Panthers get jump on Saints with Marquis Haynes scoop-and-score

Marquis Haynes and the Panthers’ defense with a scoop-and-score

Alvin Kamara fumbled the football in the first quarter of the New Orleans Saints game with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Marquis Haynes was in the right spot, picked up the football, and returned it 44 yards for the opening score in the game between NFC South squads.

Haynes is 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds but moved toward the end zone in a much swifter fashion.

The scoop-and-score gave Carolina a 7-0 lead after the PAT.

Panthers will reportedly listen to offers on DE Marquis Haynes

According to @josephperson, the Panthers are open to trade offers on DE Marquis Haynes.

One spot the Carolina Panthers have had no issues maintaining, even coming in to the 2021 campaign, is off the edge. Now, they think they may have their hands a little full.

As a result of their surplus of pass rushers, the Panthers are reportedly willing to listen to trade offers on defensive end Marquis Haynes. Joseph Person of The Athletic was first on the report late Tuesday morning, just hours ahead of the league’s trade deadline.

Carolina currently carries a solid handful of edge defenders including Brian Burns, Haason Reddick, Morgan Fox, Yetur Gross-Matos and Frankie Luvu. Luvu’s emergence this season, in particular, has made Haynes more dispensable in the rotation.

A 2018 fourth-round selection of the previous regime, Haynes has seen a limited amount of playing time throughout the year—having played in just 19 percent of the defense’s snaps thus far. He registered his lowest amount of defensive snaps (five) this past Sunday in the 19-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey heads ‘inactives’ vs. Steelers

Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey, as expected, will not start in tonight’s preseason finale vs. the Steelers.

This should come as no surprise, so hopefully you’re not disappointed, Carolina Panthers fans. But running back Christian McCaffrey will not see any action in tonight’s preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Again, this isn’t flying in out of left field. Head coach Matt Rhule was quite clear regarding his superstar rusher’s status, saying he wants to “save those hits for the season” instead of adding any preseason mileage.

Per the team, a handful of other players will not suit up due to injury. That group includes running backs Trenton Cannon, Reggie Bonnafon and Rodney Smith, linebacker Josh Bynes and safety Kenny Robinson. This could be a damaging hit for Robinson, in particular, who was vying for a spot in the secondary before leaving last week’s contest with a knee injury.

Defensive end Marquis Haynes was also spotted out of uniform. He had just ditched the arm sling he sported following a shoulder injury earlier in the week.

The expected starters for tonight, which should look very much like Week 1’s lineup, are as follows:

QB: Sam Darnold
RB: Chuba Hubbard
WR: DJ Moore
WR: Robby Anderson
TE: Dan Arnold
TE: Ian Thomas
LT: Cameron Erving
LG: Pat Elflein
C: Matt Paradis
RG: John Miller
RT: Taylor Moton

DE: Brian Burns
DT: Derrick Browns
DT: Da’Quan Jones
DE: Morgan Fox
SLB: Shaq Thompson
MLB: Jermaine Carter Jr.
WLB: Haason Reddick
CB: Donte Jackson
CB: Jaycee Horn
SS: Jeremy Chinn
FS: Juston Burris

Panthers injury updates: DE Marquis Haynes out of sling, limited in practice

Although he was still limited, Panthers DE Marquis Haynes ditched his sling ahead of Monday’s practice.

Just four days ago, Carolina Panthers defensive end Marquis Haynes walked out at training camp in Spartanburg, S.C. with a sling draped over his right shoulder. Well, he must’ve left it there.

Back at home in Charlotte, the fourth-year pass rusher hit the scene sans sling while wearing a limited practice jersey. Haynes, almost straight off a standout performance in Indianapolis, sustained a shoulder injury last week and has been held out of action on more of a precautionary basis.

Safety Kenny Robinson, who left Saturday’s preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens with a knee injury, was also amongst those not given the green light on Monday. He, fellow safety Sam Franklin, running back Rodney Smith and wide receivers Keith Kirkwoord and Trenton Cannon were all no-go’s. Additionally, defensive end Haason Reddick and Tommy Tremble were not present.

Star wideout DJ Moore did, however, return to a complete session. He was pulled from the joint workout last Thursday after falling on his right side, injuring his back. Moore dressed, but did not play on Saturday.

Panthers injury updates: DE Marquis Haynes may miss 1-2 weeks

The Carolina Panthers are erring on the side of caution with a few of their banged up players as the regular season nears.

Carolina Panthers defensive end Marquis Haynes was riding high coming back into Spartanburg, S.C. this week. But now, he’s coming down for a temporary landing.

Haynes caught the eyes many a reporter on Thursday when he showed up to joint practice with a sling holding up his right arm. The fourth-year pass rusher had just come off a destructive performance in Indianapolis, one where he chalked up multiple quarterback hits and a strip-sack over just 31 snaps.

Head coach Matt Rhule spoke after practice and said Haynes could be out of action for the next week or two to nurse a shoulder injury. That’ll likely end Haynes’ preseason as he and the team will err on the side of caution to get healthy for Week 1.

Wide receiver DJ Moore also turned heads when he went down with a back injury. The budding star was slow to get up after taking a fall on his right side in the end zone of seven-on-seven drills, but should be fine moving forward.

“DJ got hit yesterday in the back and went down,” Rhule said. “DJ’s an absolute warrior. Like, a lot of guys would say ‘Hey, Coach, I can’t go today.’ He came out here, he warmed up, he went and he got hit. Just tightened up on him.”

While Rhule commended Moore’s toughness, he opted to take the safe route on him as well, shutting down his day and preventing any further aggravation.

Additionally, in two key updates from yesterday, fellow wideout Robby Anderson stuck to the exercise bike for a second straight day due to his hamstring issue and linebacker Denzel Perryman (lower-body injury) participated in individual drills. Rhule, at least as far as Anderson goes, does not believe the injury is a “major” one.

Panthers snap counts: OLs Tecklenburg, Christensen do work vs. Colts

C Sam Tecklenburg and RT/RG Brady Christensen stepped up for the Panthers on Sunday.

The Carolina Panthers strolled into Lucas Oil Stadium yesterday afternoon relatively shorthanded for their 2021 preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Each of the team’s projected starters didn’t touch their pads, plus they were already dealing with a handful of injuries to the 90-man roster.

So, with the results now officially in, did Sunday’s snap counts come out a little funky? Well, all in all, they were probably what many would’ve expected to be.

But, more importantly, what can we deduce from these early numbers?

Panthers Preseason: Winners and losers from Sunday’s contest with Colts

Walker showed off his well-documented ability to escape pressure and throw accurately on the run multiple times.

The Panthers lost their first preseason game of the year to the Colts, 21-18.

Here are some winners and losers from today’s contest.

Winner: QB P.J. Walker

Fans were treated to an entertaining performance from Carolina’s No. 2 quarterback. Walker showed off his well-documented ability to escape pressure and throw accurately on the run multiple times.

Walker also displayed a soft touch on his deep passes. He played the whole first half, going 10/21 for 161 yards and an 89.6 passer rating.

Winner: The edge rushers

Carolina showcased a lot of depth on the edge, today. Marquis Haynes jumped out from the first defensive snap, getting pressure on Jacob Eason. He continued being disruptive throughout, posting a strip-sack and forcing a false start against Indy. Frankie Luvu flashed as well, notching a sack on fourth down. Yetur Gross-Matos also got in on the action.

Loser: OT Trent Scott

This team is still looking for a solution to their left tackle problem, as they’ve been rotating a series of different linemen at this position. Trent Scott didn’t help his case to win the job, as he committed a couple of false start penalties before getting replaced by Greg Little.

Winner: WR Terrace Marshall

Marshall was the recipient of Walker’s 60-yard pass in the first quarter, most of which came after the catch thanks to Marshall’s speed. He finished the afternoon with 88 yards, matching his number.

Loser: K Joey Slye

Slye connected on his first two field goals, both of which were less than 30 yards out. He struggled the rest of the game, though. He very nearly missed one from 41 yards then went wide right on an extra point attempt. It was a tough ask, but Slye also missed a 63-yarder to end the first half.

Winner: RB Chuba Hubbard

Carolina’s fourth-round pick had a huge run late in the second quarter. He initially ran into a pile and looked like he’d go down, but Hubbard kept his legs moving and broke free, totaling 59 yards.

Hubbard posted 80 yards on seven carries.

Loser: CB Troy Pride Jr.

Pride got roughed up throughout the game, especially in the fourth quarter when he gave up two big plays. Pride also appeared to get injured both times and had to be carried off the field. He could be in danger of being one of the team’s first 90-to-85 man roster cuts Tuesday.

4 takeaways from the Panthers’ 21-18 preseason loss to Colts

If you were looking for some excitement from the Carolina Panthers rookies, then you couldn’t have been disappointed this afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers (well, some of them, anyway) finally cracked an actual field of play here in 2021. And even in an exhibition matchup with every one of their projected starters not even dressing, there were a handful of developments to shed a light on.

Here are four takeaways from the Panthers’ 21-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Panthers Week 11 injury designations: Christian McCaffrey OUT, Teddy Bridgewater Questionable

The Detroit Lions (4-5) Week 11 opponent, the Carolina Panthers (3-7), have released their injury designations ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Detroit Lions (4-5) Week 11 opponent, the Carolina Panthers (3-7), have released their injury designations ahead of Sunday’s game. The Panthers will be without All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, while seven other starters are listed Doubtful/Questionable, including quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Here’s a look at the Panther’s full injury designations list.

Injury status

Player Position Injury Designation
Teddy Bridgewater QB (starter) MCL Questionable
Christian McCaffrey RB (starter) Shoulder OUT
Mike Davis RB Thumb No Designation
Russell Okung LT (starter) Calf Doubtful
John Miller RG (starter) Knee/Ankle Doubtful
Chris Manhertz TE Shoulder Questionable
Yetur Gross-Matos DE (starter) Shoulder Questionable
Marquis Haynes DE Shoulder Questionable
Tahir Whitehead LB (starter) Rib Questionable
Donte Jackson CB (starter) Toe Doubtful
Rasul Douglas CB (starter) Ankle Questionable
Sam Franklin S Ankle Questionable

McCaffrey being out is obviously a huge loss and something most have been anticipating all week. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by Mike Davis, who was dealing with a thumb injury at the beginning of the week but does not carry an injury designation into this game.

Bridgewater is the biggest question mark surrounding this team. He did next to nothing on Wednesday and Thursday, but got in some work on Friday, leading to coach Matt Rhule calling him a game-time decision. Our brother site Panthers Wire is less optimistic, saying that their “best guess is that Bridgewater’s limited participation this week is a smokescreen and we will be seeing either P.J. Walker or Will Grier under center.” Rhule declined to say who would start if Bridgewater was unable.

Okung and Miller being listed as doubtful is also an underrated blow to this offense, as it’s not totally clear who will replace them in the starting lineup. Dennis Daley, Greg Little, and Trent Scott have all got shots at left tackle, while Daley or Michael Schofield could be in the mix at right guard. Any which way, losing their top two offensive linemen could be problematic.

On defense, most of the players listed above are expected to play, except for starting corner Donte Jackson, who will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by rookie Troy Pride Jr. a fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame. Like most rookie corners, Pride has struggled this season, potentially creating an opportunity for the Lions, despite their banged-up receiving corps.

Panthers Highlights: Brian Burns clobbers Drew Brees, forces fumble

Watch Burns clobber Drew Brees and force a fumble that was recovered by Marquis Haynes.

It’s been tough sledding for a shorthanded Panthers defense today against the Saints. Defensive end Brian Burns came through with a huge play when they needed one, though.

That was the eighth quarterback hit of the season for Burns and his third forced fumble.

New Orleans still leads 14-10 late in the first half.
