Georgia football defensive back accepts Senior Bowl invite

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Mark Webb has accepted an invitation to the 2021 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Mark Webb has accepted an invitation to the 2021 Reese’s Senior Bowl. Mark Webb is a senior out of Archbishop Wood High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Webb has come a long way since arriving in Athens as a four-star wide receiver recruit. Webb converted to defensive back in 2017 and primarily plays the slot cornerback position. He’s proven himself to be a steady run defender and a consistent tackler. Webb will look to improve upon his coverage versus elite competition.

Mark Webb’s acceptance of the Reese’s Senior Bowl invitation means he’ll in all likelihood declare for the 2021 NFL Draft following the college football season. This season is unique for college football because players who played in every game this season can return next year without elapsing any of their eligibility. Webb will play in his final home game Dec. 5 against Vanderbilt.

Webb joins fellow Georgia Bulldogs players to accept an invitation to the game like tight end Tre’ McKitty, offensive lineman Ben Cleveland and defensive lineman Malik Herring. Bulldog fans should expect several more Dawgs to accept invitations to the game. Look for a lot of Georgia Bulldogs to be selected in the 2021 NFL Draft.

LeCounte is the leader of the Dawgs defense, tallying 61 tackles and 4 interceptions last year at defensive back.  He was named to the preseason Bednarik Award watch list, an award given each year to college footballs most outstanding defensive player.  It is going to be fun to watch LeCounte playing in his senior season with the Dawgs and really become the veteran leader of this team.

Herring has been a force for the Bulldogs at the defensive end position.  He has played in every game except two since arriving in Athens in 2017.  Herring had 26 tackles, two pass deflections and 18 quarterback hurries in 9 games with Georgia last season.

Salyer will replace now Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson at the right tackle position.  Salyer played in 26 games in his first two seasons with the Dawgs and is expected to be a cornerstone for the offensive line this year.

The Bulldogs kick off against the Razorbacks at 4:00 p.m. ET on SEC Network.

UGA football player card: DL Jalen Carter

Carter was quite impressive in camps and against stout competition. Can he hold up as well in the SEC? Not too much will be expected of him as a freshman, but he’s certainly got the talent to break into UGA’s talented front seven.

The Dawgs return Jordan Davis, Julian Rochester, Malik Herring, Travon Walker, and more along the defensive line. Carter will be fun to watch next season.

CFN ranks top-five Georgia defensive players for 2020 season

College Football News ranked the top-five Georgia defensive players for the 2020 season.

Pete Fiutak of College Football News recently previewed the Georgia Bulldogs for the upcoming 2020 season and ranked UGA’s top-five defensive players.

Here’s how he ranked them:

1. S Richard LeCounte

LeCounte is one of America’s top ranked safety prospects for the 2021 NFL Draft. Through three seasons, two of which saw him as a full-time starter, LeCounte has racked up 150 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions, six pass breakups, five fumble recoveries, and four forced fumbles. LeCounte has established himself as a playmaker on Georgia’s elite defense. Georgia had the top-ranked scoring defense in the nation last season. LeCounte does lose his partner in crime at the safety position, J.R. Reed, though. He’ll miss Reed, but now he’s ready to run the back-end of UGA’s defense. The former five-star recruit has forced a combined nine turnovers over the last two seasons. LeCounte recorded the second most interceptions in the SEC last season with four. He recovered the most fumbles (three) in the league as well. It’ll be a pleasure to watch his last season between the hedges.

Georgia DL Malik Herring third best returning defender per PFF

Senior defensive lineman Malik Herring returns for one last season as a Georgia Bulldog.

Herring, a former 4-star recruit out of Mary Pearsons High School in Forsyth, Georgia, looks to be a leader on one of college football’s best defenses in 2020.

Seeing as how Georgia rotates so many of its defensive lineman, it’s difficult to notice the individual impact these big guys have in the trenches.

Luckily we have Pro Football Focus (PFF) to analyze each players’ impact and assign them a player grade. According to PFF, Herring is considered the SEC’s top returning defensive lineman and the third highest graded returning defender overall in the league.

In three years, Herring has appeared in 31 games. Last season, he accounted for 18 quarterback pressures, which was the third most on the team.

‘Last Dance’ doc has Georgia players thinking national championship

Watching the Last Dance doc has Georgia football players thinking about winning the CFB national championship this year.

Whether it be the older folks reliving the greatest era of NBA basketball or the younger fans finally getting to see how special Michael Jordan really was, ESPN’s ‘The Last Dance’ documentary was exactly what America needed during the coronavirus pandemic.

We may not have experienced the same rush of emotions that we do when watching live sports, but this evoked a different kind of emotion. Seeing how badly Jordan wanted to win and then seeing the passion pour out of him when he did win struck a chord with fans and athletes.

As for Georgia defensive end Malik Herring, a senior, he is longing for that feeling that Jordan had when he won his sixth title in 1998. He also made mention of LeBron James, who is considered to be his generation’s Jordan, and referenced LeBron’s first title in 2012 with the Heat.

“Seeing Jordan get his sixth ring and Lebron get his first ring. Their emotions is everything. I just want that feeling man I swear I do,” Herring wrote on Twitter.

Herring was a member of that 2017 team that came so close to bringing a national championship back home to Athens. He was a freshman at the time, and has had to live with that bitter feeling since that day.

Since, Herring and Georgia have fought and fought but have not been able to return to the College Football Playoff.

And then there’s wide receiver Demetris Robertson, also a senior, who transferred to Georgia after that 2017 season.

As a member of the Dawgs, he’s come close as well, losing to Alabama in that heart-breaking 2018 SEC Championship Game and then making it to Atlanta last year just to lose to LSU in a blowout.

“Time to get ours this year,” Robertson said, in response to Herring’s tweet.

Both Herring and Robertson return for one last dance at UGA in 2020, and they don’t want to leave with anything less than a national championship.

Georgia has two of the highest graded returning edge defenders in SEC

According to PFF, Georgia edge defenders Malik Herring and Azeez Olujari are two of the top three returning in the SEC in 2020.

According to PFF (Pro Football Focus) Georgia is returning two of the SEC’s top edge defenders for the 2020 season.

Georgia senior defensive end Malik Herring graded as the highest returning SEC edge defender at 90.5. Herring, from Forsyth, Georgia, played in 13 games for the Bulldogs in 2019 and recorded five tackles for loss and 26 total tackles as part of a Georgia defensive line that played mostly as a unit, rotating in and out to keep legs fresh.

A few points behind Kentucky’s Jamar Watson on the list is Georgia red-shirt sophomore Azeez Ojulari, who graded as the third best SEC returning edge defender at 78.0.

After a red-shirting his freshman season, Ojulari burst onto the scene for the Bulldogs in 2019, recording 36 tackles and six for a loss. Against Tennessee, the Marietta, Georgia native led the team with two sacks and 10 quarterback pressures.

The 2019 Georgia defense was one of the best the Bulldogs have ever seen. And with the help of returning starters like Malik Herring and Azeez Olujari with veterans like Monty Rice and Richard LeCounte III, Georgia could have another record-breaking defense in 2020.
