Which former Gators are playing in Super Bowl LVIII?

For the 22nd year in a row, a former Florida Gator will play in the Super Bowl, and two could make history with back-to-back rings.

Now that we know which teams are playing in Super Bowl LVIII, we know which former Florida Gators will be a part of the big game.

Several former Gators have played in (and won) Super Bowls. In fact, this is the 22nd Super Bowl in a row to feature a player who spent his college years in Gainesville. Legendary Dallas Cowboys running back Emmit Smith and linebacker Godfrey Myles both won back-to-back Super Bowls in the early ’90s.

This year, five Gators are a part of the two organizations playing for the Lombardi trophy. Let’s take a look at each of them.

Florida Gators tied for lead with most players on Super Bowl team rosters

All seven of these former Gators are in a position to be a part of gridiron glory.

Super Bowl LVII is set for a Sunday, Feb. 12, meeting between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles inside State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. While there is still a bit of time before the 6:30 p.m. EST kickoff, the bookmakers appear to be slightly bullish on the Eagles while the Chiefs are looking for their second NFL title in three appearances over the past four seasons.

Both teams have Florida football alumni among their ranks, with four expected to play in the mid-February championship game. However, if one includes those listed on injured reserve or the practice squad as USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg did in his recent article on collegiate representation in the big game, the Orange and Blue are tied for the most former Gators among the final two teams. Take a look at the names and a brief blurb from Myerberg below.

Kansas City: DE [autotag]Carlos Dunlap[/autotag], WR [autotag]Kadarius Toney[/autotag], P [autotag]Tommy Townsend[/autotag], RB [autotag]La’Mical Perine[/autotag].

Philadelphia: WR [autotag]Tyrie Cleveland[/autotag], S [autotag]C.J. Gardner-Johnson[/autotag], OT [autotag]Fred Johnson[/autotag].

Dunlap joined Kansas City in the offseason and chipped in four sacks as part of the Chiefs’ defensive line rotation. Toney injured his ankle in the AFC championship game win against Cincinnati but should be ready for the Super Bowl. For the Eagles, Gardner-Johnson tied for the league lead with six interceptions after being traded by New Orleans in the preseason amid a contract dispute.

Florida is tied with the Oklahoma Sooners with the most players mentioned at seven, while the Florida State Seminoles follow with six, and Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, Mississippi State Bulldogs and Nebraska Cornhuskers with four.

Chiefs announce flurry of roster moves ahead of AFC Championship Game

The #Chiefs have activated TE Jody Fortson to the 53-man roster, elevated two players from the practice squad and made two more practice squad transactions.

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced several roster moves ahead of the AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

With an open roster spot following the release of Chris Lammons earlier this week, the Chiefs have activated TE Jody Fortson to the 53-man roster from the team’s injured reserve list. This was a move that Andy Reid had been foreshadowing all week and a welcomed return ahead of the AFC title game.

It wasn’t the only move the team made to add to their roster ahead of the big game on Sunday. The Chiefs also made a pair of practice squad elevations and two more practice squad transactions.

The Chiefs elevated two receivers from the practice squad for the game. This doesn’t necessarily mean both players will be active as we learned last week. They elevated Marcus Kemp and Austin Reiter for the AFC divisional round and neither played. This time around Kemp and Ihmir Smith-Marsette got the call-up to the active roster. Kemp has a greater chance of playing this week given his experience on special teams in the role vacated by Lammons.

In terms of the moves made that won’t impact the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs have again released WR/RB Jerrion Ealy from the practice squad. He’s approaching C.J. Spiller levels of replaceability at this point.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs added RB La’Mical Perine to the practice squad. Perine’s older cousin, Samaje Perine, plays for the Bengals. Chiefs fans will remember Samaje well from the Week 13 matchup where he had a big day against Kansas City. La’Mical was drafted by the Jets in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of the University of Florida. He’s spent time in New York, Philly and most recently Miami.

Eagles announce four roster moves ahead of season opener at Detroit

Philadelphia Eagles sign wide receiver Auden Tate and tight end Dalton Keene to the practice squad. The team released quarterback Reid Sinnett in the process

The Eagles announced four roster moves on Wednesday, just hours before the first practice of the regular season.

With the team preparing for the season opener at Detroit, Philadelphia signed Auden Tate (WR) and Dalton Keene (TE) to the practice squad.

The team released running back La’Mical Perine and quarterback Reid Sinnett from the practice squad to make room.

The Eagles are adding a veteran running back to the practice squad, signing former Jets rusher La’Mical Perine.

Perine, 24, was selected by the New York Jets with pick No. 120 overall in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida.

Last season Perine appeared in four games with the Jets, logging eight carries for 31-yards.

Former Gators running back La’Mical Perine cut by New York Jets

Former Florida running back La’Mical Perine was cut by the Jets on Monday. New York drafted him in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft after he played four years in Gainesville.

After two seasons with the New York Jets, former Florida running back La’Mical Perine has been cut and is headed to free agency.

NFL teams need to be down to a 53-man roster by August 30, and Perine was too far down the Jets’ depth chart to survive the cuts. As a rookie, he rushed for 232 yards and scored two touchdowns. He failed to follow things up in his sophomore campaign, appearing in just four games and making just eight carries.

The emergence of Breece Hall, a 2022 second-round pick, and Michael Carter, a 2021 fourth-rounder, forced Perine down the depth chart. The writing was on the wall in recent weeks, and now Perine, a former fourth-rounder himself, must look for another opportunity to play in the NFL.

He saw much more success at Florida, racking up 2,485 yards on 493 carries and scoring 22 touchdowns over four seasons. Perine was a contributor in Gainesville from day one, but he never quite found his footing in New York.

The good news is that Perine had solid showings in the preseason against the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles. He carried the ball just one time in the Jets’ final preseason game before being cut, though. Hopefully, a team saw enough from him to warrant a second chance.

Jets part ways with RB La’Mical Perine

A 2020 fourth-round pick for the Jets has been cut

A 2020 fourth-round pick at running back has been let go by the Jets.

New York has waived RB La’Mical Perine, per Brian Costello of the New York Post, as they begin their cuts down to 53 players.

With the additions of Michael Carter and Breece Hall over the last two drafts, Perine was pushed down the depth chart and his chances of making the team this season were likely slim for a while.

Perine rushed for 232 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie in ten games, missing time due to an ankle sprain.

He appeared in just four games last season and saw just eight carries for 31 yards.

Joe Douglas’ 2020 draft class looks disastrous so far

Joe Douglas’ first draft class as Jets GM looks like a bust after 29 games.

Joe Douglas’ first draft class looks like a bust through its first 29 games.

The nine players Douglas picked in 2020 haven’t lived up to expectations. Some of that has been because of injuries, but even the healthy players haven’t performed well. Cornerback Bryce Hall is the only one who looks like a solid player, but one starter — drafted in the fifth round — isn’t enough to save a whole draft class.

Douglas made these picks when Adam Gase was still the coach and Sam Darnold was still the quarterback, but most of the selections weren’t good as rookies in the systems they were drafted to play in, either. Douglas’ second draft class looks strong through 13 games, but the Jets need all of their young players to perform.

That hasn’t happened for most of the 2020 picks. Here’s how all nine have fared so far in their Jets careers.

Forgotten Jets running back will get a chance vs. Saints

La’Mical Perine, a 2020 4th-round pick, has hardly played this year. He’ll get a chance vs. the Saints with the Jets’ backfield banged up.

The Jets had high hopes for La’Mical Perine when they used a fourth-round pick on the running back in 2020, but the Florida product has spent most of his sophomore season riding the bench.

Drafted with Adam Gase’s offense still in place, Perine never caught on with New York’s new coaching staff. Michael Carter, a 2021 fourth-rounder, quickly usurped Perine as Gang Green’s up-and-coming rusher, while more experienced players like Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson have been tasked with handling the rest of the carries. Even Austin Walter, a player with one rush before this season, has seen action over Perine when the Jets were in need of depth.

Perine has only seen seven offensive snaps and 19 special teams snaps over three games in his second NFL season. The 23-year-old has mostly been inactive, but that will change Sunday against the Saints. With Carter still recovering from an ankle injury and Coleman out with a concussion, Perine will be New York’s third back behind Johnson and Walter.

“Anytime one person’s down, it gives an opportunity for another one,” Saleh said Friday of his Week 14 backfield trio. “So it gives them all an opp.”

Perine, who ran for 232 yards and two touchdowns on 64 carries as a rookie, needs to seize whatever chance he gets in Week 14. That’s easier said than done considering he’s third in New York’s pecking order and facing a top-five run defense. The Saints allow just 96.4 rushing yards per game; every member of the Jets’ backfield will have trouble on Sunday.

Perine won’t be the Jets’ only 2020 draft pick looking to impress this weekend after a sophomore season of minimal usage. With New York thin at wide receiver, second-rounder Denzel Mims will also try to seize his latest opportunity.

Titans vs. Jets: Marcus Maye among 13 Week 4 inactives

Marcus Maye, A.J. Brown and Julio Jones headline the 13 players who won’t take part in Titans vs. Jets.

There are not any surprises among the Jets’ inactives for their Week 4 matchup with the Titans, as Marcus Maye, Elijah Moore and Jeff Smith are among the six players not suiting up for New York after being ruled out during the week.

Jamison Crowder is active for the first time this season after dealing with COVID and a groin injury, while Denzel Mims will play for the first time since Week 1 after spending the last two weeks as a healthy scratch. Tevin Coleman also returns after missing Week 3 with a non-COVID illness.

Tyler Kroft is active after being listed as questionable with a rib injury. Kroft was a full participant in practice on Friday.

Continue reading for the Jets’ full inactive list and a look at who won’t suit up for the Titans on Sunday afternoon.
