Jaguars waive 4 players, sign 3 in addition to WR Willie Johnson IV

In addition to signing Willlie Johnson IV, the Jags announced that they signed three other tryout players in TE Naz Bohannon and receivers Marvin Hall and Ryan McDaniel.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made some post rookie minicamp roster moves by waiving four players in receivers Terry Godwin and Josh Hammond, offensive lineman Marcus Tatum, and safety Sean Mahone. These moves came after the team announced that they signed four rookie minicamp tryout players in tight end Naz Bohannon and receivers Willie Johnson IV, Marvin Hall, and Ryan McDaniel.

Johnson’s signing was reported yesterday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. However, the signings of Bohannon, Hall, and McDaniel were announced by the team.

Bohannon joined the Jags this weekend for rookie minicamp after spending 2021 on Clemson’s basketball team. The 6-feet-5, 232-pound forward also played basketball for Youngstown State the four years prior to his time at Clemson and accumulated 1,425 points and 1,124 rebounds throughout his college tenure.

Hall, who attended the University of Washington, is a veteran player who has been in the NFL since 2016. He initially entered the NFL as an undrafted player for the Oakland Raiders and has made various stops since that time. Hall has taken the field for 47 games throughout his NFL career and those games came through stints with the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, and Detroit Lions. He will enter his tenure with the Jags with 38 career catches for 782 yards and five touchdowns.

McDaniel, who went undrafted this offseason, played for North Carolina Central from 2018-21. He finished his career there with 100 catches for 1,208 yards. His career-high came in 2021 when he accumulated 52 receptions for 680 yards. His 2021 season also came with a MEAC Offensive Player of the Week award during Week 4 of his last collegiate season as he hauled in nine catches for 178 yards against North Carolina A&T.

With these new additions, the Jags now have 13 receivers on the roster and seven tight ends.

4 wide receivers the Rams should consider signing to add depth

The Rams are thin at wide receiver and they could some depth at the position for the rest of the season. Here are four options.

Fans of the Los Angeles Rams are still raving about the acquisition of Von Miller from the Denver Broncos ahead of the trade deadline. Miller joins a defense that already features the likes of Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, and Leonard Floyd — among others.

With Miller arriving in Los Angeles, the Rams now have a deep group of edge rushers to deploy. On the other side of the ball, Los Angeles is now thin at wide receiver due to the release of DeSean Jackson and Tutu Atwell being placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Van Jefferson make up one of the best trios in the NFL, but behind them, rookie Ben Skowronek is the only other wide receiver on the active roster. Taking that into consideration, I’d expect the Rams to add some depth at the wide receiver position soon.

The trade deadline has passed, so Los Angeles would need to either sign someone from its practice squad or could elect to search free agency for a depth piece. With an obvious need out wide, here are four receivers the Rams should consider signing to give them depth for the rest of the season.

Lions rank near the top of the NFL in dropped passes

The running backs all own drop rates over 8.5 percent

[jwplayer RqVahnVr-ThvAeFxT]

Dropped passes are a subjective statistic across different platforms. It’s not an official stat kept by the NFL. But in any metric or measurement, the Detroit Lions rank near the worst in the league in drops by receivers.

At NBC Sports, the Lions are second with 21 drops. Pro Football Focus has the Lions with 29. Those statistics are charitable across the board compared to Pro Football Reference, which tends to be the standard statistical book of record.

The Lions have 31 dropped passes per PFR, second only to Pittsburgh (37). The drop rate of 6.6 percent is also second-worst in the league, again to the Steelers (7.0).

The leading culprit, in terms of drop rate, is running back Adrian Peterson. He’s got three drops on 18 targets for a rate of 16.7 percent. Marvin Hall logged four drops on 30 targets, part of the reason why the Lions dumped him recently. T.J. Hockenson has the most drops with seven, though his volume of targets makes the tight end have a lesser drop rate than RBs Kerryon Johnson and D’Andre Swift and WR Quintez Cephus.

For a point of comparison for Hockenson, Steelers TE Eric Ebron also has seven drops but owns a higher drop rate of 8.4 because he has fewer targets. Pittsburgh’s Diontae Johnson leads the NFL with 12 drops, followed by Buffalo’s Stefon Diggs, Giants TE Evan Engram and Seattle’s Tyler Lockett with eight apiece.

Marvin Hall claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns

Hall joins a Browns team that has struggled with injuries at WR

Marvin Hall won’t have to travel far to his next NFL home. Two days after the Detroit Lions cut the veteran wide receiver, Hall was claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns.

Hall will join the Browns once his COVID-19 protocols are completed.

The Lions opted to go in a different direction at wide receiver, dumping Hall with five games left on his expiring contract. He was the fastest wideout on the Lions but offered little more than a vertical threat as a route runner. His body-catching style, ineffective blocking and lack of special teams usage hurt his cause to stay in Detroit.

Cleveland has had some injury issues at wide receiver and can use Hall’s field-stretching ability. They relied on practice squad call-up Ja’Marcus Bradley to play as the No. 4 receiver in their win over the Titans on Sunday

Browns claim WR Marvin Hall off waivers from Lions

Browns claim WR Marvin Hall off waivers from Lions

On Tuesday afternoon, the Cleveland Browns bolstered the team’s wide receiver ranks by adding veteran Marvin Hall off waivers from the Detroit Lions.

The Browns will receive a roster exemption for Hall that will expire once he’s permitted to join the team in accordance with testing protocols. He won’t count against the active roster limit until that time.

Hall, 27, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2016, joining the Oakland Raiders, where he was waived before the start of the season. The former Washington Huskie is very well known for being a field stretcher, with a reported blazing fast 4.28 40 yard dash at his pro day.

He was able to flash that speed with the Falcons in 2017, catching this 40-yard touchdown from Matt Ryan in his debut for the team.

He didn’t see much action until 2020 when with the Detroit Lions, where he was able to have a breakout performance of 4 catches for 113 yards against the Indianapolis Colts.

As for his impact on the Browns, it could be one that translates quickly. Since losing wide receiver Odell Beckham in Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals, quarterback Baker Mayfield has completed seven passes for 25 yards or more in the five games after the injury.

Hall provides a true speed threat down the field for Mayfield, who has shown a willingness to throw to anyone across the field, with names like KhaDarel Hodge and Breshad Perriman finding success under the young signal-caller.

Similar to Perriman, who also was known for his speed coming out of college, Hall has had some issues catching the ball in 2020, dropping four passes, but it is worth noting that in his combined 25 games in 2018 and 2019, he did not record a drop on 30 targets.

Adding a player like Hall is just what the doctor ordered for head coach Kevin Stefanski, who can add Hall to his arsenal on offense, as well as open things up for the running game by taking the attention of safeties with his vertical threat.

While it is early, this looks like another solid bet by general manager Andrew Berry to bolster the roster as the team continues to move towards a playoff push.

Lions activate Darryl Roberts from IR, sign Frank Herron, and release Marvin Hall, Isaac Nauta

The Detroit Lions have activated CB Darryl Roberts from IR, signed DT Frank Herron, and released WR Marvin Hall, TE Isaac Nauta on Saturday.

The Detroit Lions announced a series of roster moves Saturday, activating cornerback Darryl Roberts from injured reserve, re-signing defensive tackle Frank Herron (who was previously on the practice squad), confirming the previously reported release of wide receiver Marvin Hall as well as releasing tight end Isaac Nauta.

Additionally, the Lions have elevated undrafted rookie safety Bobby Price to the active roster for Week 13. Assuming he is active — if only for special teams purposes — Price will be making his NFL debut on Sunday.

Roberts was injured in the Lions’ Week 8 game versus the Indianapolis Colts, was placed on injured reserve, and began practicing this week. During his seven games played in 2020, Roberts started one game — Week 4 versus the New Orleans Saints — accounted for 20 tackles, one interception, and three pass breakups.

Capable of playing in the slot and on the outside, Roberts is returning to the field at just the right time, as the Lions lost Desmond Trufant to IR earlier in the week and Jeff Okudah was ruled OUT on Friday.

The Lions will enter this game with Amani Oruwariye and Justin Coleman starting, but when they shift to a base nickel, it will likely be Roberts who takes the field. Mike Ford — who recently cleared concussion protocols — will likely act as the Lions’ fourth option.

Herron has been on the Lions practice squad most of the season but was elevated to the active roster twice in Weeks 10 and 11. Having exhausted his elevation eligibility, the only way the Lions could get him back on the field this season was to sign him to the active roster.

With Danny Shelton placed on IR earlier in the week, and Da’Shawn Hand ruled OUT on Friday the Lions need Herron for depth, despite also signing Kevin Strong to the active roster earlier in the week.

The Lions will likely start Nick Williams at the 3T and John Penisini at nose tackle, with Herron and Strong backing up both spots.

Last night, it was reported that the Lions were planning on releasing Hall in order to make room for younger players on the roster and that likely means more playing time for Quintez Cephus — potentially even a starting role while Kenny Golladay remains out.

Nauta is being released in favor of Hunter Bryant for the second time this season, the other happening at roster cutdowns. With other areas of the roster needing attention, the Lions could not afford to keep a fourth tight end at this time and the team clearly prefers the talented undrafted rookie as the third option.

Price being elevated likely covers the Lions in two areas. First, he’s a highly athletic young player they will get a chance to get an extended look at in order to determine his long-term potential. Second, he will give the Lions special teams depth as safety, as Tracy Walker is questionable for this game. Walker’s wife Bella just delivered the couple’s first child, and Lions historically allow their player’s paternity leave.

Report: Lions will waive WR Marvin Hall

A report from Mike Garafolo of NFL.com indicates the Lions are going to waive WR Marvin Hall

A report from Mike Garafolo of NFL.com indicates that the Detroit Lions are planning to waive speedy reserve wide receiver Marvin Hall.

It’s an interesting surprise to dump Hall with just five games left in the season. The 27-year-old is playing out an expiring contract with the Lions and Hall has started the last four games while starters Kenny Golladay and Danny Amendola have dealt with injuries.

Hall is known for his field-stretching speed, a dynamic no other Lions wideouts bring. He has 17 catches for 290 yards and two TDs on the season, his second in Detroit. He also spent two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.

Garafolo indicates the team wants to see what it has in younger talents. That would indicate more opportunities for rookie Quintez Cephus and CB convert Jamal Agnew. The team also has Victor Bolden and Tom Kennedy on the practice squad. All are 25 or younger.

Detroit Lions Week 12 injury designations: Kenny Golladay OUT, D’Andre Swift Questionable

The Detroit Lions have declared the injury designations for their Week 12 Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Houston Texans.

The Detroit Lions (4-6) have declared the injury designations for their Week 12 Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Houston Texans (3-7), and six players have been ruled out including starting wide receivers Kenny Golladay and Danny Amendola.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ full injury report, with the updated changes in injury status listed in bold.

Injured reserve

Vaitai was added to injured reserve earlier today and he will be unable to play until after Week 14 at the earliest. As we have seen with the players listed above, eligibility does not necessarily mean a player will return on time.

Golladay’s contract season is beginning to look like a lost one, as he is inactive yet again, making this his sixth game missed on the season — he has only partially played in five.

Golladay isn’t the only starting receiver out as Amendola will miss his second week in a row. Based on last week’s depth chart, Marvin Hall will likely take on Golladay’s starting role, while Jamal Agnew will rep in Amendola’s place. This also further explains the move to add Mohamad Sanu to the active roster earlier today.

Hand and Bryant will also be missing their second consecutive game, and practice squad defensive tackle Albert Huggins has been elevated to the active roster to give back end depth.

Dee Virgin was also elevated to the active roster. He will give the Lions depth at corner and will almost assuredly take over Ford’s starting gunner position. With Ford and Oruwariye OUT, the Lions only have four cornerbacks available on the active roster this week: Desmond Trufant, Justin Coleman, Amani Oruwariye (who is injured and listed as questionable), and Virgin.

Swift has now completed one non-contact and one practice with contact and will just need to receive medical clearance from an independent doctor outside of Allen Park in order to be cleared of his concussion. If he passes this final stage of the league’s protocol, he would be available to play on Thursday.

Ragland has been limited all week after injuring his ankle last Sunday, but signs point towards him being available as well.

Oruwariye being added to the injury report the day before a game is not ideal. It’s unclear if he injured his back today or earlier in the week, but the fact that he is listed as Questionable instead of OUT is a positive sign. He looks like he may be headed for a game-time decision tomorrow.

Detroit Lions Week 12 Tuesday injury report: D’Andre Swift returns, Kenny Golladay downgraded

Examining the Detroit Lions injury report ahead of their Week 12 match up with the Houston Texans on Thanksgiving.

The Detroit Lions (4-6) held a walk-through practice as they prepare for a Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Houston Texans (3-7). Tuesday offered another set of estimated practice results as they only performed a walk-through, but it was full of both good and bad news.

Good news: D’Andre Swift returned to a limited practice and has a chance to play on Sunday if he continues to progress through the league’s concussion protocol. Bad News: Kenny Golladay was downgraded to no practice and appears unlikely to play.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ full injury report, with the updated changes in injury status listed in bold.

For the second week in a row, Golladay was a mid-week downgrade on the injury report. Things are not looking good for his chance of playing on Thursday.

Hand and Okudah being listed as estimated non-participants is not good news for their availability, as it is an indicator that trainers are not seeing improvements in their injuries.

Ford not being listed as a participant in any capacity means he will not be able to clear the league’s concussion protocols and will miss this week’s game. The Lions will once again be on the hunt to find a new starting gunner.

Swift and Amendola were upgraded today, improving their chances of being available on Thursday.

Swift being listed as limited means he is progressing through the league’s protocols and likely only has two steps remaining in order to be cleared to play: 1) get in practice with contact on Wednesday; 2) be medically cleared by an independent doctor — which could also happen ahead of Thursday.

Everyone else appears to be on the right track to play this week. The only note on the remaining players listed here is on Vaitai, as it’s not clear if he was benched last week or if it was injury-related.

At his Tuesday press conference, coach Matt Patricia said Vaitai “is out there battling every day, and I think he’s pushing through some things that have restricted him a little bit.” Which didn’t really clarify what happened with Vaitai last Sunday.

Detroit Lions Week 12 injury report: 16 players estimated as injured

Examining the Detroit Lions injury report ahead of their Week 12 match up with the Houston Texans on Thanksgiving.

The Detroit Lions (4-6) are preparing to host the Houston Texans (3-7) for their annual Thanksgiving day game, and because it’s a Thursday game, the team injury reports will be released on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week.

After yesterday’s game, the Lions did not hold a full practice today, so the injuries listed are best guesses from coaches and not based on today’s performances.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ full injury report, with the updated changes in injury status listed in bold.

Player Injury Monday Tuesday Wednesday Designation
D’Andre Swift Concussion No Practice*

Da’Shawn Hand Groin No Practice*
Jeff Okudah Shoulder No Practice*
Mike Ford Concussion No Practice*

Swift is still in the league’s concussion protocol and it’s not exactly clear how far along he is. If he were able to pass a workout regimen, then he would still have to make it through Tuesday’s practice in a non-contact capacity, then through Wednesday’s practice as a full-contact player. He would then have to be medically cleared by an independent doctor to be available for Thursday’s game.

Amendola missed all of last week with a hip injury and after being estimated as unlikely to have practiced today does not bode well for his availability on Thursday. It’s still early but not off to a great start.

Hand’s health is headed in the wrong direction. After being added to the injury report in the middle of last week, Hand looked like he had a chance to play on Sunday. Unfortunately, he was downgraded on Saturday and is now estimated to not have practiced today as well. Not a great start to the week.

Okudah was injured in yesterday’s game and was forced to leave the contest early. He has shown the ability to bounce back quickly from other injuries this year, but a short week complicates things.

Ford is in the same boat as Swift and will need to pass through all of the league’s protocols on a short week. He was also injured in yesterday’s game during a special teams play.

Stafford, Hockenson, Vaitai, Davis, and Jones were all on the injury report last week but were able to play last Sunday. Vaitai was the only one in this group that left the game early, but it’s unclear if this was injury-related or a benching.

Golladay and Bryant are being upgraded in this estimated scenario, which is very positive news for their progress. If Golladay is able to play on Thursday, it would be a massive upgrade for the Lions’ offense.

Hall, Jackson, Ragland, and Harris are all new additions to the injury report. The fact that they were listed as listed instead of did not practice is a good sign for their availability.
