Former Georgia football star Nick Chubb ranked among current NFL stars

Georgia football has had a knack for brewing NFL greats.

Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently released a list containing the top-50 current NFL Players and the Bulldogs are represented once again by former UGA great Nick Chubb.

The Cleveland Browns running back is rated as the No. 37 player in the league. Chubb also made the list last year, coming in at No. 27.

Chubb missed four games last season but was still able to finish with a great year. The Cedartown, Ga., native racked up1,067 yards on 190 carries (5.6 avg.) and 12 touchdowns, while adding 16 catches for 150 yards.

ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes thinks Chubb is already the league’s top running back.

Since the Browns drafted Chubb with the No. 35 overall pick in 2018, Chubb has been the league’s most efficient runner. PFF has graded Chubb as the top runner in the NFL over the last three seasons. In 2020, he finished second in the league in rushing while ranking second in broken tackles (66).

This all after a 2019 season where Chubb exploded for 1,494 yards on the ground, second only to Titans star Derick Henry.

Chubb’s NFL success is no surprise to DawgNation, who watched the young star develop into one of the best running backs in Georgia history. And at ‘RBU’, we don’t take that lightly.

Chubb took over for an injured Todd Gurley as a freshman and went off for 1,547 yards and 14 touchdowns.

After a serious knee injury in his sophomore season, Chubb returned the following year and bounced back for 1,130 yards and eight touchdowns.

Then, in his senior season, Chubb rushed for 1,345 yards and 15 touchdowns, became Georgia football’s second all-time leading rusher and helped lead the Bulldogs to a national championship appearance.

UGA great Nick Chubb helps Cleveland Browns to first playoff win since 1995

UGA great Nick Chubb helped the Cleveland Browns to their first playoff win since 1995 in a win over the Steelers on Sunday night.

The Cleveland Browns secured their first playoff win since 1995 in a 48-37 win versus the Steelers in Pittsburg in a wild-card matchup on Sunday night.

One reason for the Browns historical performance was a big night from former Georgia running back Nick Chubb.

Georgia football’s second all-time leading rusher carried the ball 18 times for 76 yards and caught 4 passes for 69 yards and this game-sealing touchdown.

A historical week for the Browns who, after making the Playoffs for the first time in 20 years just a week ago, were forced to face the Steelers without head coach Kevin Stefanski, tight ends coach Drew Petzing, defensive backs coach Jeff Howard, offensive guard Joel Bitonio, wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge and cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Kevin Johnson due to positive COVID-19 testing.

However, the Browns COVID-19 scares did not translate over to gameplay and especially not to Chubb and his ability.

Chubb still ran for over 1,000 yards during the regular season while missing four and a half games due to a knee injury and with his performance on Sunday night, the Cedartown, Ga., native has entered his name into the Browns history books.

I wonder if the 27 NFL teams that passed on Chubb in the 2018 NFL Draft ever wish they had done things differently.

I sat down with 2021 UGA signee Kamari Lassiter in the latest episode of UGA Football Live with J.C. Shelton! We talk about his recruitment and future as a Dawg. Listen here:

UGA great Nick Chubb is dominating NFL defenses

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb is one of the greatest runners in Georgia history and now he is dominating the NFL.

Georgia’s second all-time leading rusher, now Cleveland Brown Nick Chubb is one of the most beloved running backs in UGA history, which is saying something.

‘RBU’ has produced some of the greatest runners in football history, including guys who went on to dominate beyond the college level.

Herschel Walker, Garrison Hearst, Terrell Davis, Knowshon Moreno and Todd Gurley are just some of the Bulldogs who made a name in the NFL beyond their time in Athens.

It’s time to add Chubb to the list.

The Cedartown, Georgia native has averaged 128 yards per game since returning from an MCL sprain four weeks ago, including an astonishing 6.7 yards per carry.

In the Browns win vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday, Chubb ran 19 times for 144 yards and this touchdown.

On the year, Chubb has totaled 115 carries for 719 yards and six touchdowns.

Chubb has built himself into one of the best runners in the NFL, so it’s safe to say the Browns didn’t miss with the second round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Just think back to 2016 at UGA when Chubb suffered a devastating knee injury vs. Tennessee. He has truly come back better than ever and I am loving every bit of it.

Former Georgia Bulldog Nick Chubb has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head/neck area in training camp. The Cleveland Browns running back finished second in the NFL in rushing yards (1,494) last season behind Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry.

The former UGA standout has played in every game throughout his two year NFL career. Cleveland will miss him should he miss any game action. Hopefully, Chubb can heal up soon and get ready for the start of the NFL season.

The Cleveland Browns open their season against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13. Kareem Hunt will assume the starting role in the Cleveland backfield until Chubb returns. Chubb must go through the various steps of the protocol before he’ll be able to fully return to practice and eventually able to play in a game.

Chubb is a key fixture in Cleveland’s offense. The Browns will look to improve upon their 6-10 record from last season.

We will provide updates on the status of Chubb’s recovery. His injury could open the door for Cleveland to bring back former Georgia Bulldog Brian Herrien. The Browns previously cut Herrien this offseason.

Checking in on Nick Chubb’s cousin, Harlem Diamond – a rising Cedartown star

An interview with former Georgia football RB Nick Chubb’s first cousin Harlem Diamond, who is a rising star at Cedartown High School.

Nick Chubb will be a household name with Georgia Bulldog football fans for the rest of eternity.

The former Bulldog great trails just one other running back in the all-time Georgia rushing rankings, and that man is Herschel Walker. Chubb is second in yards (4,769) and touchdowns (44) in the school’s history.

The kid out of Cedartown, Georgia blew away expectations, helping the Dawgs win an SEC Championship and a Rose Bowl and becoming one of the greatest Georgia Bulldogs of all time.

Chubb, who currently plays for the Cleveland Browns, is now the highest graded PFF running back in the NFL, but the family’s football blood doesn’t stop with Nick.

Chubb’s first cousin Harlem Diamond is a rising sophomore at Cedartown High School in Chubb’s hometown, where he is a three sport athlete.

“I play football, basketball and baseball.  I started playing football at the age of 5.” Harlem told me in a phone interview.

I asked Harlem which sport was his favorite and the answer was clear.

“Football. I love football, it’s not an easy sport, you really have to work hard at it. Not anyone can play football. You have to be tough and may be a little crazy.”

Harlem is a two-way player, playing running back just like his cousin, in addition to playing defensive back. Apparently ball carrying style and his work ethic resemble that of his role model’s.

“Nick Chubb is my role model, he is a great person.” Harlem said. “I look up to him. He works hard in the weight room and is very humble, so I try to copy his work ethic… My vision at running back is something I have heard (that mimics Nick’s game). I would say just bringing a winning attitude to the game overall.”

And just like Nick, Harlem is not to be messed with in the weight room. At 15 years old, standing at 5-foot-6, 145 pounds, Harlem is benching 205, power cleaning 200 and squatting 305 pounds. Those are some legit numbers for a rising sophomore in high school.

Harlem’s performance in the classroom is also something not to be overlooked, as he currently has a 3.7 GPA.

I spoke with Harlem about his expectations for next year as well as his personal goals for the season.

“I’m just ready to prove myself. Our team’s mindset is to play hard every game, win regions and go to states. The goal I have set is to work hard, encourage my teammates and rush for 1,000 yards or have 100 tackles.”

Harlem has had incredible support from his family his entire life, with his father being the ultimate sports dad. Harlem’s father, James, is the all-time tackle leader at Cedartown High.

“Just knowing that he is on my side is motivation.” Harlem said.  “He believes in me regardless of the sport.  He was the defensive player of the year in high school in 1999 and holds the tackle record at Cedartown High School so I listen when he talks. He just wants to see me be successful in life, on or off the field. I have great support from my entire family.”

Harlem reminisced on his favorite memory with his cousin.

“I was at a football all-star game in Athens and Nick came over to the dorms, picked me up and gave me a private tour of the UGA facilities during the All-Star week.”

Harlem is just as good a baseball player as he is a football player, but you can just refer to him as the Bass Master from now on.

“I love to fish.  I consider myself a Bass Master, my biggest bass weighed 8.5 pounds.”

From the looks of it, the two have an unbreakable bond through family and football.  Harlem is now trying to make a name for himself in the football world and hopes to get recruited by a top program soon, as it is still early in the recruiting process for him.

Dawgs fans would love the idea of having Nick Chubb’s cousin Harlem taking over as the next great Georgia running back, and we hope that becomes a reality.

Top NFL players under 25: One Bulldog makes the cut, but way too low

One Georgia football player, Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns, made Bleacher Report’s rankings of the top-25 under the age of 25.

This week, Bleacher Report ranked the top-25 NFL players under the age of 25.

As expected, Georgia had one player on the list, however, he was ranked a bit lower than I would have had him.

Bleacher Report ranked former Georgia running back Nick Chubb, now with the Cleveland Browns, as the 20th best NFL player under the age of 25.

20th? No disrespect to Bleacher Report, I know they can’t possibly please everybody with a list like this, but Chubb finished second in the NFL in rushing last season. And I don’t care what changes Cleveland has made…he did it on the BROWNS.

Chubb, who dons the jersey #24 for the Browns, is also 24 years old.

On Chubb, BR wrote:

Among 25 running backs who have carried the ball 300-plus times since Nick Chubb came into the NFL in 2018, Chubb ranks first with 5.1 yards per attempt.

The 24-year-old 2018 second-round pick doesn’t get as much publicity as several star running backs yet to be named on this list, and his numbers related to fumbles and receiving could be better. But from a statistical standpoint, he’s right there with the top offensive weapons in the league.

Running backs ranked ahead of Chubb include:

No. 18: Dalvin Cook

No. 14: Ezekiel Elliott

No. 13: Saquon Barkley

No. 12: Alvin Kamara

No. 11: Christian McCaffrey

All those guys are great backs, but are we really going to sit here and say that Chubb, who I’ll remind you again finished No. 2 in rushing last season by only 46 yards, is the sixth best running back under the age of 25?

Yeah, I can’t get on board with that.

Georgia Bulldogs made some great plays in the NFL once again this week. With several NFL teams having bye weeks, there were fewer chances for Dawgs to make plays. Matthew Stafford was out for the first time in years, so one of the biggest play-makers from UGA didn’t suit up. Still, Jordan Jenkins, Nick Chubb, and Mecole Hardman had game-changing plays for their teams.

The New York Jets won against the Giants in a battle of New York teams. Former UGA linebacker Jordan Jenkins was a standout with two sacks:

Georgia’s Nick Chubb played excellent for the Browns. Many were concerned about the return of Kareem Hunt impacting Chubb’s role in the Cleveland offense, but Chubb managed to power his way to over one hundred yards rushing. Chubb carried Buffalo Bills defenders with him on his best run of the afternoon:

The best play of the week has to go to Mecole Hardman. Although it was in losing effort for the Chiefs, Hardman showed off his 4.3 speed on this insane touchdown:
