Trevor Nowaske claimed off waivers by the Cardinals

The Lions hoped Nowaske wouldn’t get claimed but the Cardinals were one of several teams that placed a waiver claim

The Lions knew they were risking a personnel loss when they waived linebacker Trevor Nowaske on Thursday. That unfortunate possibility became a reality when the Arizona Cardinals claimed the undrafted rookie from the waiver wire.

Nowaske will be on the Cardinals’ 53-man roster for the remainder of the season, and Arizona controls his rights beyond the 2023 campaign. The Detroit-area native was a feel-good story, earning a spot on the Lions as an undrafted rookie from Saginaw Valley State. The Lions added him to the active roster earlier in the season when another team attempted to poach him off the practice squad.

He played extensively on special teams in the last two games but did not appear on defense.

Cornerback Chase Lucas cleared waivers and is expected back on the Lions practice squad.

Bengals claim DL Travis Bell on waiver wire

The Bengals make an addition on the waiver wire.

With star nose tackle DJ Reader lost for the season, the Cincinnati Bengals have found some help on the waiver wire before the Week 16 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Bengals claimed former Falcons defensive lineman Travis Bell off waivers on Wednesday.

A seventh-round pick by Chicago in 2023 out of Kennesaw State, Bell spent time with the Falcons before being released on December 19, playing his first NFL snaps in Week 14.

Josh Tupou, Zach Carter and Jay Tufele are the primary rotational guys who will attempt to fill the void left by Reader. The Bengals previously attempted to claim former Titans lineman Teair Tart earlier this week.

Bengals attempted to claim former Titans DL Teair Tart on waiver wire

The Bengals attempted to make a claim on the waiver wire.

The Cincinnati Bengals have made some quality additions over the waiver wire in recent years and attempted to make that happen again this week.

Unfortunately for the Bengals, the Houston Texans got in the way.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Bengals were one of a handful of teams to put in a claim on defensive tackle Teair Tart after he was waived by the Tennessee Titans, but the Texans had top priority in the waiver wire order.

Tart, 26, spent the last four seasons with the Titans and would have been a timely addition to the Cincinnati roster after losing star DJ Reader for the season to injury.

Given some of the reported drama between Tart and the Titans this year, the fact the Bengals were willing to take the risk likely says a lot about their desire to add to the position in the middle of this attempted playoff run.

7 QBs Bengals could target after Joe Burrow’s season-ending injury

Some QB targets for the Bengals now that Joe Burrow is out for the year.

To get a big disclaimer out of the way early, the Cincinnati Bengals don’t figure to make a big move at the quarterback position in the wake of Joe Burrow’s season-ending injury.

Cincinnati has committed to Jake Browning as the backup and starter, so at most, the team could add a player to the practice squad as the emergency third or even let AJ McCarron eventually get a start over Browning.

Still, it’s hard not to look at the list of available quarterbacks — in free agency and on the waiver wire — and wonder, especially because the elephant in the room is this — Cincinnati’s championship window is open and it sure isn’t going to stay that way forever.

So, let’s do some due diligence and look at the best available quarterbacks right now.

Bucs put in unsuccessful waiver claim for RB Michael Carter

The Bucs were looking for running back help in the former Jets back, but the Cardinals had waiver priority.

The Tampa Bay Buccanneers tried to get some help for their woeful running game, but the waiver claim system denied them the opportunity.

The New York Jets released veteran running back Michael Carter a few days ago, and when waiver claims came in on Wednesday, he was awarded to the Arizona Cardinals. But the Cardinals weren’t the only team that tried to claim him, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport — the Washington Commanders and the Bucs attempted to claim his as well but were lower than Arizona in the waiver order.

The Bucs could certainly have used the help. Outside of lead back Rachaad White, the rest of Tampa Bay’s running backs — Chase Edmonds, Sean Tucker and Ke’Shawn Vaughn — have combined for an abysmal 94 yards on 53 carries, or 1.7 yards per carry. With that in mind, the team could have used a veteran presence to shake things up, and it tried to do so but was denied.

Carter has only had eight carries this year but has 38 yards for 4.8 yards per attempt. His best season came in 2021, when he ran for 639 yards and four touchdowns.

Bengals news: Waiver wire target idea, Trey Hendrickson injury update and more

The latest Bengals news items and notes to know.

The Cincinnati Bengals provided fans with some unexpected news as the primetime showdown against the Baltimore Ravens approached.

The injury status of defensive end Trey Hendrickson was front and center and on Tuesday, he seemed to suit up for practice just fine despite suffering a hyperextended knee just days earlier.

Considering Tee Higgins is likely out, it was some of the best news the team could have offered up.

That, plus a suspension for an opponent from last week and a waiver wire target make up the top headlines.

Here’s a look at the must-know Bengals news, notes and quotes for November 15.

Jets just gave Bengals a very interesting waiver wire target

Should the Bengals go after this Jets player on the waiver wire?

The Cincinnati Bengals could use some help at running back and the New York Jets might’ve just provided it.

Tuesday, the Jets released Michael Carter, a 2021 fourth-round pick who had been functioning as the pass-catching and third-down back before falling out of favor.

According to Pro Football Network’s Jay Morrison, the Bengals really liked Carter during his draft — and they got an up-close-and-peronal look at him his rookie year when he put up 172 total yards and a touchdown on the Cincinnati defense.

The Bengals would have to put in a waiver claim to get Carter and would inherit his cheap remaining rookie contract if they get him. But with Joe Mixon dominating the snap counts and nobody else stepping up as an explosive option, it would make some sense for the staff to go get a guy they liked and hope for a spark.

Lions land no waiver claims, lose CB Starling Thomas

The Detroit Lions failed to add any players via waivers after the roster cutdowns but lost CB Starling Thomas

Lions fans around the world anxiously awaited 12 p.m. ET on Wednesday afternoon to see what moves GM Brad Holmes might have made on the NFL waiver wire. All the waiver claims from the last few days of roster cuts were processed at that hour.

In terms of player additions, the excitement was for naught. The Lions did not have any successful waiver claims when the league’s official transaction report came out. That doesn’t necessarily mean the Lions didn’t place any waiver claims, but teams ahead of them in the waiver wire order landed any of those players. Detroit say 18th in the wire order.

The Lions did lose one player they waived. Undrafted rookie CB Starling Thomas was claimed by the Arizona Cardinals. Thomas is now added to the Cardinals’ active roster. The speedy UDFA from UAB was great on special teams throughout the preseason and had some moments in coverage, but also showed a major propensity for defensive holding and illegal contact penalties in both the preseason and training camp.

Players recently cut that could interest the Detroit Lions

Here are some recently cut players that stand out as guys Lions GM Brad Holmes could go after.

Roster cutdowns can be an opportunity to build up a roster. Players who didn’t make one team, for whatever reason, might wind up being a good fit for another. For the Detroit Lions and GM Brad Holmes, it’s an opportunity to potentially churn the bottom of the roster even after the initial 53-man unit has been established.

Waiver claims right after the roster cutdown aren’t terribly common. but they do happen. This is how the Lions added Romeo Okwara to the roster back in 2017. There is now an opportunity for another player or two to join Okwara as a roster cutdown waiver claim who can become a long-term Lion.

The Lions are 18th in the waiver wire order by virtue of their 9-8 finish in 2022; the waiver wire order is based on the final result of the prior season at this point. Remember: players claimed on waivers go directly to the 53-man active roster, which means someone who initially made the Lions would have to be removed from the active roster — be it a cut or a move to the injured reserve.

While I don’t expect the Lions to be very active on the waiver claim front, there are a few players who got cut by other teams that could fit roles in Detroit. Here are some that stand out as players GM Brad Holmes could go after.

Entire NFL waiver wire order after cut down day

When more than 1,000 NFL players hit the market Tuesday, the majority will pass though the waiver wire.

More than 1,000 players across the NFL are set to hit the market when every team has to cut its roster from 90 players down to the limit of 53 by Tuesday afternoon.

The vast majority of those players will hit the waiver wire. That group will reportedly include quarterback Nathan Rourke and outside linebacker Jordan Smith of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Every team in the NFL will have the opportunity to put in claims for waived players they’d like to add to their active roster. If multiple teams claim the same player, he’ll be awarded to the team with the higher priority on the waiver order.

That order is determined by record, with the worst teams in the NFL getting first dibs on waived players. For now, that’s based off 2022 records and the full order is as follows:

  1. Chicago Bears
  2. Houston Texans
  3. Arizona Cardinals
  4. Indianapolis Colts
  5. Denver Broncos
  6. Los Angeles Rams
  7. Las Vegas Raiders
  8. Atlanta Falcons
  9. Carolina Panthers
  10. New Orleans Saints
  11. Tennessee Titans
  12. Cleveland Browns
  13. New York Jets
  14. New England Patriots
  15. Green Bay Packers
  16. Washington Commanders
  17. Pittsburgh Steelers
  18. Detroit Lions
  19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  20. Seattle Seahawks
  21. Miami Dolphins
  22. Los Angeles Chargers
  23. Baltimore Ravens
  24. Minnesota Vikings
  25. Jacksonville Jaguars
  26. New York Giants
  27. Dallas Cowboys
  28. Buffalo Bills
  29. Cincinnati Bengals
  30. San Francisco 49ers
  31. Philadelphia Eagles
  32. Kansas City Chiefs

Players who are unclaimed become free agents and are free to be signed to practice squads.
