Friday Night Notes: Dylan Raiola’s recruiting impact, Kentucky’s new QB commit, plus more

This week’s edition of Friday Night Notes will be all about the most important position in the game and three recruits who could soon be making a massive impact at the highest level of college competition.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

While there’s something to be said for building a complete football team, the quickest path to victory is and will always be quality quarterback play.

This week’s edition of Friday Night Notes will be all about the most important position in the game, with three recruits who could soon be making a massive impact at the highest level of college competition.

We begin in Athens, Georgia, where the reigning kings of NCAA football pulled off a stunning victory this week. On Monday, the No. 1 quarterback and top-overall recruit in the class of 2024 – Pinnacle (Ariz.) QB Dylan Raiola – announced his commitment to the Bulldogs.

Raiola (6-foot-3, 220 pounds) gives a team that’s dominated defensively the last two years one of the most talented QBs in the country. His impact will go beyond what he does on the field, though. With Raiola in the fold, Athens is even more so a hot destination for top-rated recruits.

The best name they could hope to bring in is five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who is committed to Ohio State, where Raiola had once been committed. If he can be convinced to follow Raiola, the Bulldogs will soon get No. 1 talents at the two most-critical offensive positions in the modern game.

Smith is far from the only playmaker who’d be interested in teaming with Raiola, of course. According to Adam Gorney at Rivals, Silsbee (Texas) four-star receiver Dre’Lon Miller, St. Louis University (Mo.) five-star wideout Ryan Wingo and 2025’s No. 1 ranked running back, Mater Dei’s Jordon Davison are all considering Georgia more closely now.

If Georgia can recruit all of them and keep their defense going at a respectable level, they’ll be in dynasty territory. You can read more about Raiola’s recruitment and Bulldogs football in general at UGA Wire.

Penn State in top 5 of 2025 QB making decision this week

Will Penn State get a big QB surprise on the recruiting trail this week?

James Franklin and his coaching staff have made it clear that they are looking to add quarterbacks in their 2024 class. Offensive coordinator is on the trail offering different quarterbacks across that class.

Even with that objective in mind, they are still actively looking ahead and trying to secure prospects in the class of 2025. Currently, they have three commitments from players in that class and sit at third in the national rankings according to the 247Sports database. There is no quarterback signed in that class as of now either, but there is a chance that could change this week.

After announcing his top 10 schools last week, four-star quarterback Cutter Boley dropped his list down to five and said he will be making his decision on May 18th.

After being included in the top 10, Penn State has also made it into his top five schools along with Kentucky, Michigan, Florida State and Tennessee.

Boley is a coveted prospect from Kentucky who On3’s industry rankings has as a top 40 prospect in the entire country for the 2025 class. He is a consensus top five quarterback in the class and Rivals has him ranked as their second best quarterback prospect.

Kentucky is the school that Boley has visited the most. He’s taken seven unofficial visits and has an official visit scheduled for June 9th this summer. He’s visited Tennessee six times, Michigan four times and Penn State twice on unofficial visits.

On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Kentucky a massive 95.3% chance to keep the coveted prospect in their state. Penn State is currently given a less than one percent chance.

Based on the timeline, it looks like Boley is going to commit to Kentucky on May 18th, however that doesn’t mean his recruitment is necessarily over. There is still a long way to go before Boley has to officially sign his National Letter of Intent.

He told On3, “I’m going to take some other official visits – probably to Penn State, Florida State, and maybe a few other ones.”

Penn State could still be in the running for this highly coveted prospect even if he commits to a different school this week.

Michigan football makes cut for 2025 4-star QB

Nice to make the early cut for a good quarterback! #GoBlue

Michigan appears to be in good hands when it comes to the quarterback position in the near future.

Of course, the Wolverines have J.J. McCarthy at the helm for at least this year and maybe next. If McCarthy enters the NFL draft after this season, Michigan has five-star Jadyn Davis coming in as a 2024 recruit who would have a chance to start next season.

It’s always important to find a good gun-slinger in every recruiting class and Michigan has a few it’s looking at in the 2025 class. The Wolverines are in the mix for five-star quarterbacks Bryce Underwood and George MacIntyre.

The Wolverines have also made the early cut for 2025 four-star QB Cutter Boley. He put Michigan in his top 10 on Friday among nine other schools.

Boley hails from Lexington (Kentucky) Lexington Christian Academy. He has great size, standing at 6 feet, 5 inches. On the 247Sports composite, he is the 72nd-ranked prospect and the sixth-best quarterback in 2025.

There is one crystal ball placed on Boley; it has him headed to Kentucky. But 247Sports indicates he has warm interest in Florida State, Kentucky and Penn State.

The No. 6 rated QB in the class of 2025 has his eyes on the Oregon Ducks.

When quarterback recruits pop into the news cycle, the ears of college football fans tend to perk up.

So even though Cutter Boley, a 4-star QB from Lexington, Kentucky, won’t be heading to college until 2025, it became newsworthy on Friday afternoon when he announced his top 10 schools, keeping the Oregon Ducks among those like Alabama, Michigan, Tennessee, and many others.

Boley is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 6 QB in the 2025 class, and the No. 72 overall player in the nation. He received an offer from Oregon last fall, but has yet to take a visit out to Eugene to see Dan Lanning and the Ducks.

As he continues his recruitment going into his junior season, we will likely see the 2025 passer find his way out west and see what Oregon has to offer.

Alabama Morning Drive: Recapping a busy weekend in recruiting

Alabama hosts yet another impressive weekend of official visits.

Good Monday morning, Tide fans! Welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone enjoyed their Father’s Day weekend and was able to spend some time with all the father figures in your life.

Despite it being a holiday weekend, [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and Alabama had a busy weekend when it comes to recruiting. Several of the nation’s top prospects were in town over the weekend for official visits. Coach Saban and the staff even took the time to extend some offers to prospects outside of the 2023 class.

Over the next few minutes, we will present you with some of the best tweets from several of the prospects over this past weekend.

Without wasting too much time let’s just dive right into the meat of the article.

Top Kentucky QB has ‘awesome’ experience at Clemson camp

Among the standout quarterbacks who had the chance to showcase their talent on the fourth day of Dabo Swinney Camp on June 11 was Cutter Boley — a 6-foot-5, 200-pound rising sophomore gunslinger from Lexington (KY.) Christian Academy.

“It was awesome,” Boley told The Clemson Insider regarding his camp experience. “I love working with Coach Streeter. His personality and the way he coaches is awesome. He’s very detailed, which I like. He’s not very vague and you can really tell that he knows what he’s talking about with everything he teaches. He’s been around the game a long time and he’s coached a lot of QBs.

What type of feedback did Boley get from Clemson’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach?

“A lot of good and then a lot of teaching points with my arm slot, my footwork and stuff like that,” Boley continued. “He was just saying that he loves me and that he loves my ball and he loves how I throw. He said that I’m still young, that I have time to develop and there’s some things I need to work on.”

Boley was appreciative that he was able to take away some things from his time at Clemson. He wants the camp experience to be fun but also wants there to be a level of learning and understanding of how to become a better quarterback. And for that, he’s grateful that Streeter was more of a teacher and less of an evaluator.

For Boley, it wasn’t just Streeter’s teaching methods that stood out. He was also impressed with how the rest of Clemson’s coaching staff conducted themselves during this past Saturday’s camp.

“All the coaches really, just the people around the program,” he said. “All the coaches, no two of them are saying different things. Everybody is saying the same thing and everybody has the same goal in mind. Everybody has that championship mentality, which is awesome and I love.  They all strive to be the best. There’s no coming second there.”

Shortly after he participated in both the morning and afternoon sessions of Saturday’s Swinney Camp, Boley made his way to Virginia Tech for an unofficial visit, where he picked up his latest offer.

He told us that he will be camping at the University of Michigan on Wednesday and this weekend he’ll travel to both Florida and Florida State. Next weekend, he’ll be at the University of Alabama and Tennessee.

For Boley this summer was about camping at and visiting schools that have shown interest in him. He wasn’t going to go anywhere that he didn’t have contact with. He went to or will go to all the schools that he felt like were really interested in him.

“This summer is just a summer to get out there and show schools that I can throw and what I can do,” he said. “And then, next summer will be more of where I’m interested in, just narrowing it down a little bit.”

While Clemson isn’t a school that’s offered him — the Tigers don’t typically offer rising sophomores — Boley figures that Dabo Swinney’s program will certainly play a role in his recruitment going forward.

“That’s definitely going to be a school until the end that I’ll consider going to and I’ll always have strong feelings for,” Boley said.

What would a Clemson offer down the road mean for Boley and his recruitment?

“It would mean a lot,” he said. “Getting an offer from a school that I’ve grown up watching and Clemson’s always been one of those four or five schools that you consider one of the top football schools in the nation; Clemson’s always been in that group. Getting an offer from them would be unreal.”

Boley imagines that he’ll be back for a game-day visit sometime this fall.
