Lions sign LB Curtis Bolton, TE Jared Pinkney in flurry of roster moves

Curtis Bolton, Jared Pinkney and Jashon Cornell are now all on the 53-man roster after a plethora of moves on Tuesday

It was a very busy day on the NFL’s transaction wire on Tuesday around the league. The Detroit Lions contributed their fair share of roster moves to the log.

To sum it up briefly, the Lions:

Signed LB Curtis Bolton and TE Jared Pinkney to the active 53-man roster

Activated DE Jashon Cornell from the reserve/non-football injury list

Signed WR Juwan Green and TE Ross Travis to the practice squad

Placed LB Josh Woods on injured reserve

Placed TE Brock Wright on the reserve/COVID-19 list

Released CB Chris Williamson from the practice squad

Bolton comes up from the Lions’ own practice squad. He’s played over 30 snaps on special teams as a practice squad elevation the last two weeks. The inside backer will take the place of Woods, who started in Week 14 before getting hurt in the Week 15 matchup against Arizona. His season is over due to his neck injury.

Pinkney was signed off the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad to the active 53-man roster. He did spend three weeks in September on the Lions practice squad before emigrating to the Rams.

With Wright going on the reserve/COVID-19 list and the earlier move sending Shane Zylstra to the injured reserve, Pinkney is the only tight end on the active roster and projects to start against the Seahawks in Week 16. He is in his second NFL season as an undrafted free agent from Vanderbilt.

Perhaps the most eye-catching move is Cornell. A 2020 7th-round pick from Ohio State, Cornell has been on the field for just four snaps in two seasons. He’s battled injuries, a three-game NFL suspension and recently the lengthy stint on the NFI list. Cornell flashed quite a bit of pass-rush potential in the summer of 2021 when he was healthy.

Cardinals protect 3 players on practice squad for Week 7

TE Ross Travis, OL Danny Isidora and DL Jonathan Ledbetter are all unable to sign with other teams in Week 7.

The Arizona Cardinals begin to prepare for their Week 7 home game against the struggling Houston Texans. They will hit the practice field for the first time on Wednesday.

While the first injury report of the week has not yet come out, so we don’t know what the staus of a few players are, but we can see where the Cardinals have some concern, based on the players they protected this week on the practice squad.

On Tuesday’s NFL transactions report, it showed the Cardinals protected three players from being signed off the practice squad this week.

They protected defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter, tight end Ross Travis and offensive lineman Danny Isidora.

All three were elevated to the roster last week and played.

The Cardinals only have seven offensive linemen on the roster so they will need to elevate one to have eight active for the game.

Tight end Darrell Daniels has a hamstring injury, so Travis might be needed to fill the role of the team’s third tight end, while with Peters and Allen on the COVID list and Rashard Lawrence having injured his calf, Ledbetter might be needed again.

Teams can protect up to four players on the practice squad each week. We will see if they designate another player later in the week for protection.

Cardinals protect 4 players on practice squad in Week 4, including rookie S James Wiggins

Among the four players the Cardinals protected, one of is safety James Wiggins, drafted in the seventh round this year.

The Arizona Cardinals have elected to protect four practice squad players in Week 4, according to the NFL transaction report on Tuesday. Not included on this list is recently added cornerback Quinton Dunbar.

His signing did not become official until Wednesday after the Cardinals made their selections.

The four players they are protecting this week, keeping other teams from being able to sign them, are the following:

  • S Chris Banjo
  • T Eric Smith
  • TE Ross Travis
  • S James Wiggins

Banjo has been elevated to the active roster each of the last two weeks and likely will be again this week when the Cardinals take on the Rams. He is a core special teams player, and his presence is more important with the loss of safety Charles Washington, who was placed on injured reserve.

Smith’s protection is surely related to the injury of Kelvin Beachum. His availability is in doubt with a rib injury that kept him out of the last game and a half.

Wiggins might be elevated to replace Washington. Washington is one of the Cardinals’ gunners on the punt team. Wiggins got work as a punt gunner in training camp and in the preseason.

He was one of the Cardinals’ draft picks this year, getting selected in the seventh round out of Cincinnati.

Cardinals protect 4 on practice squad for Week 3, but not CB Rasul Douglas

CB Antonio Hamilton was protected for the third week in a row, but even with Marco Wilson’s availability unknown, CB Rasul Douglas was not protected.

The Arizona Cardinals have some injury concerns at cornerback in Week 3. Rookie corner Marco Wilson suffered an ankle injury in the first half of the Cardinals’ 34-33 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2 and he is considered day-to-day this week. He could miss the Cardinals’ Week 3 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road.

However, even with his status in the air, the Cardinals protected only one of their cornerbacks on the practice squad.

The NFL transactions list showed the Cardinals protected four players on the practice squad this week, making it so other teams are unable to sign them.

In Week 1 and Week 2, the Cardinals protected cornerbacks Antonio Hamilton and Rasul Douglas. In Week 3, Hamilton is protected but Douglas  is not. If there was any possibility he would be needed this week, he would have been.

The four players the Cardinals protected are:

  • S Chris Banjo
  • CB Antonio Hamilton
  • OL Sean Harlow
  • TE Ross Travis

Banjo and Hamilton were both elevated to the active roster for the game last week and Hamilton has been elevated both weeks. He has been a starting gunner on the punt team along with safety Charles Washington. He also replaced Wilson in the lineup after the injury.

Banjo played special teams only in Week 2.

The protection of Harlow is interesting, as it is the first time. Right tackle Kelvin Beachum is day-to-day with a rib injury, which means Justin Murray, who can play both tackle and guard, might start. Since teams must have eight linemen active for games, they might choose to elevate Harlow and keep tackle Josh Miles inactive.

Travis has now been protected two consecutive weeks.

Cardinals protect 3 on practice squad in Week 2

Other NFL teams will not be able to sign TE Ross Travis or CBs Rasul Douglas or Antonio Hamilton to their rosters this week.

The Arizona Cardinals can protect up to four players on their practice squad each week, preventing them from getting signed by another NFL team. As the Cardinals prepare for their Week 2 home opener against the Minnesota Vikings, they have protected three, according to the league’s transaction list on Tuesday.

The players are:

  • CB Rasul Douglas
  • CB Antonio Hamilton
  • TE Ross Travis

Protecting both cornerbacks is understandable. It is a position of concern. Hamilton was elevated to the 53-man roster for Week 1 and played on special teams. He was one of the team’s two gunners on the punt coverage team.

Douglas is a veteran they want to get acclimated to the defensive system in case rookie cornerback Marco Wilson struggles or veteran Robert Alford gets injured.

If receiver Antoine Wesley remains on the COVID reserve this week, Hamilton will likely get the elevation again.

The protection of Travis is interesting because they have three tight ends on the 53-man roster already.

It would suggest perhaps one of the team’s three tight ends on the roster might have an injury. Darrell Daniels was dealing with a toe injury previously.

The first injury report of the week will not come out until Wednesday afternoon.

Travis played in 131 career games at Penn State and averaged 6.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.3 blocks.

In two-plus seasons with the Chiefs, Travis had eight catches for 58 yards in 17 games.

After being released by the Chiefs, Travis was picked up by the Colts. Travis played in four games for the Colts in 2017 and had two catches for 22 yards. In 2018, Travis tore his ACL in the Colts’ last preseason game against the Bengals and was placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

In February 2019, Indianapolis re-signed Travis, but he failed to make the team coming out of training camp. The Colts brought Travis back in November, and he played in three games and recorded four catches for 51 yards. He was waived at the end of December.

The Jets claimed Travis the day after he was waived by the Colts. However, before the start of the 2020 season, the Jets released Travis and signed him to the practice squad. He appeared in the Jets’ Week 9 game against the Patriots and had three offensive snaps. Travis also had a stint on the practice squad/COVID-19 list.
