Cleveland Browns bring in Khalil Davis and 4 others for tryouts

The Cleveland Browns continue to look to churn the bottom of their roster, bringing in five for a tryout.

According to the NFL’s Personnel Notice sent out today, Friday 9/16, the Cleveland Browns brought in five players for tryouts. Defensive tackle Khalil Davis is among the most popular of the names, as he was a sixth round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The four other names brought in were former Florida and undrafted free agent Jean Delance, former Morgan State offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley, defensive end Nick Thurman out of Houston, and former Stony Brook linebacker Sam Kamara.

The defensive linemen named could have a direct correlation to the discipline Perrion Winfrey is facing from the team as Roderick Perry has been activated from the Practice Squad for this game against the Jets to sit in for the fourth rounder.

As of now, none of these players have received contract offers to either the active roster nor the practice squad. Keep an eye on these names in the coming days.

The Minnesota Vikings hosted a tryout and a visit on Tuesday

The Vikings hosted a visit and a tryout on Tuesday

The Minnesota Vikings lost Janarius Robinson to the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday afternoon which freed a spot on their practice squad.

With that move being made, the Vikings made two corresponding moves by bringing in wide receiver Reggie Roberson for a visit and defensive tackle Khalik Davis for a tryout.

Roberson is a rookie from Southern Methodist that specializes in speed. He tore his ACL during the 2020 season which hindered him somewhat during the 2021 season. He is a true deep-threat receiver that is great after the catch. He also is a solid punt returner which could be intriguing for the Vikings to add to the practice squad. He spent some time with the Tennessee Titans during camp and the preseason.

Davis comes in at 6’1″ and 308 pounds but has a really nice athletic profile. He has a really nice 10-yard split which has become a theme with general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. His 10-yard split comes in at 1.66 seconds which ranks in the 97.6 percentile. The 20-yard and 40-yard are also in the 99th percentile. Davis spent time with the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the past two sesaons.

It’s always good to know that the Vikings are continuing to try and find talent.

Former Nebraska DT Ends Steelers Preseason Game With Highlight Tackle

A former Nebraska Cornhuskers DT made a big tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers defensive tackle Khalil Davis made a highlight play during an NFL preseason game.

Davis was a member of the Cornhuskers from 2015 to 2019. In his senior season, he recorded 44 total tackles, eight sacks, and 11 tackles for loss. As a result, he was a Third-Team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches.

Davis was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Now, Davis is with the Pittsburgh Steelers. On Saturday, the Steelers were facing the Seattle Seahawks in their preseason opener.

With three seconds to go, the Seahawks were trailing the Steelers by seven points. They attempted to execute a trick play, but Davis took down tight end Tyler Mabry with a huge hit-stick tackle.

Steelers signing DL Khalil Davis to practice squad

ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported that the Steelers are signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers DL Khalil Davis to their squad.

When the practice squad update is released later today, expect defensive lineman Khalil Davis to be on it. ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers are signing the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer to their squad.

Davis, 25, was a sixth-round pick with the Buccaneers in the 2020 NFL draft. He appeared in two games during his rookie season but hadn’t played at all for the Bucs this season.

The Steelers were in line for the Davis lottery when the Bucs released him last month. Instead, the Indianapolis Colts grabbed Davis, and the Steelers signed nose tackle Eli Ankou, who they released one week later.

The Colts waived Davis on Saturday after just six snaps in Week 6.

Davis will presumably take the spot of his twin brother, Carlos, who the Steelers placed on injured reserve last week.

The Davis’ join T.J. and Derek Watt and Trey and Terrell Edmunds as the third set of brothers on the team.

Bucs select Nebraska DT Khalil Davis in sixth round

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used their sixth-round pick to take DT Khalil Davis out of Nebraska.

The Buccaneers are having a strong NFL draft, and it continued in the sixth-round today with the drafting of Nebraska defensive tackle Khalil Davis.

Davis will be joining a Bucs defense that features some big names like Ndamukong Suh and Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaq Barrett.

Davis will be happy to be joining fellow Nebraska alums like Suh and Lavonte David. I’m sure they’ll have some fun with the rookie when they finally get on the field together.

While the Bucs have veterans along the D-line, they needed to infuse some youth into that unit, so the selection of Davis is a strong late-round pick.

Welcome to Tampa bay, Khalil!

2020 NFL draft: The Panthers Wire dueling mock drafts edition

Then vote at the end for which mock you like best.

Self-quarantining may be a bummer, but some of the online content that’s emerged as a result has been pure gold. Perhaps the most notable comes courtesy of the music industry’s biggest names, who have taken to Instagram Live to go head-to-head in some heated beat battles. We’ve seen Timbaland vs. Swizz Beatz, Lil’ Jon vs. T-Pain and Scott Storch vs. Mannie Fresh, to name a few.

For our latest 2020 mock draft, we decided to follow their example and put out a mock draft battle between two of our Panthers Wire contributors: five-year veteran Anthony Rizzuti and the up-and-coming rookie Erik Williams.

Read on to take a look at their mock picks, conducted via the PFF Draft Simulator, to see how they ran their respective drafts for the Panthers. Then vote at the end for which mock you like best.

Round 1: pick No. 7 overall

Rizzuti: Isaiah Simmons, LB/S, Clemson

Carolina’s new head coach Matt Rhule places a premium on athleticism and versatility and there’s no player in this draft on either side of the ball who has a better combination of both.

Simmons’ blend of tools – particularly his physical abilities and natural feel for the game – have earned him a variety of reps as a linebacker, edge, both safety spots, outsite corner and even some slot corner. He’d make for an ideal fit for the positionless prototype being brought in by Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow.

Whether you see him as Luke Kuechly’s heir apparent or as a Derwin James-like playmaker, it doesn’t really matter seeing as the team has needs at practically every single position on defense. Simmons offers depth at most of them.

Williams: Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn

This has been a popular mock pick this year, but Brown is simply too good to pass on, here. The Panthers get the best player available in one of their greatest areas of need: the interior of the defensive line.

Brown’s draft stock has taken a bit of a hit following his sub-par combine performance, but he is still considered by most to be the best defensive tackle in this class, if not a close No. 2 behind South Carolina’s Javon Kinlaw.

Brown plays with unbelievable strength and explosiveness, tremendous gap penetration ability, and a motor that never stops. He is exactly the kind of prototype player Rhule wants to work with, and he can start right away.

Jaguars Wire 7-round mock (with trades): Jags get better in trenches on both sides

The Jags need help in the trenches and could bolster both units with 12 selections in the upcoming draft.

With the most important part of free agency over, all of the league’s 32 teams likely have their draft boards set and a plan in place of what direction they will go in with their selections.

In the Jacksonville Jaguars’ case, it’s likely suiting up to be the most interesting selection process in team history as they have 12 draft selections. While they’ve addressed several needs in free agency with the addition of players like linebacker Joe Schobert, defensive lineman Rodney Gunter, and tight end Tyler Eifert (if healthy), there are still plenty of holes to fill within the roster.

With it being three weeks since our last mock draft, we headed over to Pro Football Network to fire up their new mock draft simulator (which even let us make a trade). When considering the Jags’ needs at the moment, here are the selections we came away with:

Round one, selection No. 9: Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn

It’s going to get crazy within the top-8 selections and a very good player will fall to the Jags. In this case, it was Auburn’s Derrick Brown who would bolster the team’s presence in the middle.

At 6-foot-5, 326-pounds, he can be a space-eating nose tackle for them in the middle or provide them with a push in the interior when a pass-rush is needed. Most feel he’s an elite prospect and it’s hard to envision the Jags not thinking the same.

2019 East-West Shrine Bowl: 6 players for Jaguars fans to watch on West team

The Jags have had a heavy presence at the East-West Shrine Bowl and here are six players they could be interested in on the West team.

Earlier we took a look at some players on the East team for Jacksonville Jaguars fans to watch in Saturday’s Shrine Bowl and now it’s time to look at the West team. Here are six standouts from the game’s practice sessions that could fill some holes on the Jags’ roster:

Kelly Bryant, QB, Missouri

Like receiver, quarterback isn’t a pressing need for the Jags but it’s a position worth looking at for them. Even if they name Gardner Minshew II the starter, it isn’t as if his play was perfect in 2019. Sure, he flashed a great deal of ability but when he was forced to play within the confines of the pocket, it wasn’t pretty.

All of that said, I forgot to mention a quarterback in the East breakdown so I’ll do so here by listing Kelly Bryant. Again, the Jags love Southeastern Conference players and Bryant is someone who has played against elite defenses (see Alabama). At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Bryant has good size and a live arm. He progressed well throughout the three practice sessions this week and especially impressed in team drills. Needless to say, that means all eyes will be on him during the game as he could be a late-round option at quarterback for the Jags to develop over time.

Calvin Thockmorton, OL, Oregon

According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, Calvin Thockmorton stood out in Day’s 1-2. He looked his best at guard and center as opposed to tackle, so Jags fans who tune in to the Shrine Game should watch his work there as opposed to the interior because that’s where the team needs help at the most. Nonetheless, versatility is always a plus and the fact that he played every position but left guard while at Oregon is pretty impressive.

Nick Westbrook, WR, Indiana

Many praised the speed of Nick Westbrook this week as it seems he may have been the best deep threat in St. Petersburg. He also showcased a great deal of athleticism while making highlight grabs.

At 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, he’s exactly the type of receiver the Jags like, which is tall fast and flashy. With a high probability that they will part ways with Marqise Lee this offseason, Westbrook could be an option for the Jags during Day 3 of the draft.

Bravvion Roy, DL, Baylor

Bravvion Roy was arguably the most mentioned player of the three practices in St. Petersburg and he’s clearly made himself some money when it comes to April’s draft.

According to Pauline, Roy collapsed the pocket and could not be stopped all week for the most part. At 6-foot-1, 333 pounds, Roy could be a candidate to play nose tackle with the Jags, who may be parting ways with Marcell Dareus who would free up over $20 million if released.

Khalil Davis, DL, Nebraska

Like Roy, Khalil Davis was a name mentioned all week. He doesn’t quite have the size that Roy has at 6-foot-0, 300 pounds, but he’s quick at the snap. He also showed the ability to bend this week.

As mentioned in the article about the players to watch on the East team, the Jags need more of a space-eater and run-stuffer in the interior, but if Davis is still available outside of the top-100 selections, he’s certainly worth a look. With the front office understanding that a team can never have enough pass-rushers, they likely will keep a close eye on Davis during the game.

Mykal Walker, LB, Fresno State

Mykal Walker is a player that has played as a 3-4 outside linebacker and a 4-3 inside linebacker while at Fresno State. Of course, with the Jags they may look at him at MIKE linebacker or maybe weak-side linebacker as it appears Todd Wash will remain the team’s defensive coordinator.

At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, Pauline praised Walker’s instincts and ability to play in space. He also said Walker could be underdrafted, which may present the Jags with a chance to land a late-round gem if they like him.
