Some unfortunate news for a long-time Lions player. Current New York Giants linebacker Jarrad Davis will miss the 2023 season after suffering a knee injury during the Giants’ OTAs earlier this offseason.

New York placed Davis on injured reserve at the onset of training camp, meaning his 2023 season is over before it ever started.

The 28-year-old Davis was the Lions’ first-round pick in 2017 out of Florida. He was a starting LB for Detroit over most of his first four seasons. After a season with the New York Jets, Davis returned to the Lions for 2022.

The popular Davis lasted just three games in Detroit last season, moving on to the Giants. He played in one game for New York and racked up 11 tackles and a sack, offering another glimpse of potential with his new team.

Giants sign DB Darren Evans, place LB Jarrad Davis on season-ending IR

The New York Giants have signed DB Darren Evans and placed LB Jarrad Davis on season-ending IR as part of a trio of transactions.

The New York Giants officially placed linebacker Jarrad Davis on injured reserve on Tuesday night, ending his 2023 season.

This comes a week after it was reported that Davis would be out ‘long term‘ following knee surgery.

Davis was signed by the Giants late last season, starting in one regular season game and the Giants’ two playoff games, racking up seven combined tackles and one QB hit.

In addition to Davis landing on IR, the Giants also waived/injured (second-year) rookie Leonard Johnson.

Johnson went undrafted out of Duke last year and missed the entire season after suffering a torn ACL leading up to the 2022 NFL draft. The Giants signed him to a standard three-year deal back in March but now he faces another setback. If (when) Johnson goes unclaimed on waivers, he will revert to injured reserve.

Finally, the Giants also announced that they have signed defensive back Darren Evans.

Evans was originally signed as an undrafted free agent last year but he was waived at the end of training camp. After going unclaimed on waivers, Evans joined the XFL’s Arlington Renegades and went on to win a championship ring alongside several other ex-Giants, including safety Will Hill.

How can Giants replace LB Jarrad Davis?

With LB Jarrad Davis (knee) out for an extended period of time, what options do the New York Giants have to replace him?

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

With veteran inside linebacker Jarrad Davis out ‘long term‘ after ongoing knee surgery recently, the New York Giants will be relying on some inexperienced options in second-year players Micah McFadden and Darrian Beavers.

McFadden, a fifth-round pick out of Indiana last year, was the only Giants draft pick to play in all 17 games, starting seven. He was replaced, ironically, by Davis in the postseason.

Beavers was a sixth-round selection out of Cincinnati who did not play a down as a rookie last year having torn his ACL in the Giants’ second preseason game.

Although the team is high on both players, they will likely seek to augment the group with another player, most likely one with more NFL experience.

Nick Falato of Big Blue View outlined five free agents the Giants could bring in to see if they are fits: former Atlanta Falcon Deion Jones; Myles Jack, the former Jacksonville standout who played last year in Pittsburgh, and several-time Giantd go-to, Jaylon Smith.

Others suggested were Zach Cunningham and Kwon Alexander.

The Giants will likely seek out a player who can best adapt to coordinator Wink Martindale’s scheme. They also have to agree to a team-friendly deal.

Ultimately, the Giants need one player who could fit both requirements.

An additional name being floated is Kyle Van Not, the former New England Patriot.

The Giants will most likely keep an eye out all the way through training camp and final cuts to see if any other players become available. The best-case scenario is that either or both McFadden and Beavers step up and grasp the role.

Report: Giants’ Jarrad Davis out long-term following recent surgery

New York Giants LB Jarrad Davis is expected to miss an extended period of time following a recent knee surgery.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

The New York Giants are still weeks removed from training camp but are already losing players due to injury.

Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports that linebacker Jarrad Davis is expected to miss an extended period of time after recently undergoing surgery.

Giants middle linebacker Jarrad Davis underwent an undisclosed surgery this summer and is expected to be out long-term, league sources told the Daily News.

Davis, 28, was manning the middle of Wink Martindale’s first-string defense this spring alongside pricey weakside signing Bobby Okereke.

Although Leonard didn’t detail exactly what injury Davis sustained, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post later reported that Davis had undergone knee surgery.

The Giants initially signed Davis off of the Detroit Lions practice squad in late December and he appeared in just one regular season game for the team, recording 11 tackles, one QB hit and 0.5 sacks. He also played in the Giants’ two postseason games.

Davis re-signed with the Giants on a one-year, $1.18 million contract in March.

Here’s how Davis’ contract will break down if he misses time due to injury:

The salary goes from $1.08 million to a $550,000 split salary if he’s not on the team’s active/inactive list.

The deal carries a reduced veteran salary benefit cap hit ($1.04 million), and the $75,000 roster bonus only comes due if Davis is on the active roster for one regular season game this season.

In Davis’ absence, the Giants will rely on second-year linebackers Darrian Beavers and Micah McFadden. They may also opt to sign a veteran free agent.

Giants’ Bobby Okereke impressed with Micah McFadden

New York Giants LB Bobby Okereke says he’s impressed with some of the younger players, including Micah McFadden and Darrian Beavers.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Bobby Okereke, the free agent inside linebacker the New York Giants signed to a four-year, $40 million deal this offseason, is all about doing whatever it is asked of him to help the defense improve.

If that means wearing the ‘green dot’ on his helmet the season, he’ll do it. The ‘green dot’ is assigned to the player who wears the radio headset and calls the defensive signals.

Last year, under first-year defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, several players wore the green dot, including safeties. That might continue this season, but for now, in OTAs, Okereke is one of the players bearing the responsibility.

“I don’t expect to,” Okereke told reporters on Thursday at the team’s OTA session when asked if he expects to wear the green do this season.

“Whatever is best for the team. I don’t have an ego about it. I know a couple of different guys are wearing it throughout this process… I’ve worn it a couple games in the past.”

Okereke was signed to fortify a very thin group of inside linebackers, but he doesn’t see things that way.

“I love Micah McFadden. I think he’s a technician, great player, smart guy. Obviously, Jarrad Davis is a great leader. And Darrian Beavers is a guy who has a lot of potential,” he said.

Okereke said his strength is pass coverage and is seen as the off-ball linebacker the team has been lacking. He explained why he is seen as a top player in pass coverage.

“I think just my athleticism,” he said. “I’m big, I’m fast and long. But then just from a mental processing standpoint, understanding how offenses are trying to attack you and where I fit in coverage with my teammates. Just kind of putting it all together.”

The Giants hope they got in on the bottom floor with Okereke. If they did, their defense will be much more successful in 2023.

2023 NFL free agency: 3 underrated Giants additions

The New York Giants have been building depth this offseason and these three additions have flown a bit under the radar.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has been busy this offseason, fortifying his roster with another slew of underrated free agent signings.

Many are writing off most of the moves as flyers, one-year deals on players who are with either coming off injuries or down seasons.

They’re right. But that doesn’t mean Schoen hasn’t found a few gems in those so-called mundane moves. Here are three moves that could turn out to be winners for the Giants this season.

Giants re-sign LB Jarrad Davis

The New York Giants have re-signed veteran linebacker Jarrad Davis to a one-year deal.

With quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley locked down, the New York Giants turned their attention to other in-house free agents on Wednesday.

The first to receive a new contract? Veteran linebacker Jarrad Davis.

The Giants signed linebacker Jarrad Davis off of the Detroit Lions practice squad in late December. He started the season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, recording 11 tackles and 0.5 sacks, and then went on to start both of the team’s playoff games.

Davis, a first-round pick of the Lions in the 2017 NFL draft, appeared in three additional games last season before joining the Giants but recorded just three tackles. He spent the 2021 season with the New York Jets.

In 68 career games (51 starts), Davis has recorded 344 tackles (226 solo, 20 for a loss), 24 QB hits, 11.0 sacks, seven forced fumbles, 10 passes defended, and one interception.

Davis’ new contract it for one year. The financial compensation has not yet been announced.

Giants-Eagles Week 18: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 18 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants closed out the regular season with a 22-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but the game may have been a momentum builder.

Despite much criticism, Giants head coach Brian Daboll opted to sit most of his starters on Sunday and expectations were that Big Blue would get blown out. Instead, the Eagles struggled with New York’s reserves and third-string players, needing every bit of four quarters to finally put them away.

There’s a lot to break down and a lot to go over but before we look ahead, let’s look back. Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ loss.

Offensive snaps: 63
Defensive snaps: 73
Special teams snaps: 28

Precious few starters saw the field on Sunday but of them, offensive lineman Ben Bredeson took 100% of the snaps. Meanwhile, wide receiver Darius Slayton saw the field for only three plays.

Offensive linemen Nick Gates and Evan Neal also hovered around the 50% mark.

Defensively, safety/linebacker Landon Collins got plenty of work in, logging 38 snaps. Fellow linebacker Jarrad Davis, who may start in the Wild Card game, took a snap share of 96%.

In total, just 37 players received a snap on Sunday. Daboll clearly committed to the rest and health of his men.

Giants vs. Colts: 6 keys to victory in Week 17

6 keys to victory for the New York Giants as they host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 17 at MetLife Stadium.

There are two games left in the 2022-2023 season. This Sunday, the New York Giants host the Indianapolis Colts in a must-win contest to cement a post-season run.

The Giants’ season has been a pleasant surprise to fans everywhere — no one thought they would be where they are this year after their front office overhaul. But here we are, and the Giants have a legitimate shot at the playoffs.

To keep those hopes alive, there are six keys to a Giants’ victory on Sunday.

Giants sign LB Jarrad Davis off the Lions practice squad

Davis played in 3 games in his second go-around with the Lions

Jarrad Davis has left Detroit for New York for a second time. The Lions linebacker was signed by the New York Giants off Detroit’s practice squad on Wednesday.

The Giants have to keep Davis for at least three weeks, which leads past the end of the regular season. He replaces injured OL Shane Lemieux on New York’s roster.

Davis was out of options with Detroit. He had already been elevated the maximum three times from the team’s practice squad. The veteran LB played in Weeks 10, 14 and 15. He recorded three total tackles in 37 defensive snaps and another 28 on special teams. The Lions would have had to cut someone or place another player on injured reserve to sign Davis if they intended to play him in the final two weeks.

Davis returned to Detroit after an injury-plagued year with the New York Jets in 2021. He spent his first four seasons in Detroit as the Lions’ first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He was a valuable mentor for the young LB corps and helped coax some strong play out of his collegiate teammate at Florida, Lions LB Alex Anzalone.
