Colts re-sign DE Genard Avery

Genard Avery returns on a one-year deal.

The Indianapolis Colts re-signed defensive end Genard Avery to a one-year deal, per multiple reports Wednesday.

Avery spent the entire 2023 season on the Reserve/Injured list after he picked up a knee injury during joint training camp practice. The injury was to Avery’s LCL and meniscus and required season-ending surgery.

A fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft out of Memphis, Avery was selected by the Cleveland Browns. He spent one and a half seasons in Cleveland before they traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles at the trade deadline in 2019.

Avery then spent the next two and a half seasons with the Eagles before signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2022 offseason. He was cut during the preseason before the 2022 campaign and eventually signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In 62 career games (17 starts), Avery has recorded 106 tackles (65 solo), 8.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and 29 quarterback hits.

Predicting which Colts’ free agents stay and go in 2024.

The Indianapolis Colts are just over a week away from the start of free agency, and there are some big decisions to make when it comes to the players set to hit the market.

Expected to have roughly 14 unrestricted free agents set to hit the market this offseason, the Colts won’t be able to bring all of them back. In fact, it’s likely that most of them find a new home in 2024.

The team’s current standing with the salary cap is among the strongest the NFL.

We took a look at the players the Colts should let walk into free agency and the players who should be re-signed this offseason.

Now, it’s time to predict the fate of every pending free agent for the Colts in 2024.

Colts sign WR James Washington

The Colts signed WR James Washington and placed DE Genard Avery on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts signed free-agent WR James Washington and placed defensive end Genard Avery on the injured reserve list, the team announced Friday.

A second-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington spent the first four years of his career in the Steel City. In those four seasons, he appeared in 60 games (25 starts), recording 114 receptions for 1,629 yards and 11 touchdowns.

His best season with the Steelers came in 2019 when he recorded 44 receptions for 735 yards and three touchdowns.

Washington signed with the Dallas Cowboys but suffered an injury before the season that limited him to just two games in 2022.

Washington joins the roster after Ashton Dulin suffered a season-ending torn ACL during the joint training camp practices with the Chicago Bears.

On the same night, Avery suffered an LCL and meniscus injury that requires season-ending surgery.

Additionally, wide receiver Malik Turner was waived/injured and will revert to the team’s injured reserve list if he clears waivers.

Colts DE Genard Avery will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury.

Indianapolis Colts defensive end Genard Avery suffered a season-ending knee injury and will be placed on the injured reserve list, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Avery suffered the injury during Wednesday’s joint training camp practice with the Chicago Bears. Schefter reported the injury is to Avery’s LCL and meniscus and will require surgery.

Avery was having a solid camp before this injury and figured to be in competition for one of the final roster spots on the defensive side of the ball.

He’s also the second Colts player in as many days to suffer a knee injury that will end his season. Wide receiver Ashton Dulin tore his ACL during joint practices Wednesday night as well.

What we learned from Week 2 of Colts OTAs

Here’s what we learned from Week 2 of Colts OTAs.

The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up their second week of organized team activities (OTAs) at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center and now have just two weeks left of the offseason workout schedule.

While the players are running around in shorts and jerseys without pads or contact, there are still plenty of notes to take away from the practices. The spotlight will, of course, be on rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, but there are other storylines to keep an eye on as well.

It’s also important to note that the media is only permitted to watch one practice per week so the news and notes may not be a perfect reflection of the depth chart or performances as a whole.

With the second week of OTAs now complete, here’s a look at what we learned about the Colts:

Another Tampa Bay Buccaneers free agent has found another home.

This time, it’s former Bucs DE [autotag]Genard Avery[/autotag], who is set to sign with the Indianapolis Colts according to their Twitter account. The Colts will be Avery’s fifth NFL team.

Avery’s contributions in Tampa Bay mainly came on special teams. He was present on 236 snaps in 2022 for the Bucs, and around 37% of them came on special teams. Just 6% of his snaps came on defense, and he also suffered an abdomen injury in Week 14 that kept him out for the rest of the year.

Avery becomes the ninth Bucs player to leave for a different team in free agency. It’s unlikely he’ll be the last, but Tampa Bay’s emphasis on returning special teams depth may make his departure easier on the team for 2023.
