Alabama football countdown to kickoff: 54 days

We are now just 54 days away from the start of Alabama’s 2023 football season!

The Alabama Crimson Tide will take the field for the 2023 college football season in 54 days, as Middle Tennessee State visits Bryant Denny Stadium on Sept. 2.

Here at Roll Tide Wire, we will be counting down the days until Nick Saban and his team take the field.

Today, with just 54 days remaining, we will take a look at a former defensive lineman who dominated the trenches for the Tide, [autotag]Dalvin Tomlinson[/autotag].

Tomlinson played in Tuscaloosa from 2013-16 and appeared in a total of 38 games. For his career, Tomlinson finished with 122 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks.

Tomlinson made a name for himself deflecting opposing quarterback’s passes at the line of scrimmage. Tomlinson totaled nine pass deflections in his Alabama career.

Tomlinson signed a four-year deal with the Cleveland Browns this offseason.

Freshman offensive lineman Miles McVay currently wears No. 54 for the Crimson Tide.

2023 4-star OL Miles McVay officially signs with Alabama

2023 four-star offensive lineman Miles McVay signed his National Letter of Intent to Alabama on Friday. The Illinois native has early enrolled and began practicing with the team in bowl game preparations.

Six of Alabama’s signees have enrolled early and begun bowl preparation with the team. One of those signees is 2023 four-star offensive lineman Miles McVay. The Illinois native has signed and started practicing with the team.

McVay is ranked as the No. 200 overall recruit in the country, according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. He is listed as 6-foot-6, 358 pounds.

247Sports’ Allen Trieu compared McVay to the likes of Chiefs offensive tackle Orlando Brown. That is a strong comparison for an incoming freshman. With Alabama’s struggles up front in recent years, McVay could find himself in the mix to become a day-one starter. It will be interesting to see how his career at Alabama unfolds.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Alabama football and the early signing period as more commits sign their national letters of intent.

Michigan State football OT target Miles McVay chooses Alabama

4-star OT Miles McVay has made his commitment to Alabama

Michigan State missed out on a 4-star offensive line target when Miles McVay made the decision to make his commitment to the University of Alabama.

The Spartans had been working on McVay for a long time and some thought that they may have led for a short time, but ultimately the Crimson Tide won the battle.

Michigan State already holds commitments from four offensive linemen but is looking to add a fifth.

Alabama lands commitment from massive 2023 OT Miles McVay

Alabama landed a big-time commitment on Thursday from 2023 offensive tackle Miles McVay.

The Alabama coaching staff usually signs five to six offensive linemen in each recruiting cycle. The Crimson Tide are well on their way to doing so for the 2023 recruiting class. Before today, there were three offensive linemen committed in the ’23 class. That number increased to four as highly-coveted offensive tackle Miles McVay announced that he was committed to Alabama.

The news is no surprise as the Crimson Tide has held a substantial lead, according to On3’s RPM. They had been the favorite to land McVay for quite some time.

While McVay is now committed to the Crimson Tide, he has set an official visit with Florida for October 14-15. Although it isn’t likely that McVay will flip, it is still something to keep an eye on.

When asked about why he chose Alabama by On3’s Hayes Fawcett, here is what McVay had to say:

“What really stood out to me was the culture of the team,” McVay said. “It really reminded me so much of East Saint Louis. Just the work you have to put in to be the best you can be it’s just like being at east side.”

He has also drawn relatively impressive comparisons to offensive tackles in the NFL. 247Sports’ Allen Trieu compared the Illinois native to Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Orlando Brown. Moreover, here is what he had to say about McVay’s skillset:

Has competed at the varsity level and against top camp competition since very early in his career. Owns a large frame with good wing-span. Technically advanced from a young age. Plays with a sturdy base and has the natural power and strength to where he is tough to bull-rush, but he is also skilled enough as a pass protector to handle speed rushers. We would like to see him continue to manage his weight and keep working on his lateral movement. But he has the size and technical savvy to be a starter, likely at right tackle, for a high-major program. He has proven himself at camps and at East St. Louis and has a chance to play beyond college especially if he takes to a college S&C program.

4-star Oregon target OT Miles McVay announces college commitment

4-star OT Miles McVay, one of the top uncommitted OL on the board, made his college commitment on Thursday.

In terms of both size and stature, one of the biggest offensive linemen in the 2023 recruiting class is off the board.

4-star offensive tackle Miles McVay announced Thursday evening that he would be committing to the Alabama Crimson Tide, choosing Nick Saban over Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks.

For a while, it looked as if McVay was going to come to Eugene, with the Ducks building a strong lead in his recruitment earlier this spring. However, Alabama closed hard and was able to get him to commit in the long run.

Standing at 6-foot-6 and tipping the scales at 358-pounds, McVay ranks as the No. 27 OL in the 2023 class, and No. 186 overall player in the nation.

5 offensive line recruits Michigan State football fans should monitor

5 offensive line recruits Michigan State is heavily recruiting, and looking to make a part of the 2023 recruiting class

As July comes to an end, a big portion of the 2023 recruiting cycle has started to wind down with it. Many recruits are making their commitments and making choices on where they would like to play college football.

Michigan State offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic has put a lot of time on the recruiting trail, and he is hoping that it will pay off.

The Spartans offensive line coach has already put together a nice offensive line class together with 4-stars Clay Wedin and Cole Dellinger to pair with 3-star Johnathan Slack.

Dellinger and Slack project to play on the interior at either guard or center, while Wedin is more of a swing guy who could play inside or outside. It is apparent that Kapilovic will need to add a couple of pure tackles to the mix.

Lucky for him, the Spartans are in the trenches with several top targets. Take a look at who they are:

Michigan State football makes Top-12 for 2023 4-star OT Miles McVay

Michigan State makes Top-12 list for a highly coveted recruit in the 2023 class

If you follow Michigan State football’s recruiting efforts, Miles McVay is a name you will become extremely familiar with in the coming months. The 2023, 4-star offensive tackle is a huge priority for Mel Tucker’s staff, and the Spartans got a good update on that front when McVay included MSU in his latest Top-12 list.

There are some heavy hitters in McVay’s top-12, which you can see in the tweet below, but the two teams that seem to be the top contenders against MSU in this recruiting battle will be Alabama and Oklahoma. This recruitment will be a big opportunity for Tucker to show that he can go up against the biggest teams in the country in order to get high-end talent on his squad.

McVay is the No. 126 ranked player in the 2023 class by 247Sports and their No. 14 ranked tackle by the composite rankings.

Clemson visit on to-do list for top prospect with connection to the Tigers

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a four-star prospect with whom Clemson has shown interest and started to build a relationship.

East St. Louis (IL.) 2023 offensive tackle Miles McVay offered a great deal of insight on his current recruitment process, his budding relationship with Robbie Caldwell and what he’s looking for in a school at the next level.

First, he gave his impressions on Clemson’s veteran offensive line coach, who he speaks with frequently.

“He’s very genuine,” McVay said of Caldwell. “He has a great tradition, with him being a more older coach. He has his traditions and stuff like that. So, it’s kind of good to know that when you come you’ll see what you’re going to get. He’s also a very upfront, very honest guy. That’s one thing you can ask out of your coach is, to be honest with you.”

Clemson and Caldwell are taking the opportunity to get to know McVay, which he certainly values and respects. He understands that Clemson’s recruitment philosophy can be a drawn-out process, but knows that there’s definitely sincerity behind those conversations he has with Caldwell and the rest of the staff.

“It’s something you really appreciate as you get deeper and deeper,” he said. “If you’re blessed to get deeper and deeper into the recruitment process, it’s something that you start to appreciate. A lot of schools throw offers out and they kind of don’t talk to you until Signing Day or around that time when it’s close to your chance. But, with them, they kind of talk to you when they start liking you or when they hear about you. Then, they start building from there.

“The process is a little longer, but I would prefer my coach knowing me, liking me, knowing what I can do when I come in than me basically having to come in with a fresh new staff. That’s kind of a good thing.”

Whether it’s the summer or spring, McVay has marked a Clemson visit in 2022 as something that’s on his to-do list.

“Of course, they want me to come down, come visit, see me in person and meet all the coaches,” he said.

When he eventually makes his way down to The Valley, McVay will already have a connection to the program. His now-former high school teammate, Toriano Pride, is a four-star cornerback signee, who will enroll at Clemson on Jan. 8, 2022.

“He talked about [Clemson] all the time when we talked about it at school,” McVay said of Pride. “He talked about the great culture. He just likes the atmosphere. He said he likes how it feels like home. That’s one of the main things he talks about — that home feeling.”

McVay had an interesting way of breaking down his recruitment — he’s in Phase 3 out of 5.

Phase 1: The Blowup

Phase 2: Starting to take visits

Phase 3: In the process of cutting down his list

Phase 4: Evaluation process

Phase 5: Commitment

McVay wants to have fun and enjoy his process. He wants to see what each and every school that recruits him has to offer. He also has a fundamental understanding of the business side of college football. If this offseason is any indication, a coach could leave for another opportunity, get fired, or retire, all in the blink of an eye.

He doesn’t see the point in rushing into making a decision before you absolutely have to.

“My dad always told me not to rush into stuff,” McVay said. “His favorite saying is when it comes to stuff like this you always gotta look at seven houses before you buy one, especially if you’ve never bought a house before. So, in this case, you only get recruited once. It’s only happening one time. I’m just taking it in, enjoying the process, enjoying talking to the coaches and all that.”

Using that analogy, once you go house hunting, you start looking for what you want in a home. That also applies here to McVay, who has started to outline some of the more important factors he’s looking for in a school at the next level.

“That’s actually what I’ve been doing right now,” he said. “Outlining and trying to figure out what’s not for me and what is. Some examples would be that home feeling. I’m not a very homesick person. I’d go anywhere across the country…that home feeling is one thing, that atmosphere. Also, coming to realize that every place isn’t going to be how it was at home. Once you start learning that, you start figuring out what you want. You can’t be great in a place that you’re not comfortable in. If I’m not comfortable being there, how am I supposed to give you my all?

“You start looking towards what they have to major in. Do they have what you want to be for the rest of your life? Because you never know what God has in store for you. Football may not work out, injuries, you never know. Another big one is, do they fit how I play? I tend to be a very technical person. I like to show all my skill sets. I’m not just a run-heavy guy, a pass-heavy guy. I can get out on screens, I can do pass-blocking, run-blocking, I can pull. Do they utilize me and show all my assets and not just one side of it?”

McVay, who is ranked by Rivals as the No. 5 offensive tackle in the nation for the 2023 recruiting class, already has plenty of suitors at the next level, as he currently holds 22 scholarships — 20 of them coming from schools within the Power 5 conferences.
