Nick Saban provides injury update heading into Ole Miss game

Nick Saban provides the latest on the injury front!

Tuscaloosa is the sight of another top 15 SEC matchup on Saturday afternoon as No. 1 Alabama and No. 12 Ole Miss face off.

Lane Kiffin will be making his return to Bryant Denny Stadium for the first time since being named the Rebels’ head coach. His team is coming off a bye week, having the opportunity to get healthy.

Alabama did not have the same advantage. Even if Southern Miss was not the best opponent, there were still 60 minutes of football to be played.

Nick Saban was able to provide injury updates on three players Wednesday morning. One of the more surprising ones was Henry To’oTo’o coming out of the Florida game.

“He was a little sick when we played down at Florida,” Saban said about the linebacker. “He played anyway. But he has played extremely well for us.”

To’oTo’o finished with nine tackles against the Gators and three last week against Southern Miss. He and Christian Harris have been an intricate part of the defense thus far.

Alabama’s pass rush could finally be back at full strength as well, with LaBryan Ray returning to near 100%.

“He’s played in the last two games and played more in each one of those games,” Saban said. “We’re very pleased with the progress that he’s making and the way that he’s playing, and I think the more he plays, the more productive that he’ll be and I think the more confident that he’ll get that he’s physically healthy as well as making strides to getting back to be the kind of player that he’s always been for us.”

The defensive lineman suffered a groin injury just before the summer ended and missed the first two games of the season.

On the offensive side of the ball, it sounds like Brian Robinson Jr. is ready to be the feature back of the offense again. After missing the Southern Miss game, Saban said Robinson Jr. would practice this week and be listed as day-to-day.

On Wednesday he confirmed the running back will be good to go for Ole Miss.

“He [Robinson Jr.] looks good and he’s practiced well, so we’re encouraged that he’ll be able to play in the game on Saturday.”

Stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire to stay updated with the injury situation before Saturday.

Alabama football: Grading Alabama’s commanding win over Southern Miss

Here’s our final grade for Alabama’s commanding victory over Southern Miss!

No. 1 Alabama dominated its inferior opponent in Southern Miss on Saturday night with a 63-14 victory. Alabama was able to control all three phases of the game and provided its most complete performance of the season.

Each week we give a grade out for all three phases of the game, let’s see how the team did this week!

OFFENSE: A+

Gary Cosby-USA TODAY Sports

The Alabama offense, led by Bryce Young put together its most balanced performance of the season. The lack of a consistent running game through the first three games of the season had started to become a cause of concern for this team. Even though Southern Miss doesn’t have the type of players Alabama will face in the SEC, it was nice to see the offensive line open up holes for the backs and the backs make some explosive plays in the run game.

Roydell Williams led all rushers with 110 yards on 11 carries for an average of 10 yards per carry. Williams also had a run of 55 yards in the first half. Jase McClellan added another 98 yards on the ground, which included a long of 27.

Bryce Young displayed his pinpoint accuracy going 20-22 passing for 313 yards and 5 touchdowns. Junior tight end Jahleel Billingsley showed off his talents by catching 5 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown.

Alabama was able to play several young players late in the contest. True freshman quarterback Jalen Milroe was able to record his first career touchdown pass on Saturday night with a 24-yard rope to Javon Baker.

The Alabama offense seems to be finding its groove at just the right time!

DEFENSE: A-

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

Like the offense, the Alabama defense put together a much-needed consistent performance. The 14 points allowed are a little more than most fans would have wanted, but the Tide defense gave up just over 200 yards to the Golden Eagles and just 3.7 yards per play.

The defensive line had its best performance of the season and some depth may have been discovered in players such as Jamil Burroughs and LaBryan Ray.

Will Anderson continues to dominate racking up three tackles for loss and one sack.

The Tide defense will need to bring its best effort next Saturday against Lane Kiffin and the high-powered Ole Miss offense.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A+

Gary Cosby-USA TODAY Sports

Not much to say here, Jameson Williams returned two kickoffs for a touchdown. Anytime you put points on the board from one of the special team’s units, things are going pretty well.

Nick Saban and special teams coordinator Drew Svoboda have to be pleased with the efforts of the special team units so far this season.

OVERALL: A-

Although the opponent was not the best, the Tide delivered its most complete performance of the season. Both sides of the ball handled the line of scrimmage and the skill position players made plays.

We got a taste of how good this Alabama team could be, let’s see if they can build off this week’s performance and rise to the occasion against a talented Ole Miss team.

Alabama football: Injury report heading into matchup with Miami

Injury update heading into the week one matchup with the Miami Hurricanes

Alabama and Miami are set to face off inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA this Saturday in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

A common concern heading into any contest is player availability. There are a couple of injuries that need to be updated.

Senior offensive tackle Kendall Randolph injured his ankle in the first scrimmage of fall camp, but head coach Nick Saban mentioned in his press conference on Monday that Randolph was back healthy and the offensive line was intact.

The news is not quite as promising for junior safety DeMarrco Hellams. Hellams also suffered an ankle injury during fall camp and at the moment is questionable for Saturday’s game against Miami.

Finally, senior defensive lineman LaBryan Ray, who suffered a groin injury at the end of the summer, looks to be healthy and has been participating in practice.

LaBryan Ray looks to shake injuries in fifth year

LaBryan Ray is going to be an important part of Alabama’s defensive front! He just has to stay healthy.

The 2017 Alabama football recruiting class is perhaps one of the best-recruiting classes of the Nick Saban era. It has produced eight first-round drafts picks and three late-round picks or undrafted free agents.

One of the headliners from this class is back for another season in senior defensive lineman LaBryan Ray. Ray was a consensus five-star prospect from James Clemens High School in Madison, Ala.

Ray’s career has been injury-riddled almost ever since he stepped on campus in Tuscaloosa. In his freshman campaign, Ray suffered a foot injury which limited his playing action to just six games.

His sophomore season showed flashes of his five-star talent. In a backup role, Ray amassed 39 tackles, including 5.5 for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Once again the injury bug hit Ray in his junior season in which he missed most of with yet another lower leg injury. In his shortened season he made just two tackles.

Ray entered the 2020 COVID season as a redshirt junior and was primed for a breakout performance. In the preseason he was selected for the Outland Trophy Watch List and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List respectfully until once again, the injuries began to pile up.

Ray now enters his fifth year at the Capstone and hopes to have all his injuries behind him. Aside from his on-the-field production, Ray is hoping to have a much greater impact this fall as one of the leaders on the team. In his spring presser, Ray mentioned the importance of him becoming more of a leader. Ray said, “I think now it’s that time to take it to the next level and be the leader that I should be.”

It remains to be seen if Ray can stay healthy. If he can, look for him to have a major impact both on and off the field.

Detroit Lions’ scouting guide to the 2021 National Championship

Detroit Lions will be scouting the 2021 National Championship for this upcoming NFL draft and here are the players they will be watching.

Despite not having a general manager or head coach in place, the Detroit Lions need to still be making preparations for the 2021 NFL draft, and that means scouting tonight’s college football national championship.

The Alabama Crimson Tide will be taking on the Ohio State Buckeyes at 8:00 pm, EST on several ESPN platforms.

Not only does this game offer the Lions options for the seventh overall pick in the 2021 draft, but there are also options for picks 41 and 72, the Lions current second and third-round picks respectively.

Quarterbacks

Justin Fields Ohio State, Jr (6-2.5, 223)
Mac Jones, Alabama, redshirt Jr (6-2, 205)

Fields is one of the top players in this class and appears on track to be selected in the Top-10. His combination of athleticism, accuracy, arm strength, and leadership make him a very appealing option for a team looking to rebuild. If the Lions are executing a full reset at quarterback, and Fields is available when it’s their selection, he could very well be their top choice.

If the Lions opt to delay selecting a quarterback until Day 2, Jones could be in the mix. More of a traditional pocket passer, Jones has solid arm strength and can hit his targets at all three levels. If the Lions stick with a basic west-coast-themed offense, Jones would fit in well and could develop into a starter down the road.

Running backs

Najee Harris, Alabama (6-1.5, 230)
Trey Sermon, Ohio State (6-0, 221)

Harris’ combination of athleticism and power is going to make him a coveted back in this cycle, but the Lions have already invested high picks in D’Andre Swift and Kerryon Johnson, making Harris an unlikely selection in this draft.

Sermon also plays with great power/contact balance, and would be ideal as a complement to a running back tandem that features an elusive runner and third-down back tandem like the Lions. If he lands on Day 3 of the draft, he should get some attention from Detroit, regardless of the scheme.

Wide receivers/Tight ends

Devonta Smith, WR, Alabama (6-0, 175)
Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama, Jr (5-10, 182)
Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State, Jr (6-0, 188)
Jeremy Ruckert, TE, Ohio State, Jr (6-5, 250)

Smith and Waddle are both options to be selected in the Top-10, with both being instant impact contributors.

Smith — this year’s Heisman Trophy winner — is a dominating receiver, who cannot be covered one-on-one by college defensive backs. His combination of explosiveness, precise route-running, and sure handedness make him a top option in this class. My NFL comparison for Smith is a cross between Marvin Harrison and Antonio Brown.

Waddle’s game is built on elite speed and big-play ability. If you like Tyreek Hill, Waddle is the receiver for you.

Olave is the buckeye’s big-play option. His ability to gain separation and track the deep ball makes him an ideal wide receiver No. 2 with upside. He should hear his name called on the second day of the draft.

Right now, Ruckert looks like an early Day 3 option at tight end. He has the potential to be a complementary blocking tight end who can be relied upon in the passing game.

Offensive line

Wyatt Davis, OG, Ohio State, redshirt Jr (6-3, 313)
Alex Leatherwood, OT/G, Alabama (6-5, 310)
Landon Dickson, C, Alabama (6-5, 344)
Josh Meyers, C, Ohio State, redshirt jr (6-4, 310)
Deonte Brown, G, Alabama, (6-4, 338)

The first four players in this section look like Top-100 selections and could be among the first five players drafted at their positions – depending on where teams project playing them. Brown is on the fringe, but could still find his way into Day 2 of the draft.

The Lions surely got a long look at Davis and Meyers when scouting Jonah Jackson last year. Jackson held down the Buckeye’s left guard spot, while Davis started at right guard, with Meyers in between them. It’d cost the Lions another Day 2 pick, but either would be a big step towards solidifying the Lions’ offensive line.

In tonight’s championship game, keep an eye on Alabama’s left side where Leatherwood is their left tackle, and Brown is their left guard. Unfortunately, Dickson is injured his knee in the SEC championship game and won’t play tonight.

Defensive line

Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama, redshirt sophomore (6-5, 310)
Tommy Togiai, DT, Ohio State, Jr (6-2, 300)
Haskell Garrett, DT, Ohio State (6-2, 286)
LaBryan Ray, DT, Alabama (6-5, 292)

Typically the defensive lines on these teams are flush with talent, but outside of Baramore, the other three seem like Day 3 options.

Baramore played as one of Alabama’s three down linemen, filling the same role Da’Shawn Hand held during his time with the Crimson Tide. Like Hand, Baramore is likely best as a 3-technique at the pro level and will receive varying scouting grades depending on the scheme the team runs. In the Lions’ previous scheme, he probably would’ve been a top-50 pick, but with the Lions scheme up in the air, it’s hard to place value on him at this time.

Linebackers

Dylan Moses, Alabama, redshirt Jr (6-2, 235)
Baron Browning, Ohio State, (6-2, 248)
Pete Werner, Ohio State (6-2, 239)

Moses looked like a surefire first-round pick before tearing his ACL last season and opting to return to school. This year he looks like he is still shaking off the injury, but if he passes medicals and teams believe he can return to form, he could be nice value in the second round.

Browning is a freaky athlete with the tools to succeed but hasn’t put it all together on the field consistently. His stock will range all over depending on how much value teams put on testing. Werner doesn’t quite have Browning’s athleticism, but he has terrific range, intelligence, and work ethic.

Defensive backs

Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama, Jr (6-1, 203)
Shaun Wade, Slot DB, Ohio State, redshirt Jr ((6-0, 194)
Josh Jobe, CB, Alabama, Jr (6-0, 189)

Surtain is in the mix to be the top cornerback selected in this cycle and could hear his name called in the Top-10 picks. It would be very out of the box for the Lions to take back-to-back Top-10 corners, so don’t get your hopes up he will land in Detroit.

Wade, though, should be very much in the mix. He held down the nickel spot for the Buckeyes in 2019, but after Okudah left — and was drafted by the Lions — Wade shifted outside and has not performed as well. At the next level, Wade seems much better suited shifting to a hybrid role — where he can play in nickel sets at corner and safety, while also having the range to play situationally on the outside.

Big and aggressive, Jobe is still too raw to be considered a high-round draft pick and maybe better suited to return to school for more polish. If he does declare, the Lions could find value in a few years by drafting, stashing, and waiting for him to develop.

Alabama football countdown: 18 days until kickoff

We are 18 days from Alabama football kicking off its season on the road against the Missouri Tigers to start a 10-game, SEC only schedule.

There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding college football over the last couple of months, but as of right now, the season still looks like it’s a go for the SEC, ACC and Big 12.

So, what does that mean? It means that we can continue the Countdown to Kickoff en route to the Crimson Tide — and the rest of the SEC — getting things underway on Sept. 26.

With it now being Sept. 8, we are officially 17 days away from the start!

Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Slade Bolden has worn the No. 18 for Alabama over the last few seasons, but the more important news might be the new defensive player rocking the number.

According to the official Crimson Tide football roster, redshirt defensive lineman LaBryan Ray has switched from No. 89 to No. 18, which will look different than what we’ve seen from him in recent years.

https://twitter.com/ClintRLamb/status/1303465963476705297?s=20

Either way, it’s become an important number with expected contributions on both sides of the football wearing it for 2020.

2020 Alabama football schedule

  • Sept. 26 at Missouri (Columbia, Mizz.)
  • Oct. 3 vs. Texas A&M (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
  • Oct. 10 at Ole Miss (Oxford, Miss.)
  • Oct. 17 vs. Georgia (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
  • Oct. 24 at Tennessee (Knoxville, Tenn.)
  • Oct. 31 vs. Miss State (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
  • Nov. 14 at LSU (Baton Rouge, La.)
  • No. 21 vs. Kentucky (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
  • Nov. 28 vs. Auburn (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
  • Dec. 5 at Arkansas (Fayetteville, Ark.)

2021 3-round mock draft: Bills add playmakers then versatility

Here’s what the Buffalo Bills do in Draft Wire’s way-too-early 2021 NFL mock draft.

So far here’s what we know about the Buffalo Bills and 20201 NFL Draft: They’ll have at least three picks in first three rounds. What happens with those is very much up for debate.

Especially since the world has been turned upside down due to COVID-19 and we haven’t even started the 2020 regular season yet.

But Draft Wire decided to still take a very early stab at what the Bills could do next offseason at the draft and in doing so, the Bills add a couple of playmakers to both sides of the ball. Using the latest Super Bowl odds to peg their draft order, the Bills select a cornerback and wide receiver, respectively, before adding more of what Sean McDermott and Brandon Bean love: Versatility in the trenches.

Here’s what Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling has the Bills doing in his latest three-round 2021 mock draft:

Stanford Cardinal cornerback Paulson Adebo. Credit: Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

19. Buffalo Bills
Paulson Adebo | CB | Stanford

Paulson Adebo actually had a highlighted matchup against current Bills wide receiver Gabriel Davis in college. But the two shouldn’t mind if they end up on the same roster in the pros. At 6-foot-1, Adebo is a highly-touted cornerback prospect that has excellent length which is coveted in the NFL. So are ball skills, and Adebo has had four interceptions and at least 10 pass breakups in his two years as a starter.

While the Bills do have a packed cornerback room currently, there’s nothing there to suggest the position is out of play in Round 1 of next year’s draft. Tre’Davious White should be locked up long-term, but across from him, the Bills continue to employ one-year stop gaps. Past 2020, both Josh Norman and Levi Wallace could realistically be gone, clearing the way for McDermott to finally search for a solution at the N.2 cornerback spot for more than one season.

Four Alabama linemen named to 2020 Outland Trophy Watch List

Alabama Football’s Deonte Brown, Landon Dickerson, Alex Leatherwood & LaBryan Ray were all been named to the 2020 Outland Trophy Watch list
