Alabama Morning Drive: Tide lands commitment No. 17 in class of 2023

Alabama starts the month of August off with a bang landing a commitment from four-star DL Hunter Osborne.

Good morning, Tide fans! Welcome to our Tuesday edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope each of you has had a great start to the work week as we continue to inch closer and closer to the start of fall camp.

[autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and Alabama had a tremendous month of July on the recruiting trail and the staff in Tuscaloosa carried that right over into the month of August.

On Monday evening, four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Hunter Osborne[/autotag] announced his commitment to Alabama giving the Crimson Tide its seventeenth commitment for the class of 2023.

Osborne is the No. 113 overall player and No. 12 defensive lineman in the nation according to On3’s consensus rankings.

Let’s take a look at a few other stories that Alabama fans should be monitoring this morning.

Four-star Hunter Osborne chooses Alabama over Texas and others

After losing out on Hunter Osborne, let’s look at a few battles Texas could win.

Hunter Osborne is headed to Tuscaloosa, AL. He won’t have to drive very far to get there. The talented defensive lineman from the state of Alabama chose the Crimson Tide over Texas, Clemson, Tennessee and others.

Osborne momentarily flirted with the idea of coming to Texas, but after receiving the Alabama offer he longed to receive, he chose his home state team.

Texas hoped his ties with former teammate Justice Finkley might win him over, but ultimately the 6-foot-4 250-pound lineman chose to stay home.

Osborne is the No. 12 defensive lineman and No. 113 overall player in the nation.

With a number of players set to commit soon, let’s look at a few potentially imminent battles in which Texas could win.

Alabama lands commitment from versatile 2023 DL Hunter Osborne

Alabama lands its first d-line commit for the 2023 class in Alabama native Hunter Osborne.

The good news on the recruiting trail continued on Monday as Alabama was able to land 2023 four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Hunter Osborne[/autotag]. He chose the Crimson Tide over Clemson, Tennessee and Texas. It wasn’t a shocking decision considering Osborne lives less than an hour away from Tuscaloosa. However, he was once leaning toward Clemson after he took an official visit on June 3.

When asked by On3’s Chad Simmons why he chose the Crimson Tide, here is what Osborne had to say regarding his decision:

“How the players carry, how the coaches carry themselves… you have no choice but to believe that you’re around the best of the best and true champions, Everyone in the program is locked in and focused. I wanted to be around that because I want to be around guys that want to be great.”

Alabama has had no shortage along the defensive line in recent years. In the past five years, eight former Alabama defensive linemen have been drafted into the NFL. That number will likely increase after the 2022 season with Justin Eboigbe and Byron Young both being fourth-year seniors. If that is the case, Alabama could look to replace them with players like Hunter Osborne, Damon Payne, or Isaiah Hastings. Nonetheless, the Crimson Tide will once again reload at the position.

Alabama has pushed for several other in-state defensive linemen in James Smith and Kelby Collins. The expectation is that one of those two will end up in Tuscaloosa when all of their recruitment is said and done. Regardless of what they decide on their future, Osborne seems locked in with the Crimson Tide.

With Osborne being a native of Trussville, Alabama, he emphasized the importance of being able to stay in-state to play at Alabama. Here is what he told Simmons in an interview on Monday:

“I’m happy to put on and represent my state playing for the University of Alabama. Now, I’m just ready to work. I’m gonna do the best I can. I’m gonna put my all in and leave nothing out. To all the fans at the University of Alabama, you’ll get the most out of me.”

Alabama now has the No. 2 overall class, according to 247Sports’ rankings.  Crimson Tide fans should keep a close eye on Edric Hill and Jordan Renaud.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Osborne over his senior year as well as other Alabama football recruiting news.

Alabama listed as a top school for 2023 in-state DL Hunter Osborne

Alabama made the top four for 2023 DL Hunter Osborne. He has been a priority target for the Tide since receiving an offer in January.

Alabama was listed as one of four finalists in 2023 defensive lineman Hunter Osborne’s recruitment. Osborne posted his top four schools to his Twitter account on Monday afternoon. The other programs that he listed were Clemson, Tennessee and Texas. While announcing his top schools, he also announced that he would be making his commitment on August 1.

Osborne is a four-star prospect, according to 247Sports recruiting rankings. He is listed at 6-foot-3, 250 pounds. With his size, he could likely play off the edge or along the interior of the defensive line. Here is what 247Sports’ national recruiting analyst Cooper Petagna had to say about Osborne’s playing style:

“Already 250-pounds with some length, position projection will depend on how he physically develops into his body over the next year and a half. Has the ability to play out on the edge but possesses a more natural skill set inside as a three-technique; anchoring the run and offering some pass rushing upside. Projects to a high-level multi-year starter at a Power Five program at the next level with some developmental upside.”

He is currently trending heavily toward Alabama. On3’s RPM favors Alabama at 90.2% likelihood. Not to mention, he also has one crystal ball in favor of the Tide from 247Sports’ director of football recruiting Steve Wiltfong. It will be a surprise if Osborne doesn’t choose Alabama.

Here is what Osborne said when speaking about the Tide with On3’s Hayes Fawcett:

“Bama’s development and culture makes them a finalist, Osborne said. “Coach Saban is the goat and the opportunity to play for him is something to think about. Coach Roach and I talk very often and our relationship is top-notch. It’s a business down at Bama and everyone knows what the end goal is.”

He has a great relationship with defensive line coach [autotag]Freddie Roach[/autotag]. Texas was once the leader in his recruitment, but it doesn’t appear to be that way now. Osborne would be the second defensive lineman to join the class along with edge rusher [autotag]Yhonzae Pierre[/autotag]. Alabama fans should be tuned in on August 1 for his commitment.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Osborne’s recruitment and other recruiting news involving the program.

Top 5 in-state prospects who are uncommitted

The state of Alabama’s crop of talent in the class of 2023 is elite. Let’s take a look at the top five prospects who have yet to commit.

The 2023 recruiting cycle has provided plenty of storylines so far in July and August appears like it will be much of the same.

The in-state crop for the class of 2023 is as good a group as I can remember and several have already made their college decisions but there are still plenty left uncommitted.

In fact, there are still two five-star prospects from the state of Alabama that have yet to decide on their college futures in Carver High School teammates James Smith and [autotag]Qua Russaw[/autotag].

Considering how much talent remains available within the state, I thought we could quickly go over the top five remaining prospects who are currently not committed to a university.

Let’s get right to it!

Priority Clemson defensive lineman target sets commitment date

Clemson is a finalist for a priority four-star defensive lineman prospect.

Clemson could add another massive defensive line recruit to its 2023 class next week.

Four-star defensive lineman Hunter Osborne took to Twitter on Monday to announce that he will be announcing his commitment on August 1 at 6 p.m. CDT at Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, Ala.

He will choose between his four finalists: Alabama, Clemson, Tennessee and Texas.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Osborne is the No. 17 defensive line prospect in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

As a junior in 2021, he recorded 60 total tackles (10 for loss), 5.5 sacks and nine pass breakups.

Osborne last visited Clemson on June 3 and has since visited the other three finalists.

If he does commit to Clemson, he would be the sixth defensive lineman commit alongside four-star Vic Burley, four-star Stephiylan Green, four-star AJ Hoffler, four-star David Ojiegbe and five-star Peter Woods.

While Osborne’s interest in Clemson is significant, On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Alabama over a 90 percent chance to land him. 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong also recently crystal balled Osborne to the Crimson Tide.

2023 defensive lineman announces Tennessee as a finalist for commitment

A 2023 defensive lineman announces Tennessee as a finalist for his commitment.

Second-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel and his staff continue to recruit future Vols.

2023 defensive line prospect Hunter Osborne announced his top four schools Monday.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Osborne is from Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, Alabama.

He will announce his college commitment Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. EDT at Hewitt-Trussville High School.

Tennessee has 19 commitments for its 2023 football recruiting class: Quarterback Nico Iamaleava Jr, tight end Ethan Davis, offensive lineman Ayden Bussell, defensive lineman Trevor Duncan, safety Jack Luttrell, edge rusher Nathan Robinson, wide receiver Nate Spillman, edge rusher Caleb Herring, safety Sylvester Smith, linebacker Will Stallings Jr., safety John Slaughter, linebacker Jeremiah Telander, defensive lineman Tyree Weathersby, cornerback Cristian Conyer, wide receiver Cameron Seldon, offensive lineman Shamurad Umarov, edge rusher Chandavian Bradley, linebacker Jalen Smith and wide receiver Nathan Leacock.

Below are the four schools Osborne will be choosing from.
