 284 yards per game – Baylor is No. 2 allowing 355.

Oklahoma State is dead last allowing 466 yards per game – 182 more than Iowa State and 30 more than the second-worst D. That’s been fine, but the offense that was able to overcome the problems went in the tank.

The O got shut out in a strange loss to Kansas State, and couldn’t get going until it was way too late in the 37-16 loss to Kansas last week.

The Iowa State defense isn’t what you want to face when everything is struggling. However …

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Turnovers have been among the biggest issues lately with nine in the last three games. For all of the great things the Iowa State defense does, it doesn’t force takeaways with just five in the last games.

No, the offense isn’t working in a puzzling power outage, but if the Cowboys can get anything going, Iowa State can’t keep up.

The Cyclone offense worked fine against West Virginia, and it should be able to put up 400 yards on the Cowboy D, but the pop isn’t there.

Oklahoma State might not do enough on defense, but it’s great on third downs and it’s able to get into the backfield and come up with big stops. If it can just get off the field and not let Iowa State dictate the tempo, everything should be fine. But …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Oklahoma State offense has to work.

The team is 5-0 at home, but Texas is the only team it faced that’s likely to go bowling. It’s 1-3 on the road, and that appears to be a big deal for the offense, too.

The five best Oklahoma State yardage days this year came at home, the four worst were on the road. Iowa State’s defense is good enough to hold up and hang around, but being back in Stillwater will help.

There won’t be four turnovers like there were against Kansas last week.

Iowa State vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

So how does Iowa State pull up from its nosedive?

The threes have to start falling.

They’re not getting a lick of luck lately from the outside, they’re not getting to the free throw line, and they’re struggling to come up with enough easy points off of turnovers to make up for the problems on the outside.

Oklahoma State doesn’t make its free throws on a consistent enough basis, it’s the worst team in the Big 12 from three, and it’s awful on the free throw line.

However …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State’s defense makes up for the offense.

It generates a whole lot of mistakes and makes plays on the move, the D generates a ton of blocks, and the aggressive style comes through on the offensive boards with enough second chance points to matter.

How bad has Iowa State been from the outside? Against the solid Texas Tech and TCU defenses it hit 8-of-52 from three and is way too inconsistent overall.

The Oklahoma State pressure should be enough to keep that going. Big 12 opponents are hitting way under 40% from three.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State just isn’t showing well enough, and Oklahoma State isn’t the team to go against if you’re struggling from the field.

The Cowboys might not be winning a ton, but the D has been good through the rough 4-7 run.

There won’t be anything pretty about this game, but it’ll be a tight throughout and close late. Oklahoma State will get the late defensive stop to survive.

Why Iowa State-Oklahoma State is the biggest Big 12 game of the week for Texas’ title hopes

Something to watch for during the bye week.

Texas is on a bye this week, turning everybody’s eyes to the rest of the Big 12. Baylor is off as well, with the other eight teams set to square off on Saturday.

Iowa State’s home matchup against Oklahoma State is the most eye-popping of the four games, having major conference championship implications. Not just for the Cowboys and Cyclones, but Steve Sarkisian’s squad as well.

Before talking about Texas in the Big 12 championship, let’s recognize there are plenty of problems to fix in Austin. The last two weeks have been total breakdowns in the second half, throwing away golden opportunities. Sarkisian and his staff have to play nearly flawless football over the next five games to even have a chance of traveling to Arlington.

But we can still have some fun, right? In this scenario let’s (generously) assume Texas wins out.

In order to appear in the Big 12 championship, one of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State is going to have to lose three games. Having the head-to-head tiebreaker, only dropping two does nobody in Austin any good.

And if we’re being honest, the Sooners are winning out. Caleb Williams has transformed the offense, revitalizing the Lincoln Riley offensive powerhouse. Playing Baylor in Waco presents the best shot of Oklahoma losing but dropping two others seems unfathomable.

Oklahoma State is Texas’ best shot.

Ames, IA presents the first opportunity for a loss to be added to the Cowboys’ record. Iowa State is favored by over a touchdown according to Tipico Sportbook coming off two straight wins over the Kansas schools.

It’s a battle of the Big 12’s biggest overachieving team vs the Big 12’s biggest underachieving team. The talent is still there for Iowa State to make a deep run in the conference as well. A win against Oklahoma State could start their own championship run.

Since we’re playing the game, let’s count down a win for ISU.

From there, two more losses are needed. Here is how the remaining schedule would look for Oklahoma State.

  • Kansas
  • at West Virginia
  • TCU
  • at Texas Tech
  • Oklahoma

Bedlam being Bedlam, Oklahoma will win there. I’m sorry Oklahoma State fans, we all know how that story goes. So there’s one. We’ll add Kansas to the ‘no duh’ win section as well.

That leaves at West Virginia (0-3 Big 12), TCU (1-2), and at Texas Tech (2-2) to save the Longhorns’ season. The last of the three may present the best chance, with a close eye on TCU. If we’re being honest, it’s not the craziest thing to ever happen in the world.

Sarkisian said after the Red River Shootout loss his team wanted another shot at playing Oklahoma. Despite failing to back up his message a week later, hope is still there. Three losses, by the currently ranked No. 8 team in the country, are required.

Of course, everything written above comes irrelevant if Oklahoma State wins on Saturday. Iowa State getting a win is critical toward Texas’ Big 12 championship hopes. Otherwise, we may be getting back-to-back weeks of Bedlam. Once in Norman, another in Arlington.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys will host the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday afternoon from Boone Pickens Stadium.

Iowa State is coming into this game with a 3-1 record on the season, only losing to Louisiana in their first game while Oklahoma State is 3-0 and on a  two-game winning streak, picking up wins over Tulsa and West Virginia.

Prediction: Oklahoma State has been playing well but this will be their toughest test yet against Iowa State.  In these types of games, I’m more likely to take the points with Iowa State in this one.  The Cyclones have put up over 31 points in their last three. Take the over and the Cyclones.

Why Iowa State Will Win

The offense has found its balance – but better.

It was well-balanced in the opener against Louisiana, but it wasn’t able to hit the 160-yard mark on the ground or through the air in the loss.

However, the offense hit 200 yards in both rushing and receiving against both TCU and Texas Tech, bombed away on Oklahoma, and had just enough of a running game to get by the Sooners.

The Cyclones are getting a good season so far out of the offensive line, Brock Purdy has hit 74% of his passes in two of the last three games, and on the other side, the run defense has been a rock. No one has been able to get to 120 yards on the ground so far – stop the run, stop Oklahoma State.

But …

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Oklahoma State rushing attack leads the Big 12, but it has the benefit of the 295-yard day against the Kansas free-space in the mix. Even so, the Cowboys can run.

Best of all, with the easy win a few weeks ago, and with all of the time off, QB Spencer Sanders has had time to heal his injured ankle. At the very least, he’ll be a part of a rotation for an O that should be able to hit the Cyclones in a variety of ways.

Sanders was good in last year’s win over the Cyclones – 249 passing yards, two scores, lots of big plays – and now he gets to step into a tuned up team whose defense has allowed just 27 points in three games.

Oklahoma State leads the nation in third down defensive stops – teams are only converting 17% of their chances – and the team appears ready to bust out with the time off.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Is this for a spot in the Big 12 Championship?

Iowa State still has to play Texas, but win this, and it’s going to be an odds-on favorite to get in. But Oklahoma State will pitch a gem.

No, the Cowboys haven’t played up to its overall talent level yet – including the layup over Kansas – and it’s about to get hit hard in the secondary by Brock Purdy and the Cyclone passing game, but it starts now.

This is when Oklahoma State starts to really look like the team everyone liked so much this offseason.

Iowa State (12-19) vs. Oklahoma State (17-14) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

What’s Going To Happen

The two split the regular season matchups with Iowa State winning 89-82 at home back in January and Oklahoma State taking the 73-61 game a few weeks ago.

The Cyclones are struggling, coming in losing five of the last six games and ten of the last 12 since beating the Cowboys. They can shoot, and they can move the ball around, but they can’t stop anyone from the outside and the offense hasn’t been able to keep up in blowout loss after blowout loss.

On the flip side, Oklahoma State has played well over the last few weeks. The defense has been solid, it’s great at stopping teams from getting into a groove from the outside, and the scoring punch has been just enough to pull away against the weaker teams.

The Cowboys will come up with their second double-digit win over Iowa State in the last five games.
