Jets sign Trevor Siemian to active roster, giving team three quarterbacks on 53

Jets sign Trevor Siemian to active roster, giving team three quarterbacks on 53

As expected, the Jets have signed quarterback Trevor Siemian the 53-man roster, giving the Jets three quarterbacks on the active roster: Tim Boyle, Siemian and Zach Wilson. The Jets opened a roster spot earlier this week by releasing (again) defensive tackle Tanzel Smart.

Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters Monday that Boyle would be the starting quarterback for Week 12 against the Miami Dolphins with Siemian as the direct backup. Saleh also said all three quarterbacks will be available, indicating that Wilson will be inactive on gameday but be designated as the emergency third quarterback, taking advantage of the new rule this season of letting a third quarterback be available for a game without having to count them against the 48-man gameday roster.

Siemian signed with the Jets’ practice squad on September 26, marking his second stint with the team. He was also with the team in 2019, starting one game for Sam Darnold, who had mononucleosis. Siemian suffered an ankle injury in that Week 2 Monday night game against the Browns and was replaced by Luke Falk.

The Jets also added cornerback Craig James to the practice squad. James started one game for the Jets this season against the Eagles when the team didn’t have Sauce Gardner or D.J. Reed due to concussions.

Jets sign Tanzel Smart to active roster, elevate two from practice squad for Week 11

Jets sign Tanzel Smart to active roster, elevate two from practice squad for Week 11

The Jets announced a few roster moves ahead of their Week 11 matchup with the Buffalo Bills, including bringing back a defensive lineman and calling up two from the practice squad.

The Jets signed defensive tackle Tanzel Smart to the 53-man roster, not long after the team waived Smart and brought him back on the practice squad. Smart has seen time in two games this season with one tackle.

The two players elevated from the practice squad this week are offensive lineman Jake Hanson and linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball.

Hanson joined the Jets’ practice squad on November 6. He played in 11 games — including one start — with the Green Bay Packers over the past two seasons. Hanson was drafted in the sixth round by the Packers in 2020. He’ll add extra depth on the interior for the Jets Sunday.

McCrary-Ball has been on the Jets’ practice squad since the end of August when the team began building their practice squad for the season after their initial 53-man roster was set. He spent the 2022 season and the 2023 offseason with the San Francisco 49ers. The former Indiana Hoosier signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2022. With Chazz Surratt and Sam Eguavoen both out for Sunday, McCrary-Ball will be the fifth linebacker and help on special teams.

Jets elevate OL Chris Glaser, sign DL Tanzel Smart to practice squad

Jets elevate OL Chris Glaser, sign DL Tanzel Smart to practice squad

The Jets have elevated offensive lineman Chris Glaser from the practice squad for Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Glaser will be the 8th offensive lineman for Sunday.

This is the second elevation from the practice squad for Glaser. The first was last week against the New England Patriots. A team can elevate and send a player back from the practice squad three times before having to sign him to the active roster.

The Jets also brought back defensive lineman Tanzel Smart on the practice squad. To make room, the Jets released kicker Austin Seibert. With Greg Zuerlein healthy, the Jets don’t need a second kicker on the roster. Seibert kicked in place of the injured Zuerlein in Week 2 against the Cowboys. He kicked a 34-yard field goal and converted an extra point.

Jets add Irv Charles to practice squad, release Tanzel Smart

Irv Charles back on the practice squad.

The Jets announced a practice squad move Wednesday. The team brought back wide receiver Irvin Charles and released defensive tackle Tanzel Smart to make room for him.

Charles was on the 53-man roster for Week 1 after the Jets initially kept seven wide receivers on the 53-man roster. However, he was inactive for the game against the Buffalo Bills.

The Jets would then waive Charles before Week 2 to make room for quarterback Tim Boyle. He is now back with the practice squad, giving the Jets a pair of wide receivers on the practice squad, along with Malik Taylor, to go with the six on the 53-man roster.

Smart was in his fourth season with the Jets, spending most of his time on the practice squad. He appeared in six games during his time with the Jets including three in 2022. Before coming to New York, Smart spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams.

6 Jets players to watch in preseason Week 1 vs. Panthers

Here are 6 players from the Jets to keep an eye on in Saturday’s preseason Week 1 matchup vs. the Panthers.

The New York Jets took part in the Hall of Fame Game against the Cleveland Browns to begin their preseason schedule, losing the game 21-16. Following last week’s preseason defeat to the Browns, the Jets will take on the Carolina Panthers on Saturday in their second preseason contest.

For the second straight week, New York isn’t going to have many of its starters logging snaps versus Carolina. With Aaron Rodgers in street clothes again, Zach Wilson is drawing the start and Tim Boyle will follow the former first-round pick.

Ahead of Saturday’s exhibition matchup with the Panthers, here are six players to watch on the Jets.

Jets sign Tanzel Smart to reserve/future contract

The New York Jets announced Tuesday they have signed defensive lineman Tanzel Smart to a reserve/future contract.

Smart has spent most of the past two seasons on the Jets’ practice squad and appeared in three games during the 2022 season. Smart just wrapped up his 6th season in the NFL after also spending time with the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills.

Smart’s signing comes one day after the Jets signed seven other players from their practice squad to reserve/future contracts, including quarterback Chris Streveler.

Players signed to reserve/future contract

  • QB Chris Streveler
  • OL Chris Glaser
  • CB Craig James
  • CB Jimmy Moreland

Jets sign Hamseh Nasirildeen to active roster, Will Parks to practice squad, Parks and Tanzel Smart get call-up

Some roster gymnastics before Week 15

The Jets played a little roster gymnastics Saturday before their Week 15 showdown against the Detroit Lions.

They have signed linebacker Hamseh Nasirildeen to the active roster and added safety Will Parks after Parks cleared waivers this week.

Parks and defensive lineman Tanzel Smart have been called up from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.

Sunday will be Nasirildeen’s fourth appearance with the active roster on game day this season.

This is the third and final time the Jets are able to elevate Smart from the practice squad. They’ll have to sign him to the active roster if they want to bring him back up.

Smart’s call-up is insurance policy in case Quinnen Williams — who is questionable with a calf injury after missing practice all week — cannot play.

Parks was waived earlier this week but the Jets had hoped to stash him on the practice squad if he was able to clear waivers, which is exactly what happened. Parks has played in 11 games for the Jets this season.

Jets elevate Tanzel Smart, Conor McDermott from practice squad for Sunday

Jets elevate Tanzel Smart, Conor McDermott from practice squad for Sunday

The Jets have called up two players from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Patriots. They have elevated DL Tanzel Smart and OL Conor McDermott.

Smart will make his first appearance on the active roster this season, having spent the entire season on the practice squad. With Sheldon Rankins out, Smart gives the Jets some depth at the defensive tackle position behind Quinnen Williams, Nathan Shepherd and Solomon Thomas.

McDermott has been elevated for the third consecutive game, and with this being his third elevation, the Jets have exhausted that option for McDermott moving forward. If they want to bring McDermott back up to the active roster, they will have to sign him to the 53-man roster. He has appeared in six games this season.

John Franklin-Myers praises fellow defensive lineman on the roster bubble

John Franklin-Myers had high praise for fellow defensive lineman Tanzel Smart. Smart is fighting for a roster spot this summer.

Tanzel Smart hasn’t made much of an on-field impact with the Jets, but he is influencing at least one teammate behind the scenes.

“He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen in my life,” John Franklin-Myers recently said on the “Take Flight Spittin’ Fire Podcast.” “He makes me work harder than I’ve ever worked since I’ve been here.”

Given the surplus of talent on the Jets’ defensive line, it is somewhat surprising to hear Franklin-Myers namedrop Smart, a player who saw just 26 total snaps last season. He recorded three total tackles in as many games.

Smart has been a journeyman since entering the league out of Tulane in 2017. He spent three seasons with the Rams before bouncing around to the Bills, Browns and Jets. He’s played in 509 total defesive snaps in his career, and 306 of those came in his rookie year.

While Smart is motivating Franklin-Myers, the former is no threat to the latter’s job. Franklin-Myers is a potential starter following a career year that included 19 total tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, 13 quarterback hits, two pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries in 15 games.

Smart, meanwhile, will need to go above and beyond this summer if he hopes to crack New York’s deep defensive line rotation.

Jets activate Bryce Hall, sign Mike White to active roster prior to kickoff vs. Patriots

The Jets activated Bryce Hall and signed Mike White to their active roster prior to playing the Patriots on Monday night.

Bryce Hall will make his NFL debut when the Jets host the Patriots at MetLife Stadium on Monday night.

New York activated Hall to the active roster prior to kickoff against New England. The Virginia product was designated to return to practice on Oct. 21 after he was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list at the beginning of the season as he worked his way back from a gruesome ankle injury suffered in his senior year. Hall also spent time on the COVID-19/reserve list at the beginning of training camp. His activation comes in wake of the Jets releasing Quincy Wilson earlier this week.

New York also signed Mike White to the active roster to serve as Joe Flacco’s backup with Sam Darnold doubtful to suit up after aggravating his previously injured shoulder against the Chiefs last weekend, placed Trevon Wesco on injured reserve and elevated Ross Travis and Tanzel Smart from the practice squad to its active roster.

Wesco injured his ankle in practice last week. Prior to going down, he served as the Jets’ primary fullback and blocking tight end in their first eight games. Travis spent training camp with New York after it claimed him on waivers last December, while Smart signed with Gang Green’s practice squad on Oct. 14. A sixth-round pick of the Rams in 2017, Smart has totaled 20 tackles in 31 career games.
