Jets, Adam Gase continue pattern of struggling after the opening drive

The Jets won but looked bad on offense after an impressive opening drive. This, sadly, has become a trend for Adam Gase’s Jets in 2019.

The Jets heralded Adam Gase as the offensive genius whose play-calling would elevate them from the drudges of the AFC when they hired him in January. But even in the Jets 16-10 win over the Steelers in Week 16, Gase proved once again he doesn’t know how to craft sustained drives after the first offensive series of the game.

After the Jets’ opening 11-play, 75-yard drive concluded with a beautiful touchdown pass to Robby Anderson from Sam Darnold, New York’s offense sputtered. The Jets averaged only 4.1 plays for 15.3 yards per drive through their next 12 possessions, which netted only nine points and one appearance in the red zone.

This continues a worrisome pattern for the Gase-led Jets. If you take a look at the six other games New York scored on its opening possession, the offense looked dynamic, powerful and dangerous on that first drive, averaging 10.8 plays for 74.8 yards with four touchdowns and two field goals. That’s the type of play-calling the Jets wanted from Gase. But after those first drives, the Jets’ offense looked much like it has throughout the season — horrid.

Let’s take a look at those six games:

Week 8 vs. Jaguars (loss)

Opening scoring drive: 11 plays, 98 yards

Average drive after first: 3.4 plays, 9.6 yards

Week 9 vs. Dolphins (loss)

Opening scoring drive: 11 plays, 80 yards

Average drive after first: 5.1 plays for 14.4 yards

Week 10 vs. Giants (win)

Opening scoring drive: 12 plays for 71 yards

Average drive after first: 4.2 plays for 11.6 yards

Week 11 vs. Redskins (win)

Opening scoring drive: seven plays for 70 yards

Average drive after first: 5.5 plays, 30 yards

Week 12 vs. Raiders (win)

Opening scoring drive: 10 plays, 79 yards

Average drive after first: 5.3 plays for 32 yards

Week 13 vs. Bengals (loss)

Opening scoring drive: 13 plays, 51 yards

Average drive after first: 6.8 plays, 22 yards

The pattern is obvious. Gase rarely, if ever, builds a drive better than his first one of the game. That makes sense from the perspective that coaches spend the entire week prior to crafting the perfect plays for their opening drive so they get points quickly.

This wouldn’t be a big deal if Gase’s Jets scored on every opening possession. The problem is, those six games plus the Steelers’ win were the only times they did. It took the Jets until Week 8 to score a point on their first possession, which at the time was the longest streak in the NFL.

Gase’s Jets have six wins after Week 16 – a miracle given the roster construction, injuries and play-calling by the coaching staff. But just because the Jets have won more games than anticipated shouldn’t take away from the fact Gase hasn’t been able to adjust his gameplan over the course of the contest. It’s a huge reason why the Jets ranked 28th in points, 31st in yards, 29th in plays and 32nd in yards per play heading into Week 16.

The win over the Steelers is nice, but in the grand scheme of things, it won’t matter for the Jets in 2019. Their season is over and they should be focused on the 2020 season – which means evaluating the current roster and correcting the mistakes that led to this disappointing season. This play-calling pattern is a huge problem that needs to be resolved this offseason if Gase is to succeed as the Jets coach.

Six wins look good on paper, but if New York doesn’t dive into the minutia of its games and fix the many problems it has (both from a personnel and coaching/play-calling standpoint), the same results could doom Gang Green in 2020 before the offseason even begins.

4 interesting stats from the Jets’ Week 16 win over Steelers

In Sunday’s win over the Steelers, the Jets hung onto an ugly one and took Pittsburgh’s playoffs fate out of its own hands.

It looks like the Steelers’ luck winning with backup quarterbacks has just about run out.

The Jets were able to knock off Pittsburgh 16-10  in a relatively ugly affair. The Steelers yanked their starting QB, Devlin Hodges, after he threw two interceptions in favor of Mason Rudolph. Rudolph then injured his left shoulder and Hodges was given a second chance, but he didn’t have enough to pull off a comeback.

Again, Gang Green’s offense couldn’t get in rhythm following its first drive of the game. Adam Gase’s offense played conservatively and was yet again unimaginative and stuck in time. However, New York’s defense pitched a second-half shutout thanks to standout performances from Marcus Maye and Quinnen Williams.

Let’s take a look at some interesting stats from New York’s sixth win of the season.

Robby Anderson’s late-season surge

On his 23-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter, Robby Anderson beat double coverage and had 0.57 yards of separation when the ball arrived in the back of the end zone according to ESPN’s Next Gen Stats.

Anderson continued to make a late-season push for a lucrative contract extension on Sunday. He caught two passes for 32 yards and a score in the Jets 16-10 win over the Steelers on Sunday. In his past five games, Anderson has caught 24 passes for 402 yards and three touchdown receptions.

Jets’ 2020 schedule locked in following win over Steelers

Next season, the Jets will host the Browns and travel to the Colts as their 2020 opponents were officially finalized.

With the Jets 16-10 upset victory over the Steelers on Sunday, their 2020 schedule is officially locked in.

Coming into Sunday’s matchup, everything was set in stone except two games for Gang Green. The AFC East will play the AFC and NFC West during the 2020 season. Also, the Jets will play six division games.

New York is scheduled to play the same division place-holder in the AFC North and South. With the Browns (6-9) losing to the Ravens on Sunday, they officially clinched a third-place finish. The Jets will host Cleveland for the second consecutive season at MetLife Stadium.

In the South, the Jets will travel to Indianapolis for the other game that was up in the air. The Colts (7-8) clinched a third-place finish, regardless of the results of next week’s division matchups.

With next year’s schedule set, the Jets will be playing five playoff teams in 2020. It’s not going to get easier for Adam Gase’s club next season, but a lot can change between now and opening day.

2020 NFL Draft: Bengals go first, which 12 teams follow?

The Bengals have the first pick in the NFL Draft. What teams are going to come next?

There will be no mystery about the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The top slot belongs to the Bengals. The scramble is on behind them.

13. Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons got big performances from Matt Ryan and Julio Jones in waltzing to a 12-point victory over hapless Jacksonville. Will be fascinating to see if Dan Quinn has saved his job.

Marcus Maye, Quinnen Williams among Jets’ Studs & Duds win over Steelers

The Jets did what they had to do to knock off the Steelers in an ugly 16-10 win at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Adam Gase told his team that if they were going to pull off an upset against the Steelers in Week 16, it would come in low-scoring fashion.

The Jets did just that, barely pulling out an ugly victory over Pittsburgh by a final score of 16-10. Nothing was pretty about the Jets’ win, but the defense stood on its head yet again though, intercepting Devlin Hodges twice.

The Jets’ gameplan was to not turn over the football. The team’s only turnover came right before halftime and led to the Steelers’ only touchdown of the game. Sam Darnold and the Jets offense were unspectacular, but they did just enough to get Le’Veon Bell and Hines Ward a victory against their former team.

Here are the best and worst players from the Jets’ latest win.

Stud: S Marcus Maye

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

While Marcus Maye has played an above-average center field position in the secondary for Gang Green, he’s been forced to play out of position and has subsequently struggled.

Fortunately for Maye, with Jamal Adams returning to the starting lineup, he was able to slide over to his natural position and made the Steelers pay. Maye’s interception of Devlin Hodges in the end zone was the final straw for Mike Tomlin, who yanked Hodges in favor of Mason Rudolph until an injury forced Rudolph out of action.

In addition to Maye’s third career interception, he added four tackles in the Jets 16-10 win over the Steelers. He also made a game-saving play in coverage, breaking up a game-winning touchdown catch from James Washington with less than a minute remaining in the game.

Instant analysis: Jets do just enough to upset Steelers

The Jets didn’t look great on offense or defense but both units were effective enough to pull off the 16-10 win over the Steelers.

It wasn’t pretty, but it worked.

The Jets didn’t look great on offense or defense, but both units were effective enough to pull off a16-10 upset win over the Steelers on Sunday.

Sam Darnold didn’t do much after a sensational opening drive capped off by a perfect touchdown pass to Robby Anderson but he put the Jets in multiple positions to kick field goals, which kept the Steelers at bay throughout the game. The defense, meanwhile, held off a Steelers offense that cycled between Devlin Hodges and Mason Rudolph at quarterback lost James Conner to injury.

Game Balls:

  • Jamal Adams: No sacks for the safety, but Adams finished with a game-high six solo tackles and eight combined on the day. He also had two tackles for a loss and played a huge role in limiting the Steelers to only 75 combined rushing yards. Adams hasn’t been as effective since his injury, but he remains the Jets’ best overall defender and the leader of the defense.
  • Sam Ficken: Ficken converted all four of his kick attempts (three field goals and one extra point). He also nailed a 54-yarder early in the second quarter. It will be very interesting to see what the Jets do with Ficken this offseason given the team’s recent kicker struggles.

Quick Thoughts:

    • Adam Gase is still struggling with orchestrating sustained drives after the Jets’ first series of either half. The Jets stormed down the field on an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to open the game and then couldn’t do anything the rest of the game. New York averaged 4.1 plays for 15.3 yards in their next 12 drives and only mustered nine points. Mid-game adjustments have plagued Gase throughout his tenure with the Jets and it continued against the Steelers.
    • Robby Anderson wants his money. The wide receiver made another ridiculous touchdown catch on a perfectly-placed ball by Darnold on the Jets’ opening drive in his attempt to prove to the Jets – or anyone that will pay him – that he’s worth a long-term contract. Anderson only finished the game with two receptions for 32 yards (his touchdown went for 23), but he now has a score in four of the past six games and should see a nice offer from someone this offseason. Whether it comes from the Jets remains to be seen.

  • Sam Darnold is still making some careless mistakes. He only had one turnover (a sack-fumble), but he almost threw another bad interception on a deep pass to Vyncint Smith. It was a miracle Joe Haden didn’t come down with the ball. Darnold only finished with 16 completions for 186 yards and the Jets failed to build many long drives. This has been a trend of both Darnold and the play-calling by Gase all season, and it needs to be corrected this summer.
  • New York’s defense employed a bend-but-don’t-break mentality when it came to facing the Steelers. Pittsburgh had a few nice drives that could have turned into more than just 10 points, but the Jets were able to thwart a couple of efforts. Devlin Hodges threw interceptions on his first two drives, including one to safety Marcus Maye in the end zone. Quinnen Williams also had a sack late in the game to knock the Steelers out of field goal range.  The defense played well enough to keep the Steelers off the scoreboard, though they did give up a big score to Dontae Johnson at the end of the half in an obvious Hail Mary situation for the Steelers.

Jets vs. Steelers inactives: Jamal Adams, Brian Poole return against Pittsburgh

Jets vs. Steelers inactives report for Week 16.

The Jets are finally getting healthy on defense.

Jamal Adams, Brian Poole, Arthur Maulet and Quinnen Williams are all returning for Gang Green against the Steelers in Week 16. Adams, Poole and Maulet have missed the Jets’ last two games, while Williams sat out in Week 15 after suffering a stinger against the Dolphins.

New York’s defense got thrashed by the Baltimore Ravens a week ago, but with three starters in the secondary back on the field and Williams back in the trenches, things just got a bit tougher for a Pittsburgh squad in need of a win to keep its playoff hopes alive.

While the Jets get healthy on defense, their offense continues to be plagued by injuries. Starting offensive lineman Tom Compton and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas are both inactive on Sunday, leaving New York with two gaping holes to fill.

The Jets will turn to either Conor McDermott or Brent Qvale on the line in place of Compton, while Vyncint Smith will see an increased role in Adam Gase’s wide receiver rotation. Josh Malone could also see some snaps at wideout after being promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster earlier this week.

As for the Steelers, they enter the week relatively healthy with arguably their best player returning. Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is back and will play for the first time in a month, giving quarterback Devlin Hodges a big-time weapon to work with.

Jets assistant Hines Ward wants win, Gatorade shower against former team

Sunday will mark the first time that former Steelers WR Hines Ward will face his former team, but it will be in an assistant coaching capacity

Sunday will mark the only time that former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward will root against his former team.

Now an assistant coach with the Jets, Ward would like to be celebrated in style if New York can knock off the Steelers on Sunday.

“It will be special for me, but I’m a competitive guy,” Ward said on Friday. “I want to win. I want to beat the Steelers as much as anybody in this building, trust me. I’m telling my guys, ‘You have to win this for me.’ I want the Gatorade shower and all that if we win.”

Ward became a legendary figure in Pittsburgh during his 14-year tenure with the Steelers. In 217 career games played between 1998-2011, Ward caught 1,000 passes for 12,083 yards and 85 touchdowns. He was a four-time Pro Bowl nominee, three-time second-team All-pro selection and also played an integral role in two Pittsburgh Super Bowls, winning MVP in a 21-10 over the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL.

“I’ll always bleed black and gold,” Ward told Jets team reporter Olivia Landis on Thursday. “I’ve done great things there during my football career. I won a couple of championships and the city of Pittsburgh has treated me so great, but I still want to beat those guys. I want to go out there and win and help our team pull out the W.

“It will be a little bittersweet. I’m thankful for the opportunity to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I’m also thankful for the Jets for giving me an opportunity to coach and to start my career in coaching. That will be the only time I root against Pittsburgh is when we play them, but hopefully, we can find a way to pull out the win.”

Ward began training camp with Gang Green as a coaching intern and has now become a permanent fixture on Adam Gase’s staff. Wide receivers like Robby Anderson and Jamison Crowder have thrived under Ward’s tutelage.

This is Ward’s championship and he hopes that it ends in a Gatorade bath. The black and gold pom poms will have to take a backseat as the Jets look to play spoiler in Pittsburgh’s quest for a wild card berth.

Jets vs. Steelers: Le’Veon Bell’s chance at revenge, Steelers defensive ascension among things to know

The Jets will need their star running back to ball out against one of the league’s best defenses in the Steelers.

While the Jets have nothing to play for except pride on Sunday, they still have a chance to put Pittsburgh’s playoff hopes on the self.

Jets running back Le’Veon Bell and offensive assistant Hines Ward will be squaring off against their former team for the first time. Bell has insisted that this is just another game, but Ward wants a Gatorade shower if the Jets are able to pull off the upset.

A win over the Steelers wouldn’t be the most surprising thing New York has pulled off this season. However, besides the injuries that continue to afflict Gang Green, the offensive ineptitude has plagued one of the league’s worst units. It might be more of the same against one of the league’s best defensive units on Sunday.

Here are four things you need to know for the Jets’ Week 16 clash with Pittsburgh.

Le’Veon Bell faces his former team

Le’Veon Bell will play his first career game against his former team on Sunday.

While Bell expects a 50/50 reception mixed with cheers and jeers, the Jets running back claims he won’t have any added motivation facing the Steelers.

“Each and every game I play I try to give it my all. I guess if I can find an extra squeeze in there, I’m going to try,” Bell said Friday. “It is what it is with me. I always try to go out there and give my best.”

Whether Bell believes that or not, he is having his worst statistical season to date. He has rushed for just 676 yards on 204 carries with three rushing touchdowns. He also has 57 catches for 404 yards and a score.

The Jets are going to need Bell to run rampant on Sunday to give themselves a fighting chance. A revenge game might not be in the cards for Bell, but he’ll certainly be looking to eclipse the season-best 87-yard rushing performance that he set last week.

Steelers fully healthy heading into crucial game vs Jets

After weeks of standing on the sidelines for games, one member of the Pittsburgh Steelers is itching to get back onto the field of play.

“I’m super excited,” Steelers wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster said, “just because I haven’t been playing for a while. And now that I’m back, to be around my boys, the coaches, players, and just to be myself.”

Smith-Schuster, as well as tight end Vance McDonald and cornerback Joe Haden all practiced fully Friday and none were listed on the Friday Injury Report.

Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges is hoping a full complement of weapons will aide an offense that is sorely lacking scoring punch. The Steelers have scored just one offensive touchdown in six of the last seven games.

It won’t be easy this week against a pretty good New York Jets defense.

“Facing a Gregg Williams defense is going to be challenging, especially when you have a young quarterback,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said. “Their ability to get after young quarterbacks has been a catalyst.”

This is the same team that sacked Giants rookie Daniel Jones and Redskins rookie Dwayne Haskins six times each in Weeks 10 and 11.

Speaking of sacks, the Steelers defense will be hungry to introduce themselves to jet’s QB Sam Darnold.

“He has all the talent that makes him a top draft pick,” Tomlin said of Darnold. “He has great mobility and arm strength and touch. He doesn’t panic under pressure. He has been a big challenge, watching the tape, in terms of the things that they do with him. They run him in the red zone. He has a couple rushing touchdowns. There are a lot of top-notch young quarterbacks in the league.”

Both T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree plan to be in Darnold’s face all day, but defensive coordinator Keith Butler would prefer they force Darnold to his left.

“He rarely gets fooled, in terms of holding the ball and stuff where he panics,” Butler said of Darnold. “You don’t see that a lot out of him. What we’ve got to try to do is get him in those situations best we can.

“When he scrambles and goes to his right, he’s pretty accurate. Or inside the pocket, he’s pretty accurate. I think he would tell you he’d rather scramble to the right than the left or stay in the pocket and throw the ball. That’s probably where he’s more successful. It’s important that we make him scramble to his left and flush him out.”

Pittsburgh will also be on the lookout for former teammate Le’Veon Bell.

“It’s just the competitive spirit in us,” Steelers safety Terrell Edmunds said, “just to go out there and play hard and knowing a lot of these guys played on the same team as him, just put it out there and talk junk to him a little bit because that was your teammate at one time. You still may be friends with him, but you just want to go out and beat him.”

Last year, a few Steelers voiced their displeasure of how the whole Bell holdout ended last year with Bell sitting out the whole season despite telling several teammates that he’d only miss a few games.

“I think, honestly, you move on from it,” Steelers defensive end Cam Heyward said. “You understand that we’ve got bigger fish to fry. It’s the next game in our way, we’ve got to take care of business. If we focus in on one person, the other team will beat you, so we are going up there to beat the New York Jets, not Le’Veon Bell.”

Smith-Schuster said it best about his former teammate…

“It’s going to be fun,” said Smith-Schuster. “I’m going to be rooting for him. He’s a guy who when I was rookie, I got here and he was a great mentor for me, a good dude. I’m happy for him, what he’s doing – but at the same time, we’re going to have to put Le’Veon down.”
