A pair of 5-stars to visit Michigan State football this weekend

MSU will have two 2022 5-stars on campus this weekend:

Michigan State is set to have one of the biggest recruiting weekends in recent history. It is most certainly going to be the biggest recruiting weekend of the Mel Tucker era.

The Spartans coaching staff is set to host a plethora of 4 star recruits, but the weekend is going to be headlined by two star players, a pair of 5-stars.

Harold Perkins and Kiyaunta Goodwin are the two five-stars that will be in attendance this weekend.

Perkins is a linebacker from Cypress, Texas. He is ranked the No. 5 overall player in the country according to 247Sports. Texas A&M, Texas and LSU are the main competition for Perkins. He will be visiting unofficially.

Goodwin is Charlestown, Indiana native that is currently a Kentucky commit. He has been in contact with the Spartans for a good bit. He is ranked the No. 12 overall player according to 247Sports. Alabama, Michigan and Ohio State are all in the mix to flip Goodwin.

Kiyaunta Goodwin — a four-star offensive tackle from Charlestown, Ind. — will announce his commitment this Saturday night at 6 p.m. (EST) on CBS Sports HQ. Michigan State is one of Goodwin’s five finalists, with Kentucky, Ohio State, Clemson and Alabama being the other four teams still in the running for this top offensive lineman.

Ohio State target Kiyaunta Goodwin sets commitment date

What once seemed to be a lock for Ohio State, may be fading. A new leader has emerged to land 4-star offensive lineman Kiyaunta Goodwin.

We shared the news a couple of weeks ago that four-star offensive lineman Kiyaunta Goodwin, out of Charlestown, Indiana, had narrowed his list to five schools with Ohio State making the cut. Goodwin has now set an official announcement date of April 17 to share his college choice.

At the time of that writing, Goodwin had a crystal ball pick from 247Sports to join the Buckeyes. But, oh, how things can change in just a short period of time. With Alabama, Clemson, Kentucky and Michigan State joining OSU in Goodwin’s top five, an unlikely leader has seemingly emerged from the pack.

It looks as if now, the Kentucky Wildcats are the leader in the clubhouse to land Goodwin’s services. It seems Kentucky recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow made headway with the young offensive lineman, which may have him calling the Bluegrass State home for the next four years.

This is quite a turnaround. Initially, 247Sports recruiting experts Bill Kurelic and Steve Wiltfong both had Goodwin as an 8 out of 10 in odds of landing in Columbus.

You can bet there will be some calls from Ryan Day and Greg Studrawa to Charleston, Indiana, between now and April 17 as they try to turn the tide back in Ohio State’s favor.

Why haven’t the Irish offered two high level ‘22 in-state prospects?

The Notre Dame staff has yet to offer two national prospects that reside in their own backyard.

It is still very early for many in the class of 2022 recruiting cycle, Notre Dame currently has just two commits in the class. Yes, one of them is from in-state offensive tackle Joey Tanona, the second ranked player in the state, but they have yet to offer the best player in the state, defensive tackle Caden Curry.

Curry resides in Greenwood, a suburb of Indianapolis, has been offered by Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Purdue and others. What’s missing is an offer from the Irish and Brian Kelly seems to be falling behind the ball on Curry’s recruitment. His current perceived leaders are Ohio State and Alabama, but the Irish haven’t even joined the party. You might wonder what the holdup is to offering Curry and that’s a great question. The 10th ranked defensive tackle according to the 247Sports composite rankings should hold an Irish offer at this moment, but alas, he does not.

Another question is why hasn’t Kelly offered rising offensive tackle Kiyaunta Goodwin? The massive tackle has seen his recruitment explode over the last few days, adding a big offer from Ohio State yesterday while he already had offers from USC, Alabama and LSU. Goodwin is further down the state in Charleston, a suburb of Louisville, but on the Indiana side. The Irish have yet to offer him as well. Goodwin is unranked in the 247Sports composite, but his offer list tells me that is going to change soon.

It is a bit confusing that the Notre Dame coaching staff has yet to offer either of these big-time prospects, but it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. In 2015, the Irish signed 3 of the top 5 in-state players, but since then until this year’s recruiting cycle, Kelly hasn’t signed one top 5 in-state player. Offensive tackle Blake Fisher will break that streak when he signs later this year, but this is still very concerning.

There are high level players in Notre Dame’s back yard that they are allowing to leave. Clearly there are some hurdles with academics, but this is definitely something to monitor. Seeing Indiana’s finest players on other teams rosters just doesn’t sit well with me.
