Former New York Giants running back Tyrone Wheatley has been hired as the next head coach of Wayne State University.

Wayne State, located in Detroit, Michigan, is a Division II school in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Wheatley was born in Michigan and attended Robichaud High School before attending Michigan University. At Michigan, he was a part of the track team and a running back where he received Big-Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors in 1992 and was first-team All-Big Ten three years in a row.

Wheatley was selected by the Giants in the first round of the 1995 NFL Draft and spent the first three years of his NFL career in Giants blue. In 1999, Wheatley joined the Miami Dolphins. However, after being cut during training camp, Wheatley joined the Oakland Raiders for the remainder of his career (1999-2004).

Wheatley played in 46 games for the Giants, rushing for 1,280 yards and eight touchdowns. However, Wheatley’s best season came with the Raiders in 2000 tallying 1,046 yards and 10 total touchdowns (nine rushing, one receiving.)

His coaching resume includes being a head coach at the high school he attended, Robichaud (2007), and Morgan State University (2019-2021), a division I-AA school. He has also racked up quite the resume as a running backs coach serving stints with Ohio Northern University, Eastern Michigan University, Syracuse University, the Buffalo Bills, Michigan University, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Denver Broncos.

Wheatley becomes the 20th head coach in Wayne State’s 106th year of its football program. His path to landing the job has been that of a journeyman when it comes to coaching.

Once a Giant, always a Giant.

Broncos RBs coach Tyrone Wheatley leaves team to coach college program

Broncos RBs coach Tyrone Wheatley has left the team to become the head coach of Wayne State University.

The Denver Broncos lost running back Tyrone Wheatley to college football on Thursday.

Wheatley, 51, has left the Broncos to become the head coach of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. This will mark his second stint as a head coach at the college level after previously holding that title at Morgan State from 2019-2021.

An experienced running backs coach who spent ten years playing the position with the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders, Wheatley joined the Broncos last year after the team hired Nathaniel Hackett.

Hackett was fired last December and Denver is now seeking a new head coach. Hackett’s holdover coaches are not guaranteed to be retained by the team’s next coach, and several are seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Hackett himself was hired as an offensive coordinator by the New York Jets. Broncos offensive coordinator Justin Outten has interviewed with three teams, quarterbacks coach Klint Kubiak interviewed with two teams and defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero has drawn interest from five teams.

Meanwhile, Denver has eight known candidates for its head coach opening. DeMeco Ryans is believed to be the favorite to replace Hackett.

Former Michigan football running back and coach finds a new head coaching job

Glad to see him back in Michigan!

Former Michigan football legend, Tyrone Wheatley, has found a new home coaching the game he loves.

On Thursday morning, Wayne State University announced it hired Wheatley as the school’s 20th head coach in program history.

The former Wolverine running back coached the Denver Broncos running back group this past season in the NFL. He went back to the NFL after a three-year stint as the head coach at Morgan State where he went 5-18.

“Throughout the interview process, (interim athletic director Erika) Mrs. Wallace showed that Wayne State was well prepared and very detailed in what they wanted in the football program and the direction of the athletic department,” Wheatley said in a released statement. “This made me really excited about the job. I am looking forward to coming home, as they always say there is no place like home. No matter where I have been, I’ve always tried to recruit the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit. I am pleased, honored, and blessed to be back home and to coach at Wayne State University.”

Wheatley has had coaching experience at Ohio Northern, Eastern Michigan, Syracuse, Buffalo Bills, Michigan (for two years), and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Now 51 years old, Wheatley starred at Michigan from 1991-1994. He was a three-time All-Big Ten award winner and was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 1992.

Wheatley had a 10-year NFL career after becoming a first-round selection by the New York Giants in 1995. He played four years with the Giants and six years with the Oakland Raiders.

5 interim coach candidates for Broncos if they fire Nathaniel Hackett

If the Broncos fire Nathaniel Hackett during the season, which in-house candidates could replace him?

The Denver Broncos’ new ownership group having this much patience with coach Nathaniel Hackett seems to suggest that the coach won’t be fired until the end of the season (if he is fired after Year 1).

If the Broncos do fire Hackett during the season, though, here are five interim candidates who could take his place to finish out the 2022 campaign.

Cleveland Browns bring in Khalil Davis and 4 others for tryouts

The Cleveland Browns continue to look to churn the bottom of their roster, bringing in five for a tryout.

According to the NFL’s Personnel Notice sent out today, Friday 9/16, the Cleveland Browns brought in five players for tryouts. Defensive tackle Khalil Davis is among the most popular of the names, as he was a sixth round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The four other names brought in were former Florida and undrafted free agent Jean Delance, former Morgan State offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley, defensive end Nick Thurman out of Houston, and former Stony Brook linebacker Sam Kamara.

The defensive linemen named could have a direct correlation to the discipline Perrion Winfrey is facing from the team as Roderick Perry has been activated from the Practice Squad for this game against the Jets to sit in for the fourth rounder.

As of now, none of these players have received contract offers to either the active roster nor the practice squad. Keep an eye on these names in the coming days.

Raiders sign former Bears OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr.

Tyrone Wheatley Jr has signed with the Raiders. Yes, you read that right.

Don’t adjust your screen. And don’t look at your calendar. Yes, the Raiders signed Tyrone Wheatley Jr, according to his agent.

Yes, the son of former Raiders great running back Tyrone Wheatley.

Wheatley Jr isn’t a running back, though. He’s a tackle.

This isn’t the first time Jr has followed in his father’s footsteps. The former tight end attended Michigan for college ball, just like his dad. But Jr’s time there would be short.

After two seasons with the Wolverines in which he twice broke his foot and ultimately left the team and transferred to FCS Stoneybrook.

The 6-6 Wheatley Jr conversion to tackle happened in 2021 when he joined the Spring League, going from 265 to 290 pounds. And by June, he had signed with the Chicago Bears.

Though he didn’t make the Bears’ regular season roster, he was signed back to the practice squad and was then re-signed in January to a reserve/future contract.

He was waived a week ago, giving him the opportunity to join the Silver & Black, just like his dad did six seasons, including three trips to the postseason and a trip to the Super Bowl.

After three years of leading his own show at Morgan State, former Michigan football running back and assistant coach Tyrone Wheatley is ready to head back to the NFL.

According to Pro Football Talk, Wheatley is joining the Denver Broncos new coaching staff, coming aboard as the new running backs coach.

Wheatley spent two years at Michigan as the running backs coach, joining Jim Harbaugh when he first arrived in Ann Arbor. However, he left after the 2016 season, returning to the NFL as the Jacksonville Jaguars running backs coach before getting the head post at Morgan State.

Before he returned to Ann Arbor, Wheatley was coaching running backs with the Buffalo Bills.
