The Clemson Insider has decided to take a relatively old concept and put a new spin on it. As we already introduced on our message board, TCI will field weekly recruiting mailbag questions, which will be answered in an article format. We’ll choose questions to answer and provide you with the most relevant information regarding Clemson recruiting.

Without further ado, we took a crack at answering some of your mailbag questions. It should be noted that the questions have been edited for clarity.

Q: Is there any way to list our current prospects and the timeline of their decision — if they have one?

Absolutely!

Right now, the only current prospect of note that has set a commitment date is Stockbridge (Ga.) three-star defensive back Shelton Lewis, who will be making his college decision on Monday, Aug. 8 at around 9:30 a.m. We’ll have more details on Lewis in an answer to another question that was posed, but we are expecting it to be a sunny day in Clemson.

As for someone like Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (Cambridge, Mass.) four-star wide receiver Ronan Hanafin, the general expectation was that the Massachusetts native was going to be committed before the start of his senior season. However, there hasn’t been a whole lot of chatter coming out of his camp. Hanafin very well could choose between Clemson, Notre Dame, Alabama and Boston College before his senior campaign rolls around, but each passing day makes that more and more unlikely.

Another uncommitted prospect that Clemson is heavily in the mix for is Kayden McDonald. The four-star defensive tackle out of North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) is said to be eying a commitment date sometime in the month of October. That would allow him to make an official visit to Clemson for a gameday at Memorial Stadium this fall.

When we wrote about McDonald in this week’s edition of The Insider Report, we reported that he didn’t receive permission from his coach to attend the All-In Cookout because it conflicted with his schedule. The cookout was also on a Monday. Clemson should be able to get him on campus again and there should be a resolution in that regard, sooner than later.

Lastly, I wanted to touch on Christopher Johnson. It seems that Clemson may be out of the running for the three-star running back out of Fort Lauderdale’s (Fla.) Dillard High School. While Johnson hasn’t outwardly removed Clemson from contention, he recently told the Miami Herald that he’s focusing on two schools — Miami and Ole Miss. While Johnson previously told us that an official visit to Clemson sometime this fall would be in the cards, that still remains to be seen. In any event, he’s said to be close to making a decision.

Q: I thought someone shared a comment or link to an article where a UGA site predicted a heavily recruited player was going to pick Clemson on Monday. I can’t remember if he was an offensive lineman or defensive lineman but I recall he was a pretty big player. Was that a figment of my imagination?

I think you may be referring to Kayden McDonald, who received a crystal ball to Clemson from 247Sports back on July 31. As for a player who is set to announce this coming Monday, that’s Shelton Lewis, who also hails from the Peach State.

Clemson is looking to land both of their commitments, but as I noted above, McDonald likely won’t be making any college decisions until October.

Q: It might have already been covered but with us supposedly offering current OSU commit Mathews, would we still take both him and Lewis?

In a perfect world, Clemson would probably love to take both Shelton Lewis and Jermaine Matthews, Jr.

The more talent you can accumulate on your roster the better, right?

However, after speaking with a couple of sources, Clemson did not extend an offer to the Ohio State commit. After messaging with Matthews, he told us that he spoke with cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, but that appears to be the extent of what took place.

So, in that event, I would say it’s very unlikely that Clemson would take both Lewis and Matthews. That’s from a numbers standpoint and the fact that Clemson would be rather unlikely to offer a prospect that’s already pledged their commitment elsewhere. At the same time, the Tigers feel pretty good about their chances of landing Lewis and TCI has already called for this coming Monday to be a sunny day in Tiger Town.

Q: Will Clemson pull back IN a 4-star RB?

I’m sure this question relates to the 2023 recruiting class and it’ll be interesting to see what happens next. Jeremiah Cobb committed to Auburn, while Christopher Johnson is poised to commit elsewhere. Clemson did express interest in Klein Forest (Houston, Texas) four-star Parker Jenkins, but that ship has sailed, as he committed to the University of Houston on Saturday.

The same could be said for Dylan Edwards. And while Clemson’s class of 2023 commits were driving the Tigers’ interest in the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year, Edwards elected to commit to Notre Dame Saturday after walking back his Kansas State pledge the weekend prior.

Clemson is in a tough spot here, but remember CJ Spiller and staff were able to identify Parish Episcopal School (Dallas, Texas) three-star running back, Andrew Paul, as a prospect worth targeting. At one point, Paul seemed like he was heading to Clemson, but Georgia was able to swoop in late and earn his commitment.

While Clemson certainly needs to start closing at the running back position, there shouldn’t be any doubts about the Tigers’ ability to evaluate prospects that blossom during their senior season.

Talented 2023 RB from Florida includes Alabama in top six

Alabama was listed as one of Christopher Johnson’s top six schools. He is rated as a three-star by 247Sports’ recruiting rankings.

2023 running back Christopher Johnson recently announced that he was down to six schools. One of the programs listed was Alabama. The other five programs were Texas A&M, Clemson, Florida State, Ole Miss and Miami.

Johnson is regarded as a three-star according to 247Sports’ recruiting rankings. He is listed at 5-foot-11 and 178 pounds. The Florida native is one of the best sprinters in the state. His raw speed and athleticism personify his playing style. Johnson’s abilities led to him receiving an offer at one of Alabama’s camps back in June. The Tide have been in contact ever since then and appear to have a good chance of landing him.

Thus far, he has taken just one official visit and that was to Rutgers. Along with making the trip to New Jersey, he also took an unofficial visit to Miami.

It is unclear which school may be the favorite to land Johnson. However, the Tide appears to be firmly in the mix to earn a commitment. We will have to wait and see how his recruitment unfolds over the coming months. The goal is likely to sign two running backs in the class with one of them being five-star Richard Young.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Crimson Tide and the recruiting trails of future classes.

UGA offers blazing fast RB Christopher Johnson

Christopher Johnson has the second-fastest time in the 200-meters event in the country.

There are not many people in the country faster than 2023 running back recruit Christopher Johnson. The three-star running back prospect plays football for Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Johnson also runs track for Dillard. He is the second-fastest runner of the 200-meters event in the country with a time of 20.73 seconds. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound athlete has offers from Buffalo, USF, Syracuse, Rutgers, and more.

Johnson was committed to Rutgers, but decommitted the day Georgia offered him. Georgia defensive backs coach Fran Brown is very familiar with the Dillard High School speedster.

Christopher Johnson shows off his impressive speed and acceleration on tape. It will be interesting to see if his recruitment begins to pick up after receiving an offer from Georgia.

The three-star running back recruit announced his scholarship offer from UGA football via Twitter:

Jets’ new power structure shows faith in Joe Douglas

Robert Saleh will now report directly to Joe Douglas, a shakeup of structure that signals a lot of faith in the Jets general manager.

If you didn’t think this was Joe Douglas’ team before, believe it now.

Speaking at Robert Saleh’s introductory press conference last week, Jets vice chairman Christopher Johnson said the team’s organizational structure will change. Now, Saleh will now report directly to Douglas, who in turn will report to ownership. Previously, New York’s general manager and head coach both reported to ownership.

The change shouldn’t alter much in terms of what the Jets accomplish – a collaborative partnership between Douglas and Saleh is still expected  – but the new structure signals the Johnson family’s unilateral support of Douglas’ ability to lead the team from a football operations standpoint.

The last Jets GM to have this type of power was John Idzik, and his tenure ended disastrously. Idzik was Rex Ryan’s boss and their relationship was so bad that it forced owner Woody Johnson to change the power structure. After Johnson fired Idzik and Ryan following the 2014 season, Johnson decided both would report directly to the top, according to the New York Post. This structure began during the Mike Maccagnan-Todd Bowles years and persisted with Maccagnan/Douglas and Adam Gase.

Now Saleh will report to Douglas, and that makes a lot of sense. Douglas has proven more than capable of running the team over the past 19 months despite the team’s 9-23 record over the past two seasons. He effectively shaped the team in terms of cap space, draft picks and player personnel decisions and now the Jets are in a great financial position to sign quality free agents, have a bounty of draft picks to either select valuable prospects or trade throughout the draft, and have a well-respected coach handpicked by Douglas.

Of course, Douglas will seek consultation from Saleh, his staff and other members of the front office. Douglas won’t rule the Jets with an iron fist like other general managers, coaches or owners do. But the freedom to make decisions comes with a certain level of comfortability for Douglas, who saw how the Eagles operated for four seasons with Howie Roseman owning control of the roster while Doug Pederson coached. Though that structure ultimately led to Pederson parting ways with the team, it did provide a certain level of continuity during the Eagles’ successful seasons.

There isn’t a direct correlation between reporting structure and Super Bowls, though. Almost half of the teams in the league – 15 – are organized the way the Jets used to be, where the coach and GM both report to ownership or management. The Kansas City Chiefs, who went to three consecutive AFC Championship games and back-to-back Super Bowls, are among them. Eleven other teams have the more traditional set up the Jets have now and five are without a general manager – either because the coach is the GM like Bill Belichick is with the Patriots, or the owner is the GM like Jerry Jones is with the Cowboys.

The key to it all is communication, collaboration and respect. If Douglas and Saleh have that, then the Jets will be fine with the structure. If they butt heads – or if ownership gets in the way – then there could be problems. For now, the Jets have decided Douglas will run the show and that amount of faith should inspire the rest of the team to follow the GM’s plan.

Joe Douglas praises Robert Saleh’s vision for the future as Jets make hire official

The New York Jets officially announced the hiring of the organization’s 20th head coach, Robert Saleh, on Tuesday afternoon.

Robert Saleh is officially the head coach of the New York Jets.

The team made the announcement official on Tuesday afternoon, just a day after the former 49ers defensive coordinator put pen to paper. Now, Saleh is at One Jets Drive and ready to get to work.

New York went through an extensive head-coaching search, interviewing nine different candidates with unique skills and backgrounds. Saleh, along with newly-hired Falcons head coach Arthur Smith, were the only two candidates to receive in-person interviews with Jets officials. Following New York’s second meeting with Smith this past Thursday, the Jets agreed in principle to make Saleh their next head coach.

“After a thorough process and meeting with a number of talented coaches, it was clear to us that Robert was the right person to help us move forward,” Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said in a statement. “He is a collaborative leader with proven success in the NFL. In addition to his work as a coach on this level, his passion and knowledge of the game along with his vision for establishing an identity for this team sold me. It was also clear that he will partner with Joe (Douglas) to help foster and develop the winning culture we are striving to establish. For us as a group, we were impressed with the way he commanded the space and his ability to communicate his vision throughout the process.”

Douglas added: “We spoke to some tremendous coaches, but Rob is the right partner and leader for us. His vision for this team aligns with what we have been working to establish here the last two years.”

Saleh, who served as the 49ers defensive coordinator from 2017-2020, felt that this was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. The organization’s 20th head coach will be introduced on Thursday at 2 p.m., but he already has a message for Jets fans.

“There are no shortcuts to success, and I am committed to working with Joe to build this team the right way: with talented players that play fast and smart, and a staff that supports and helps develop them through it all,” Saleh said.

“To Jets Fans, your passion and commitment are priceless. I understand your expectations and embrace them. We have a lot of work to do and can’t do it without your support.”

Christopher Johnson addresses head-coaching search, Jets’ future post-Adam Gase

Christopher Johnson shed some light on what’s next for the Jets now that Adam Gase is gone.

Less than 24 hours after firing Adam Gase, Jets CEO Christopher Johnson shared his thoughts on the team’s now-underway head-coaching search and Gang Green’s future.

Johnson discussed what he’s looking for in his next head coach, Joe Douglas’ role in the search, why Gase stayed on so long, and the uncertainty surrounding Sam Darnold and Woody Johnson, among other topics.

The Jets have a lot of questions to answer this offseason, but Johnson sounds confident in the direction his franchise is heading.

Report: Woody Johnson won’t sit in on Jets’ head-coaching interviews

Woody Johnson is not expected to play a key role in hiring the Jets’ next head coach.

Soon, the Atlantic Ocean will no longer separate Woody Johnson from his Jets, but the owner is going to keep his distance anyway.

Johnson is not expected to participate in New York’s head-coaching interviews, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Instead, GM Joe Douglas, president Hymie Elhai and CEO Christopher Johnson — Woody’s younger brother and acting owner — will handle the search and keep the elder Johnson apprised.

Multiple reports say that Douglas’ opinion will carry the most weight, though Christopher Johnson will naturally have to sign off.

Woody Johnson is currently finishing up his term as outgoing President Donald Trump’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom. There had been plenty of speculation the last few years over how the Jets’ ownership structure could be impacted by a Trump loss in the 2020 election. For now, it looks like Johnson will not be too involved as his diplomatic responsibilities near their end and the Jets begin searching for Adam Gase’s replacement.

Christopher Johnson, Joe Douglas met with Jets players after firing Adam Gase

Christopher Johnson and Joe Douglas assured Jets players they’ll hire the right coach.

Christopher Johnson and Joe Douglas met with Jets players Monday morning and assured them they will hire the “right coach.”

New York officially fired Adam Gase on Sunday after two losing seasons. The Jets will conduct another coaching search, one that is expected to be lengthy and thorough, with the hopes of landing a head coach who can lead the franchise in the right direction.

Based on the meeting, Connor McGovern got the sense that the Jets are looking for a “CEO kind of guy” to steer the ship, per The Athletic’s Connor Hughes. Gase’s main focus was on his offense, leaving the defense entirely to Gregg Williams before he was fired at the end of the season.

George Fant acknowledged on Monday that the Jets need a culture change. Fant, who previously played for the Seahawks, said Seattle has a phenomenal culture. However, Fant is “really confident” that Johnson and Douglas will find the right head coach, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

There are plenty of head coaching candidates that the Jets can take a look at. On the NFL level, Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy, Colts DC Matt Eberflus, Ravens DC Don Martindale, Bills OC Brian Daboll and Titans OC Arthur Smith are just some of the names the Jets could target, per NFL Network. Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald and Iowa State HC Matt Campbell could draw interest as well.

Report: Joe Douglas taking point on Jets’ head-coaching search

The responsibility of finding the Jets’ next head coach will fall on Joe Douglas’ shoulders, according to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes.

It’s on Joe Douglas to find the right successor for Adam Gase.

According to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes, Douglas will take point on New York’s search for a new head coach after firing Gase on Sunday night. Gase posted a 9-23 record in two years with the Jets, including a disastrous 2020 season that featured an 0-13 start. Gase, who came to New York with the reputation as an offensive guru, also oversaw the NFL’s worst-ranked offense the last two years and failed to make any sort of positive impact on Sam Darnold’s development.

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson and president Hymie Elhai will contribute to the organization’s search, per Hughes. However, it will be Douglas spearheading the search, identifying targets and conducting most, if not all, of the interviews with prospective candidates.

Among potential suitors for the vacancy are Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Ravens DC Don “Wink” Martindale, Titans OC Arthur Smith and Rams DC Brandon Staley, per NFL Network. Iowa State’s Matt Campbell and Florida’s Dan Mullen were also mentioned as candidates from the college ranks that could receive consideration.

Douglas’ first head-coaching search as a general manager is expected to be a long and thorough one. Unlike the collaborative process between Johnson and Mike Maccagnan that landed Gase in the Big Apple, it looks like New York’s general manager will have the autonomy to decide who the Jets’ next head coach will be without much meddling from franchise brass.

Adam Gase to meet with Christopher Johnson soon: ‘I’m not gonna predict anything’

Adam Gase said he will meet with Christopher Johnson soon following the Jets’ season-finale against the Patriots.

It won’t be much longer until Adam Gase definitively finds out his future with the Jets.

Gase said that he is “sure” he will meet with Christopher Johnson either Sunday night or at some point Monday following New York’s 28-14 loss to the Patriots in Week 17. Although his fate is likely sealed after compiling a 9-23 record in two seasons with the Jets, Gase is avoiding speculating what his meeting with Johnson could entail.

“I don’t know,” Gase said, per NorthJersey’s Andy Vasquez. “I’m not gonna predict anything.”

NFL Network reported Saturday that Gase would likely be fired following New York’s season finale against New England. The expectation is that the search for New York’s next head coach will be a long and thorough process, with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Ravens DC Don “Wink” Martindale, Titans OC Arthur Smith and Rams DC Brandon Staley among the pro-level candidates.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell and Florida’s Dan Mullen were also mentioned as candidates from the college ranks that could receive consideration.

With the Jets starting the 2020 season losing their first 13 games, the writing has been on the wall for Gase for the last couple of months. Barring a major change in thinking, it is highly unlikely Gase leaves his meeting with Johnson gearing up for his third season as Jets head coach.
