Jim Schwartz takes the blame for the Eagles defensive debacle vs. the Rams

Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz takes the blame for the Eagles performance vs. the Rams

Jim Schwartz is taking the fall for his players and on Tuesday the Eagles defensive coordinator took fault for putting too much on Philadelphia defenders during their massive collapse in the 37-19 loss to the LA Rams.

Talking to the local media on Tuesday, Schwartz echoed Rodney McLeod’s comments that the Eagles defensive attack was easy for the Rams to gameplan for.

Schwartz took fault for attempting to make the scheme easier for Eagles defenders, with the intent being on them reading and reacting. Instead, Eagles defenders were left confused and out of position.

Schwarts took the blame on Tuesday.

“Well, what happened on the field was I had a poor game plan.

We had a very simple game plan. You guys know that the Rams use a lot of tempos out of their huddle, and a lot of different motions, and things like that, and, the whole sort of theme was to make it as simple as we could — we’ve had success with that in the past. But, in an effort to do that, I also created a lot of conflict with what the guys were doing, and it gave them a lot of stuff to look at. And what I though would make it easier, didn’t make it easier, it made it harder.”

Schwartz went onto say that there wouldn’t be any personnel changes and the Eagles gameplan going forward would be much more complex.

5 Eagles to watch against the Washington Football Team

The Eagles return to action on Sept. 13, here are five Eagles to watch in their first game against the Washington Football Team.

If you told us in April in the weeks before the NFL Draft that the football season would happen I would have been cautiously optimistic. And even that is generous.

Yet here we are, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, on the doorstep of the first Eagles game since January. A lot has changed between the end of last season and the beginning of this one and without further ado, here are the five Eagles to keep an eye on during Sunday’s season opener at Washington.

***

Doug Pederson

Let me start with the leader – Doug Pederson. As head coach of the Eagles, Pederson has unapologetically owned the team in D.C. With a 6-2 record, not having lost since his inaugural season.

Of course, those eight games were against former coach Jay Gruden, but Doug has a decent track record against Ron Rivera, too, having beat him in the 2017 season on Thursday Night Football. Save for a fourth-quarter meltdown the following season which brings the record to 1-1, Pederson’s teams usually match up well with Rivera’s.

Look for Pederson’s guys to be well-prepared and ready for battle against Rivera’s.

Final Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster projection ahead of season opener vs. Washington

Final Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster projection ahead of season opener vs. Washington

[jwplayer 0ao68phe]

The Philadelphia Eagles are less than one week away from a season-opening showdown in D.C. against Chase Young and the Washington Football Team.

With training camp over and several notable changes to the roster, here’s our final 53 man roster projection with two extra players added because the Birds technically can elevate two practice squad players per week, basically carrying 55 if they so choose.

***

QB – 3 — Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts, Nate Sudfeld

Sudfeld was the unquestioned backup but Hurts looked sharp at times during training camp. It wouldn’t be a shock if the Eagles moved on from Sudfeld, but if he makes the team he’ll be the backup one week from now.

Boston Scott

RB – 3 — Boston Scott, Corey Clement, Miles Sanders

The Eagles appeared prepared to enter the 2020 NFL season with two holdovers from last season and a refurbished Corey Clement, but it appears only three running backs will make the cut.

Look for the undrafted rookie Adrian Killins to find a role on the expanded practice squad after being a part of the first round of cuts.

Eagles’ LB coach has high praise for Shaun Bradley, Nate Gerry

Ken Flajole says Shaun Bradley’s leadership ability sticks out

The Philadelphia Eagles face daily criticism for what some describe as a lack of urgency being placed on the linebacker position. Team officials liked what they had on the roster prior to the NFL Draft and after adding Davion Taylor and Shaun Bradley, the group is a lot more athletic.

Eagles’ linebackers coach Ken Flajole addressed the media on Friday and had high praise for veteran Nate Gerry and rookie linebacker, Shaun Bradley.

Bradley is a natural playmaker and looks to be on course for a prominent role on the Eagles defense and it could come at the expense of another rookie, Davion Taylor.

Gerry and T.J. Edwards look to be the starters on early downs, but Jim Schwartz now has several options to turn to based on formation or scheme.

The Philadelphia Eagles now have no players on the Reserve/Covid-19 list after offensive tackle Jordan Mailata was activated.

Mailata joined Lane Johnson, Nate Gerry, and head coach Doug Pederson on the list two weeks ago and the Eagles now have their full roster as the onfield portion of training camp begins.

Doug Pederson rejoins the Eagles after positive Covid-19 test

The Eagles got a familiar face back into the fold on Wednesday when the team announced that Doug Pederson was back in the NovaCare Complex.

Pederson, who tested positive ten-days ago, initially had no symptoms of the virus and was in good spirits after being test twice after an initial positive test.

Duce Staley led the Eagles from the NovaCare Complex while Pederson continued to lead virtually.

The Philadelphia Eagles are just hours from participating in their first 2020 training camp practice after spending the first two weeks working thru a two-phased acclimation period that included weight training and physical fitness.

With training camp now in full swing and several notable changes to the roster, here’s an updated 53 man roster projection:

Sudfeld is the unquestioned backup, but Hurts has looked sharp during the initial workouts as he continues to soak up the NFL game during a shortened preseason.

3 takeaways from the news that Eagles LB Jatavis Brown is retiring

3 takeaways from Eagles LB Jatavis Brown retiring

[jwplayer WwHqH2Su]

The Philadelphia Eagles announced some unexpected news on Sunday when the team announced that they had place linebacker Jatavis Brown on the reserve/retired list.

Here are three takeaways from the move.

***
1. Brown may have wanted to opt-out

Signed early on in free agency, Brown went from would-be starter to unlikely to make the roster, and his love for the game likely dwindled from there. The timing is definitely odd and Brown was one of the linebackers mentioned in Jim Schwartz’s recent zoom meeting with the media. Schwartz described Brown as a player he was “excited” to add to the position because of his speed, along with draft picks Davion Taylor & Shaun Bradley.

Eagles activate LB Nathan Gerry from the Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Philadelphia Eagles received some good news on Sunday morning when the team announced that linebacker Nate Gerry was activated from the reserve/Covid-19 list.

Gerry was placed on the list with Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson after the Eagles star right tackle was confirmed to have tested positive for Covid-19.
