Giants place Matt Peart, Gary Brightwell on injured reserve

The New York Giants have placed OT Matt Peart and RB Gary Brightwell on injured reserve, and waived LB Trent Harris.

The number of players on injured reserve grew for the New York Giants on Thursday with the additions of offensive tackle Matt Peart and running back Gary Brightwell.

Peart suffered a torn ACL in a Week 16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury occurred early in the game, which he started in place of veteran Nate Solder, who was out due to COVID-19.

“One thing about Matt is he’s a really, really good team player and the guys really like him and respect the way he works and goes out there every day and prepares and challenges and competes,” head coach Joe Judge said earlier this week. “You hate seeing any player get hurt, you hate seeing guys who truly love the game and love their team being injured. One thing that we’re certain of is we know he’s going to get great medical attention and he’s going to get great attention to the rehab process and get him back on the field. He’s still a young player, he’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

Peart is expected to undergo surgery in short order and begin his extended rehab and recovery process.

The Giants also ended the rookie season of the aforementioned Brightwell, placing him on IR with a neck injury that was sustained earlier this month.

A sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Brightwell had appeared in 13 games this season, but rushed just once for four yards and caught one pass for six yards. Most of his time was spent on special teams where he recorded eight tackles (two solo).

Meanwhile, the Giants officially placed offensive tackle Korey Cunningham and wide receiver Darius Slayton on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and linebacker Omari Cobb on the practice squad/COVID-19 list. Right tackle Nate Solder (COVID-19) was also activated.

Finally, the team announced that linebacker Trent Harris has been waived.

Giants injury report: Kadarius Toney continues to miss practice

New York Giants WR Kadarius Toney continues to miss practice with a shoulder injury, but RB Saquon Barkley returned to the field on Thursday.

The New York Giants placed three more players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday — Darius Slayton was among them — but welcomed Nate Solder back.

After sitting out during Wednesday’s walkthrough, Saquon Barkley also returned to the field. However, he was not accompanied by Kadarius Toney, who continues to sit out with a shoulder injury.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: RB Gary Brightwell (neck), DL Austin Johnson (foot), WR Collin Johnson (hamstring), OL Billy Price (personal), WR Kadarius Toney (shoulder), WR John Ross (knee/COVID ramp up)

Limited participant: OL Ben Bredeson (ankle), DB Keion Crossen (COVID ramp up), FB Cullen Gillaspia (shin), DB Adoree’ Jackson (quad/COVID ramp up), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), PK Graham Gano (illness), DL Raymond Johnson (illness), TE Chris Myarick (illness), TE Kyle Rudolph (ankle), OT Nate Solder (COVID ramp up)

Full participant: N/A

Giants’ Darius Slayton, two others test positive for COVID-19

The New York Giants have placed WR Darius Slayton and two others on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

The New York Giants continue to deal with a COVID-19 problem that has completely depleted their roster. And while they will get right tackle Nate Solder back on Thursday, they will lose three others.

The team revealed three new positives, including wide receiver Darius Slayton and offensive lineman Korey Cunningham.

Both Slayton and Cunningham have been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and are expected to miss a Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears.

Practice squad offensive lineman Omari Cobb has also tested positive for COVID-19. He’s been placed on the practice squad/COVID-19 list.

That leaves the Giants incredibly thin along the offensive line headed into Sunday’s game even with Solder returning. And they might be forced to start a new center as Billy Price remains away from the team dealing with a personal matter.

Asked about Price, both head coach Joe Judge and offensive line coach Rob Sale offered their prayers for Billy and his wife. They would not offer any further detail but the situation sounds dire and expectations are that Price will not rejoin the team this week.

Giants place Dexter Lawrence on Reserve/COVID-19 list

The New York Giants have placed defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, plus other transactions.

New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, head coach Joe Judge announced on Wednesday morning.

On the positive end of things, the Giants will welcome back cornerbacks Adoree’ Jackson and Keion Crossen, as well as wide receiver John Ross.

All three had been added to the Reserve/COVID-19 list last week and missed a Week 16 game.

Still on the Reserve/COVID-19 list awaiting clearance to return are left tackle Nate Solder, safety Julian Love and defensive tackle Danny Shelton. Practice squad players Jonotthan Harrison and Ka’dar Hollman are also on the list.

Other roster moves happening on Wednesday are the Giants designating linebacker Trent Harris for return and the signing of Omari Cobb to the practice squad. Harris was placed on IR with an ankle injury on December 3.

Cobb was originally signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Marshall in 2020. He spent time on the Giants’ practice squad earlier this year.

Giants’ Isaiah Wilson emerges as RT option following Matt Peart injury

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge says Isaiah Wilson is one of a number of options at right tackle following Matt Peart’s torn ACL.

The New York Giants announced on Monday that offensive tackle Matt Peart suffered a torn ACL in Week 16 and has been lost for the season.

Peart, who was filling in for veteran Nate Solder (Reserve/COVID-19), took just 11 snaps against the Philadelphia Eagles before being injured. He was then replaced by Korey Cunningham.

“To see his season end the way it is with the ACL and how he was really plugging forward — one thing about Matt is he’s a really, really good team player and the guys really like him and respect the way he works and goes out there every day and prepares and challenges and competes. You hate seeing any player get hurt, you hate seeing guys who truly love the game and love their team being injured,” head coach Joe Judge told reporters.

“Obviously, he’s still developing in his position, there are a lot of things he can build on and grow on and can improve on, but his number one priority right now is just to get healthy.”

With Peart out and Solder still dealing with COVID-19, the Giants may have to adjust their offensive line again in Week 17. And although Cunningham is the favorite to start at right tackle if Solder can’t go, the team does have other options.

One mentioned by Judge is practice squad offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson, who was signed earlier this year and elevated as a COVID replacement last Sunday. However, Wilson was the only active player on the team who didn’t see any snaps.

“We’ll go through the week. I think he obviously is an option for us possibly at tackle along with some other players, but really he’s been plugging away in here and he’s made some progress. We’ve flexed him between guard and tackle through some drill and team work,” Judge said. “As we go through this week, we’ll look at a number of guys on our practice squad in terms of flexing them up as who can be that next tackle up for the game.”

Wilson, a first-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in the 2020 NFL draft, has had a plethora of issues over his first two seasons. He’s had multiple run-ins with law enforcement, was suspended by the Titans for violating team rules, traded to the Miami Dolphins and then released after just three days due to missing a pair of workouts.

None of those issues have resurfaced since Wilson joined the Giants. He’s been at all but one practice, appears to be working hard and losing weight, and has drawn rave reviews from his coaches and his teammates. And although he’s viewed more as a developmental project, Wilson may be thrust into live action out of sheer necessity.

Giants place Nate Solder, Danny Shelton on Reserve/COVID-19 list

The New York Giants have placed RT Nate Solder and NT Danny Shelton on Reserve/COVID-19 and activated six others, including Isaiah Wilson.

The New York Giants have placed veteran offensive tackle Nate Solder and nose tackle Danny Shelton on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Neither will play on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In place of Solder, Matt Peart is expected to start at right tackle.

“Matt did some good things in the game (last week). He’s done some things he’s got to clean up as well, same with all of our other players. There are some positives that we’ve got to keep building on,” head coach Joe Judge told reporters on Wednesday. “He is making some strides. I’m pleased with the way he’s working and the attitude he comes out here with.”

Austin Johnson, who is currently listed as questionable with a foot injury, will likely see increased snaps in place of Shelton.

With two new players landing on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the Giants activated four COVID-19 replacements: defensive backs Darqueze Dennard, defensive tackle David Moa, wide receiver David Sills and offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson.

Wilson was not expected to be an activation this year but with numbers dwindling, the team had no choice.

Finally, in some positive illness-related news, the Giants have activated linebacker Cam Brown and rookie cornerback Aaron Robinson. Brown will resume his starting role on special teams and with Adoree’ Jackson still ailing, Robinson will likely start in Week 16.

Lorenzo Carter, Andrew Thomas were highest-graded Giants in Week 15

Lorenzo Carter and Andrew Thomas earned the New York Giants’ highest grades in a Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.

The New York Giants were embarrassed once again on Sunday, falling to the Dallas Cowboys, 21-6, and dropping their record to 4-10 on the season.

There’s a lot to dislike about the current direction of the franchise, but not everything is shrouded in negativity. Ironically, one of the most encouraging things about the 2021 Giants comes on the offensive side of the ball.

After a terrible rookie season, offensive tackle Andrew Thomas is playing lights out in his second year. And in Week 15, he led the Giants’ offense with an 83.7 overall grade from Pro Football Focus (min. 10 snaps).

Just behind Thomas were quarterback Jake Fromm (78.7), center Billy Price (74.1) and right tackle Nate Solder (68.4).

Other notable offensive grades include wide receiver Kenny Golladay (64.0), running back Devontae Booker (63.1) and running back Saquon Barkley (53.2).

The lowest-graded Giants on offense were right guard Will Hernandez (46.2) and quarterback Mike Glennon (41.0).

Defensively, the Giants were led by linebacker Lorenzo Carter, who arguably played the best game of his career. He recorded an overall grade of 90.8, which topped the team.

Checking in just behind Carter were cornerback Jarren Williams (82.0), defensive lineman Leonard Williams (76.6) and linebacker Jaylon Smith (73.7).

Other notable defensive grades include cornerback James Bradberry (65.8), linebacker Azeez Ojulari (60.2) and safety Logan Ryan (54.0).

The lowest-graded Giants on defense were linebackers Reggie Ragland (35.8) and Benardrick McKinney (29.9).

Ragland, however, recorded the team’s highest special teams grade (76.5).

Giants fall to Cowboys, 21-6: Winners, losers and those in between

Here are the winners, losers and those in between from the New York Giants’ Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

The New York Giants (4-10) found themselves on the wrong end of a sloppy 21-6 loss against the Dallas Cowboys (10-4) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

Though it should have been expected, it was another sluggish and sloppy outing from the offense. The offensive line struggled all game, Mike Glennon shouldn’t be the quarterback and the defense allowed Dalton Schultz to run free.

At this point, we’re just counting the weeks until the season is over. Here are the winners, losers and those in between from the Week 15 loss:

Giants fall to Chargers: Winners, losers and those in between

Here are the winners, losers and those in between from the New York Giants’ Week 14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The New York Giants convened in Arizona this week in hopes of resetting and then coming out strong against the Los Angeles Chargers.

That did not happen.

One week removed from what many considered their worst performance of the year, the Giants did everything they could to top it. They were blown out of the water from the opening whistle and any success they did have came as the result of desperation and cleanup.

If there were any questions remaining about jobs being on the line, they were answered in Week 14. Brace yourselves for yet another rebuild, Giants fans.

Here’s a look at the winners and losers (and those in between) from Sunday’s latest embarrassment.

Giants lose to Dolphins, 20-9: Instant analysis

Analyzing the New York Giants’ 20-9 loss to the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in Week 13.

The New York Giants hobbled into their Week 13 matchup with the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. They hobbled out with another humiliating loss that is sure to further erode fan confidence and interest.

Mike Glennon was in at quarterback for the injured Daniel Jones (neck), who could be done the season. Jones is ‘week-to-week’ right now but reports indicate he could miss significant time depending on medical tests this week.

First-round draft pick Kadarius Toney and veteran wideout Sterling Shepard were both inactive again with quad issues, as was starting cornerback Adoree’ Jackson.

Right tackle Nate Solder (elbow), tight end Kyle Rudolph (ankle), wide receiver John Ross (illness/quad) and fullback/special teamer Cullen Gillaspia (calf) all dressed but entered the game with ‘questionable’ tags.

Wide receiver Kenny Golladay left the game in the second quarter with injured ribs but returned in the second half.

The defense picked up where they left off last week against Philadelphia and carried the team the best they could, but the offense is still so pathetically bad that a 10-6 deficit after three quarters seemed insurmountable.

When Miami scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 17-6, the game was essentially sealed. The final was 20-9.

Glennon is a professional backup and he has his limitations, which he showed several times during the afternoon. He got little help from his teammates and coaches in this game which didn’t help.

The Giants dropped to 4-8 on the year and have now lost eight or more games for the fifth straight season and in eight of their last nine.

Notes

  • The point spread at game time was Miami -7 with an over/under of 40. That was a layup given the way the Giants have played this year.
  • The nine points scored in this game were the lowest output of the season. They have scored 20 or fewer points in eight of their 12 games this year. They have not scored 30 points in a game this season.
  • The Giants committed just one turnover — a deep pass that was intercepted — and were flagged for just three penalties for 23 yards.
  • For the first time this season, the Giants did not have a takeaway.
  • The Giants surrendered a touchdown with 26 seconds remaining in the first half. They have now been outscored 52-0 in the final two minutes of the first half this season.
  • Graham Gano’s 51-yard field goal in the fourth quarter set a new franchise record for 50-yarders in a single season (6).
