The top-graded draft prospects at each position since 2004

Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon reveals his top-graded draft prospects at each position since 2004

On a recent radio appearance, I was asked an intriguing question.

“Who was the best prospect you’ve ever graded?”

I’ve been evaluating prospects and covering the NFL draft professionally since 2004, which meant the 2023 draft was my 20th. The question and the timeframe was a nice catalyst to go back and examine some of the older evaluations.

To answer the question directly, my highest-graded player ever was Wisconsin OT Joe Thomas in 2007. The grading scales and systems I use have changed over the years, but Thomas topped any iteration.

Here are the top-graded players from my evaluations at each position since the 2004 NFL draft.

The best NFL free agents remaining, pre-minicamp edition

As workouts and mandatory minicamps get underway in June, here are the best free agents left on the open market.

The end of May presents NFL teams with a brief respite in the action before offseason workouts begin at the start of June, and mandatory minicamps get underway in mid-June. From there, it’s a mad dash to the preseason, and all that comes after.

As teams prepare for minicamps and training camps, they’re also looking at the remaining holes in their rosters that they were unable to fill through the first wave of free agency and the draft. Even as summer comes, there’s still a fairly long list of players available as free agents who can help those teams fill those holes. Surprise releases can add to that talent, as the Arizona Cardinals’ release of receiver DeAndre Hopkins did last week.

The All-22: What DeAndre Hopkins has to offer his next NFL team

So here are the best remaining free agents left on the open market.

The best available NFL free agents (post-compensatory pick edition)

Now that the draft is over, and compensatory picks are out of the free agency formula, here are the best free agents left on the open market.

On May 2, a contractual change happened in the NFL that will affect how (and how many) free agents still left on the boards are signed. On that date, free agent signings no longer add to the league’s formula for compensatory picks, meaning that NL teams can sign free agents without future picks going to the NFL teams those players previously played for.

That, along with the incoming minicamps, will have teams looking with a new eye at the league’s remaining free agents with a focus on which ones remaining will best fit their rosters, and best fill the remaining craters in those rosters. At this point in this process, none of these players are necessarily franchise-defining pieces, but you know how it goes. In the NFL, at some point, the bottom third of your roster will be just as important at the top third, and here are the guys who can fill that bottom third quite estimably.

With all that in mind, here are the best remaining free agents in the NFL — at least, for now.

Report: Browns have ‘checked in’ with free agent DT Ndamukong Suh

The Browns sniffed around the veteran defensive tackle before the draft.

Despite adding three defensive tackles in NFL free agency to this point in Dalvin Tomlinson, Maurice Hurst, and Trysten Hill, the Cleveland Browns may not be done looking to improve their defensive front this offseason. According to The OBR’s Brad Stainbrook, the Browns sniffed around veteran defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh before the 2023 NFL draft.

Now that the draft has concluded, and the Browns now have a rookie big man in Siaki Ika, could they still have interest in the veteran defensive tackle? There are more spry options than Suh still on the market, but if they are looking for another body to plug gaps up front, the aging Suh could fit the bill.

Ndamukong Suh on what makes Jalen Hurts similar to Tom Brady

Ndamukong Suh called Jalen Hurts a tireless worker comparable to Tom Brady and talked to Rich Eisen about how much he respects the Eagles All-Pro quarterback

Ndamukong Suh is a free agent, and after coming close to securing another Super Bowl with the Eagles, he’s in no rush to retire.

Suh waited until November before signing with Philadelphia in 2022, and during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Suh said, “All options are on the table” when asked about 2023.

One of the most disciplined NFL athletes, Eisen asked Suh about All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurts and what makes him unique.

Suh compared Hurts’ leadership to Tom Brady’s, calling the fourth-year signal-caller “special.”

Suh’s comments echo what owner Jeffrey Lurie and GM Howie Roseman have said regarding having no concern about giving the quarterback upwards of $200 million in a contract extension.

“I don’t know yet. It’s gotta be, honestly, the right situation. . . . I’ll say this, all options are on the table,” Suh said.

The former Nebraska star had ten tackles and a sack in eight regular season appearances for the Eagles, helping solidify the middle along with Linval Joseph after Jordan Davis suffered a high ankle sprain.

7 most important moves that helped the Eagles get to Super Bowl LVII

We’re looking at seven important moves that Howie Roseman and the Eagles made to get Philadelphia back to the Super Bowl

After the Eagles went 4-11-1 in 2020, Howie Roseman cleaned house, hired a new coach, traded quarterback Carson Wentz and put the franchise on a brief rebuild.

Calling it a retool, Roseman gave Jalen Hurts the keys to the franchise, accrued draft picks, and watched as the team made the playoffs a year early in 2021.

After losing to the Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card round, Roseman set out on a plan to give Hurts another elite wide receiver while furnishing Jonathan Gannon’s defense with the weapons needed to have a Super Bowl-caliber unit.

The results were a 14-3 record and a matchup against the Chiefs.

With Philadelphia returning to practice, here are the seven most important moves that helped get the Eagles to the big game.

Eagles’ pair of defensive tackles can earn $125K incentives with Super Bowl LVII win

Eagles defenders Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph can earn $125K incentives if the team wins the #SuperBowl and they play 30% of the snaps

The Eagles are playing in Super Bowl LVII and several players on the roster will be playing for more than just bragging rights over the next calendar year.

Field Yates of ESPN is reporting that Philadelphia’s late-season signees, Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph can both earn $125,000 incentives with a Super Bowl win and 30% of the snaps played.

The Eagles signed Suh and Joseph on consecutive days in November, literally saving the season after the Birds were gashed on the ground in three straight games.

An already talented defensive line got even more powerful despite Jordan Davis missing time with an ankle injury.
