Jets activate Bryce Hall, sign Mike White to active roster prior to kickoff vs. Patriots

The Jets activated Bryce Hall and signed Mike White to their active roster prior to playing the Patriots on Monday night.

Bryce Hall will make his NFL debut when the Jets host the Patriots at MetLife Stadium on Monday night.

New York activated Hall to the active roster prior to kickoff against New England. The Virginia product was designated to return to practice on Oct. 21 after he was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list at the beginning of the season as he worked his way back from a gruesome ankle injury suffered in his senior year. Hall also spent time on the COVID-19/reserve list at the beginning of training camp. His activation comes in wake of the Jets releasing Quincy Wilson earlier this week.

New York also signed Mike White to the active roster to serve as Joe Flacco’s backup with Sam Darnold doubtful to suit up after aggravating his previously injured shoulder against the Chiefs last weekend, placed Trevon Wesco on injured reserve and elevated Ross Travis and Tanzel Smart from the practice squad to its active roster.

Wesco injured his ankle in practice last week. Prior to going down, he served as the Jets’ primary fullback and blocking tight end in their first eight games. Travis spent training camp with New York after it claimed him on waivers last December, while Smart signed with Gang Green’s practice squad on Oct. 14. A sixth-round pick of the Rams in 2017, Smart has totaled 20 tackles in 31 career games.

Jets injury report: Jabari Zuniga activated, Jamison Crowder misses practice

The Jets activated DE Jabari Zuniga and designated LB Patrick Onwuasor to return from injured reserve.

The Jets got a bit healthier this week.

New York made several roster moves ahead of its Week 8 matchup with the Chiefs, including bringing back a few injured players. New York activated rookie defensive end Jabari Zuniga, designated linebacker Patrick Onwuasor to return to practice and brought receiver Lawrence Cage back to the practice squad. Zuniga and Onwuasor haven’t played this season after sustaining injuries in training camp and being placed on injured reserve on Sept. 7.

Zuniga could make his Jets debut as early as this week against the Chiefs. The third-round rookie would be a welcome addition to the Jets defensive front-seven after Gang Green lost lineman Kyle Phillips to an ankle injury. Phillips was placed on season-ending injured reserve Wednesday.

The Jets have 21 days to activate Onwuasor after designating him to return following a knee injury he suffered in training camp. The inside linebacker would likely backup Neville Hewitt or Avery Williamson after signing with the Jets this offseason. Onwuasor tallied 48 tackles, five tackles for a loss, three sacks and six quarterback hits for the Ravens in 2019.

Cager returns to the practice squad after suffering a knee injury in Week 4 against the Broncos. He hasn’t played since but could be called up again if the Jets need more receiver help in the coming weeks. Cager, a 2020 undrafted free agent, caught two passes for 35 yards in his first NFL start after being called up from the practice squad early this season.

The Jets released quarterback David Fales from the practice squad to make room for Cager. Mike White will remain on the practice squad as the Jets third quarterback behind Sam Darnold and Joe Flacco.

As for the injury report at practice, WR Jamison Crowder (groin) didn’t participate but could Thursday. S Bradley McDougald (shoulder) is being evaluated and is not expected to practice this week. WR Breshad Perriman is still in concussion protocol. K Sam Ficken (groin) could return to practice this week.

Darnold (shoulder) was limited for precautionary measures.

Do the Florida Gators have Final Four potential in 2020-21?

UF has a talented group on its men’s basketball squad but was a disappointment last season. Can they make the Final Four this year?

“This year is going to be the year” is starting to become a theme for Florida basketball.

Last season, the Gators began as a top-10 team before struggles in the non-conference schedule quickly dropped them out of the top 25. UF was a marginal NCAA Tournament team by the end of the season, despite preseason projections having them making a deep run.

Florida’s roster is once again loaded with talent in 2020-21, though, and coach Mike White has never assembled a roster this experienced in Gainesville.

The Athletic’s Dana O’Neil is optimistic about the state of the Gators program. Asked by a reader if Florida has the potential to be a Final Four team, here’s her response.

Dana, What are your thoughts on the Florida Gators? How far do they go in the tourney? — Robin C.

There is no reason the Gators can’t go far. None. That roster is absolutely loaded — Keyontae Johnson, Scottie Lewis, Noah Locke, plus transfers Tyree Appleby and Anthony Duruji — and better yet, they are old. That’s the game-changer. Anyone who reads my mailbag regularly knows I’m a big believer in old guys win in March.

That’s the difference, I think, between last year’s crash and burn disappointment and this year’s legit possibility. Florida always was talented, but college basketball has proven time and time again that talent doesn’t always win games. You have to know how to win and play together and handle expectation and play smart.

These guys aren’t going to get their heads turned by people hyping them up, not after it all went sideways. They understand the difference between high school rankings and reality. I expect a far more mature approach, and this year especially, that’s going to pay huge dividends.

To answer your question succinctly: Florida is good enough to go to the Final Four.

If the Gators are going to be playing deep into March, they will need to play with more chemistry, especially on offense, than they have in past seasons under White. Whether or not that happens could be make-or-break for his future in Gainesville.

Jets activate Le’Veon Bell off injured reserve after three-game absence

The Jets activated Le’Veon Bell off injured reserve after he missed the last three games with a hamstring injury.

After a three-game absence caused by a hamstring injury, Le’Veon Bell will make his return against the Cardinals on Sunday.

The Jets activated Bell off injured reserve after he spent the last three weeks on it with a hamstring injury. New York also signed Jimmy Murray to the active roster and promoted Mike White and Lamar Jackson from the practice squad. Alec Ogletree and Josh Malone were both released.

Bell should be a boost to a Jets’ running game that has struggled so far in 2020. As a team, the Jets are averaging 98.5 rushing yards per game, good for 26th in the league.

Murray will serve as an extra offensive lineman with Mekhi Becton listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game. White will be the backup quarterback behind incumbent starter Joe Flacco.

Jackson made his debut last week against the Broncos and two tackles and a pass breakup. He’ll be needed if Bless Austin can’t go, as he is listed as questionable with a calf injury.

Jets make 6 roster moves before Thursday’s game vs. Broncos

The Jets made a handful of roster moves ahead of Thursday’s game against the Broncos.

The Jets made a handful of roster moves ahead of Thursday night’s game against the Denver Broncos.

New York announced it has activated wide receiver Jeff Smith off of injured reserve, signed defensive back Javelin Guidry from the practice squad and promoted wide receiver Lawrence Cager and defensive back Lamar Jackson to the active roster. The Jets also released quarterback Mike White and cornerback Nate Hairston.

Smith was getting first-team reps in training camp before going down with a shoulder injury. With Smith and Jamison Crowder back, Sam Darnold will have some better options to throw to on Thursday.

As for Guidry, the Jets really liked how he performed in training camp and signed him to their practice squad. He had the second-fastest 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine behind WR Henry Ruggs.

Cager played against the Colts last week and had two catches for 35 yards in his NFL debut. Thursday will be Jackson’s NFL debut if he gets in on the action. With Hairston being released and two cornerbacks being added to the roster, it looks like the Jets will make some changes to their struggling secondary.

The release of White means Joe Flacco will be Darnold’s backup on Thursday. Flacco missed the first three games, as he was coming back from offseason neck surgery.

Mike White will be Jets’ backup QB vs. 49ers

With Joe Flacco not quite ready to return from a neck injury, Mike White will stand in behind Sam Darnold as New York’s No. 2 QB Sunday.

Mike White will be the Jets’ No. 2 quarterback against the 49ers, Adam Gase announced Friday.

Joe Flacco (neck) is not quite ready to return to action, but the Jets have not placed him on injured reserve, which could mean a return is imminent. White will be Sam Darnold’s immediate backup for Sunday’s matchup as fourth-round pick James Morgan is not ready to stand under center with a limited training camp, no minicamp or OTAs.

A former fifth-round pick out of Western Kentucky by the Dallas Cowboys, White spent a significant portion of 2019 on New York’s practice squad. He turned heads with his play during training camp this summer, but it wasn’t enough to make Gang Green’s outright 53-man roster. White passed through waivers and was placed on the team’s practice squad before being promoted to the active roster for Week 1.

He has no NFL experience.

Jets vs. Bills inactives: Denzel Mims, Avery Williamson officially out for Week 1

Denzel Mims and Avery Williamson are among the inactive for the Jets’ season opener against the Bills.

The Jets are officially without two impact starters for their season opener against the Bills.

Denzel Mims and Avery Williamson are both inactive after being ruled out on Friday. After missing a chunk of training camp because of a hamstring injury, Mims hurt his good hamstring on Thursday and missed practice on Friday. According to Adam Gase, Mims could be a candidate for short-term injured reserve, but it remains to be seen if that is the direction New York opts to go.

Williamson was set to return from a torn ACL suffered in the 2019 preseason on Sunday, but he will have to wait at least another week to get back on the field. With Williamson and Patrick Onwuasor (injured reserve) sidelined, Blake Cashman and Neville Hewitt will start at inside linebacker. Harvey Langi, who primarily plays outside linebacker, will serve as a backup.

Joe Flacco (neck) and running back La’Mical Perine (ankle) are also out for the Jets. New York signed Mike White to serve as Sam Darnold’s back up against Buffalo and promoted Josh Adams from the practice squad to take Perine’s place. White has no regular season experience, while Adams rushed eight times for only 12 yards with the Jets in 2019.

Tarell Basham (ankle), Jamison Crowder (hamstring), Alex Lewis (shoulder), Marcus Maye (calf/ankle), Breshad Perriman (knee) and Nathan Shepherd are all active. Lewis and Maye were questionable leading up to Sunday, but will suit up for New York. Wide receiver Josh Malone is also up from the practice squad.

As for the Bills, they are without starting cornerback Josh Norman, who landed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury on Saturday. Defensive tackle Vernon Butler (hamstring) is inactive, as is rookie defensive end A.J. Epenesa.

Jets sign Mike White to active roster, promote Josh Adams and Josh Malone from practice squad

The Jets signed Mike White to the active roster and promoted Josh Adams, Josh Malone from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Jets have themselves a new No. 2 quarterback — for now.

On Saturday, New York signed Mike White to its active roster for Week 1. Despite having no regular season experience, White got the nod over David Fales, who remains on the practice squad, while Joe Flacco continues to work his way back from offseason neck surgery.  He will serve as Sam Darnold’s backup until Flacco returns to action. Rookie James Morgan will be the Jets’ third-string quarterback.

The Jets also addressed two offensive skill positions leading up to their season opener, promoting running back Josh Adams and wide receiver Josh Malone from the practice squad. Adams will presumably take the spot of the injured La’Mical Perine as the No. 3 running back behind Le’Veon Bell. The 23-year-old rushed for only 12 yards on eight carries with New York in 2019.

Malone will likely fill in for Denzel Mims, who is doubtful with a hamstring injury. Even with Malone up from the practice squad, the Jets are down to only five wide receivers — Braxton Berrios, Jamison Crowder, Chris Hogan and Breshad Perriman. The 24-year-old appeared in only two games with the Jets last season and played primarily on special teams. In three NFL seasons, Malone has caught seven passes for 75 yards and one touchdown.

Adam Gase refuses to name Jets’ backup QB vs. Bills

The Jets head coach would not commit to a No. 2 quarterback for the Jets season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Adam Gase is keeping the Jets’ depth chart close to his vest before his team’s season opener.

On Friday, when ESPN’s Rich Cimini asked Gase who his No. 2 quarterback will be on Sunday against the Bills, the coach gave a non-answer before exchanging some banter with Cimini. “It’s a 50-50 shot,” Gase said.

Cimini was looking for a more definitive answer, but Gase didn’t relent, saying “it could be Mike White, it could be Joe Flacco” as an alternative to David Fales. While Gase was clearly being coy, Flacco will not be the Jets’ backup quarterback on Sunday, as the team ruled him out with a neck injury.

That leaves White and Fales, who are both on New York’s practice squad. The Jets aren’t quite ready to give rookie quarterback James Morgan the reigns of the No. 2 spot on the depth chart just yet.

Gase went on to ask, “Should I just fax our gameplan to Buffalo?”

Cimini offered a retort, asking Gase, “Do you think [Bills head coach] Sean McDermott is on the edge of his seat” waiting to find out who the Jets’ backup to Sam Darnold will be?

Ironically enough, earlier this week, McDermott wouldn’t give any indication as to who will start on the right side of Buffalo’s offensive line this weekend.

As Cimini pointed out during his back and forth with Gase, the Jets head coach learned the importance of a backup quarterback in 2019. New York was forced to play Luke Falk between Darnold’s bout with mono and Trevor Siemian’s gruesome ankle injury.

The hope is that Darnold requires no such relief this season.

Jets Injury Report: La’Mical Perine misses practice, Denzel Mims and Breshad Perriman full participants

Jets Injury Report 9/9/20.

La’Mical Perine’s prospects of making his NFL debut against the Bills on Sunday are not looking too good.

New York’s rookie running back missed practice on Wednesday due to an ankle injury that has been bothering him for over a week. The injury is not considered to be serious, but Perine’s status for Week 1 is in jeopardy at this point. In the event Perine cannot suit up this weekend, Josh Adams will likely be called up from the practice squad to take his place.

Tarell Basham, Joe Flacco, Alex Lewis, Marcus Maye and Avery Williamson were also limited on Wednesday. Flacco is not expected to be ready to go for Week 1 as he works his way back from offseason neck surgery, but Basham, Lewis, Maye and Williamson should be ready to go for Sunday. Assuming Flacco can’t play this weekend, David Fales or Mike White will be called up from the practice squad to serve as Sam Darnold’s backup.

Every other player on New York’s 53-man roster was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, including Denzel Mims and Breshad Perriman. This is an encouraging development for the Jets, as both players have been plagued by injuries throughout training camp. Mims missed significant time with a hamstring injury, while a barking knee kept Perriman out of action for a couple of weeks.

With Mims and Perriman back and full participants in practice, New York’s starting wide receiver is once again complete, giving Darnold his top three weapons to work with when he takes the field for the first time in 2020 on Sunday.
