Jaguars cut ties with WR Willie Johnson IV

Willie Johnson IV, who spent his rookie year in 2022 on the Jaguars’ injured reserve, was released Wednesday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released wide receiver Willie Johnson IV on Wednesday with a failed physical designation, per the NFL’s transaction wire.

Johnson signed with the Jaguars after impressing at a rookie minicamp tryout last year. In preseason, Johnson caught three passes for 53 yards, but was waived/injured at the end of August and reverted to the injured reserve when he wasn’t claimed by another team.

The nature of the injury, which is presumably the reason for the failed physical, was never disclosed by the Jaguars.

Jacksonville has a suddenly crowded wide receivers room after spending big last year to acquire Christian Kirk and Zay Jones before trading for Calvin Ridley in October.

Additionally, the Jaguars have Pro Bowl returner Jamal Agnew at the position and several young and relatively unproven players, including Tim Jones and Kevin Austin Jr.

Johnson caught 74 passes for 1,351 yards and nine touchdowns in four seasons at Marshall, and also added two rushing touchdowns.

Postgame analysis: Jags start preseason with a 27-11 loss to Raiders

The #Jaguars fell to the Raiders Thursday in the Hall of Fame Game as the offense couldn’t really get much going. However, Travon Walker did flash.

If there is one thing fans learned about the Jacksonville Jaguars in their preseason debut for 2022, it’s that a lot of work has to be done. Simply put, the team couldn’t get much offense going and that resulted in them enduring a 27-11 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

With the 2022 Hall of Fame Game serving as an extra preseason game, the Jags sat over 20 players and it put them in a situation where they were especially without their top offensive players. That reflected in the team’s inability to score in the first half as Las Vegas had a 20-0 lead at halftime.

That said, this game was one for the Jags’ younger players. That didn’t mean starters were completely excluded though, as the Jags are set to start several players under 25 years of age. One of them is center Luke Fortner, who saw extensive playing time and had some good moments in the process.

As for the defense, quarterback Jarrett Stidham made plays against the unit that even briefly trotted some starters out early in the game. The young quarterback moved the ball well enough to exit the first two quarters with 20 points by utilizing players like running backs Josh Jacobs, Ameer Abdullah, and Zamir White. Of the three, White had the highest rushing total ending the game with 11 carries for 52 yards.

However, White wasn’t the only Georgia Bulldog showing up in the first half. No. 1 pick and Jags OLB Travon Walker was all over the field and started the game with a rep where he pressured Stidham after bull-rushing offensive tackle Brandon Parker. Unfortunately, Walker was penalized in that play as the official believed Stidham was hit in an illegal area up high. In the next series, Walker sacked Stidham and showcased why he was the first player selected off the draft board in April.

To start the second half, the Jags’ defensive unit played better, holding the Raiders to a scoreless quarter to begin it. But unfortunately, the offense, which was led by quarterback Kyle Sloter in the process, could only come away with three points.

In the drive they were able to score, the player that led them along the way was running back Mekhi Sargent, who touched the ball five times in that drive. Overall, he finished the game with five carries for 22 yards and five receptions for 37 yards.

Sargent came into Thursday’s game as a relatively unknown player, but after showing off his versatility, he helped his chances to make the roster. He still may have to battle Ryquell Armstead for the RB4 role, but another performance like the one he had on Thursday could give him the lead in the race, and it will be interesting to see if he capitalizes on the momentum.

Then lastly, late in the fourth quarter, Sloter was finally able to throw a touchdown pass to put the score at its final state of 27-11. That pass went to running back Nathan Cottrell, which concluded a nine-play drive that was the Jags’ second to last. In that particular drive, receiver Willie Johnson made a few positive plays, bringing in his only two passes of the night in the process. He also had an eight-yard rush on a jet sweep and finished the night with 41 receiving yards.

Overall, it wasn’t just a night where the team couldn’t do much offensively, but one where they had a lot of mistakes like crucial penalties. For example, Johnson returned a punt for a touchdown in the second half, but it came back because of a holding call from defensive back Ayo Oyelola.

That said, Jags coach Doug Pederson said the team will work on eliminating the mistakes they made Thursday heading forward. He also said he will play more starters next week as their game against Cleveland on Aug. 12 will be four days away from the first wave of training camp roster cuts.

Jaguars waive 4 players, sign 3 in addition to WR Willie Johnson IV

In addition to signing Willlie Johnson IV, the Jags announced that they signed three other tryout players in TE Naz Bohannon and receivers Marvin Hall and Ryan McDaniel.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made some post rookie minicamp roster moves by waiving four players in receivers Terry Godwin and Josh Hammond, offensive lineman Marcus Tatum, and safety Sean Mahone. These moves came after the team announced that they signed four rookie minicamp tryout players in tight end Naz Bohannon and receivers Willie Johnson IV, Marvin Hall, and Ryan McDaniel.

Johnson’s signing was reported yesterday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. However, the signings of Bohannon, Hall, and McDaniel were announced by the team.

Bohannon joined the Jags this weekend for rookie minicamp after spending 2021 on Clemson’s basketball team. The 6-feet-5, 232-pound forward also played basketball for Youngstown State the four years prior to his time at Clemson and accumulated 1,425 points and 1,124 rebounds throughout his college tenure.

Hall, who attended the University of Washington, is a veteran player who has been in the NFL since 2016. He initially entered the NFL as an undrafted player for the Oakland Raiders and has made various stops since that time. Hall has taken the field for 47 games throughout his NFL career and those games came through stints with the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, and Detroit Lions. He will enter his tenure with the Jags with 38 career catches for 782 yards and five touchdowns.

McDaniel, who went undrafted this offseason, played for North Carolina Central from 2018-21. He finished his career there with 100 catches for 1,208 yards. His career-high came in 2021 when he accumulated 52 receptions for 680 yards. His 2021 season also came with a MEAC Offensive Player of the Week award during Week 4 of his last collegiate season as he hauled in nine catches for 178 yards against North Carolina A&T.

With these new additions, the Jags now have 13 receivers on the roster and seven tight ends.

Marshall WR Willie Johnson IV signing with Jags after rookie minicamp tryout

The Jaguars signed a minicamp tryout player to their roster last year in Laquon Treadwell and will repeat that trend this year with Willie Johnson IV.

The Jacksonville Jaguars receivers room got a little bigger on Sunday. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team signed undrafted Marshall receiver and returner Willie Johnson IV, who joined them as a tryout player for this weekend’s rookie minicamp.

Johnson had a career year in terms of receiving yards with the Herd in 2021, accumulating 32 catches for 625 yards and three touchdowns. He ultimately finished his career with 114 catches for 1,846 yards and 13 touchdowns.

As a returner, Johnson accumulated 22 kick returns for 492 yards and had 19 punt returns for 148 yards.

Johnson will now join a Jags team that has 10 receivers who were in the league last year, plus two undrafted rookie receivers (Kevin Austin and Lujuan Winningham), who signed contracts after the draft. It will be an uphill battle for him to make the team, but the team could use an extra receiver with Jamal Agnew recovering from a season-ending hip injury still.
