Panthers cut Eric Rowe, add local defender to practice squad

The Panthers have swapped safeties on their practice squad, releasing Eric Rowe and signing Charlotte native Matthias Farley.

The Carolina Panthers announced more than just the Shaq Thompson news on Tuesday afternoon.

Along with placing the ninth-year linebacker on injured reserve, the team officially made a change to their practice squad by swapping out a couple of safeties. In is 31-year-old Matthias Farley and out is veteran Eric Rowe.

Rowe signed with the Panthers on a one-year deal this spring. Prior to what would be a short stint in Carolina, the former second-round pick chalked up eight NFL seasons between the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder went on to play in all three of Carolina’s preseason contests this summer, totaling 99 defensive snaps out of the secondary. He would later be cut during the team’s jump to their initial 53-man roster and was then signed back to the practice squad shortly after.

Taking his spot will be Farley, a Charlotte native. He has played seven NFL seasons, making 18 starts in 100 games.

Notre Dame’s top 25 3-star recruits since 2010

Just because someone is a three-star doesn’t mean they can’t be great.

In the world of recruiting, rankings clearly matter. It’s no shock that when you look at the best teams nationally, they’re the ones who usually ranked the highest in team recruiting rankings during the previous three or four years.  Maybe the top team doesn’t always have the top class, but you can bet they’re in or right there with the top-five nationally.

Another key part of recruiting comes to finding those diamonds in the rough.  That isn’t to knock three-star talents, but the hype around them clearly isn’t the same when a five-star prospect visits campus or commits to a program.

We decided to go back and rank the top three-star players Notre Dame brought to campus dating to the start of Brian Kelly’s run at Notre Dame that began with the 2010 recruiting class. Here are the top 25 of those such players in the last roughly dozen years.

The 247Sports composite was used in each player’s star rating for this piece.

Raiders sign S Matthias Farley off practice squad, waive S Isaiah Pola-Mao

Raiders have waived S Isaiah Pola-Mao and signed S Matthias Farley off the practice squad

After elevating safety Matthias Farley from the practice squad in each of the first three games this season, the Raiders finally made it official. They have signed Farley to the active roster.

In a corresponding move, they have waived safety Isaiah Pola-Mao who had made the team out of camp as an undrafted free agent out of USC.

Farley has been a special teams maven for much of his eight-year career. He originally made the Colts roster as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and spent four seasons in Indianapolis, appearing in 37 games and starting 16 on defense.

Since then, he played two seasons with the New York Jets and the 2021 season with the Titans where he appeared in all 17 games and tied for the team lead with 11 special teams tackles.

In two appearances this season for the Raiders, Farley has played 52 special teams snaps and four defensive snaps, accumulating one tackle.

Raiders sign veteran safety Matthias Farley

Raiders add veteran safety and special teams maven

With day one of camp in the books, the Raiders made another roster move. They have signed safety Matthias Farley.

The veteran safety is entering his seventh NFL season. He spent last season with the Titans, playing mostly on special teams where he led the team with 11 tackles.

Prior to his season in Tennessee, he spent two season with the Jets and three seasons with the Colts.

The 5-11, 209-pounder’s best season came in 2017 with the Colts when he started 15 games, made 98 tackles, with two interceptions and seven pass breakups. He’s played almost exclusively on special teams in the four seasons since then, starting just three games on defense.

Titans have pair of former Cardinals on roster

This was supposed to be a reunion game for CB Malcolm Butler. However, the Titans have two former Cardinals on their roster.

The Arizona Cardinals open the season Sunday against the Tennessee Titans on the road. It was supposed to be a reunion game for cornerback Malcolm Butler. He played the last three seasons for the Titans and then signed with the Cardinals after he was cut.

However, Butler will not get that reunion game because he suddenly retired before the season started.

The Cardinals have no other former Titans on their roster, but the Titans have a pair of Cardinals on theirs.

Brant Boyer: ‘I’m pretty damn lucky’ to be on third Jets coaching staff

The Jets special teams coordinator is on his third head coach after outlasting Todd Bowles and Adam Gase in New York.

When special teams coordinator Brant Boyer heard the Jets hired Robert Saleh to replace Adam Gase, he immediately flew home in the middle of a fishing trip in Nevada to meet the new boss and sell himself.

Boyer had already survived Todd Bowles’ firing in 2018 when Adam Gase retained him. But it wasn’t clear if Saleh would keep Boyer for his sixth season in New York.

“I think I’m pretty damn lucky,” Boyer said Friday. “The coaching staff’s been awesome. Saleh is full of energy. He’s smart as heck and he’s really detailed. I’ve really, really enjoyed all these guys so far.”

Boyer’s special teams units remained solid through the tumultuous eras of Bowles and Gase. New York ranked first and fourth in special teams DVOA in 2018 and 2019, respectively, per Football Outsiders. The Jets ranked 30th in special teams in 2020 – but every position group on the Jets played horrifically in Gase’s final season.

This season will be a little different for Boyer because of the personnel changes. He lost special teams stalwarts like Mattias Farley and Carlos Basham but added veterans Justin Hardee and Sharrod Neasman. Plus he has a plethora of athletic rookies with special teams experience. Boyer was especially excited when the Jets signed Hardee as their go-to gunner.

“It’s certainly a change with the personnel and things like,” Boyer said, “but that’s part of, you know, being a coach and learning different personalities as far as the players and molding them into what you want.”

What Titans S Matthias Farley said in first Zoom presser

Farley already has a few connections to the Titans.

For the first time since signing with the Tennessee Titans, veteran safety Matthias Farley met with the media via a Zoom call on Tuesday.

Farley has been inked to a one-year deal worth up to $1.09 million and he carries a 2021 cap hit of just $975,000.

As far as his role is concerned, Farley, who was a captain with the New York Jets in 2020 and also spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, is expected to provide depth at safety and should have a big role on special teams.

Here’s a look at what Farley had to say when he met the media:

Tennessee Titans agree to terms with S Matthias Farley

Farley will serve as depth and contribute on special teams.

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with safety and special teams ace Matthias Farley, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Farley, who went undrafted out of Notre Dame, has played with the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets during his five year career, spending three seasons with the former and the last two with the latter.

Farley has been primarily a backup during his career and has done most of his work on special teams. He’s had one season as a full-time starter, which came with the Colts back in 2017, his second season.

In 2020, the 28-year-old was named one of the Jets’ team captains and played in 16 games (two starts), leading them in special teams tackles with eight.

For the Titans, Farley figures to continue to do most of his work on special teams, while also serving as depth behind safeties Kevin Byard and Amani Hooker in 2021.

Fellow safety, Dane Cruikshank, is under contract for next season and will likely battle it out with Farley for the right to be the primary backup.
