Michigan football lands in the top five for four-star safety

#Michigan makes another top group for an elite player! #GoBlue

Michigan football is garnering significant interest from big recruits around the country. The Wolverines recently learned they would host the top-ranked running back in the 2024 cycle among those coming to Ann Arbor for official visits in June.

On Tuesday, Michigan learned it had made the top five for four-star safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell when he took to Twitter. TCU, Texas, USC and Ohio State are the other four in Johnson-Rubell’s final five.

The 5-foot-10 safety plays his high school football at Bradenton (Florida) IMG Academy.

According to the 247Sports composite, Johnson-Rubell is the 118th-ranked recruit in the 2024 cycle, the ninth-ranked safety, and the 17th-ranked prospect in Florida.

It appears the Longhorns have the inside track at landing Johnson-Rubell. Texas has one crystal ball prediction on 247Sports for him. On3’s recruiting prediction machine gives Texas a 90.8% chance to land his services.

Here is Andrew Ivins’ scouting report on Johnson-Rubell on 247Sports:

A versatile defensive back that made key plays at key moments as a junior for IMG Academy, like his pick six against St. Frances Academy. Has been deployed primarily as a safety at the national powerhouse, but has some experience working at cornerback and has shown that he can be rather effective as a slot defender. Measured just under 5-foot-10, 165 pounds in spring of 2022. Might be on the smaller side, but plays bigger than the numbers suggest as he’s physical in the hole and comfortable carrying out tasks near the line of scrimmage. Looser hips allow him to mirror pass catchers of all different sizes while foot speed (clocked a laser-timed 4.6 in the 40-yard as an underclassman) helps him close gaps and get from hash to hash. Does a nice job of locating the football on deeper shots and will fight his way to the catch point on shorter routes. Should be viewed as a multi-year starter type of talent that can be utilized in a number of different ways. Will likely need some time before he’s ready to go on Saturdays, but range and instincts could lead to early playing time, especially if body keeps maturing.

No. 1 running back in 2024 locks in an official visit to Michigan

Big, big visit coming!

Michigan football may now have the No. 2 recruiting class in the 2024 cycle behind Georgia, but the Wolverines aren’t slowing their efforts and Michigan has momentum on the trail.

June is going to be a big recruiting month for the Wolverines. Several big-name recruits are visiting Ann Arbor every weekend in June, and another huge name is set to come to Michigan for an official visit.

Top-ranked running back Taylor Tatum, a four-star, plans to be in Ann Arbor on June 23 for an official visit. Tatum hails from Longview (Texas), and the 5-foot-10 running back is the No. 31 overall recruit, the No. 1 running back and No. 6 player in Texas on the 247Sports composite.

There is one crystal ball prediction for Tatum on 247Sports. It is from a Texas insider and predicts Tatum is headed for Michigan. The Wolverines have four-star RB Jordan Marshall committed in 2024, and Michigan recently had another crystal ball prediction for three-star RB Micah Kaapana.

During the June 23 weekend, Tatum will be joined by four-star linebacker Aaron Chiles, four-star edge Darien Mayo, four-star cornerbacks Jameer Grimsley and Terhyon Nichols among others.

Tatum announced he plans to visit USC (June 2) and Oklahoma (June 16) as his other two June official visits.

Huge 2024 five-star taking an official visit to Michigan football

June 9 weekend has officially gotten even bigger with this guy coming to Ann Arbor! #GoBlue

The month of June is going to be nuts for Michigan football with top-end talent taking official visits to Ann Arbor.

The top-ranked 2024 recruiting class continues to buzz and Michigan is sitting pretty with plenty of four-star and five-star talent. The Wolverines have one five-star currently committed to them in 2024, which is quarterback Jadyn Davis.

Michigan already has five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo taking an official visit on June 9. On Thursday, that weekend go much bigger for the Wolverines.

According to Adam Gorney with Rivals, 2024 five-star defensive lineman Justin Scott will also be headed to Ann Arbor on June 9 for an official visit. Scott locked in four official visits for the month of June which consists of Georgia, Michigan, Miami, and Ohio State.

According to 247Sports Composite rankings, the Chicago (Illinois) St. Ignatius product is the 13th-ranked prospect in 2024, the third-ranked defensive lineman in the nation, and the top-ranked recruit from Illinois. Entering his senior year of high school, Scott has the size to compete Day 1 in college standing 6-foot-4 and 310-pounds.

Allen Trieu with 247Sports gives his scouting report on the five-star.

Has prototypical size and athletic ability for the position. Bends well, gets off the ball quickly and can beat blockers with initial quickness. Closes to the ball with speed as well. For a taller interior defensive lineman, he generally does a good job with pad level and his flexibility helps with that. Not often challenged in high school with offensive linemen with similar size and talent. Will have to show he can disengage from Power Five level offensive linemen. Has great upside though and actually could play high-level offensive line if he wanted to also, but projects as a defensive tackle that can play for any school and in any scheme in the country.

Scott currently has two different Crystal Ball projections. One of them has him going to Miami and the other to Notre Dame.

Here are some of the names that will be joining Scott on the June 9 weekend to Michigan: five-star WR Ryan Wingo, four-star RB and Michigan commit Jordan Marshall, four-star OT Bennet Warren, four-star edge Elias Rudolph, four-star CB Ondre Evans, four-star edge Dominic Nicols, among others.

The four-star edge defender put #Michigan in his top five, and will visit the Wolverines in June.

It’s only May and Michigan currently has 17 commitments for the 2024 cycle and the maize and blue have plenty of other recruits that are either predicted to go to the Wolverines, or have high interest in Michigan. It appears the Wolverines aren’t slowing down anytime soon.

One of those players who has a big-time interest in Michigan is 2024 four-star edge defender, Elias Rudolph. On Sunday, he put the Wolverines in his top five with Penn State, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati.

Rudolph, who originally played high school football at Cincinnati (Ohio) Taft, is now finishing his senior season in Deerfield Beach (Florida). According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Rudolph is the 230th-ranked prospect in the country. He is the 20th-ranked edge defender and the 36th-best prospect in Florida. Rudolph has the size to compete at the next level standing at 6-foot-4 and 205-pounds.

Nice to make the early cut for a good quarterback! #GoBlue

Michigan appears to be in good hands when it comes to the quarterback position in the near future.

Of course, the Wolverines have J.J. McCarthy at the helm for at least this year and maybe next. If McCarthy enters the NFL draft after this season, Michigan has five-star Jadyn Davis coming in as a 2024 recruit who would have a chance to start next season.

Michigan football flips three-star Stanford defensive tackle

Nice flip! #GoBlue

The situation looked to be trending Michigan football’s way for three-star Cameron Brandt as national signing day approached.

Brandt had been committed to Stanford since July 22, but once Stanford coach David Shaw resigned after the season — the pendulum started to sway. In the past few days, crystal balls from 247Sports started coming in the Wolverines’ favor.

And that’s exactly what happened.

On Wednesday, the 6-foot-4, 260-pound senior decommitted from Stanford and signed with Michigan as part of the 2023 class.

Brandt hails from Chatsworth (California) Sierra Canyon High School. According to 247Sports, he is a four-star recruit. But according to their composite, he is the No. 453 recruit in the country and is a three-star.

Michigan football lands versatile athlete

Keep ’em coming! #GoBlue

Boy, does beating Ohio State have its perks.

Michigan football has landed three commitments from the state of Ohio in the three days since Nov. 25.

Monday is a new day but the same result. The Wolverines gained a commitment from 2023 three-star athlete Jason Hewlett. Hewlett is a Youngstown (Ohio) commit who can play various positions at the next level.

247Sports ranks Hewlett as a four-star prospect, but according to the composite rankings, Hewlett is a three-star and the 21st-ranked prospect in Ohio.

Allen Trieu, a national recruiting analyst with 247Sports, breaks down Hewlett’s game:

Has the size and experience at multiple positions to project in a variety of ways come college. Currently, the most likely projection is to defense as a hybrid safety-linebacker, but could grow into a full-time linebacker or EDGE. Also has the size and ball skills to potentially be a receiver or FLEX on offense. Striker on defense who shows that he can run through a ball carrier and hit with pop and explosion. Has a track background and can get moving and pursue well for a player of his size. Offensive tape and special teams return ability further speak to that and his overall athleticism. In college, the main piece for his development will be finding the right positional home and refining his skills at that spot. A generally raw prospect but talented with big upside.

The Ohio prospect decommitted from Cincinnati on Nov. 24. Hewlett chose Michigan over Kentucky.

Michigan has 19 commits in the class for 2023.
