Roll Tide Wire staff predictions for Alabama vs Ole Miss

Alabama hosts the biggest CFB game of the weekend against No. 12 Ole Miss Saturday. Check out the Roll Tide Wire’s staff predictions here.

All of the college football world will have their eyes on Tuscaloosa Saturday afternoon as the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide welcomes the No. 12 Ole Miss Rebels to Bryant Denny Stadium. In the most anticipated offensive matchup of the season, Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin are ready to face off.

Both quarterbacks are early season Heisman favorites in Bryce Young and Matt Corral. The two have combined for 2,121 passing yards and 24 touchdowns. With a shootout expected, a lot of yards are expected.

Neither defense is getting the time of day as far as talking points go. Both are off to a good start, giving up less than 21 points per game. Whichever unit can make a couple of stops will have an early leg up.

Tipico Sportsbook currently have Alabama favored by 14.5 points. The Crimson Tide has been favored by at least two touchdowns for 11 straight games regular-season games.

Staff predicts the game

Alabama (-14.5) Record ATS Winner Record Overall
AJ Spurr Ole Miss 1-0 Alabama 1-0
Griffin McVeigh Alabama 1-0 Alabama 1-0
Stacey Blackwood Ole Miss 1-0 Alabama 1-0
Layne Gerbig Alabama 0-1 Alabama 1-0

Matt Corral will undoubtedly be a problem for the entire defense, not just the secondary. This will be a battle between two of the strongest offenses in the nation. At the end of the day, it’s a battle of whose defense can limit the opposing offense to fewer trips to the end zone. When comparing on paper, Pete Golding’s 2021 defense is the better of the two, but nothing is as simple as that on gameday.

It will feel good to see Bryant Denny rocking for an elite SEC matchup again after the 2020 season. No better opponent to bring the atmosphere back than Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels.

Bryce Young and Matt Corral will provide all the pregame storylines but this one comes down to who wins on the ground. Najee Harris ran for over 200 yards and five touchdowns last season as Alabama pulled away late. Brian Robinson and Jase McClellan need to combine for a monster day.

Offenses are going to score points, it’s inevitable. I trust Alabama’s defense to make a timely stop at home more than anything Ole Miss could pull off.

Saturday we will have the opportunity to witness two of the best offenses in the country dual it out inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Matt Corral will no doubt test the Alabama defense for the entire contest and will also make plenty of plays throughout the game.
On the other hand, Bryce Young will also make plays against an improved but still suspect Ole Miss defense. So what gives?
In the end, I believe the Alabama defense will make a few more timely stops than Ole Miss can, securing a victory for the Tide!

This should be a fun one! Both offenses are highly volatile, so I’m expecting a high-scoring affair, yet again. We’ll see if Alabama can keep the defense off the field enough to keep them fresh!

Alabama still favored by over two touchdowns against Ole Miss

A statement win is expected not only from the Alabama squad but the oddsmakers as well.

Three days away from kickoff and hype is beginning to build for Alabama’s top 15 matchup with Ole Miss. Lane Kiffin is returning to Tuscaloosa for the first time as the Rebels’ head coach, hoping his offensive firepower can secure a program-defining win.

It’s been six years since Ole Miss came to Bryant Denny Stadium and pulled off a similar accomplishment. Quarterback Chad Kelly willed the Rebels to an upset of the No. 2 Crimson Tide.

What’s different this time is the offensive explosion Alabama will have in the passing game to keep up. Bryce Young has the likes of Jameson Williams, John Metchie, and JoJo Earle at his fingertips to rip the ball downfield.

A statement win is expected not only from the Alabama squad but the oddsmakers as well.

Alabama remains a favorite over Ole Miss at -14.5 per Tipico Sportsbook. This will mark the 11th straight time Nick Saban’s squad is at least a two-touchdown favorite during the regular season. Last season’s home game vs Georgia was the last.

Of course, Alabama is 4-0 straight up this season but is only 2-2 against the spread. Wins against Miami and Southern Miss saw the Crimson Tide covering, while Florida and Mercer both did better than Tipico Sportsbook thought.

You can catch the game on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 2:30 p.m. CDT on CBS.

Nick Saban provides injury update heading into Ole Miss game

Nick Saban provides the latest on the injury front!

Tuscaloosa is the sight of another top 15 SEC matchup on Saturday afternoon as No. 1 Alabama and No. 12 Ole Miss face off.

Lane Kiffin will be making his return to Bryant Denny Stadium for the first time since being named the Rebels’ head coach. His team is coming off a bye week, having the opportunity to get healthy.

Alabama did not have the same advantage. Even if Southern Miss was not the best opponent, there were still 60 minutes of football to be played.

Nick Saban was able to provide injury updates on three players Wednesday morning. One of the more surprising ones was Henry To’oTo’o coming out of the Florida game.

“He was a little sick when we played down at Florida,” Saban said about the linebacker. “He played anyway. But he has played extremely well for us.”

To’oTo’o finished with nine tackles against the Gators and three last week against Southern Miss. He and Christian Harris have been an intricate part of the defense thus far.

Alabama’s pass rush could finally be back at full strength as well, with LaBryan Ray returning to near 100%.

“He’s played in the last two games and played more in each one of those games,” Saban said. “We’re very pleased with the progress that he’s making and the way that he’s playing, and I think the more he plays, the more productive that he’ll be and I think the more confident that he’ll get that he’s physically healthy as well as making strides to getting back to be the kind of player that he’s always been for us.”

The defensive lineman suffered a groin injury just before the summer ended and missed the first two games of the season.

On the offensive side of the ball, it sounds like Brian Robinson Jr. is ready to be the feature back of the offense again. After missing the Southern Miss game, Saban said Robinson Jr. would practice this week and be listed as day-to-day.

On Wednesday he confirmed the running back will be good to go for Ole Miss.

“He [Robinson Jr.] looks good and he’s practiced well, so we’re encouraged that he’ll be able to play in the game on Saturday.”

Nick Saban “hopeful” Brian Robinson will be 100% by Ole Miss

Nick Saban is “hopeful” Brian Robinson Jr. will be 100% by the 2:30 kickoff on Saturday.

Alabama went into Southern Miss without Brian Robinson Jr. The starting running back is dealing with a rib injury and left the carries for Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams.

Nick Saban provided an injury on the running back during his press conference on Monday. The head coach said Robinson Jr. practiced and is going to be day-to-day moving forward.

As for his status against Ole Miss, Saban is “hopeful” Robinson Jr. will be 100% by the 2:30 kickoff on Saturday.

Despite missing a game, Robinson Jr. is still the Crimson Tide’s leading rusher. Getting him back in time for Ole Miss will be huge for Bryce Young and the offense, making sure there are plenty of options in the run game.

Even with Robinson Jr. out last week, Saban wanted to get back to running the ball after a poor performance against Florida. Alabama rushed for 211 yards and a touchdown.

Ole Miss’ defense is giving up 136 rushing yards a game and just 3.5 yards per carry. Opponents of Louisville, Austin Peay, and Tulane are a lot different than going up against Alabama. Having Robinson Jr. back will help attack the Rebels.
